(from MySQL Forge Wiki) The most obvious pros and cons are pros: Reduced payload size cons: Increased computation time So, is compressed protocol something I should enable whenever I can afford servers with adequate specs? Are there other factors I should consider?

  • which is better, creating a materialized view or a new table?

    I have some demanding mysql queries that are needed to grap same up-to-date datasets from 5-7 mysql tables. I am thinking of creating a table or materialized view to gather all demanding columns from other tables, so as to increase performance. If I create that table, I may need to do extra insert / update / delete operation each time other tables updated. if I create materialized view, I am worrying if the performance can be greatly improved. Because data from other tables are changing very frequently. Most likely, the view may need to be created first everytime before selecting it. Any ideas? e.g. how to cache? other extra measures I can do?

    Is it possible to log CREATE / ALTER statements issued on a MySQL server? I heard that it could be done with a trigger, but I can't seem to find suitable code anywhere. I would like to log these statements to a table, preferably with the timestamp of when they were issued. Can someone provide me with a sample trigger that would enable me to accomplish this? I would like to log these statements so I can easily synchronize the changes with another MySQL server.

    In one of our class sir said that template allows one to customize behavior of class, and then he gave example of string class, that with few lines of code we can customize string class from STL, as in, we can make it to treat 'a' and 'z' same, 'b' and 'y' same, 'c' and 'x' same and so on. Similary 'A' and 'Z' same etc. "abc" == "zyx" is true; "Abc" == "zyx" is false; "Abc == "Zyx" is true; etc I was thinking of implementing such string class, but I am not able to do so. How can we implement such string class using templates?

    I've got a std::map. I'm passing string literal to find method. Obviously, I can pass a string literal such as .find("blah"); However, I wanted to declare it upfront, instead of hardcoding the string, so I have couple of choices now: const std::string mystring = "blah"; const char mystring[] = "blah"; static const char * mystring = "blah"; They all work. (or at least compile). My question is, which one should I use? what's the advantage/distavantage over of the other?

"'" . getMySQLDateString($buydate). //"'STR_TO_DATE('".$buydate ."', '%d/%m/%Y'))'". //nothing changes in MySQL ")"); And this is the faulty function : function getMySQLDateString($buydate) //typical buydate : 04/21/2009 { $mysqlDateString = date('Y-m-d H:i:s', $strtotime($buydate)); return $mysqlDateString; } The first commented out line wouldn't do anything, the script is executed with no error, however, there is nothing changed in datebase after this. The current approach will cause a Fatal error saying function name must be a string in this line. Actually I followed this thread on SO, but just cannot pass the date into MySQL... Can anyone help me figure out which part is not right? How would you do it, in this case, to get it right? Sorry about such a journeyman-like question, thanks a lot in advance.

    I'm trying to store a 12/24hr (ie; 00:00) clock time in a MySQL database. At the moment I am using the time datatype. This works ok but it insists on adding the seconds to the column. So you enter 09:20 and it is stored as 09:20:00. Is there any way I can limit it in MySQL to just 00:00?

    To get the seed and step values of an identity column in sql server i can use this syntax SELECT ColumnName = name, Seed = seed_value, Step = increment_value FROM sys.identity_columns So far in MySql i have found that if i use this syntax SELECT * FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES WHERE auto_increment IS NOT NULL I can at least find out which columns are an identity... The question being how can i get the SEED and STEP values of the identity column from the MySQL Schema.

  • convert string to dict using list comprehension in python

    I have came across this problem a few times and can't seem to figure out a simple solution. Say I have a string string = "a=0 b=1 c=3" I want to convert that into a dictionary with a, b and c being the key and 0, 1, and 3 being their respective values (converted to int). Obviously I can do this: list = string.split() dic = {} for entry in list: key, val = entry.split('=') dic[key] = int(val) But I don't really like that for loop, It seems so simple that you should be able to convert it to some sort of list comprehension expression. And that works for slightly simpler cases where the val can be a string. dic = dict([entry.split('=') for entry in list]) However, I need to convert val to an int on the fly and doing something like this is syntactically incorrect. dic = dict([[entry[0], int(entry[1])] for entry.split('=') in list]) So my question is: is there a way to eliminate the for loop using list comprehension? If not, is there some built in python method that will do that for me?

Then, when I run a command, such a mysql -u root -p , I get this error: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) As I see in other treads, ps aux | grep mysqld gives me just this output: 1000 4508 0.0 0.0 5172 760 pts/0 S+ 19:53 0:00 grep --color=auto mysqld What is happening??
