  What is the exact point of using external database system if I have simple relations (95% querries are dependant on ID). I am storing users and their stats. Why would I use external database if I can have neat constructions like: db.users[32] = something Array of 500K users is not that big effort for RAM Pros are: no problematic asynchronity (instant results) easy export/import dealing with database like with a native object LITERALLY ps. and considerations: Would it be faster or slower to do collection[3] than db.query("select ... I am going to store it as a file/s There is only ONE application/process accessing this data, and the code is executed line by line - please don't elaborate about locking. Please don't answer with database propositions but why to use external DB over native array/object - I have experience in a few databases - that's not the case. What I am building is a client/gateway/server(s) game. Gateway deals with all users data, processing, authenticating, writing statistics e.t.c No other part of software needs to access directly to this data/database.

• Distributed Database Services?

  I'm working on a database-driven web service with clients in the US and Australia. We're currently hosted in the US, however our Australian clients are experiencing lag. The lag is primarily due to the fact that the pages launch AJAX queries which require some db work to be done on our database in the US and these take a while to perform a round trip. Ideally, we're looking for some kind of distributed database system which replicates our main US database in Australia (and possibly other locations if we choose to expand later on). Does anyone have any suggestions for services which offer something like this? Something like a CDN (CacheFly etc), which is web-based, simple to set up etc but for databases instead of static files. Ideally it would be completely transparent to the application and abstract away all the distributed database management, syncs etc.

• Linq Query Help Needed

  Say I have the following LINQ queries: var source = from workflow in sourceWorkflowList select new { SubID = workflow.SubID, ReadTime = workflow.ReadTime, ProcessID = workflow.ProcessID, LineID = workflow.LineID }; var target = from workflow in targetWorkflowList select new { SubID = workflow.SubID, ReadTime = workflow.ReadTime, ProcessID = workflow.ProcessID, LineID = workflow.LineID }; var difference = source.Except(target); sourceWorkflowList and targetWorkflowList have the exact same column definitions. But they both contain more columns of data than what is shown in the queries above. Those are just the columns needed for this particular issue. difference contains all rows in sourceWorkflowList that are not contained in targetWorkflowList Now what I would like to do is to remove all rows from sourceWorkflowList that do not exist in difference. • Maven problems using GAE and DataNucleus

  I'm having trouble retrieving 2 artifacts in my Maven/Java/Google App Engine project: com.google.appengine.orm:datanucleus-appengine:jar:1.0.7.final com.google.appengine:appengine-api-1.0-sdk:jar:1.3.4 There's a similar question posted, but each answer brings me back to the same error message. More detail I don't know if it is relevant, but rather than a version number, my original dependency for DataNucleus contained a variable. I am using Eclipse. <groupId>org.datanucleus</groupId> <artifactId>datanucleus-core</artifactId> <version>${datanucleus.version}</version> <scope>runtime</scope> I did not include my stack trace in Maven for brevity's sake. It has an explicit zero-arg constructor that simply calls super(). However, when GWT starts up, I get this error: 00:00:18.359 [ERROR] Rebind result 'com.mystuff.mypackage.FileUploadPanel.ValidatingFileUpload' has no default (zero argument) constructors. java.lang.NoSuchMethodException: com.mystuff.mypackage.FileUploadPanel$ValidatingFileUpload.<init>() Any idea what might be going wrong here?

• Database Performance Across 3 NetApp FAS2050

  I recently inherited a SQL Server 2005 box that has LUNs mounted on it from three different NetApp FAS2050 filers. The reason there are three is because the first two filers are out of space and our databases continually need more of it. What kind of performance impact (if any) does this setup have? Is it better to move the LUNs from the two other older filers to the newer one so that we have only one filer/controller for caching, etc ? This is in general. I apologize for not having more specifics.

• Update mysql database with arpwatch textfile database

  I'm looking to keep arpwatch entries in a mysql database to crossreference with other information I'm storing based on mac addresses. I've manually imported the arpwatch database into my mysql database, but being a novice with databases I'm not sure what the best way to continually update the database with new entries without creating duplicates would be. None of the fields can be unique, as even the time is duplicated frequently. I'm not interested in the actual arpwatch events like flip flop or new station, just the mac/ip/time pairings. Would a simple bash (or sql) shell script do the trick? Would it be possible to make the mac address plus the time be a composite key of some sort? the database is called utility, table is arpwatch, columns are mac, ip, time a seperate table named 'hosts' with columns mac, ip, type, hostname, location, notes has mac as the primary key. This table will correlate different ip addresses that a mac had over time using the arpwatch column initial import was done with MySQL Workbench using INSERT INTO commands with creative search and replace on the text file

