• SQL SERVER – Read Only Files and SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)

  Just like any other Developer or DBA SQL Server Management Studio is my favorite application. Any any moment of the time I have multiple instances of the same application are open and I am working on it. Recently, I have come across a very interesting feature in SSMS related to “Read Only” files. I believe it is a little unknown feature as well so decided to write a blog about the same. First create a read only SQL file. You can make any file read by Right Click >> Properties >> Select Attribute Read Only. Now open the same file in SQL Server Management Studio. You will find that besides the file name there is a small ‘lock’ icon. This small icon indicates that the file is read only. Now let us attempt to edit the read only file. It will let us edit the file any way we want, however when we attempt to save it, it gives following pop-up value. The options in the pop-up are self explanatory and I liked it. The goal of the read only file is to prevent users to make un-intended changes. However, when a user should have complete control over the user file. User should be aware that the file is read only but if he wants to edit the file or save as a new file the choices should be present in front of it and the pop-up menu precisely captures the same. Now let us check option related to this feature in SSMS. Go to Menu >> Options >> Environment >> Documents You will find the third option which is “Allow editing of read-only files; warn when attempt to save”. In the above scenario it was already checked. Let us uncheck the same and do the same exercise which we have done earlier. I closed all the earlier window to avoid confusion. With the new option selected when I attempt to even modify the Read Only file, it gives me totally different pop up screen. It gives me an option like “Edit In-Memory”, “Make Writeable” etc. When you select “Edit In-Memory” it allows you to edit the file and later you can save as new file – just like the earlier scenario which we have discussed. . If clicked on the Make Writeable it will remove the restriction of the Read Only and file can be edited as pleased. • Customisation / overriding of the Envelop ecs files

  There are few usecases where the requirement is to customise the envelop information (Interchange/Group ecs file). Such scenarios might be required to be used for only few of the customers. Hence, in addition to the default seeded envelop definitions, it also required to upload the customised definitions. Here is the steps for achieving the same. 1. Create only the Interchange ecs and save 2. Create only the group ecs and save 3. Use the same in B2B 1. Create only the Interchange ecs and save :       Open the document editor and select the required version and doctype. During creating new ecs, ensure to select the checkbox for insert envelop.       Once created, delete the group and transactionset nodes and retain only the Interchange ecs nodes, including both header and trailer. Save this file. 2. Create only the group ecs and save       After creating the ecs file as mentioned in steps of Interchange creation, delete the Interchange and transactionset nodes and retain only the group ecs nodes, including both header and trailer. Save this file. 3. Use the same in B2B       These newly created ecs can be used in B2B by 2 ways.              a. By overriding at the trading partner Level:              This will be very useful when the configuration is complete and then need to incorporate the customisation. In this case, just select the Trading partner - document - select the document which need to be customised.              Upload the newly created Interchange and group ECS files under the Interchange and group tabs respectively and re-deply the associated agreement.              The advantage of this approach is              - Flexibility to add customised envelop definitions to the partners              - Save the re-work of design time effort.              b. By adding another document definition in Administration - document screen:              This scenario can be used if there is no configuration done at the trading partner level. Create the required document revision and overtide the Interchange and group ECS files under the Interchange and group tabs respectively. Add the document in Trading partner - document. • Indentify Codecs & Technical Information About Video Files

