• Using db4o with multiple application instances under medium trust

  I recently stumbled over the object database engine db4o which I think looks really interesting. I would like to use it in an ASP.NET MVC application that will be deployed to a shared hosting environment under medium trust. Because of the trust level, I'm restricted to using db4o in embedded/in-process mode. That in itself should be no problem, but the hosting provider also transparently runs each web application in multiple (load-balanced) server instances with shared storage, which I would say is normally a very nice feature for a $10/month hoster. However, since an instance of a db4o server with write access (whether in-process or networked) locks the underlying database file, having multiple instances of the application using the same file won't work (or at least I can't see how it would). So the question is: is it possible to use db4o in this specific environment? I have considered letting each application have its own database which is synchronized with a master database using replication (dRS), but that approach will most likely end up with very frequent bi-directional replication (read master changes at beginning of each request, write to master after each change) which I don't think will be very efficient. Summary of the web application/environment characteristics: Read-intensive (but not entirely read-only) Some delay (a few seconds) is acceptible between the time that a change is made and the time when the change shows up in all the application instances' data Must run in medium trust No guarantee that the load-balancer uses "sticky sessions" All suggestions are much appreciated!

• Problem with multiple select removing more than 1 option

  Ok, there seems to be a problem with the JS Code for Opera browsers, as it only removes the last option tag that is selected within a multiple select tag, can someone please help me. Here is the HTML for this: <select id="actions_list" name="layouts" multiple style="height: 128px; width: 300px;"> <option value="forum">forum</option> <option value="collapse">collapse</option> <option value="[topic]">[topic]</option> <option value="[board]">[board]</option> </select> Ofcourse it's within a form tag, but there's a ton more code involved with this form, but here is the relevant info for this. Here is the JS that should handle this, but only removes the last selected option in Opera, not sure about other browsers, but it really needs to remove all selected options, not just the last selected option... argg var action_list = document.getElementById("actions_list"); var i = action_list.options.length; while(i--) { if (action_list.options[i].selected) { action_list.remove(i); } } What is wrong with this? • SQL - Multiple join conditions using OR?

  I have a query that is using multiple joins. The goal is to say "Out of table A, give me all the customer numbers in which you can match table A's EmailAddress with either email_to or email_from of table B. Ignore nulls, internal emails, etc.". It seems like it would be better to use an or condition in the join than multiple joins since it is the same table. When I try to use AND/OR it does not give the behaviour I expect... AND finishes in a reasonable time, but yields no results (I know that there are matches, so it must be some flaw in my logic) and OR never finishes (I have to kill it). Here is example code to illustrate the question: --my original query SELECT DISTINCT a.CustomerNo FROM A a WITH (NOLOCK) LEFT JOIN B e WITH (NOLOCK) ON a.EmailAddress = e.email_from RIGHT JOIN B f WITH (NOLOCK) ON a.EmailAddress = f.email_to WHERE a.EmailAddress NOT LIKE '%@mydomain.___' AND a.EmailAddress IS NOT NULL AND (e.email_from IS NOT NULL OR f.email_to IS NOT NULL) Here is what I tried, (I am attempting logical equivalence): SELECT DISTINCT a.CustomerNo FROM A a WITH (NOLOCK) LEFT JOIN B e WITH (NOLOCK) ON a.EmailAddress = e.email_from OR a.EmailAddress = e.email_to WHERE a.EmailAddress NOT LIKE '%@mydomain.___' AND a.EmailAddress IS NOT NULL AND (e.email_from IS NOT NULL OR e.email_to IS NOT NULL) So my question is two-fold: Why does having AND in the above query work in a few seconds and OR goes for minutes and never completes? What am I missing to make a logically equivalent statement that has only one join?

  Hi In my website i use ASP MVC 2 + Fluent NHibernate as orm, StructureMap for IoC container. There are several databases with identical metadata(and so entities and mappings are the same). On LogOn page user fiils in login, password, rememberme and chooses his server from dropdownlist (in fact he chooses database). Web.config contains all connstrings and we can assume that they won't be changed in run-time. I suppose that it is required to have one session factory per database. I have no idea how to do that except changing xml all the time and reseting xml configuration, but its really bad solution.

• .net printing multiple reports in one document (architecture question)

  I understand how to print a single document via the PrintDocument class. However, I want to print multiple reports in one document. Each "report" will consist of charts, tables, etc. I want to have two reports per page. I've studied the few examples I can find on how to combine multiple documents into one; however, they always seem to work by creating a collection of objects (e.g. customer or order) that are then iterated over and drawn in the OnPrintPage method. My problem and hence the "architecture" question is that I don't want to cache the objects required to produce the report since they are very large and memory intensive. I'd simply like the resulting "report". One thought I had was to print the report to a metafile, cache that instead in a "MultiplePrintDocument" class and then position those images appropriately two to a page in the OnPrintPage method. I think this would be a lot more efficient and scalable in my case. But I'm not a professional programmer and can't figure out if I'm barking up the wrong tree here. I think the Graphics.BeginContainer and Graphics.Save methods might be relevant, but can't figure out how to implement or if there is a better way. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

• How to prevent multiple definitions in C?

