• Looking for some help with GWT/Derby in Eclipse

  I'm attempting to learn AJAX via this site. I've made it down to the section where it says "you must put the code in the onModuleLoad()" (right above listing 4). I found two areas in my Eclipse project that mention onModuleLoad(): slicr.java and the actual EntryPoint.class file in the gwt-user.jar/com.google.gwt.core.client package. When I try to add the contents of listing for to slicr.java, I get tons of cannot be resolved to a type errors and I cant add anything to EntryPoint.class as it appears to be locked from editing. I really appreciate any help someone could give me!

• Need an alternative to two left joins.

  Hey guys quick question, I always use left join, but when I left join twice I always get funny results, usually duplicates. I am currently working on a query that Left Joins twice to retrieve the necessary information needed but I was wondering if it were possible to build another select statement in so then I do not need two left joins or two queries or if there were a better way. For example, if I could select the topic.creator in table.topic first AS something, then I could select that variable in users and left join table.scrusersonline. Thanks in advance for any advice. SELECT * FROM scrusersonline LEFT JOIN users ON users.id = scrusersonline.id LEFT JOIN topic ON users.username = topic.creator WHERE scrusersonline.topic_id = '$topic_id' The whole point of this query is to check if the topic.creator is online by retrieving his name from table.topic and matching his id in table.users, then checking if he is in table.scrusersonline. It produces duplicate entries unfortunately and is thus inaccurate in my mind.

My apologies if I come off as being extremely lazy but I need to make efficient use of my time and make sure am not just swallowing any garbage of the web. Therefore I am looking for the best and most informative and with a fair bit of detail for the Reflection chapter in .Net. Reflection is something that comes up time and time again and I want to extend my reading from what I know already from the official 70-536 book. I'm not a big fan of MSDN but at the moment that's al I'm using. Anyone got any other good published reading material off the inter web that can help revision for the entrance exam???   I'm going to build a little system for personal use, and I want it to save data to a database. The language is going to be C#, and so I'd like to use this opportunity to get my head around LINQ to SQL. I have some DB experience and I know my SQL, but it was all in school using Access, which is giving me trouble, and so I'd like to use another DB, something that is small in size, easy to install, and should work with LINQ to SQL. The problem is: I don't know any except Access, and am looking for recommendations. To sum it up: I need a lightweight, easy to install, linq-to-sql supporting database for a small system on a home computer, any recommendations?

• My multithread program works slowly or appear deadlock on dual core machine, please help

  I have a program with several threads, one thread will change a global when it exits itself and the other thread will repeatedly poll the global. No any protection on the globals. The program works fine on uni-processor. On dual core machine, it works for a while and then halt either on Sleep(0) or SuspendThread(). Would anyone be able to help me out on this? • Help getting ActiveScaffold to work properly

  Hey there I was curious about the ActiveScaffold Rails plugin, but somehow I can't get it to work properly. I've followed the steps which are described on http://activescaffold.com/tutorials/ . The table and everything shows up and when I click on "Create new", the dialog pops up. However, when I fill out the form and click "Create", I just get "500 Internal server error". In the server log, it says "NameError (wrong constant name ###):", with ### being what I entered in the first form field. If I don't enter anything in the form, it says "NoMethodError (undefined method `new_record?' for #):"... So what am I doing wrong here? Thanks in advance for your help :)

• Help me understand Rails eager loading

  I'm a little confused as to the mechanics of eager loading in active record. Lets say a Book model has many Pages and I fetch a book using this query: @book = Book.find book_id, :include => :pages Now this where I'm confused. My understanding is that @book.pages is already loaded and won't execute another query. But suppose I want to find a specific page, what would I do? @book.pages.find page_id # OR... @book.pages.to_ary.find{|p| p.id == page_id} Am I right in thinking that the first example will execute another query, and therefore making the eager loading pointless, or is active record clever enough to know that it doesn't need to do another query? Also, my second question, is there an argument that in some cases eager loading is more intensive on the database and sometimes multiple small queries will be more efficient that a single large query? I've been told that in another bool I have in the same app I shouldn't deallocate anything because everything clear out when the bool return true/false, but what happens on this void?

• Do Hibernate table classes need to be Serializable?

  I have inherited a Websphere Portal project that uses Hibernate 3.0 to connect to a SQL Server database. There are about 130 Hibernate table classes in this project. They all implement Serializable. None of them declare a serialVersionUID field, so the Eclipse IDE shows a warning for all of these classes. Is there any actual need for these classes to implement Serializable? If so, is there any tool to add a generated serialVersionUID field to a large number of classes at once (just to make the warnings go away) ?

• help understanding the concept of javascript callbacks with node.js, especially in loops

  hi I am just starting with node.js. I have done a little ajax stuff but nothing too complicated so callbacks are still kind of over my head. I looked at async but all I need is to run a few functions sequentially. I basically have something that pulls some json from an api, creates a new one and then does something with that. obviously i can't just run it because it runs everything at once and has an empty json. mostly they have to go sequentially but if while pulling a json from the api it can pull other json while it's waiting that is fine. I just got confused when putting the callback in a loop. what do I do with the index? i think i have seen some places that use callback inside the loop as kind of a recusive function and don't use for loops at all. simple examples would help alot thanks!

  Hello, I need to be able to play a .wmv video in a Windows Media Player component on a web page starting at a particular specified point in the video right away. I can embed the component and play the video. The problem is that even if I specify the location with The PARAM “currentPosition”, the video starts to play from the beginning. This appears to be because the requested position in the video has not been loaded yet. If I wait until the video has been loaded to the requested position and refresh the page, it will then play from the requested position. It seems that the video must start loading from the requested position in order to start right away. If this is the correct way, how would I go about doing it? If it is not, what is the proper way to do it? It can obviously be done, because YouTube’s players work like this. Thank you,

• Wordpress Database SQL query help needed

  Hi, I've written a PHP script to access the latest item from the wordpress database, which it does. But I need to use it twice, once for the latest item from a specific category, and another from a differerent category... But right now I cannot figure out how to put the query together. The post has a post_parent, which in another table, called wp_term_relationships, is referred to as object_id, and has a term_taxonomy_id, which then relates to a different table, called wp_terms where the term_taxonomy_id is now term_id and then you have the category slug name available to select... I really cannot understand how this query would work though. I've made a really crap mock up of it, to try to "visually" explain what i'm trying to do... • Help porting a bit of Prototype JavaScript to jQuery

  I have already implemented some AJAX pagination in my Rails app by using the example code for the will_paginate plugin--which is apparently using Prototype. But if I wanted to switch to using jQuery for future additions, I really don't want to have the Prototype stuff sitting around too (yes, I know it's possible).