  Have you ever wanted to play an audio or video file but didn’t have the proper codec installed? Today we’ll show how to determine codecs, along with a host of other technical details about your media files with MediaInfo. Installation Download and install MediaInfo. You can find the download link at the bottom of the page. Note: When installing MediaInfo there is a recommended software bundle which you can opt out of by selecting Do not install option. Each recommended software choice may be different, like in this example it offers Spyware Terminator. The cool thing though is they use Open Candy which opts you out of the install. Just double check to make sure you’re not installing extra crapware. Using MediaInfo The first time you run MediaInfo it will display the Preferences window. There are various option such as language, output format, and whether or not you want MediaInfo to check for new versions. Click OK. Select a file or folder to analyze by clicking on the File or Folder icons on the left of the application window or by selecting File > Open from the menu. You can also drag and drop a file directly onto the application. MediaInfo will display details of your media file. In Basic view, you’ll see basic information. Notice in the example below the video and audio codecs, along with file size, running time of the media file, and even the application used to create the video file (Writing application).    You can switch to some of the other views by selecting View from the Menu and choosing form the dropdown list.   Sheet View will present the information a bit more clearly. You can see in the example below that the video and audio codec are listing in clearly identified columns. (AVC is often more commonly referred to H.264.)   Tree View is perhaps the most detailed. You can see from the example below the codec used for this AVI file is XviD.   Scrolling down even further you’ll see additional information like video and audio bit rates, frame rate, aspect ratio, and more.   In Basic View (and also in Sheet view) you can click to find a player for your file. In this instance with an MP4 file, it took me to the download page for Quicktime. This is by no means the only media player for this file, but if you are stuck for how to play a media file, this will forward you to a solution that works. You can do the same thing with Video codec. Click Go to the web site of this video codec to find a download.   MediaInfo is a simple but powerful tool that can be used to discover the details of a media file, or just to find a compatible codec. It works with most any video file type and is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Some Mac and Linux versions, however, are currently command line only. • Check if file is locked or catch error for trying to open

  I'm trying to handle the problem where a user can try to open, with an OpenFileDialog, a file that is open by Excel. Using the simple FileInfo.OpenRead(), it chucks an IOException, "The process cannot access the file 'cakes.xls' because it is being used by another process." This would be fine to display to the user except that the user will actually get "Debugging resource strings are unavailable" nonsense. It seems not possible to open a file that is open by another process, since using FileInfo.Open(FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read, FileShare.ReadWrite) chucks a SecurityException, "File operation not permitted. Access to path 'C:\whatever\cakes.xls' is denied.", for any file. Rather unhelpful. So it's down to either finding some way of checking if the file is locked, or trying to catch the IOException. I don't want to catch all IOExceptions and assume they're all locked file errors, so I need some sort of way of classifying this type of exception as this error... but the "Debugging resource strings" nonsense along with the fact that that message itself is probably localized makes it tricky. I'm partial trust, so I can't use Marshal.GetHRForException. So: Is there any sensible way of either check if a file is locked, or at least determining if this problem occurred without just catching all IOExceptions?

• qemu-img: Could not open $FILE

  I received a single-file VMDK from a vendor that has a virtual appliance for a particular product I'm interested in evaluating. We run a KVM solution (Proxmox) so I tried converting the file but on that system qemu-img blows up. (I was able to convert (multipart) VMDK files from bitnami without error.) So I figured I'll just yum install qemu-img on a RHEL 6.3 VM and do it there. But despite the fact that I can file the file just fine when I run qemu-img on it I get this error that it can't open the file: [root@host dir]# file 1.vmdk 1.vmdk: VMware4 disk image [root@host dir]# qemu-img info 1.vmdk qemu-img: Could not open 'vmdk' I've seen some other people post on the interwebs that they've had this problem but none of them seem to have a resolution. Does anyone have any ideas? I have checked the MD5SUM already. EDIT1: [root@host dir]# qemu-img info -f vmdk 1.vmdk qemu-img: Could not open '1.vmdk' EDIT2: Ran strace per suggestion. Not sure what to look for... Here is a possible: ioctl(3, CDROM_DRIVE_STATUS, 0x7fffffff) = -1 ENOTTY (Inappropriate ioctl for device)

• Explorer and open file dialog not responding (Vista)

