• Tooltips with infinite timeout?

  I'm thinking of setting the timeout on all my tooltips in a WinForms application to infinity (or an extremely large value). The motivation is that it's annoying for the user if the tooltip disappears while I'm still reading it, without providing any extra value whatsoever as far as I can tell. Normally I wouldn't ask something like this on StackOverflow, but the overwhelming majority of all software sets timeouts on tooltips, so it makes me wonder whether perhaps there is some important consideration I'm missing? Or is this just an old convention that nobody gives further thought to? If you would hate infinite timeout as opposed to a short timeout, please explain why. (If you just think tooltips are a bad idea altogether then that's a separate consideration; this question is specifically about the infinite timeout.)

• What is the recommended toolchain for formatting XML DocBook?

  I've seen Best tools for working with DocBook XML documents, but my question is slightly different. Which is the currently recommended formatting toolchain - as opposed to editing tool - for XML DocBook? In Eric Raymond's 'The Art of Unix Programming' from 2003 (an excellent book!), the suggestion is XML-FO (XML Formatting Objects), but I've since seen suggestions here that indicated that XML-FO is no longer under development (though I can no longer find that question on StackOverflow, so maybe it was erroneous). Assume I'm primarily interested in Unix/Linux (including MacOS X), but I wouldn't automatically ignore Windows-only solutions. Is Apache's FOP the best way to go? Are there any alternatives?

• Address extraction from emails in Java

  I'm looking for an Java open-source library which is able to extract address information from a (German) email (signature). The library should find name street city, city code/postal code email tel/fax address-parser.com is an commercial product, but an free (albeit simple) library would be great. stackoverflow.com/questions/16413/parse-usable-street-address-city-state-zip-from-a-string is asking for something similar, but my problem is broader because the address information is hidden in a complete email. And there isn't a solution either... Any ideas?

• mysql utf8 turkish characters not correct recognized

  Hello, In mysql utf8 coded turkish data i can't search "I" and "i". when i search its giving result contains "Y" or "y". Because in latin1 "I" displaying as "Ý" and "i" as "ý". in latin1 data i was used latin1_general_ci for correct result. but there is not alternative collation for utf8. its already utf8_general_ci. is there any other people have some problems or do you have a solution. thanks. i have tried stackoverflow search engine to for this problem. if its have mysql and utf8 then my work true. try search "alI" and "ali". both search give another result. but both same in turkish. the "I" is capital i and capital "I" is "i" in turkish.

• Oracle: set timezone for column

  Hi, I need to do migration date-timestamp with timezone similar to described here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1664627/migrating-oracle-date-columns-to-timestamp-with-timezone. But I need to make additional convertion (needed to work correctly with legacy apps): for all dates we need to change timezone to UTC and set time to 12:00 PM. So now dates are stored in local database (New York) timezone. I need to convert them this way 25/12/2009 09:12 AM (local timezone) in date column = 25/12/2009 12:00 PM UTC timestamp with local timezone column. Could you advice, how to set timezone for date value in Oracle (I found only suggestions how to convert from one timezone to another) (for example in Java there is setTimeZone method for Calendar objects). We want to make a convertion this way: rename old date column to NAME_BAK create new column timestamp with local timezone iterate over old column for not-null values set timezone to UTC, time to 12:00 PM drop old column after testing of this migration

• my getJSON code doesn't work in jquery 1.4.2

• Parse Complex WSDL Parameter Information in C#

  I am attempting to parse WSDL, along the lines of the example given here. The author notes, in the comments, that the example is not capable of drilling down into complex data types. And in fact, when I run the example, it does not appear to even handle simple data types. I have poked around in System.Web.Services.Description.ServiceDescription class, which is used in the example, but cannot find any actual parameter or return type information at run-time. I gather that I may need to do some manual parsing of an xsd file? Both google and stackoverflow appear to lack a complete example of how to drill down into complex types programmatically, so... how should I do this?

