  I have been googling about the differences between them. Bacula has lots of roles BackupPC is easier to configure Bacula works with agent, not rsync (great for Windows backups) It seems that Bacula is most often compared to Amanda though, while BackupPC seems a perfectly lovely and popular backup distribution to. I currently backup my servers with rsnapshot, but I am looking for a professional scalable solution that could also back-up 50 hosts without problems. Preferably a solution that can offer bare metal restores for my Linux servers. I am not looking to reinstall the exact same version of Plesk, the software, etc...

• SSL Certificate Stops Working after Server Reboot on IIS7, W2K8

  We recently upgraded from W2K3/IIS6 to W2K8/IIS7 and have been having problems with our SSL Certificate (Thawte 123 SSL certificate) ceasing to work after rebooting. Initially, the intermediate certificates would stop working and we could repair the problem by reinstalling all of them after the reboot (annoying, but not the end of the world). Unfortunately, this is no longer working. The certificate chain has been doublechecked by several tools and people with decent knowledge but no one has been able to identify the cause of the problem. The bindings in IIS have been checked as well The cert itself is also still valid. NOTE 1: I have seen THIS question which seems to be very similar, but there is no satisfactory answer in that post and it's a year old so not likely to get one any time soon. NOTE 2: I'm asking this on behalf of a co-worker so won't be able to provide instant feedback to any questions/suggestions but I will pass it on. • Windows 2003 and 2008 AD integrated DNS zones

  We have a Windows 2003 server DC1 which is our primary DC holding all FSMO roles. It also is a DNS server for our domain domain.local which is an active directory integrated zone. We also have a Windows 2008 DC name DC2 All servers have the correct DNS entries etc. However on all dns servers there are event id 4515 indicating there are duplicate zones in separate directory partitions and only one will be used until the other is removed. And I see these, there is a zone for domain.local under the default naming partition CN=System, CN=MicrosoftDNS, DC=domain.local. As well as the DomainDNSZones partition DC=DomainDNSZones, DC=DOMAIN, DC=local, CN=MicrosoftDNS It seems that the partition in the Default Naming partition is the one which is being used currently.   A co-worker of mine is using an air-card. It prompted him to install software in the notification tray, but he clicked on the wrong thing and the icon went away without him installing that software. How can I get that icon back? He can't install the software then. I know that you can download the software from the site, but we did that and were having issues from that too. Restarting and trying again doesn't pop up the notification either. Thanks.

• Performance problems on RDC to our Terminal-Server Win2008 R2

  Hello, we have a new win2008-R2 (2x Xeon X5570, 32GB RAM). There I have installed the terminal-server roles, thats all OK. Currently 5 users are working at this server, but all get a very low performance in their remote-desktop session. Sometime it takes 1-2 seconds till the keyboard-inputs will be performed and shown. At the clients I run RDP v 6.1 We have also an older TS-server (based on Win2003 with an Opteron-CPU), there are working about 20 users at the same time. There I do not have the troubles with the inputs at the remote-desktop sessions. Both servers are connected to the same gigabit-switch. Any ideas what could cause the troubles at the Win2008 R2? • cannot add a user to sysadmin role in SQL Server

  Hello everyone, I am using SQL Server 2008 Management Studio. The current logon account belongs to machine local administrator group. I am using Windows Integrated Security mode in SQL Server 2008. My issue is, after log into SQL Server Management Studio, I select my login name under Security/Logins, then select Server Roles Tab, then select the last item -- sysadmin to make myself belong to this group/role, but it says I do not have enough permission. Any ideas what is wrong? I think local administrator should be able to do anything. :-) thanks in advance, George

• Demoted domain controller and now IIS has permissions issues

  I have a machine that was a domain controller and everything else, includin an IIS site. I built new 2 new domain controllers and transferred the FSMO roles and waited a day and then demoted the original domain controller. Now the IIS site says : HTTP Error 401.2 - Unauthorized You are not authorized to view this page due to invalid authentication headers. I have a call in with the web app vendor, but maybe someone can guess what I need to fix now. I haven't looked at IIS since this was installed and am pretty lost. I thought about restoring the machine from a backup, but I think that would be an Active Directory disaster, right? The server is Windows 2008 (not R2). The new DCs are 2008 R2

