• How to get my Apple Keyboard to work on Ubuntu?

  I'm trying to use a USB keyboard with my Ubuntu laptop, but when I plug in the keyboard, it is not even detected. I am trying to use the Apple Slim Aluminum Keyboard. It would also be nice if the USB ports on the keyboard could work, but I can get by without that luxury. How can I get my Apple Slim Aluminum Keyboard to work with Ubuntu? Update: After upgrading to a newer version of Ubuntu (9.04 Jaunty), the keyboard was detected and types just fine. There are a few quirks like the clear button being used as the numlock key but that seems to be well documented on other sites.

• Directly paste clipboard image into gmail message

  I would like to be able to directly paste my clipboard image into a Gmail message. I could then just do alt-print screen, go to Gmail compose and press ctrl-v to embed a screenshot, for instance. I'm not talking about embedding a image from disk into my email; that's easily done. I want to skip the step where I have to save it to disk first. Eudora/Thunderbird support this. There's a program that does this, it's at picturepaste.com, but it's paid (and and the website uses Javascript for no obvious reasons). You can see the demo movie there if it's not clear what I would like. I would like to find a free alternative, or make one myself, but I have no clue how picturepaste works.

• Remove Write Protection from USB

  My flash USB is write protected and I've tried every possible methods I've encountered over the internet, to get rid of this. Accessing the usb is not working. Format from my computer, is not working. Clear attributes with DiskPart is not working (can't be cleaned, Current Read-only State is Yes but Readonly is set to false... With Disk Management, I can't delete the partition... Is there any other method... With a specific software or somehow? Edit : I tried this on Windows 8.1.

• Listing pending reboots in windows

  I'm trying to install SQL Server 2008 on a Windows Server 2008 x86 system, and I'm getting an error saying "Rule 'Restart computer' failed." I've already found a lot of people saying to clear the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations, but sadly this key doesn't even exist in the registry on my server. I know I've run into this exact problem before, and that remedy did not work the previous time either. I eventually found a way to list the processes that currently require a reboot in Windows, which I used as a guide for what to uninstall. I cannot, for the life of me, find out how to do that again. Does anyone know how to list the pending required reboots in windows via command line or some other tool?

• How does one extract the Canon ip4600 drivers in inf form?

  I have a x64 machine which needs "additional drivers" for x86 clients. The problem I have is I cannot get the proper .inf files so I can use them. Canon only provides an .exe file, which when extracted has other .exe files and some dll files. I believe Canon changed their drivers, because I did have them extracted at one point, but sadly did not save them :(. The drivers are available here. Hopefully I am clear in what I am trying to do. Canon provides the .exe file. The .exe file when extracted does not produce any .inf driver files. Thanks!

  Is there a tool or a trick to easily duplicate a windows profile? My problem is that I have a local user profile and I like to copy that for another user. Additionaly that profile was created locally when a domain-user logged in, and I like to create a copy of that profile for a non-domain-user. Hope it's clear what my problem is.   How do i restart a shell session from within SSH when it looks something like this: anton@ubuntu:~$ c: command not found anton@ubuntu:~$ lib anton@ubuntu:~$ this is working, but its messed up anton@ubuntu:~$ I can execute commands, but as i input them nothing shows on the console, but as soon as i press enter the command executes and the output comes (without line-endings, as shown above) exec bash bash --login clear nothing really works, restarting the SSH session however works. Temporary solution is to start a screen session and every time the interface freezes you simply do Ctrl+a-c to start a new session and close the old one..

  I hope this is the correct site, I lose my way between the 4 sister sites :) Let me ask the question this way. all file systems I have seen before are hierarchical, that means a root directory, with some branched directories, and so on until we have files residing in these directories. except for AS/400 file structure, where it has a concept of a Library that serve somehow as a directory but one level only. Why not have directory-less filesystems where files are placed in a single location, but the file identifiers would be referenced by a database of tag/ file relation ships. This way there will be no need for symbolic links, one file may have multiple relations to multiple subjects, not only a single parent directory to contain. I hope the idea is clear.

  Hi! When i start my pc i get following message: The Logon User Interface DLL RtlGina2.dll failed to load I found solution here But i ca not log into my pc, neither in safe/normal mode. It is interesting that first time i succeed loging into safe mode, but change msconfig boot.ini to safemode with networking where i can not log in. And now every time no matter what i am choosing from F8 menu, i enter in safe mode with networking(where i get following error). So is it any way to log in back into "pure" safe mode. I am not sure that the question it`s clear enough ;-(

• MySQL slave server not removing old relay binlogs

  I have a MySQL server with slave replication on another host. Today I stumbled across the high disk usage of the slave host and invastigated what takes up all the space. As it turns out this space is occupied by the slaves relay logs. I tried to turn the expire_logs_days variable down and restarted the MySQL daemon but the reported disk space stays the same. I could't really find anything exept that FLUSH LOGS should clear old logs. I tried that with no result. Is there any way I can reduce the disk space that the relay logs take?

