  • Debugging Windows 2008 (Roaming Profile) user logon

    Hi, I would appreciate some help debugging my windows 2008 profile service. Any domain account that logs on to my 2008 machine gets a +- 20 second waiting time on "user profile service" I am using roaming profiles, they are around 8mb in size, and most folders are already redirected to a network share. event log registers no errors, there is more than 1 network card installed, but I have the correct card listed as "primary" Is there any way to increase verbosity of logging on specifically the "user profile service" ?     How can I install and setup a fortinet SSL VPN client on a VPS that's running on Centos? I have problem to do it because all guide I have are all using GUI which is not installed on the VPS to save resource.   • Outlook Connector - not syncing webmail inbox?

    I use Outlook 2007, and have a Hotmail/Live webmail account. Using Outlook Connector, I want them to be synced to Outlook 2007 on my Windows 7 HP machine, however when I click on the folder name (e.g. [email protected]) in the 'Navigation Pane' under all the usual folders such as 'Inbox', 'Deleted Items', etc, it just shows a blank inbox stating that there are no items to be shown.

    I've downloaded a lot of Windows 7 versions (release candidates, trial, x64 and x86, etc). The bad part is that the downloaded iso files don't have clear names, so I cannot to know wich version is each file. I can check the files inside the iso using 7-Zip, by example. Then, reading the files and folders in the installation disk, how can I tell what Windows version and platform the installation refers to?

Everything looks okay, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get to this screen: I need to set up some excluded folders, since the backup media is a little smaller than the home folder. I need to exclude the replaceable 100 GB video directory.

  • Data loss through permissions change?

    I seem to have deleted some files on my media drive, simply by changing the permissions. The Story I have many operating systems installed on my computer, and constantly switch between them. I bought a 1TB HD and formatted it as HFS+ (not journaled). It worked well between OSX and all of my linux installations while having much better metadata support than NTFS. I never synced the UIDs for my operating systems so the permissions were always doing funny things. Yesterday I tried to fix the permissions by first changing the UIDs of the other operating systems to match OSX, and then changing the file ownership of all files on the drive to match OSX. About 50% of the files on the drive were originally owned by OSX, the other half were owned by the various linux installations. I started to try and change the file permissions for the folders, and that's when it went south. The Commands These commands were run recursively on the one section of the drive. sudo chflags nouchg sudo chflags -N sudo chown myusername sudo chmod 666 sudo chgrp staff The Bad Sometime during the execution of these commands, all of the files belonging to OSX were deleted. If a folder had linux based files it would remain intact but any folder containing exclusively OSX files was erased. If a folder containing linux files also contained a subfolder with only OSX files, the sub folder would remain but is inaccesible and displays a file size of 0 bytes. Luckily these commands were only run on the videos folder, I also have a music folder with the same issue but I did not execute any of these commands on it. Effectively I have examples of the file permissions for all 3 states - the linux files before and after, and the OSX files before. EDIT Running ls on one of the "empty" deleted OSX folders yields this: ls: .: Permission denied ls: ..: Permission denied ls: subdirA: Permission denied ls: subdirB: Permission denied ls: subdirC: Permission denied ls: subdirD: Permission denied I believe my files might still be there, but the permissions are screwed.

The current format which is followed by the OS [to show date-modified, etc.] is MM/DD/YYYY or M/D/YYYY, whereas I have been comfortable with DD/MM/YYYY or D/M/YYYY format. I am finding it hard to refer Date-modified [which I use often] of files and folders.

For example: Cookies - %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies History - %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\History Cache - %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files However, for some reason, Internet Explorer occasionally stops using the normal locations and instead creates new folders under %TEMP% and/or %TEMP%\Low for this data. For example: Cookies - %TEMP%\Cookies %TEMP%\Low\Cookies History - %TEMP%\History %TEMP%\Low\History Cache - %TEMP%\Temporary Internet Files %TEMP%\Low\Temporary Internet Files Why does Internet Explorer do this, and how can make it use the normal locations again?

    Our office XP computer crashed this afternoon. I know that we had Norton Ghost doing regular backups on an external hard drive. My question is how do you restore from that backup? PS. When I plug in the external drive into my own Windows 7 machine it has two folders: - 9c590f17be2ef53d13bb00be2a - Norton Backups I can't open the first one (it says I don't have permissions) but the second one contains a bunch of files with the .v2i extension. Any help would be appreciated?

    I have a few folders in my Windows folder (I'm running Windows 7) like this: C:\Windows\1C4551A64743409391E41477CD655043.TMP\WiseCustomCalla.dll All they contain is WiseCustomCalla.dll. I've read that it is part of McAfee antivirus or whatever. The problem is: I have never ever installed any antivirus software on my machine. What is this file and what is it doing on my machine? I am also using Steam and PunkBuster if that helps.

I was expecting to do this with an Audit setting on one of the MS Security Essentials folders but I wasn't sure which one and how to avoid getting swamped with messages.     As I understand it, Google Drive and Dropbox, the two cloud storage providers I happen to know, can only sync a predefined folder that is created upon installation. I'd be happy to have an automated synchronisation of my folders in the cloud, but I'm not ready to change my habits, and start saving all my documents in the folder imposed by the provider. Is it possible with one of these, or any other you might know, to sync the full Windows user folder instead?

  • Apple, Time Capsule: can I use it for servers ?

    hi, i was wondering if I can use Time Capsule from a server. Let's say I have an ubuntu server, and I'm running some websites and web applications on it. I would install these appications on ubuntu but then store the "file folders" of each website or application (with images, videos, etc.. ) on Airport capsule and leave only the application files on the server.   • So I want to separate my Program Files from the hard disk with the other system files. What is the b

    So I am running Windows 7 as my only OS. I have two hard drives on my computer. The first one is a 74GB Western Digital 10K RPM Raptor. The second one is a 1TB Seagate Barracuda (couldn't remember if it was a 7200.12 or some other decimal after the 7200). The OS in installed to the Raptor and I am just using the Barracuda for storage. With this setup, in case you couldn't guess already, the Raptor fills up quick and I am constantly having to maintain file locations. And although it is nice to have that quicker boot time and program loading, the time spent maintaining the drive makes me waste more time overall. So I am looking for a way to try to keep it clear while still keeping up system loading speeds. A performance hit on games and such is easily acceptable and as long as I can guarantee a 5GB space on the Raptor, I can always just temporarily move the disc image there. So I am figuring that having games installed like Boarderlands and Mass Effect, as well as having large files such as linux distro DVD disc images in My Documents, I probably should be moving my personal files and Program Files directories to the Barracuda. I currently have folders on the Barracuda for this, but this means routinely copying files over and I can't really do anything with the Program Files folder that already exists. The best I can do is remember to designate the install directory of any program installation to the alternative install directory, which I can't seem to get to ever work right with Steam. With that in mind, is there a way that is not too drastic to let me just change some folders and system settings once and everything works fine afterwards for my setup? I have considered just reinstalling Windows 7 to the Barracuda but that would defeat the purpose of the Raptor except for running disc images off of. I am also heard a bit about being able to use symlinks to fix this, but I have also heard that symlinks in Windows are not necessarily the same and not as well supported on Windows. An example a friend mentioned was something about how if you have a symlink in Windows on a small hard drive to a large hard drive and the contents the symlink points to is larger than the small hard drive's capacity, then Windows will think the smaller hard drive is full. So is there a fix/workaround that will let me use symlinks across hard drives without the issues or is there a better solution I am not being told about, not mentioning, or not thinking of?