  Any explorer window opened for the first time on my machine causes the explorer window to display the folders tree and folder path in the address bar immediately but the file/folder list pane is blank and the window displays 'Not Responding' in the title bar, this hangs for up to a minute or more. Any file dialog displays 'Not Responding' in the title bar. The files list is eventually displayed after a few seconds or more. Steps to repro: Close all open instances of explorer Windows Key | Run | [enter a folder path such as 'c:\temp'] Or within any app: use a file open / save dialog Once there is at least one open instance of explorer the performance is still fairly poor but not nearly so bad and file lists are displayed in a timely fashion. What I've tried: Cleaned up registry with CCleaner tool, and uninstalled all other unused software Checked nothing unwanted running at startup with Autoruns Removed any ISO burner/recorder/mount software Still to try Get latest version of everything - especially stuff with shell extension behaviour such as TortoiseSVN Anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks alot. Update I'm wondering if this is related, I'll try the hotfix when I get home and report back: KB972685 - FIX:Explorer.exe hangs when using a shell extension written using MFC Update 2 Before I got a chance to try the hotfix it seems one of the above actions fixed this for me; either the removal of IsoRecorder or TortoiseHg (which I was no longer using anyway). Update 3 A similar issue with Explorer.exe has come back since installing TortoiseHg 1.01 :-(

• Free or Open Solution for Storing and Charting CSV data

  I'm presently storing CSV files, combining them, opening them in open office, creating pivot tables and then generating charts from the spreadsheet. I've looked at OOBase, but appending csv files to base is clunky for some reason. SQLite seems like a good database solution, but I've haven't found a good charting program that connects to it with ease. Although open office (or libreoffice) maintains the references and allows you to update the information, this process is far from efficient. There are too many steps and it seems one program should handle all of these tasks. A better program would be more intuitive, allow you to simply add inserts into a database, and include an interface for standard charting settings. EDIT Simplest Automated Analysis and Chart Generation Tool? The above answer references Spotfire and Tableau, each of which has a free 14 and 30 day trial. Each program is nicely streamlined and designed. I'm looking for a program between this quality and LibreOffice. Can you recommend a better open or free desktop solution for windows?

• Windows file locks allowing multiple users to write to open file over network

  I have 6 windows computers (xp,vista,7) that need to access a samba share (Ubuntu 12.04). I am trying to make it so only one client can open a file at a given time. I thought this was pretty standard behavior of file locks, but I can't get it to work. The way it is right now a file can be open by two users, and changed and saved by either one of them. The last file saved overwrites what ever changes the other user made. At first I thought this was a Samba configuration problem, but I get this behavior even between two windows machines. So far I have only tested: Windows Xp Windows Vista Windows XP Samba << Windows Vista and both give the same behavior. When I tested the Samba configuration, I had set strict locking = yes and get errors logged like this: close_remove_share_mode: Could not get share mode lock for file _prod/part_number_list_COPY.xlsx Eventually all of the files are going to be moved onto the Samba share, so that is the configuration I am most concerned about fixing. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. EDIT: I tested an excel file again, and it is now working properly in both above mentioned cases, I am also no longer getting the above mentioned error. I don't know what happened, perhaps a restart fixed it? (also works with strict locking = no) Although I still need to find a solution for the CAD/CAM files we use, the software is Vector and it does not seem to be using file locks. Is there any software that I can use to manage these files, so two people can't open/edit them at a time? Maybe a windows application that forces file locks? Or a dirt simple version control system? (the only ones I have seen at are too complicated for our needs).

• some windows 8 metro (modern UI) apps don't open, but live tiles DO work

  Some of my default windows 8 metro (modern UI) apps don't work properly, the apps are the Weather and the News apps. when I open them, I only get the loading screen, that is, the big colorful screen with the logo in the center, and the "loading" spinning dots. They just keep like that forever and never actually open. There are no error messages or anything. The strange this is that the live tiles for those apps DO work and show current information. current weather for my location (saved before they started failing) and current news. Both apps did work well in the past, and every other default windows 8 app I've tried work well (both live tiles and the app itself). Every other non-default apps that I've downloaded still work correctly, so the problem so far is only with those two apps. (weather and news). I really don't know since when exactly they started to fail because I really don't use them (or any metro app) that often, so I can't recall if I did something like installing some other app, either metro or regular, or messed with some drivers, etc. they simply don't open now, but they DID work before. any ideas?