  Hello again. I'm in the process of designing and testing various ideas for an application whose main functionality will be to notify users of occurring events and offer them with a choice of actions for each. The standard choice would be to create a queue of events showing a popup in the taskbar with the events and actions, but I want this tool to be the less intrusive and disrupting as possible. What I'm after is a good book or papers on studies of how to maximize user productivity in these intrinsically disruptive scenarios (in other words, how to achieve the perfect degree of annoying-ness, not too much, not too little). The user is supposedly interested in these events, they subscribe to them and can choose the actions to perform on each. I prefer books and papers, but the usual StackOverflow wisdom is appreciated as well. I'm after things like: Don't use popups, use instead X Show popups at most 3 seconds Show them in the left corner Use color X because it improves readability and disrupts less That is, cognitive aspects of GUI design that would help users in such a scenario.

I've seen someone solicit SO with a similar question but there was only one response so I'm going to solicit the community again. An applicant who might have been attractive the first week might become overshadowed by other applicants further down the road. These are all difficult to track. Knowing that recruiting intelligent people should be an ongoing process, what are the best web applications for managing the process?   I've browsed around the other articles on StackOverflow that relate to caching WCF proxies for reuse, and I've read this article explaining why I should explicitly open the proxy before calling anything on it. I'm still a little hazy on the best implementation details. My question is: when should I open and close proxies for service calls on a website, and what should their lifetime be (per call, per request, or per web app)? We aren't planning on leveraging cached security contexts at the moment (but it's not unforeseeable). Thanks!

  Hi, I am trying to generate the WS client jar directly from the @Webservice class(es). Let's take this example : package com.example.maven.jaxws.helloservice; import javax.jws.WebService; @WebService public class Hello { public String sayHello(String param) { ; return "Hello " + param; } } I can generate a war file and use glassfish to serve this webservice, and from there I can use the glassfish WSDL URL to generate the client sources. What I am trying to do is to skip the glassfish part. From my maven project defining the webservice, I would like to use the jaxws-maven-plugin to create the client classes but I cannot find any way to specify the actual URL of the webservice.   Hello again Stackoverflow people! Assume I have these words: smartphones, smartphone I want to match the substring "phone" from within them. However, in both case, I want only "phone" to be returned, not "phones" in the first case. In addition to this, I want matches only if the word "phone" is a suffix only, such that: fonephonetics (just an example) is not matched. I assumed that the regex (phone([?=s])?)\b would give me what I need, but it is currently matching "phones" and "phone", but not the "fonephonetics" one. I don't need "phones". I want "phone" for both cases. Any ideas about what is wrong, and what I can do? Thank you in advance!

• Using sed for introducing newline after each > in a +1 gigabyte large one-line text file

  I have a giant text file (about 1,5 gigabyte) with xml data in it. All text in the file is on a single line, and attempting to open it in any text editor (even the ones mentioned in this thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/159521/text-editor-to-open-big-giant-huge-large-text-files ) either fails horribly or is totally unusable due to the text editor hanging when attempting to scroll. I was hoping to introduce newlines into the file by using the following sed command sed 's/>/>\n/g' data.xml > data_with_newlines.xml Sadly, this caused sed to give me a segmentation fault. From what I understand, sed reads the file line-by-line which would in this case mean that it attempts to read the entire 1,5 gig file in one line which would most certainly explain the segfault. However, the problem remains. How do I introduce newlines after each in the xml file? Do I have to resort to writing a small program to do this for me by reading the file character-by-character?

  i've a webview in my app. It has + and - buttons to increase and decrease the font. When I start the view, the text occupies whole 320 pixels width. I'm following the way mentioned in "http://stackoverflow.com/questions/589177/how-to-increase-font-size-in-uiwebview" I'm seeing the increase and decrease of font. But once the font size increases, text is not occupying full view. It won't occupy whole 320 pixels width. As and when text size increases, the width of final text in web view decreases slowly. Why? How to avoid it?

  HI, I'm completely new to Bash and StackOverflow. I need to move a set of files (all contained in the same folder) to a target folder where files with the same name could already exist. In case a specific file exists, I need to rename the file before moving it, by appending for example an incremental integer to the file name. The extensions should be preserved. The file names could contain dots in the middle. Originally, I was thinking about comparing the two folders to have a list of the existing files (I did this with "comm"), but then I got a bit stuck. I think I'm just trying to do things in the most complicated possible way. Any hint to do this in the "bash way"?

