• SMTP Relay through exchange

  Hi guys, We have a bit of a problem in that we want our printers to email our contractor whenever they develop a fault. The problem is on our corporate network we have no access through the firewall to the internet preventing us to use the external SMTP server. So i suppose the question is can we use our exchange server to do this? IE could I run an SMTP service that would forward to the exchange server which would then send the mail to the contractor? Any ideas welcome! Thanks John

  Hi guys, I'm planning to buy a new notebook since the Toshiba I have now sucks in battery life. I'm a web designer & programmer, and the main features of the notebook should be: High battery life Small, 13.3" or 14" screen A fast processor and RAM that won't let me down while multi-tasking Anything other than these is secondary, I wouldn't like it to be very pricey though :) I'm now leaning towards Macbook Pro 13.3", 2.66 Ghz; it has 10 hours of battery life. However, I mostly develop on Windows, so I don't know how many hours of battery will I get if I run Windows 7 on Bootcamp. Your ideas and suggestions will be much appreciated.

• Windows XP SP3 on Macbook Has Limited Disk Space

  Hi Guys, I setup Windows XP SP3 on a 40 GB partition using bootcamp (partition formatted for NTFS). For some reason, the hard drive properties only show ~3 GB of space available. Funny thing is though, I've hardly installed anything on the system... and if I open the windows explorer, select all directories, and check properties, it appears that I'm only using 11 GB of space. What gives? I thought there might be hidden files/folders so I enabled the option to show it but still nada. Has anyone come across this before? Any suggestions for how to proceed here?

  My friend just updated her Windows Vista to service pack 1, or tried to. Now it wont boot up. Just black screen, some errors etc. I tried googling it and lots of people had this problem it seems. Anyone find a fix for it? I read somewhere I believe that Microsoft said to delete some files, Nvidia maybe? But I can not find that again, I forgot the exact error code I searched for before. Does anyone know what I am talking about? LOL Thanks guys.

• Keyboard Shortcuts in Win 7 without the CTRL + ALT

  I am knew to this site and don't know if I'm doing this correctly. I've been asked to edit my original post so I deleted my original post and starting over. I don't know why it's so hard for everyone to understand what I'm trying to do. You guys are all geniuses when it comes to computers and I'm just starting out. I started out trying to use a shortcut to display the LOCAL AREA CONNECTION window on my desktop by creating a shortcut and assigning it CTRL + , (comma). Windows didn't like that so it added ALT which ended up being CTRL + ALT + ,. Since I couldn't figure out a way to eliminate ALT as part of the shortkey keys, I am now trying a different strategy and it's not working. my latest attempt is to run the following command; ^,:: Run, explorer:: {BA126ADB-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E} Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong? • Do MSDTC and disaster recovery go together?

  Our application writes to multiple Sql Server databases within a distributed transaction. The Ops guys are saying that this messes up their disaster recovery plan because while the transactions on the live tables may commit at the same time, the log shipping on the separate databases happen at slightly different times. So in in a disaster recovery situation, there will be a few partial transactions. Is there a method for maintaining separate but synced databases in DR? Or do we have to re-design to relatively independent databases (or a single database)?

  Thanks to Lifehacker I came across Sikuli which is described as: Sikuli is a visual technology to search and automate graphical user interfaces (GUI) using images (screenshots). The first release of Sikuli contains Sikuli Script, a visual scripting API for Jython, and Sikuli IDE, an integrated development environment for writing visual scripts with screenshots easily. Sikuli Script automates anything you see on the screen without internal API's support. You can programmatically control a web page, a desktop application running on Windows/Linux/Mac OS X, or even an iphone application running in an emulator. As this looks very promising, perhaps complementary to AutoHotKey I'm curious what scripts you guys will come up with. Especially since this program is portable and could solve "simple" Super User problems. • Ping, firewall or DNS problem on Win Server 2008 R2

  Hi there, I've installed windows server 2008 as a VM for the developers here to work on. Installed SQL Server 2008 as well as IIS7. I am not quite sure why, I can remote into that machine using the name I gave to it (winserverdev) but the guys that are supposed to use the bloody thing can't. One very interesting thing is that I can connect but I can't ping... not the name nor the IP address. Is there anything that I should be looking in order to make it work? Any ideas are welcome. • Error "403 Forbidden" on Sharepoint Search Settings Page

  Hello I thought I had solved this nightmare by re-entering the values in my SSP properties set up, however accessing the Search Settings page error has reared it ugly head again. • GDM Won't Automatically Start After Boot

  Ubuntu 10.04 Hi guys. I'm not sure why but quite recently, my ubuntu desktop started bringing up the command prompt login screen after booting. I want GDM to start up by default. I can manually bring up GDM by typing: sudo service gdm start or sudo /usr/sbin/gdm but I want something more permanent. The contents of /etc/X11/default-display-manager point to /usr/sbin/gdm The chkconfig status for GDM shows that it's off on all run levels... could that be it? I tried running: sudo chkconfig --add gdm and just got errors... Any ideas? How can I get GDM to automatically come up again? Any/all help is appreciated! -M

• Mail server responds with Error 500 line too long

  I am occasionally receiving error messages from mail servers with the above message. It seems that at least one line in the e-mail has more than 999 characters and therefore the e-mail is bounced. Is this "by design"? in an RFC? Or some weird pseudo-spam-filter? Or just a bad mailserver? I googled around a bit but did not find a competent answer. Hopefully one of you guys can enlighten me.

