• The /usr/bin/x11 folder

  Why does the /usr/bin/x11 folder hold another x11 folder and when you open that === x11 you get another x11 and then another and another??? I did it about 6 times and got frustrated so I have no idea how deep this goes but What is the purpose (or is it a glich?)? Is this eating disk space more than it should? (I was going to delete one or more but thought I better ask first before I end up !fucked ) and finally Is it just me and I am going crazy maybe the pills are wearing off or maybe they are kicking in.. I am not sure but an answer would help. I can see no reason why this should be happening at all.

  Hy. I have a service similar to bit.ly. The link generation method is similar but the site is not. A user uses my site just like the mentioned bit.ly, but i offer a differnet kind of service for which i would want to rank (on Google) for. If i were to generate links such as: mysite.com/my-keywords/1Asdf34 would it be considered spammy or black hat? The same for bit.ly would be: bit.ly/url-shortening-services/3k1dS4sd For bit.ly it would defeat the purpose, but url length in my case does not have to be short.

• Top Questions and Answers for Pluging into Oracle Database as a Service

  Yesterday we hosted a comprehensive online forum that shared a comprehensive path to help your organization design, deploy, and deliver a Database as a Service cloud. If you missed the online forum, you can watch it on demand by registering here. We received numerous questions.  Below are highlights of the most informative: DBaaS requires a lengthy and careful design efforts. What is the minimum requirements of setting up a scaled-down environment and test it out? You should have an OEM 12c environment for DBaaS administration and then a target database deployment platform that has the key characteristics of what your production environment will look like. This could be a single server or it could be a small pool of hosts if your production DBaaS will be larger and you want to test a more robust / real world configuration with Zones and Pools or DR capabilities for example. How does this benefit companies having their own data center? This allows companies to transform their internal IT to a service delivery model for the database. The benefits to the company are significant cost savings, improved business agility and reduced risk. The benefits to the consumers (internal) of services if much fast provisioning, and response to change in business requirements. From a deployment perspective, is DBaaS's job solely DBA's job? The best deployment model enables the DBA (or end-user) to control the entire process. All resources required to deploy the service are pre-provisioned, and there are no external dependencies (on network, storage, sysadmins teams). The service is created either via a self-service portal or by the DBA. The purpose of self service seems to be that the end user does not rely on the DBA. I just need to give him a template. He decides how much AMM he needs. Why shall I set it one by one. That doesn't seem to be the purpose of self service. Most customers we have worked with define a standardized service catalog, with a few (2 to 5) different classes of service. For each of these classes, there is a pre-defined deployment template, and the user has the ability to select from some pre-defined service sizes. The administrator only has to create this catalog once. Each user then simply selects from the options offered in the catalog.  Looking at DBaaS service definition, it seems to be no different from a service definition provided by a well defined DBA team. Why do you attribute it to DBaaS? There are a couple of perspectives. First, some organizations might already be operating with a high level of standardization and a higher level of maturity from an ITIL or Service Management perspective. Their journey to DBaaS could be shorter and their Service Definition will evolve less but they still might need to add capabilities such as Self Service and Metering/Chargeback. Other organizations are still operating in highly siloed environments with little automation and their formal Service Definition (if they have one) will be a lot less mature today. Therefore their future state DBaaS will look a lot different from their current state, as will their Service Definition. How database as a service impact or help with "Click to Compute" or deploying "Database in cloud infrastructure" DBaaS enables Click to Compute. Oracle DBaaS can be implemented using three architecture models: Oracle Multitenant 12c, native consolidation using Oracle Database and consolidation using virtualization in infrastructure cloud. As Deploy session showed, you get higher consolidating density and efficiency using Multitenant and higher isolation using infrastructure cloud. Depending upon your business needs, DBaaS can be implemented using any of these models. How exactly is the DBaaS different from the traditional db? Storage/OS/DB all together to 'transparently' provide service to applications? Will there be across-databases access by application/user. Some key differences are: 1) The services run on a shared platform. 2) The services can be rapidly provisioned (< 15 minutes). 3) The services are dynamic and can be relocated, grown, shrunk as needed to meet business needs without disruption and rapidly. 4) The user is able to provision the services directly from a standardized service catalog.. With 24x7x365 databases its difficult to find off peak hrs to do basic admin tasks such as gathering stats, running backups, batch jobs. How does pluggable database handle this and different needs/patching downtime of apps databases might be serving? You can gather stats in Oracle Multitenant the same way you had been in regular databases. Regarding patching/upgrading, Oracle Multitenant makes patch/upgrade very efficient in that you can pre-provision a new version/patched multitenant db in a different ORACLE_HOME and then unplug a PDB from its CDB and plug it into the newer/patched CDB in seconds.  Thanks for all the great questions!  If you'd like to learn more and missed the online forum, you can watch it on demand here.

Currently, what I know and what I do is: to design relational database(3NF), make separate class for each table put that in MVC implement modular programming ...write code and hope for the best... I presume that next things I need to learn more deeply are: programming codex(naming, commenting, conventions...), organize functions building interfaces organizing custom made libraries, organizing API that I'm using, documenting, team work... ... At last what my job is, it does't need to affect your answer, PHP CodeIgniter developer.