• Filemaker 10 Advanced sending email via script & SMTP

  We are using a windows server box to run the databases but we have found via the headers that the emails are send from the local workstation. We have moved to a new email system and have set up a local linux server to securely send email out of our network to devices that do not support new protocols and encryption. But once we set up the script in filemaker 10 advanced (the local machine os x) we set it to the ip of our local box with no authentication but it does not send out an email. It creates a connection we see in the logs on the linux box but nothing more, additionally you can start a telnet connection with no issues. We have also made sure that there are no additional issue that we can see in our firewall policies. Any ideas where we should start? Does Filemaker 10 advanced log errors anywhere because I could not find any log files.

• [WPF] selected item in listbox unreadable because of the color !

  I dynamically create a collection of stackpanels in my listbox. In this stackpanel are contained labels and checkbox horizontally aligned. The problem is when I click on a stackpanel, the selection is unreadable because the line become dark-blue whereas the letters stay black so black on blue, you see nothing... how can I dynamically change the forecolor of the selected elements in the stackpanel ? I say dynamically and not in the xml file, because all those elements are dynamically created, base on a database... thanksssss!!

• Does multiple files in SQL Server when using RAID help reduce conflicts in growth and file-locking?

  I've been reading around and get the impression that if you are using RAID then using multiple SQL Server files within a filegroup won't yeild any more improvements, and the benefits are purely administrative (if you started to run out of space or wanted to partition off data into managable chunks for backups/balancing the data around your big server room). However, being a reasonably savvy software person, it's not unthinkable to hypothesise that, even for smaller databases that SQL Server will perform growth and locking operations (for writes) on a LOGICAL file basis, so even if you are using RAID, it seems to make sense to have multiple files in a file group to balance I/O, or does the time taken to reconstruct the data from distributed filegroups outweigh the benefits of reduced locking? I'm also aware that the behaviour and benefits may be different for tables/indeces/log. Is there a good site that distinguishes the benefits of multiple files when RAID is already in place?

• Connect to MS Sql 2008 on local VM

  I have a test machine. Server 2008 with Hyper V MSSQL 2008 Enterprise Lets call it MACHINE A on the VM it is as well Server 2008 with another MSSQL 2008 Ent Call it VM B I setup a DB on MACHINE A then backed it up and restored following the prepare database for mirroring instructions on MSDN onto VM B. I used to be able to connect to the VM B Instance from the main test server (MACHINE A) but now I cannot for some reason. It cannot seem to find the instance at all even when I browse network databases. I can ping the VM from any computer on the network and access its shares so I know it is discoverable. Just the end of a long day maybe I am missing something here.

  There are so many lightboxes to choose from, I'm looking for a very lightweight one to use in an embedded javascript widget that would be used on a number of different web sites. This would work in a similar way to the GetSatisfaction/UserVoice feedback tab. Here are the requirements for the lightbox: Very small javascript download (animation not needed) Self contained, not dependent on any libraries such as jquery, etc. Works in major browsers Lightbox displays HTML content from a given URL Close button (like GetSatisfaction or UserVoice) Dims background Avoids javascript namespace conflicts (or can easily be made to avoid them) CSS styling of lightbox does not interfere with site styling Have you used an existing lightbox scripts for this same purpose with similar requirements? • git strategy to have a set of commits limited to a particular branch

  I need to merge between dev and master frequently. I also have a commit that I need to apply to dev only, for things to work locally. Earlier I only merged from dev to master, so I had a branch production_changes that contained the "undo commit" of the dev special commit. and from the master, I merged this. Used to work fine. Now each time I merge from dev to master and vice versa, I am having to cherry-pick and apply the same commit again and again :(. Which is UGLY. What strategy can I adapt so that I can seamlessly merge between 2 branches, yet retain some of the changes only on one of those branches?

• Why does appending "" to a String save memory?

  I used a variable with a lot of data in it, say String data. I wanted to use a small part of this string in the following way: this.smallpart = data.substring(12,18); After some hours of debugging (with a memory visualizer) I found out that the objects field smallpart remembered all the data from data, although it only contained the substring. When I changed the code into: this.smallpart = data.substring(12,18)+""; ..the problem was solved! Now my application uses very little memory now! How is that possible? Can anyone explain this? I think this.smallpart kept referencing towards data, but why? UPDATE: How can I clear the big String then? Will data = new String(data.substring(0,100)) do the thing?

• How do I run AWS code on an EC2 instance?