• How should i setup my PC partition?

  I want to clear out my PC and setup the partitions. Right now i have it as XP, Win-7, Vista, XP/Test/Spare I notice my PC is pretty good at virtualization, at least virtualizing linux. I also rarely boot out of my primary XP although i do find myself deving on windows 7 once in a while. So i figure i can have it as XP, Windows 7, data partition then... what? i still have one more slot. There may be a more useful way to do this so what do you guys think? My bro has 2gb partition that is used to restore the OS which can be ran during the bootup process. However i dont think i can do that with mine. So, what are you thoughts?

  I tried logging into my computer after an "ungraceful" shutdown due to a power cut.. I got prompted with a message stating the user profile service failed the login. After reading a k/b on Microsoft I managed to re-login to the "corrupt" account by making registery edits.. But the next step (After having the ability to logon) is a major concern for me.. Would the guys at superuser suggest: 1) Carry on using said account 2) Re-install Windows to eliminate the possible chance of a reoccouring problem 3) Migrate all user data over to a new account and with that being said above. I had to issue the command line: net user administrator /active:yes to activate the hidden adminstrator account, would it be recommended/secure to disable the account or leave it active?

• Multiple VLANs, multiple subnets, single DHCP server?

  Hey guys! At my job we are prepping to transition from multiple LANs connected over slow VPN connections to a single MAN connected over fiber, and I've got a few questions. First of all, we are planning on making each physical site its own VLAN, but we would like to have a single DHCP server at the data center hand out IPs to each VLAN. We've pretty much got the VLAN tagging structure all worked out, but we would like to have our single DHCP server assign different subnets of IPs to each VLAN. For instance, VLAN 2 gets 10.0.2.x through 10.0.4.x, VLAN 3 gets 10.0.5.x through 10.0.7.x etc. We are an Active Directory based shop and we have a Server 2003 box handling DHCP (though we aren't averse to upgrading it to server 2008.) Is this feasible, or am I pipe-dreaming?

I have this 3.5" IDE enclosure, and it works great, I mean I love the idea of enclosures ( not the power feeding thing :), btw can't I just insert a chargable battery to feed the power when I am unable to find an electricity block), anyway my question is, when I finish the usage of the enclosure I safely remove it when using Windows or umount when working with Linux, and after that I got confused whether to turn it off or no? when I turn it off, the HDD suddenly stop spinning as if power failure not as when it was an internal and normally shuted down the pc. So is it ok to turn it off the way I've just said??? regards, ~Abed

We have been optimizing our application over the last few days and after running blitz.io, notice that our application times out after maybe 1000 hits in 30 seconds we experienced massive timeouts. In the 1 minute test apparently 74% of users would have timed out. What is normally done in this situation? Currently we have one web server and one database server. Would load balancing be the route to go?

• Wrong DNS query in Active directory network with NetBIOS enabled client

  The setup: Active Directory is enabled on the network (abcd.com) We have a single character host name (1.abcd.com) one of the desktop has an old XP with NetBIOS stuff enabled The Problem Whenever we query for any host name from the XP machine, the first character alone is taken for DNS query (one.abcd.com will query for o.abcd.com, two.abcd.com will query for t.abcd.com) Even if we give some IP, the application queries with numeric prefix (10.x.x.x will query for 1.abcd.com).Since we already have 1.abcd.com, all query and traffic ends up in 1.abcd.com After discussion with network guys, it seems netbios DNS queries by having some prefix etc. but none of them is actually sure on what is happening. Is there any docs which can explain this behavior ? Is this valid behavior in NetBIOS environment ?

  I just set up a 2008 R2 as DC, and DNS. Both worked fine, DNS works fine forward and reverse lookup. Now I wanted to install DHCP. As soon as the installation of the role is finished, I get this Event-ID Error 1046: Link When I first set it up there was also a Event-ID 1059 Error: Link The dhcp server is authorized. I don't know what else I should do. Getting crazy here, hope you guys can help me.

• Static route in conflict with a default route

  Hi guys, I have a default route configured. 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth1 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.1 I'd like to add a static route to pass traffic destined for 192.168.1.51 via a load balancer's redundant virtual interface at 192.168.1.2. ip route add 192.168.1.51 mask 255.255.255.255 via 192.168.1.2 When I try to add the static route I get this error. Error: either "to" is duplicate or "default" is garbage." It doesn't want to add the static route because it's in conflict with the default route. Is there a way around this? Regards Ossan
