• What C++ libraries can be used in game development [closed]

  I'm currently in the planning stage for my next game, and since I've been away from C++ for a while I have some questions about helpful libraries. I plan on making a 2D game with SDL, constructing my own simple 2D engine. I plan on making this game for the PC. What libraries would you recommend to make this process easier? What about unittests? What about an enforce operator to throw exceptions? int a = 1; enforce(a == 2); //Throws an exception, Specifically, i'm looking for general purpose libraries, that implement that make my life easier (like boost). Also, a helpful library for physics/collision, AI, XML file parsing (specifically working with the Tiled map editor), and any others that you guys have used that are useful in a 2D game.

  Is it dangerous to substitute unit tests for user testing? A co-worker believes we can reduce the manual user testing we need to do by adding more unit tests. Is this dangerous? Unit tests seem to have a very different purpose than user testing. Aren't unit tests to inform design and allow breaking changes to be caught early? Isn't that fundamentally different than determining if an aspect of the system is correct as a whole of the system? Is this a case of substituting apples for oranges?

To me they're the same thing (though I could be wrong), but in my past experience (mostly with asp.net) I use Serialize() and never use Stringify(). • Could someone break this nasty habit of mine please?

  I recently graduated in cs and was mostly unsatisfied since I realized that I received only a basic theoretical approach in a wide range of subjects (which is what college is supposed to do but still...) . Anyway I took the habit of spending a lot of time looking for implementations of concepts and upon finding those I will used them as guides to writing my own implementation of those concepts just for fun. But now I feel like the only way I can fully understand a new concept is by trying to implement from scratch no matter how unoptimized the result may be. Anyway this behavior lead me to choose by default the hard way, that is time consuming instead of using a nicely written library until I hit my head again a huge wall and then try to find a library that works for my purpose.... Does anyone else do that and why? It seems so weird why would anyone (including me) do that ? Is it a bad practice ? and if so how can i stop doing that ?

  --All this is about terminal-- I know some of you will laugh, but I'm trying to install Arch Linux, since I want to learn as much as I can about linux system and how it works. I want to be an expert (maybe in 1000 years, but that's okay :)). The problem is that even tho I know how to do some stuff under linux I'm having a hard time with those names about hard drives, usb, cd, blah blah and how to access them. Big introduction and no question yet, but the purpose is for you to see where I'm standing and give me as many details as possible. And here's the question: How can I put the .iso file in a usb that will run on computers startup and allow me to install Arch linux? Details as to how to turn my pc on and hit F8 or whatever can be discarted lmao :) Ty in advance.

  I am recording the video using logitech camera and bluetooth microphone. Logitech can used for recording both audio and video. When I turn on bluetooth microphone in the middle of recording, it is replacing the logitech audio channel due to this we are getting the bluetooth audio from the left channel. But when I turn off the bluetooth then I get the logitech audio on left channel but the volume is very low and also getting the some noise. I am using PulseAudio and ffmpeg for recording purpose. So how can I increase / change the volume of left channel during runtime?

  I've faced an issue that I wanted to display the date in the format of ('MMMM dd') that is retrieved from a sharepoint list in an arabic site collection. So, after googling this issue, I've found out that a possible solution to my poblem is using the function ddwrt:FormatDateTime that can be used as long as you'll include the following namespace xmlns:ddwrt="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WebParts/v2/DataView/runtime" My purpose was solved by writing this line of code in my xsl code behind for the webpart : ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(@StartDate),3073,'MMMM dd') but that worked only if the webpart is inserted into an English site . After trying to search but in vain, I started to use my guesses that ended up doing something like that: ddwrt:FormatDateTime(ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(@StartDate),3073,'dd/MM/yyyy'), 3073, 'MMMM dd') And the cause of the problem was that sharepoint parses the date as 'MM/dd/yyyy' which I think could be related to server regional settings, so I had to force it to parse the date in arabic-Egypt format as 'dd/MM/yyyy' in order to get the correct 'Month Day' format as expected.

  I recently got a direct ad campaign for one of my sites. The advertiser agreed to my price without much bargaining. No contract was signed, but I had specified pre payment as part of our agreement. The advertiser is not a major network. Currently they are showing affiliate ads. Some things about this deal seems fishy to me - The amount was direct deposited to our account, not transferred from their company account. - Just below the visible ad, I can see a hidden iframe which contains the flight search widget for a major airline (Could this be cookie stuffing?) - They are contacting me from a gmail account - They did not insist for a signed contact How can I ensure that the advertiser is legitimate and is not using the adslot for illegal purpose?

  I purchased a server for the sole purpose of familiarizing myself with the CLI so I don't get royally screwed when I enter a real development environment. However, I have some questions. I've managed to SSH into my server, all is fine and dandy, installed LAMP too which went flawlessly. Now I'm wondering, the more changes I do, the more cluttered my server will become. I have a select query that selects all reports and their Recipients. Recipients are selected as comma separacted string. During updating, I need to check concurrency. Currently I am using MAX(lastChangeTime) for each reportNumber. This is selected as maxTime. Before update, it checks that the lastChangeTime <= maxTime. --//It works fine One of my co-developers asked why not use GETDATE() as “maxTime” rather than using a MAX operation. That is also working. Here what we are checking is the records are not updated after the record selection time. Is there any pitfalls in using GETDATE() for this purpose?

This is a bit tedious since you have to create the mock with the right interface, but that can do use an introspective framework that can 'spy' on a method, and inject the real dependency in tests Is there a cleaner way to do this kind of things ?

Consider that each row has non-trivial amounts of data (30 columns, including large text in some columns). Some strategies I can think of are: Single thread and read table. (Too slow, but listed for clarity) Read the id's into ConcurrentLinkedQueue, use threads to consume queue and query by id in batches. Read id's into a JMS queue, use workers to consume queue and query by id in batches. What other strategies could be used ? For the purpose of this question assume processing of rows to be free.

  I have an web application server running tomcat and i need to publish my APIs to internet users. However I don't have a domain name for this server and I can only put the ip address of this server (e.g. 145.XXX.XXX.XXX) to point out where my API xml files are located. I have another web server running with a domain name "http://www.webserver.com" registered on the internet and I want to make use of its domain name to server my web application server API xml files location. How can I do that? using "www.webserver.com/api" or using "api.webserver.com"? which is better? Also I wonder if I want to publish a "rstp://145.XXX.XXX.XXX" web link for video streaming purpose, can I use "rstp://www.webserver.com/api" to replace it and how to do it? I always thought the url contain domain sub-directory name cannot point to another IP address, it only can point to another folder location on the webserver itself.

Thus, locate '/usr/share/icons/*' | xargs ls -d 2>&1 >/dev/null serves for that purpose, and I can count the nonexistent files like this: locate '/usr/share/icons/*' | xargs ls -d 2>&1 >/dev/null | wc -l except for the case where filenames have blank spaces in them; and, not very surprisingly, that is the case with Ubuntu (OMG!! It is no longer "forbidden" like in good old times). If I use: locate '/usr/share/icons/*' | xargs -Iñ ls -d 'ñ' 2>&1 >/dev/null it is not working because there is some kind of interference in the syntax between the redirections of the standard outputs and the use of the parameter -I. Can anyone please help me with this syntax or giving another idea?