• emacs and putty on windows 7

  My workstation was recently updated to Windows 7. I've downloaded putty and have configured it to the same settings I had under Vista. Whenever I ssh to a vm running Centos 5.4 and try to run emacs on a file, I'm getting an error about a connection to an X server: [ecto1 ~]$ emacs foo.bar Connection lost to X server `localhost:10.0' I never received this error message when I had Vista. I can get around it by aliasing emacs to 'emacs -nw', but I don't feel that I should have to do this. My co-worker has the same hardware that had the same upgrade and his sessions do not seem to be doing this. Any advice? I can't find anything on google and don't know where else to start. • How to stop nginx on Mac OS 10.6.3

  I've installed nginx server on my Mac from MacPorts: sudo port install nginx. Then I followed the recommendation from the port installation console and created the launchd startup item for nginx, then started the server. It works fine (after I renamed nginx.conf.example to nginx.conf and renamed mime.types.example to mime.types), but I couldn't stop it... I tried sudo nginx -s stop - this doesn't stop the server, I can still see "Welcome to nginx!" page in my browser on http://localhost, also I still see master and worker processes of nginx with ps -e | grep nginx. What is the best way to start/stop nginx on Mac? BTW, I've added "daemon off;" into nginx.conf - as recommended by various resources. Thank you.

  We've been using KVM for almost a year strictly on CentOS 5.x as the KVM host, with Fedora and Ubuntu workstations accessing the KVM host and its guests using virt-manager, virt-viewer, and ssh. Is anyone aware of a way to access the KVM host using virt-manager from a Windows workstation? We have one co-worker who would like to access the KVM host, from a Win7 system. EDIT #1 I'm familiar with running a X11 server on windows such as Xming, and remote displaying virt-manager from the KVM host to a windows workstation, but what I'd really like here is to know of any solutions native to windows, i.e. is there a version of virt-manager that'll run on windows.

  I'm new here and also with networking but i can't set internet conection for some vlan created. I have a Cisco CE500 switch and created 4 vlans define by the roles in the switch. Vlan 2: Servers (role) (port 3-4) Vlan 3: Desktop (role) (port 5-8) Vlan 4: Guest (role) (port 9-12) Vlan 1 is default, Connect to the ADSL Modem/Router Port 2 assign to the Router Role (vlan 1) The switch is connected on port2 the ADSL Modem (DHCP) 192.168.2.254 The goal is: All Vlan should have internet connection.   hi. not sure if this is the right place, but hopefully someone might have thoughts on a solution/vendor. Starting to spec out a project that will require multiple (50-100) developers to be able to manipulate source files/scripts for a large scale project. The idea is to be able to have each app go through a dev/review/test process, where the users can select (or be assigned) the role they're going to have for the given app. I'm looking for web-based, version control, issue tracking, user roles/access, workflow functionality, etc... Ideally, the process will also allow for the reviewed/valid app to then be exported to a separate system for testing on the test server/environment. This can be hosted on our servers, or we can do the colo process. I've checked out Alassian/Collabnet, but any thoughts you can provide would me appreciated as well. thanks

• What would happen if I did a "Boot to VHD" to a VHD that was configured to run under Hyper-V?

  Microsoft has a Hyper-V based VM I'm interested in running, however, I don't have access to a Windows Server 2008 machine to try it on, only a Windows 7 Pro x64 machine (Windows 7 does not support Hyper-V). But instead of those routes, I'm wondering: What would happen if I tried to go the "Boot to VHD" route using this Hyper-V VHD? Is it possible that during the boot process, Windows would simply notice that hardware had changed and adjust accordingly, installing the appropriate drivers and continuing on without a hitch?

