• How do I connect remotely to SQL Server from Windows client?

  Hi All, Having a bit of an issue connecting to SQL SERVER remotely from Windows. I've verified that all of my settings are correct via SQL SERVER MANAGEMENT STUDIO EXPRESS and SQL SERVER CONFIGURATION MANAGER. I can connect remotely using ODBC drivers from other OSes (e.g. OS X, Linux, etc). However, when I connect with the same credentials from a remote Windows machine using "SQL SERVER" as the driver I am told that the system cannot connect. I've tried creating an ODBC Data Source and I get the same error: Connection failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 14 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen(InvalidInstance()). Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 14 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]Invalid Connection From the non-windows machines I can use the IP address of the SQL Server just fine. However, on the remote Windows machine, neither IP address nor named instance works. FYI, I can create an ODBC Data Source using the named instance on the machine actually running the SQL Server (but this is, of course, nothing special -- just proof that it isn't completely hosed). One interesting note: If I use SQL STUDIO 2005 from a Windows client machine, I can use the IP address to connect remotely. Still, the whole reason I bring this up is because I need to use a software package I've written to connect to SQL Server remotely from Windows machines as well. Previously the solution was only needed to xfer data from SQL Server into a PostGRES or MySQL database on non-Windows machines (due to DBA preference). However, now they also want to move the data from the legacy software to MySQL even on Windows. Any assistance would be most appreciated. Feel free to provide a full example connection string. Best

• Is SQL Server Compact *ever* OK to use on a web server?

  I'd like to host a personal database for about 500 people (1 database per person) on my web server. A person could possibly share their database with a friend or two. On my web server, I'd have some web services, perhaps for doing synchronization, and maybe even an ASP.NET Web Forms front end to the database. If I restart my IIS web server, would this likely cause database corruptions? Would this be expected to perform ok? If not Compact, should I instead use SQL Express and create a database in SQL Server for each of my 500 people?

  How do YOU debug a Scala program? I mean YOU as in the person posting the Answer :) Please answer only from personal experience, not from stuff you've heard or read on the Internet. You should not believe everything you read on the Internet, especially tales of complex open-source software configurations that actually work :-) The are many Java tools which claim to support Scala in some way or another, but I have so far struck out in trying to get any one of them to actually let me set a breakpoint in Scala code and step through it. These are big, major open-source IDEs I'm talking about here. The main problem in getting a debugger to work seems to be the "version hell" with fast-changing IDEs, Plug-Ins, JDKs, and the Scala language itself. Hence, the more detailed re-statement of the question is appropriate: What is the exact version number of the IDE, Plug-In, JDK, Scala, and even Operating System, that you are successfully using? • Capistrano SSH::AuthenticationFailed, not prompting for password

  I've been using capistrano successfully for a while now and all of a sudden in every project I've lost the ability to deploy. Environment: os X (Mavericks) ruby 1.9.3p194 rvm (locally, not on server) rails 3.2 and up RubyGems 1.8.25 I'm not using rsa_keys or anything I want capistrano to prompt for user and password. Suddenly it has decided not to ask for a password, but does ask for user. Then it rolls back and gives me the following error. [deploy:update_code] exception while rolling back: Capistrano::ConnectionError, connection failed for: sub.example.com (Net::SSH::AuthenticationFailed: Authentication failed for user [email protected]) connection failed for: sub.example.com (Net::SSH::AuthenticationFailed: Authentication failed for user [email protected]) This has occurred on my personal laptop and my iMac at work. It occurs when deploying to two different servers (both linux) I'm completely at a loss here. Any ideas?

  I'm working on a personal game engine in C# and need to give certain characters / sprites responses to conditions or certain patterns that they follow and since these patterns will be repeated over and over for other characters / sprites, I don't want to tie the patterns to the character / sprite. • Advice for building a browser-based audio mixer up to 32 tracks

  As a personal hobby I am looking to build an online audio mixer where I can upload individual instrument tracks, control individual volumes of each track, and export the mixed down version. I've been trying (and have come pretty close) with javascript. I really would like to stay away from flash if possible, but I'm really looking for suggestions for technologies to try. • Help with MySQL database structure - user notification system

  Hi, I'd like to send global notifications to my users (1000+ users) and allow them to close the notification box once they have read the message. Basically I may send one notification per week globally ie/ each user get the same message and they are not personal in nature. What is the best way to achieve this? Create 2 tables: **tb_messages** message_id massage_title message_content **tb_read_messages** user_id message_id is-read That way i can just show each user the current notifications that are not read? select * from tb_read_messages WHERE user_id = $user_id AND is-read = no OR is there a more efficient way? • How to set -Xbootclasspath for a JRE with a custom launcher?

  I have a Java application which is using a certain Java Runtime Environment. The application uses it's own launcher to startup the java virtual machine. No use of the java.exe, javaw.exe, javaws.exe binaries is being made -- as the application seems to have it's own launcher which is a different executable. This custom launcher is using the rest of the JRE files, such as bin/client/jvm.dll and rt.jar package etc. Now, the problem is that I want to set a boot class path for this custom launcher. The custom launcher does not support the -Xbootclasspath command line parameter, like the default java.exe does. Is there any way for me to set the boot class path now for this java runtime environment? Thanks in advance.   I am looking for a tool, which helps me to organize my personal bookmarks. I want to be able to assign tags and free comments to a bookmark. I want to search my bookmarks by tags date of bookmarking pattern in title pattern in url It would be nice to be web based to enable sharing my bookmarks between different machines. But for it would be OK, if it works on a single machine as long as it has some import/export way to transfer the links to a new machine replacing the old. As browsers I'm using Firefox and ChromePlus. It would be nice, if the solution works with both browsers. With free comments, I mean additional remarks stored for a bookmark, which is not essential for searching.