• JSON - msg.d is undefined error

  Hi - Webmethod returns an array of objects - something like this {"d": [[{"Amount":100,"Name":"StackOverflow"}, {"Amount":200,"Name":"Badges"}, {"Amount":300,"Name":"Questions"}]]} On the client-side, when the JSON is referenced using msg.d, I get a msg.d is undefined error. I am using jQuery JavaScript Library v1.4.2 How do I access the elements in the array of objects? Adding more findings, code and questions: I don't see __type in the JSON object that is returned. Does that mean that the object sent from the server is not JSON formatted? When the __type is not a part of the response, I will not be able to use msg.d? (msg.d is undefined) Some more: 1. I can access the elements from client side using msg[0][0].Amount - How can I specifically JSON format my return object (from the server)

• SQL Server schema comparison - leaves behind obsolete files on synchronization

Usually I synchronize FROM database TO database project (using the Visual Studio data scheme compare new schema comparison). The synchronization works, BUT when I for example corrected the spelling of a key in the database and synchronized it - the file with the WRONG spelling of a key remains (albeit is commented out inside). the new one is correctly added. This file happens to be in: [project name]/Scheme Objects/Schemas/dbo/Tables/Keys But for sure there are others elsewhere. how to automatically remove such obsolete files when synchronizing? thnx

• Rails: Cannot add :precision or :scale options with change_column in a migration?

  This seems to have been asked before: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1402547/rails-decimal-precision-and-scale But when running a change_column migration for :precision or :scale they don't actually affect the schema or database, but db:migrate runs without errors. Is it possible to implement more than one iteration scenario for a class? More details (EDIT): For example I have class TreeNode implementing single tree node. The whole tree can be expressed using only one this class. I want to provide iterators for iterating all direct and indirect children of current node, for example using BreadthFirst or DepthFirst order. I can implement this Iterators as separate classes but doing so I need that tree node should expose it's children collection as public.   I have written an application using opengl es view. Now I want to add a uitableview to display on the screen. However I am needing some guidance on how opengl es view and the other views play together nice. For example I have read some things that would lead me to think I need to pause the opengl view when the table is displayed. • Do you have any tips for comments code to keep them in step with the code?

  G'day, I've read both of Steve McConnell's excellent Code Complete books "Code Complete" and "Code Complete 2" and was wondering if people have any other suggestions for commenting code. My commenting mantra could be summed up by the basic idea of expressing "what the code below cannot say". While enjoying this interesting blog post by Jeff about commenting I was still left wondering "When coding, when do you feel a comment is required?" Edit: Oops. Seems to be a duplicate of this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/121945/how-do-you-like-your-comments so sorry for the noise. Thanks to my, seemingly, SO shadow for pointing it out - wouldn't have thought I was that interesting. Now off to read the original post and see if it is relevant. Edit: I meant to emphasise the best appraoch to ensure that your comments will stay in step with the code. Maybe expressing an intent rather than the mechansim for instance.

• Strong name validation failed on VB.NET Assembly

  I have a VB.Net 1.1 application works just fine after compiling in Visual Studio. However, I want to use ILMerge to combine all the referenced assemblies into a single executable just to make it easier to move around. After I send it through ILMerge and try to run it I get the error "Strong name validation failed for .exe" ..... But none of my stuff is strong named! I saw this post here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/403731/strong-name-validation-failed and tried running it through 'sn.exe -Vr .exe' but that gives me this error: ".exe does not represent a strongly named assembly" Has anyone else had this problem before? How do I fix it?

• Java: "Could not find the main class. Program will exit"

  I'm trying to run SQuirreL SQL. I've downloaded it and installed it, but when I try to run it I get this error message: Java Virtual Machine Launcher. Could not find the main class. Program will exit. I get the gist of this, but I have not idea how to fix it. Any help? more info: I'm on Windows XP pro. I have java 1.6 installed, and other apps are running OK. The install ran OK. I believe I've followed the installation instructions correctly. To run it, I'm invoking the squirrel-sql.bat file. Update This question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1417328/could-not-find-the-main-class gives some background on this error from the point of view of a java developer.