  Is a small amount of lighthearted wording or humor acceptable in source code documentation? For example, I have an algorithm that has a message hop around a graph (network) until its path forms a cycle. When this happens it is removed from the queue of the node it last resided on which removes it from memory. I write that in a comment, and finish the comment with "Rest in peace, little guy". That serves very little documenting purpose, but it cheers me up a bit, and I imagine it might cheer up other people I'm working with as they read through the code. Is this an acceptable practice, or should my in-code documentation resemble as much as possible the speeches of 2004 presidential candidate John Kerry? ;-)

  Hi, I'm looking to to build a wiki based tool the helps/aides in the requirements engineering process. More specifically I am hoping to end up with a tool that helps inexperienced users easily create and design requirements documents on a wiki platform. I was wondering if there exist any wiki/wiki platforms that either already exist or are easily extendible or would be worth looking at that for this purpose. For instance some of the features I was hoping to add would be to add structure to a document so that information is filled out in a standardised manner. Another idea I was looking at was to somehow create relationships between different types of documents (for example- a goal diagram gets evolves/ helps in the development of the class diagram). So far I have come across FOSwiki which claims to to fully customisalble...but I'm not sure what it means and what I can really do with that. Any input on FOSwiki is also highly appreciated.

• easy visualization of usage statistics (web app)

  I have some usage queries for my web app's database, the results of which I want to display graphically. Is there an easy-to-use api that exists for this purpose? I want to show things like average query-time per user (a small user-base), average query time per day, and things like that. I think it would be cool to show these on a two-axis graph. I am displaying this data on my site, so a jQuery/javascript/html solution for rendering information into graphs would be ideal. Thank you :) P.S. • New website, plans to go large. How do you protect yourself?

  I'm planning to create a new site that (in hopes) will make it to a decent state of popularity and use. I have made sites before, but they weren't serious, with any intended purpose other than personal and friend use. I've never been able to find a solid post on good steps to protecting yourself, and your site/idea before you start. This site will always be free, and will not be bringing it any revenue by ads or whatnot, but I plan to in the future and would want to make I'm in the clear legally for one. Do you need to copyright anything? Or anything of the same concept as copyright? Do I make an LLC to operate it under?   If a piece of bespoke software was developed by a company and the Intellectual Property was retained by the company that wrote it, but now the client of the software company wants to get that source code (and its IP) how much should it cost them? How would you calculate a fair cost for the purchase of that source and IP? UPDATE: Just to add, the software in question is of no use to anyone else (for any legitimate purpose) as it ties in directly with the business processes of one company. It is not something that can be subsequently sub-licensed or installed outside the company in question. • Need to set up shared storage for Guest virtual machines that are running on a Xen host

  My environment: I am doing these things at home with the purpose of learning about virtualization techniques. My machine have quad core processor that supports Intel-VT and 8GB RAM. XEN is the virtualization platform. In short, all domUs are LVM based. Mainly I have two questions; I need to have shared storage for these VMs. Something like NFS / NAS / iSCSI etc. However, I don't know which one is the best solution. Therefore, can someone tell me which suits best? Please note that, this shared storage need to be accessed by the other physical machines in the network.   I am a Linux server administrator first and foremost... Having said that, I have been asked by a former high school teacher of mine to teach students a bit about programming. Like any Linux administrator, I know my fair share of Python and Bash. The problem is that I know NOTHING about the lower level stuff like "machine code" and compilation. The main purpose of this series is to teach programming, not computer science, so I don't need a graduate degree's level of knowledge for this, they will be learning Python first and foremost. However, I would like to learn enough to at least broach the subject with them, any ideas where I can learn that kind of stuff relatively quickly?

• Is it a good practice to use branches to maintain different editions of the same software?

  We have a product that has a few different editions. The differences are minor: different strings here and there, very little additional logic in one, very little difference in logic in the other. When the software is being developed, most changes need to be added to each edition; however, there are a few that don't and a few that needs to differ. Is it a valid use of branches if I have release-editionA and release-editionB (..etc) branches? Are there any gotchas? Good practices? Update: Thanks for the insight everyone, lots of good answers here. The general consensus seems to be that it is a bad idea to use branches for this purpose. For anyone wondering, my final solution to the problem is to externalize strings as configuration, and externalize the differing logic as plugins or scripts.

• Hosting advice for a write-heavy dynamic website

  I have built a website using PHP and MySQL and now I am looking for a hosting service. I am expecting about a 1000 users registering and about 5-10k pageviews/day in a week's time. So which host should I opt for? It will let users submit contents of type blobs and submit around 10 pictures per users. I hope that traffic will increase so can justhost's or bluehost's shared hosting serve that purpose or should I go for more dedicated ones. Basically the site is write heavy and there are average 2-3 MySQL queries per page and it is quite dynamic. So depending on these requirements which web hosting will be optimal for me.

• OpenGL Drawing textured model (OBJ) black texture

  I'm using OpenGL, Glew, GLFW and Glut to create a simple game. I've been following some tutorials and I have now a good model importer with textures (from ogldev.atspace.co.uk) but I'm having an issue with the model textures. I have a skybox with a beautiful texture as you can see in the picture That weird texture behind the helicopter (model) is the heli model that I've applied on purpose to that wall to demonstrate that specific texture is working, but not on the helicopter. I'll include the files I'm working on so you can check it out. Mesh.cpp - http://pastebin.com/pxDuKyQa Texture.cpp - http://pastebin.com/AByWjwL6 Render function + skybox - http://pastebin.com/Vivc9qnT I'm just calling mesh->Render(); before the drawSkyBox function, in the render loop. Why is the heli black when I can perfectly apply its texture to another quad? I've debugged the code and the mesh-render() call is correctly fetching the texture number and passing it to the texture-bind() function.