• Is Microsoft CCR gaining any traction?

  Microsoft's Concurrency and Coordination Runtime quite literally saved a project that was running into major issues with deadlocking. Since then I find that I use it more and more frequently for almost anything that requires asynchronous coding producing results that run lighter and faster than before. I can honestly state that it has transformed the way I think about multithread/multicore dev. Despite my personal love for CCR, there appears to be very little buzz surrounding it on the web and was wondering if anyone can offer any reason for this. Are there better alternatives, or is it a lack of promotion from MS, or are people simply happy with the existing tools?

• Slick PHP based image manager for managing user profile images

  Hi, I'm just throwing this out there as I'm plodding my way through creating a Member Photo album on a site i'm working on, where they can login and upload their photos to a personal gallery. I want this to be nice and lightweight, but still slick and "modern" with a modal based interface for the user. I'm surprised though that there is seemingly nothing open source out there which fits the bill - I've done a few searches on Google to no avail and can't seem to find anything. Lots of bloated photo galleries out there but nothing looks like it has been developed using more recent technologies. Is anyone aware of anything which might suit what I'm looking for? I'm fully prepared to try and code it myself but I'd be delighted if I didn't have to! Pure laziness you might say, but there's no point reinventing the wheel.

• WordPress theme blog not displaying well in FireFox-how to fix?

  Hi I have recently made a new WordPress theme (named {cssgroundup}) which I am using on my blog at www.richard-dickinson.com It is only a basic WP theme for my personal use as I am quite new to the WordPress platform (?). It is a work in progress (as is the blog content!) however it displays alright in IE browser but not so well in FireFox. Can someone help me edit it so it displays properly in most browsers or advise me how I can fix this please? I have asked for help at wordpress.org forums but haven't yet had any help!   I just migrated from XP x86 to Win7 x64 (clean install). I had a couple of data drives in my XP x86 system that I physically moved to my Win7 x64 system. When browsing a directory in any of the transferred drives, the only option available in the 'new' context menu is "Folder", i.e., Right-Click inside a folder New Folder (this is similar behavior for Win7 when using the context menu in c:\Program Files): However, whenever creating a new folder within any of the directories, all the context menu new items are available within the new folder: Steps I've taken that have failed to add the new context menu items: Removing all security permissions from a directory and sub-directories. Replacing them with new permissions. As well as removing inheritable permissions from the parent. Taking explicit ownership of a directory and sub-directories. Combing the above two. Sample of Effective Permissions that do not work: Steps I've taken that have succeeded to add the new context menu items: Adding the "Everyone" group to the drive and giving the group explicit "Modify" privileges. Giving the "Everyone" group explicit privileges smells wrong. I'm an administrator on my system; why should I have to add the "Everyone" group as well? Adding my username to the drive and giving full permissions. Again, since I'm an administrator on my system and the administrators group already has full control of the drive/directories/folders, why should I have to explicitly add my user name to the security permissions? Finally, The Question: Is it possible to have the New Item context menu have all available options by default without having to explicitly add the everyone group or a specific user name to the security permissions? I'm suspecting that the option may not be available unless the username is explicitly added to the security permissions. Of note: I've seen the registry hacks for updating the new items context menu; my preference is to avoid such hacks and return the functionality to the expected behavior an administrator should have.

• Casting Class into String and Vice Versa in JAVA

Is it possible to convert the String back into the original Class so that I can use that class variables? I am doing this in JAVA. • SQL Database dilemma : Optimize for Querying or Writing?

  I'm working on a personal project (Search engine) and have a bit of a dilemma. At the moment it is optimized for writing data to the search index and significantly slow for search queries. The DTA (Database Engine Tuning Adviser) recommends adding a couple of Indexed views inorder to speed up search queries. But this is to the detriment of writing new data to the DB. It seems I can't have one without the other! This is obviously not a new problem. What is a good strategy for this issue?

• Need software to convert RAR to ZIP ("store" mode - no compression) * Extract->re-archive changes date/time attributes

  I have tried all of the following applications (download.cnet.com - the free ones), and none of them will convert an RAR archive to a ZIP, without compressing the files ("store" mode). 7-ZIP would be fine, too. [The RAR is a "solid" archive with password (I know it), files "stored" - no compression, used WinRAR 3.5.1] PeaZip, 7-Zip, FilZip, TugZip, SimplyZipSE, QuickZip, WinShrink. (A couple of the apps let you try, but the program gives an error - indicating how bad the software is. (Like "unknown header # #.") None of these apps will do the conversion at all. IZArc 4.1 comes the closest. It will convert an RAR to a ZIP, but it compresses the zip. There is a general preference setting to "store" - but it doesn't effect conversions. I don't want to extract the RAR files and re-archive them because I need to preserve the modified/created file attributes. IZArc preserves them, but it compresses the files. WinRAR has the option to convert archives, but I get the error "skipping encryped archive" when I try to convert it. It asks for the password first, and I know it's right because that password opens the archive, and I can read/view all the files in the archive.