  I'm a C newbie and I was just trying to write a console application with Code::Blocks. Here's the (simplified) code: main.c: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include "test.c" // include not necessary for error in Code::Blocks int main() { //t = test(); // calling of method also not necessary return 0; } test.c: void test() {} When I try to build this program, it gives the following errors: *path*\test.c|1|multiple definition of `_ test'| obj\Debug\main.o:*path*\test.c|1|first defined here| There is no way that I'm multiply defining test (although I don't know where the underscore is coming from) and it seems highly unlikely that the definition is somehow included twice. This is all the code there is. I've ruled out that this error is due to some naming conflict with other functions or files being called test or test.c. Note that the multiple and the first definition are on the same line in the same file. Does anyone know what is causing this and what I can do about it? Thanks!

• How views are changing in future versions of SQL

  April is here, and this weekend, SQL v11.0 (previous known as Denali, now known as SQL Server 2012) reaches general availability. And so I thought I’d share some news about what’s coming next. I didn’t hear this at the MVP Summit earlier this year (where there was lots of NDA information given, but I didn’t go), so I think I’m free to share it. I’ve written before about CTEs being query-scoped views. Well, the actual story goes a bit further, and will continue to develop in future versions. A CTE is a like a “temporary temporary view”, scoped to a single query. Due to globally-scoped temporary objects using a two-hashes naming style, and session-scoped (or ‘local’) temporary objects a one-hash naming style, this query-scoped temporary object uses a cunning zero-hash naming style. We see this implied in Books Online in the CREATE TABLE page, but as we know, temporary views are not yet supported in the SQL Server. However, in a breakaway from ANSI-SQL, Microsoft is moving towards consistency with their naming. We know that a CTE is a “common table expression” – this is proving to be a more strategic than you may have appreciated. Within the Microsoft product group, the term “Table Expression” is far more widely used than just CTEs. Anything that can be used in a FROM clause is referred to as a Table Expression, so long as it doesn’t actually store data (which would make it a Table, rather than a Table Expression). You can see this is not just restricted to the product group by doing an internet search for how the term is used without ‘common’. In the past, Books Online has referred to a view as a “virtual table” (but notice that there is no SQL 2012 version of this page). However, it was generally decided that “virtual table” was a poor name because it wasn’t completely accurate, and it’s typically accepted that virtualisation and SQL is frowned upon. That page I linked to says “or stored query”, which is slightly better, but when the SQL 2012 version of that page is actually published, the line will be changed to read: “A view is a stored table expression (STE)”. This change will be the first of many. During the SQL 2012 R2 release, the keyword VIEW will become deprecated (this will be SQL v11 SP1.5). Three versions later, in SQL 14.5, you will need to be in compatibility mode 140 to allow “CREATE VIEW” to work. Also consistent with Microsoft’s deprecation policy, the execution of any query that refers to an object created as a view (rather than the new “CREATE STE”), will cause a Deprecation Event to fire. This will all be in preparation for the introduction of Single-Column Table Expressions (to be introduced in SQL 17.3 SP6) which will finally shut up those people waiting for a decent implementation of Inline Scalar Functions. And of course, CTEs are “Common” because the Table Expression definition needs to be repeated over and over throughout a stored procedure. ...or so I think I heard at some point. • What does 'Lock Version' do?

  Having installed an experimental version of dropbox and installed in manually, i dont want the deb in synaptic to download any updates (as theyll over write the changes ive done manually i assume). Ive found the lock version option in synaptic, im assuming this stops a particular deb from downloading any new versions of itself? Also can i just unlock it again when the version from the deb catches up with the experimental version that i have installed? Am i correct or does it serve another function?

• Ubuntu 12.04 crashes on startup for newer versions of Linux, possibly related to WiFi

  My computer gets to the screen with the Ubuntu logo and the orange/white dots, and then the screen goes black, spits out a lot of error messages, and cannot boot. (If it'd be helpful, I can take a photo of my screen in this state.) I've found I can successfully boot if my wireless card is turned off. As soon as I turn it on, my computer crashes with the same black screen of death. I can also successfully boot if I choose "Previous Linux Version" and select a few versions back (I think 3.0.6). Here are some relevant details about my setup: Ubuntu 12.04 Computer: Lenovo x230 Wireless: Realtek RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter Processor: Intel Core i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz × 4 RAM: 16 GB of RAM Thank you!!!

• How to get rid of multiple linux versions in grub boot menu

  I've been using dual boot on my PC for some time now, to use Ubuntu along side with Windows 7. One very disturbing thing happens, when Ubuntu linux core gets updated (this happens once in a while). They are added as options to the grub menu so, my boot menu now looks like this: Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-27 generic Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-27 generic (recovery mode) Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-25 generic Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-25 generic (recovery mode) Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-24 generic Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-24 generic (recovery mode) Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-22 generic Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-22 generic (recovery mode) Memory test Windows 7 This gets very annoying, because I want to load windows by default, but after every update it shifts down and I have to go to grub config and change the default option. My question: How to get rid of older versions of linux in the grub menu and leave only the newest one?

  I had forgotten that you can use SQL Server Modeling’s awesome Quadrant tool only with SQL Server 2008, not earlier versions of SQL Server. I tried to connect to a remotely hosted database today and kept getting this error message when trying to open tables: I searched and searched for information on "Quadrant" plus this error and only came up with two results that were from 2008.