Hi everyone, Now, I lost one day to figure out, the reason my FreeBSD10 can not authenticate SSH user via LDAP because pam_ldap and nss_ldap do not support SSHA password when OpenLDAP support SSHA method. I have checked /usr/local/etc/ldap.conf, they just have these pam_password methods: clear, crypt, nds, racf, ad, exop. So, If I switch to CRYPT, I can authenticate successfully. So, IMHO, I will be very appreciative for any point or suggestion from everyone to make my FreeBSD10 PAM support SSHA, is there any way or can not?   I want to maximize the throughput of a data transfer between two servers. The copy will be made at the application layer using Robocopy. To clear things up, please check my Visio schema of the network: FS1---------(SW1)===========(SW2)--------- FS2 SW1 to SW2 is connected through 10 gigabit Fiber Channel ethernet FS1 to SW1 is connected through 1 gigabit ethernet FS2 to SW2 is connected through 1 gigabit ethernet I first idea I've come up with is to use LACP, so I could use two Gigabit Ethernet between each server and the switch. A collegue told me that LACP is for availability and not performance, so he reckon this solution will not work. Is he right? Do I have other options? Thank you very much

• RAID Read/Write Speed Gradually Slows

  This is actually a server at home, but I felt it was sufficiently complicated as to not have it on SuperUser and could easily apply to a professional situation. I have a file server running Debian (Lenny 5.0.4), and it has an XFS LVM on top of a RAID 5 with the OS drive separate from the RAID. It's also running apache, samba, and postgresql. Side note: before anyone asks, I'm using RAID5 because I get more bang for the buck on raw drive space, and still have some fault tolerance. When the box is started (via shutdown or reboot) reading/writing to it's samba share maxes out the gigabit network connection. Over time, this slowly degrades eventually becoming < 10MB/s; however, when rebooted the speed returns to maxing out the connection. Why is this happening, and is there a way to 'clear' out whatever's causing it without taking the server down? Thanks in advance!

  I have a production site, running off 10 servers. I've been given another virtual server on the same network as these 10 servers, to use for testing purposes. This server doesn't have it's own DNS entry. Therefore I need to do a redirect to the site hosted on this virtual server for a sub-domain of the site running on the 10 other servers. So Basically I was wondering how I would configure a sub domain of my production server to point at the Virtual server for testing. I'm guessing I need to modify my site file in /etc/apache2/sites-available and add another virtual host like the following and modify the redirect match: <VirtualHost *> ServerName SUBDOMAIN.DOMAIN.com RedirectMatch 301 (.*) **IP ADDRESS** CustomLog /var/log/apache2/SUBDOMAIN.DOMAIN.com.access.log combined </VirtualHost> Do I set the redirect match to just the IP on the Virtual server, and then configure another site file in the sites-available directory, which will recption this redirect and point the browser towards the HTML root? • Seeing a pre-logon app's GUI after logon (or ever)

  I'm looking for either a method to achieve this, or a clear reason why it's not possible. I use Scheduled Tasks to start an app with a GUI at system startup. I want to see that GUI's screen after logon without restarting it. I'm willing to type a password and/or re-logon and/or or use whatever app or tool to help, including changing the way I run the GUI app. It just can't wait for a user logon to start. How do I do it? Or if it's absolutely impossible, why? I've read about "Shatter attacks" but that doesn't seem to cover this. I'm most interested in XP and Windows7. If multiple solutions exist, of course I'd prefer the most convenient, flexible and/or open source.

  I don't fully understand the concept of a boot sector, I was hoping someone could clear this up for me. If you have two hard drives, with an OS installed on each, does each drive have its own boot sector? Does each drive need an MBR partition? I've got Linux and Windows on two separate drives. I've had issues when installing Linux and grub, and now I've finally decided to use the Windows bootloader to start up. Would Windows have gotten rid of grub when i used /fixmbr or does it stay there on the boot sector of the other drive?

  Hello, I am trying to uninstall Apache 2.2 on Windows XP. The original installation was from the binary msi distribution. The uninstall function of the msi ran successfully, but it failed to remove a couple of folders: C:\Apache2.2\conf C:\Apache2.2\logs I am unable to remove these folders manually because they contain files for which I do not have ownership. And this is the source of my confusion: why if I installed the program do I not have permission to remove it? To be clear, I do not have local admin rights (nor can I request them), yet the files in these two remaining folders are owned by Administrator. How is it that Administrator created these files (and how can I possibly remove them)? Thanks, -aj

  I was trying to capture localhost traffic with Ethereal, which doesn't work without re-routing localhost traffic to your router gateway. I didn't get the route command quite right, and messed up my routing table. I typed route -f to clear the routing table and rebooted, but when I finished rebooting, the routing table wasn't restored to its original state. I didn't use the -p parameter, so none of my changes should have persisted after a reboot. What can I do to restore the routing table to its default routes?

• Writing an internal disk from IMG, what XP software to use?

  I am trying to install the Chromium OS on an EEE PC 901, and I have succeeded in using Image Writer for Windows 0.2r23 to copy the IMG file to an SDHC card. Since the OS speed is limited by slow card access, I'd like to install the Chromium OS on the second, unused, internal SSD Drive, D:. However, Image Writer doesn't allow me to restore an internal drive from an IMG file. To be clear: I boot in XP on C: then run Image Writer to install the Chromium OS. Does anyone know how I can either convince Image Writer that D: is a removable drive or know of alternative program that will let me restore D: from an IMG file (non-windows file system)?
