• Which one scales better asp or php?

  Let's say the website is doing fine(forums,pictures,ajax). And it needs scaling up/scaling out. I feel more comfortable with php but I have worked with asp.net as well. Would you say asp.net is much more powerful, more robust and thus easier to scale out? What would be the pros and cons of converting the website to asp.net in regards to scalability and performance versus keeping the website written in PHP? Examples of personal experience in making such a conversion would be a plus. Thank you.

  I was pinged by one of my favorite database technology sites today, ODBMS.ORG - informing that Dave Segleau, the Director of Oracle NoSQL Database product management spent some time talking with their editor Roberto Zicari about the product.   Its a great interview and I highly recommend the read.  I think its important to understand the connectivity that Oracle NoSQL Database (ONDB) has with BerkeleyDB, as it says a lot about the maturity of ONDB as it relates to data integrity and reliability.  BerkeleyDB has been living the NoSQL life since the beginning of this transition embracing the right tool for the job approach to data management.  Several of the biggest names in NoSQL ( e.g. LinkedIn's Voldemort ) built their NoSQL scale-out solutions leveraging the robust BerkeleyDB storage engine under their distribution architectures.  Oracle commercializing the same via ONDB makes perfect sense given the demonstrated need for this category of technology.

• Decision for Unchecked Exceptions in Scala

  As a java programmer, I have always been critical of Unchecked Exceptions. Mostly programmers use it as an en-route to coding easiness only to create trouble later. Also the programs (though untidy) with checked exceptions are much robust compared to unchecked counterparts. Surprisingly in Scala, there is nothing called Checked Exceptions. All the Java checked and unchecked are unchecked in Scala. What is the motivation behind this decision? For me it opens wide range of problems when using any external code. And if by chance the documentation is poor, it results in KILL.

• Best Option for Creating A Small Church Website

  I've been asked to create a website for a small church. Their prior site was hosted on geocities which is no longer. They are not looking for anything robust, just an informational site with a calendar and maybe a contact form. The church would also like to be able to administer the site with little technical know-how. Cost is also an issue. Given these requirements, something like sites.google.com seems like a good option. However, my main concern is that Sites will suffer the same fate as geocities. It is definitely not a flagship Google product. Are there other good alternatives that fit the requirements?

• Why does everyone dislike PHP? [closed]

  I'm primarily a Java/Python programmer, but I just picked up an entry-level job doing web development. I had to learn PHP, and several of my CS friends told me that it would stunt my coding ability/be terrible to program in/murder me in the middle of the night. So far, there have been annoying moments with the language (one particular thing that bugs me is the syntax for calling functions...), but nothing living up to the statements of my friends. I still haven't learned very much about the language. Is their hate justified? Why or why not? A few quotes I've seen about PHP: Haskell is faster than C++, more concise than Perl, more regular than Python, more flexible than Ruby, more typeful than C#, more robust than Java, and has absolutely nothing in common with PHP. • Resources for creating a turn-by-turn navigation system

  I'm trying to create a kind of turn-by-turn satellite navigation system using the iOS SDK. I get the directions from the server and draw them on the map, then I keep getting location updates from the iPhone's GPS chip. Currently I start by finding the nearest turning point then, each time the user comes within a certain distance of the next turning point, a verbal cue is given and the turning point index is incremented. This is a delicate system and I'd like to make it more robust so I can tell when the user is going the wrong direction etc. Basically I'm looking for some literature about turn-by-turn navigation, in terms of tracking the user's progress and whether they're going the right direction. I'd have thought there's a lot of research out there but I can't seem to find anything apart from simple tutorials on how to use a given SDK or directions API. Can anyone direct me to a good run-through of the various techniques used in software such as TomTom or Google Maps Navigation?

• What are the technial and programming requirements for writing a stealth keylogger?

  I'm planning to write/code one such stealth keylogger that would bypass detection by a certain antivirus. (I don't want to name the vendor as I know how good Google queries are against StackExchange websites). I don't want to just download any keylogger from internet and try to encode it to evade detection. Writing code myself I would have the ability to make changes as I go; obscuration on both high-level and low-level language. I like control too. It seems naive but is it true that keyloggers are a thing of the past, probably because of how effective AV's have become in detecting such programs? I want some nice points on how can one easily write a robust, effective key logger preferably for a Windows environment?

• how to change dolphin's select region of a file/folder (in detail view mode)

  Since nautilus has removed the dual pane. So I turn to dolphin. I am wondering how to change the default select behavior in detail view mode? Now to select a file/folder, my cursor has to hover over that file/folder and then the left click will take effect, but I much prefer the nautilus way, that is as long as your cursor is in the same row of that file/folder, left click picks up that item. This I think is more robust for user selection, it is faster. Any ideas how to achieve this in dolphin?

• How to pass information across domains to ask for newsletter only once?

  Lets assume following scenario, I have two sites: example1.com example2.com When user visits 1 there is a prompt "please signup to a newsletter". Same thing happens when user visits 2. However when navigating from 1 to 2 I don't want signup form to be shown.   I have seen this question on Quora where lots of people seem to agree that OpenID is bad, even going as far as stating that: OpenID is the worst possible "solution" I have ever seen in my entire life to a problem that most people don't really have Then I've seen articles and tweets referencing that question saying that OpenID has lost, and Facebook won. It's sad to read as I quite like the OpenID (or at least idea behind it). I literally hate getting yet another login/password for page (I'll forget it anyway) - it's a pretty serious issue for me and I know lots of people with the same problem. Thus I thought that OpenId is a great solution but I'm not sure anymore. So the question is should I still bother to implement OpenID or it's not worth it? What is the most robust and convenient (from the user perspective) way to identify and authenticate an user?

  Many times there is the need to load external resources into the program, may they be graphics, audio samples or text strings. Is there a patten for handling the loading and the handling of such resources? For example: should I have a class that loads all the data and then call it everytime I need the data? As in: GraphicsHandler.instance().loadAllData() ...//and then later: draw(x,y, GraphicsHandler.instance().getData(WATER_IMAGE)) //or maybe draw(x,y, GraphicsHandler.instance().WATER_IMAGE) Or should I assign each resource to the class where it belongs? As in (for example, in a game): Graphics g = GraphicsLoader.load(CHAR01); Character c = new Character(..., g); ... c.draw(); Generally speaking which of these two is the more robust solution?