  I just started with Amazon web services, and I have an EC2 instance. I downloaded the JAVA SDK and the Eclipse toolbox. I am able to run a sample program locally on my PC and connect to the Amazon databases, etc. My question is, what do I need to do to get this working on my EC2 instance? This may not even be specific to AWS. On Eclipse, I can just "Run as Application" and run any code. On the server side, what do I need to do? Should I ftp over my .java files? Should I export it to a jar and upload that? Do I need to install anything special to actually run it?

  Hi, I have updated to Snow Leopard and I removed mysql by following this post: http://forums.mysql.com/read.php?11,75256,255853#msg-255853 After that I have installed the mysql 64 bit community edition, but using the prefpane MySQL doesn't start. • Properly Hosting Multiple Sites on VDS

  I'm going to be moving about 7-10 websites (5-8 with Databases - MySQL) onto our new Virtual Private Server. I'm curious what the best way to host many sites on a single server is though. Do I create a directory for each site immediately within my root directory, and then point the domain names for each site to http://123.123.123.123/siteDirectory - or is there a more appropriate way to do this? I'm very interested in maintining control over how many concurent connections each site can have at any given time - would I be able to do that on the directory-level, or am I required to limit the concurrent-connections to the VPS itself?

  Just want to know everyone's experience and take on managing users/authentication on a multi-node db2 cluster with users groups. I have 17 apps in production (project based company, only 2 online apps), and some 30 users with 7 groups. prodsel - group that has select privilege on all tables produpdt - update group on selective tables (as required by the apps) proddel - delete prodins - insert permissions for the group Now what my company does is when an app uses certain user (called app1user), and needs select and insert privilege on a table, they 1. grant select and insert for prodsel, prodins respectively 2. add the user under those two groups... now this creates one to many relationship between user and privileges, and this app1user also gets select on other tables granted for the prodsel group. I know this is wrong. Before I explain, I need to know how this is done elsewhere. Please share your experiences, even if you use other Databases that uses OS level authentication.

  I'm getting the above mentioned error when backing up with ZRM, which is using mysqldump for backup. mysqldump --opt --extended-insert --single-transaction --create-options --default-character-set=utf8 --user=" " -p --all-databases "/nfs/backup/mysql01/dailyrun/20091216043001/backup.sql" mysqldump: Error 2020: Got packet bigger than 'max_allowed_packet' bytes when dumping table TICKET_ATTACHMENT at row: 2286 I have increased the size for 'max_allowed_packet' to be 1G in /etc/my.cnf which is the server setting and for the client side setting I've set it by running this command: mysql -u -p --max_allowed_packet=1G And I have verified that on the client and server side they are of the same value. This is to check the client side value according to this forum posting http://forums.mysql.com/read.php?35,75794,261640 mysql SELECT @@MAX_ALLOWED_PACKET - ; +----------------------+ | @@MAX_ALLOWED_PACKET | +----------------------+ | 1073741824 | +----------------------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec) And this is the check the server value setting. mysql SHOW VARIABLES | max_allowed_packet | 1073741824 | I have ran out of ideas, and tried searching within expert exchange and googling for solutions but so far none has worked. • I-Phone: Trying to check an Array for an item based on a string produced

  Hello! I'm writing a program that will concatenate a string based on letters, and then check an array to see if that string exists. If it does, then it will print a line in IB saying so. I've got all the ins-and-outs worked out, save for the fact that the simulator keeps crashing on me! • Finding the FORM that an element belongs to in JavaScript

  How can I find out which FORM an HTML element is contained within, using a simple/small bit of JavaScript? In the example below, if I have already got hold of the SPAN called 'message', how can I easily get to the FORM element? <form name="whatever"> <div> <span id="message"></span> </div> </form> The SPAN might be nested within other tables or DIVs, but it seems too long-winded to iterate around .parentElement and work my way up the tree. Is there a simpler and shorter way? If it wasn't a SPAN, but an INPUT element, would that be easier? Do they have a property which points back to the containing FORM? Google says no...

• sql and web encoding problem

  Guys, I've got an encoding problem I believe. I have upgraded from phpBB2 to phpBB3. The old databases were in latin1, the new ones have utf8 encoding. Already during the upgrade process some rows of the DB were only read partly into the new version, because of strange characters as it turned out. When I use PHP's mb_convert_encoding() function to convert those strings to UTF8 they end up e.g. as 0x0093, i.e. they must have been some kind of double quotes. Even after doing this conversion, they still show up as 0x0093 in the browser (the squares with 0093 in them when the browser does not know what to display). Can someone explain the problem here? I'm a little confused and afraid I don't see all the dependencies that need to work to have the correct encodings and the correct display thereof...
