Not all services run as SYSTEM and not all services have services.exe as a direct parent, so I don't regard these obvious techniques as being robust enough.

• How can I strip invalid XML characters from strings in Perl?

  I'm looking for what the standard, approved, and robust way of stripping invalid characters from strings before writing them to an XML file. I'm talking here about blocks of text containing backspace (^H) and formfeed characters etc. There has to be a standard library/module function for doing this but I can't find it. I'm using XML::LibXML to build a DOM tree that I then serialize to disk.

Right now I have several overloads that add events to different types of controls: Public Sub AddEventHandler(Button, ButtonEvent) 'adds event handling for Button.Click public Sub AddEventHandler(LinkButton, ButtonEvent)'adds event handling for LinkButton.Click The problem is I want to write a function that is more robust like: Public sub AddEventHandler(Control, EventToHandle, ControlEvent) where EventToHandle is the parameter representing Button.Click or whatever event that Button has associated with it. • Is there a good GUI SVN app for Mac (better than XCode)

  Hey everybody, I'm looking for a more robust and fully featured GUI SVN manager for Mac than what is built into XCode (which works, but only as long as you don't need anything beyond the bare basics and doesn't work for versioning scripts and such created in other editors). I can use the terminal commands, but I'd really like the option of using a GUI. On windows I use TortoiseSVN and Visual SVN, which do pretty much everything I need, but as far as I'm aware there's nothing even remotely resembling those on the Mac side.

• Linux software raid robustness

  I have a 4 disk 5TB raid5 setup where a disk is showing signs of going down the drain. It is reporting media errors and from dmesg I can see that several read errors are corrected. smartctl does report "notifications" but no panic so far. Since new disks are rather expensive at the moment I am starting to pondering exactly how robust the linux md layer is. I would appreciate if someone could shed some light on how md actually deals with disk errors. For example how does md deal with write and read errors - what does it (really) take for disk to be rejected from an array. I also read that recently md got support for mapping out bad blocks. Does this mean that the read errors I've had would have been mapped out if I where running kernel 3.1 or would md still try to "work on them" to make them usable.

• Command line tool to query HTML elements (linux)

  I am looking for a (linux) command line tool to parse HTML files and extract some elements, ideally with some XPath-like syntax. I have the following requirements: It must be able to parse arbitrary HTML files (which may contain errors) in a robust manner It must be able to extract text of elements and attributes What I have tried so far: xmlstarlet: would be perfect, but mostly reports errors in files (e.g. entity not defined), even xml fo or htmltidy does not help. xmllint: the best I have found so far, but is not able to extract attribute texts. Something like //a/@href reports <a href="foo">, what I need is just foo. string(//a/@href) works, but queries only the first entry. data is not supported. hxextract: works, but cannot extract attributes. XQilla: would support XPath 2.0 and thus data. It also support xqilla:parse-html, but I have had no luck making this work. Can you recommend me another tool?

• Logging on as root without winbind timeouts

  How can I set up my Linux box so that, if the Active Directory domain controller is down, I can still log in as root, without any timeouts or delays? Following the example of most of the documentation out there, I've listed pam_winbind.so before pam_unix.so in my /etc/pam.d configurations. I believe that this is the cause of the problem. I remember seeing alternate /etc/pam.d setups that change the order and maybe add either pam_localuser or pam_succeed_if (to see if the uid is less than 500), but I can't find any specifics now (and I'm not enough of an expert in PAM to quickly and easily come up with a robust configuration on my own). What is the recommended setup for PAM with Winbind to avoid timeouts and delays if Active Directory is unavailable?

• NFS failover WITHOUT DRBD?

  So I am trying to set up a redundant NFS share in a cloud environment(all links internal, half gig links), and I am looking into using heartbeat for failover, but all the guides seem to be about combining DRBD and heartbeat to create a robust environment. If need be I can do that, but since my content is almost completely static, I would like to avoid the extra overhead and complexity of DRBD if possible, but still be able to fail over if one of the NFS servers fails. Is it possible to use heartbeat with NFS to achieve high-availability without using DRBD to copy the blocks? I am not married to NFSv4, so if NFSv3 over UDP is necessary, that won't be a problem(only a very small number of clients will be connecting to the share) Any comments are appreciated.

• Snapshot/rollback for libvirt+KVM?

  I've recently begun using KVM for my development/test environment on a Linux host system with 8G memory. Prior, I was using VMware Fusion for my virtual environment, but my Macbook only has 2G memory. I tried VMware Server and ESX on the host instead of KVM, but the webUI doesn't run on Mac OSX's Firefox, and we're going to be doing more with KVM anyway. The main feature of VMware I miss is robust snapshot/rollback, but I'm missing this in KVM. I understand the snapshot command, but it shuts down the guest OS when complete, and then copying the disk image to preserve its state is cumbersome. Is this really the best way to manage snapshots on KVM?

Needs to be open-source or have a license level that grants access to source, and needs to be ASP.net (C# preferred, but could live with VB.net) Ultimately, we'll need to be able to assign facilities and instructors, manage attendees, send notifications, and build calendar views. We'll also be integrating with our website to allow on-line sign-up and other things for attendees to manage on their own. We do expect to implement quite a bit of it in-house, but we'd like as broad of a base to start from as we can get. Still, just a really good web-based meeting-room reservation system might make a good enough starting point. • Importing video from a videotape recorded on Soy Handycam

  I used Windows Movie Maker to import videos from a videotape recorded on Sony handycam. I imported the video in .avi format( as it was giving the best video quality), but the size of the video is very large (8GB for just 1 hour). Moreover, it takes a lot of time to import the video in Windows Movie Maker (approx. 2.5 hrs. for 1 hour video). Please suggest some other software which is more robust in the sense that it can give good quality video in lesser size and also it should be able to import the video quickly(as I have to import many video cassettes).

• Cisco 2900 Series Routers worth the price?

  Just wondering if anyone has experience with the cisco 2911 or 2900 series routers? I understand it is newer and similar to the 2811 but more robust. The price difference is not that much more. • Accurate Windows equivalent of the Unix which(1) command

  It's easy enough to write a simple script that works like the which(1) command from unix, which searches for a given command along the PATH. Unfortunately, the CreateProcess function is not so simple, so this type of script does not give accurate results: CreateProcess looks in a number of directories not in the PATH, looks for files with all of the extensions listed in PATHEXT, etc. Worse, who knows what might be added in future versions of Windows? Anyway, my question is: is there a robust, accurate which(1) equivalent for Windows, which always tells you what file CreateProcess would find?

How many clients is it possible to have before it overlaods a wamp server? Basically how robust is Apache for this kind of stuff? Getting a request, aggregating data from mysql server, and then returning the data in an xml format. What solution should I use for my case? Thank you in advance.

• OpenLDAP server logs filled with "TLS negotiation failure"

  I recently migrated an old OpenLDAP setup to a newer server, with a more robust certificate setup. Currently, most hosts are required to verify the cert matches the host: tls_checkpeer yes TLS_REQCERT always In the server logs, there are multiple occurences of: Nov 6 10:45:08 <servername> slapd[1773]: conn=2785646 fd=35 closed (TLS negotiation failure) These errors appear from multiple hosts, but there don't seem to be any issues actually logging into those servers with an LDAP account. Does anyone know what would cause these errors? The server is running Ubuntu 12.04.2, and OpenLDAP version 2.4.28. The cert was generated using GnuTLS.