• Server 2003 Functional Domain DFS Replication Problem (Files being moved to conflicted folder for no reason)

  We have 2 Windows 2003 servers configured with a DFS namespace and we are running into problems with the redirected profiles we have setup. Basically, one server is the FSMO master for all roles, and we have another DC that is the DFS namespace primary server. We have profile redirection setup using the \dfsnamespace\userprofile formula. The FSMO master DC locks up occasionally (don't ask :), and when it does, and we bring it back up... All of the user profiles hosted on the DFS namespace get overwritten when a user logs in. The current profile gets moved to the conflicting and deleted items folder. This strikes me as really odd considering the whole point of using DFS was to provide some redundancy in case one server went down. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance! -Nate

• Django freezes when adding objects through the admin

  I have a Django 1.1 website running via Apache/mod_wsgi with a PostgreSQL 8.3.1 database. Recently, when I added objects through the admin interface, the connection froze up and I lost several worker processes, so I had to restart Apache. Upon trying to replicate this, I found that it only happens through the admin: if I go into the Django shell and issue the same insert, it works fine. Also, performing an UPDATE operation works without issues, so just INSERTs. I've rebuilt indexes on PostgreSQL and run a full VACUUM. Error logs don't show anything, and I can't figure out for the life of me what's wrong. Anyone have any ideas?

• What is the method to reset the Planar 1910m monitor?

  My monitor (a Planar, apparently model number PL1910M) is not working. (It is flashing a green / orange sequence which I believe to be an error code. The sequence, in case it helps consists of orange and green three times quickly followed by a longer orange, then another green followed by a long period where both colors appear to be present). I vaguely recall a co-worker suffering from a similar problem, and our IT department "resetting" the monitor by holding down a certain set of keys as they apply power. Unfortunately, I do not remember what that key sequence was, our IT department is not responding, and the Planar web site is blocked by the content filtering firewall we have in place! What is the sequence to perform the reset? (For bonus geek-credit, what does the code mean... as if it indicates a blown component clearly a reset will not help me. ;-))

• Remote Desktop Services create LAN and WAN user groups

  I'm setting up one server with the gateway, server host and web access roles on it. I know that isn't ideal but I don't expect to have many simulatenous users. I want users to access remote desktop web access and connect to the server host via the gateway as outlined here which avoids opening 3389 to the internet. Users will be connecting from the LAN and the WAN. What I'm looking to do is to allow some users LAN access but not WAN access and added plus would be if security settings (such as no clipboard) would be different when accessing via the WAN. Is this possible? It seems all users can logon to remote desktop web access by default. They can't run the remoteapps once logged in though without the proper permissions. Can I prevent them from even logging into remote web access? Since they renamed it from terminal services to remote desktop services it has made my Googling a bit harder. Thanks!

The server also hosts legacy apps for which we lack reinstallation resources; thus our desire to preserve it as close to intact as possible while removing the orphaned roles. All efforts to remove SQL 2005 thru Control Panel and ARPWrapper /remove fail with error 29528. Should I abandon this and leave the orphan SQL dormant, or is it reasonable to remove it post-demote?

  My dad mentioned a co-worker suggested using a device, that might use cdma to route calls through IP to save costs on a certain overseas project we're on- since our home base is quite far from there. I've never heard of such a device, so if it does, i'm wondering, if its specific to particular ISPs, or if you can just pick one off the shelf, plug it into an arbitraty internet connection, and make calls using it and a cellphone of some sort? As you can tell, details are sketchy, so... if such a device dosen't exist, saying so might be a right answer ;)

• How to connect a remote IP Phone to our VOIP Network?

  We have an IP phone system in our office, and about 8 VoIP phones running on the system. We have a remote worker, who is literally states away. We'd like to connect his phone to our VoIP network, so that he has a business phone and an extension to which we could transfer calls. I was thinking, although I don't know for sure, that a pair of Cisco routers could be used in some way to make this work. I imagine a VPN solution, where I have one router connected to the phone network and the other router connected to the remote phone. Then have a site-to-site VPN set up so that the remote router... And that's where I'm stuck. I know the remote router will need to use the DHCP server of the phone system. I've never set up something like this, so I am seeking the help of the community here. What is the best way to get this remote VoIP phone RELIABLY connected to our internal VoIP network?