• Mac SMB connections to Windows 2003 server, leaving Open Files

  We have several Mac clients (Both 10.5, and 10.6) mounting a share from a Windows 2003 server. At least once a day, our archivist will go into this share to archive items from it, to the backup server. Most of the time, she has no issues: she copies the folder to the archive server, when it's done, she deletes it from this share. Then, she will come upon one, and it will say she doesn't have permission. When I go into the Open sessions, it will say that a particular user has a READ lock on the file, in Windows 2003. Of course, this person does not have the file open, and the only way we can delete it, is to close the open session on the file. My thoughts: The Mac likes to "sprinkle" Hidden "Resource Forks" on SMB servers, and possibly, when this Mac who last wrote to that share, closes out of the file, and these files still exist. Windows 2003 has a bug, that doesn't properly "release" the OPLOCK on the file? Steve Ballmer just doesn't like Mac's, so he wants to annoy everyone by not releasing file locks :-) What can be done about this? It happens every day, and sometimes several times per day! • .lnk doesn't open, no errors

  I have a shortcut (.LNK) on my desktop to a MS Access database out on a network drive. When I double click that shortcut I get an hour glass for about 10 seconds and then nothing. No errors, no access opening, nothing happens. It appears as if there's not even an MSAccess process running in the background. The file successfully opens from: The Open dialog in Access The commandline "C:\path\to\MSACCESS.EXE C:\path\to\shortcut.lnk" The commandline "C:\path\to\MSACCESS.EXE C:\path\to\whatTheShortcutPointsTo.mdb" The file silently fails to open from: Double clicking the shortcut.lnk Double clicking the mdb file that shortcut.lnk targets At first I thought it had to do with how the link handler operated but the fact that it does the same exact thing when I try to open the mdb directly in explorer makes me think it's an issue with explorer. I've tried restoring, deleting, and recreating the association with the extension. I've tried running MSACCESS.EXE /regserver. I've run out of things to throw at it. In case this is specific to MS Access 2007; I'm trying to use 2007 :)

• Windows 7 Synchronize folders BUT while some files are open

  I need some way to synchronize 2 drives I have. I want to do this ofter (once a day or so) There is the main drive that I want to clone/synchronize on a backup hard disk. The problem is in that there is an open TrueCrypt file mounted as a drive, and its live. If you don't know what true crypt is, basically you create a file on a hard disk and that file is encrypted. It's constantly open and modified live. Also Its pretty large. 100GB + I will use freefilesync . There are many tools that can do that. My question is, is it safe to copy the encrypted file while its open ? Does the software freeze the file in one state and copies it ? Or will I get a corrupted file on the other drive ? It was not clear to me how windows handles that. I read something about shadow copy, and the software says that it supports this. Does anyone know something on the matter that can help me ? or some software that will work ok in my scenario ? Thanks

• JBoss 5.1.0.GA and huge vfs-nested.tmp

  I noticed this while running a performance test with JMeter. For first half an hour everything was fine and the /server/all/tmp directory size was around 36M. Then suddenly the tmp directory grew up to 6.1G. The space was taken by jar files inside vfs-nested.tmp. I found https://jira.jboss.org/jira/browse/JBAS-7126 but adding that config but it made no difference.

• "error module dav_svn does not exist"

  I accidentally deleted the mod_svn on my webserver, and now I am stuck. Everything I try to do anything with it (remove it or reinstall it with apt-get), I get that message and apt fails. I know I could reinstall Apache, but I am trying to avoid that at all costs (unless I can do it in such a way that would keep my config files). Any ideas on how to deal with this?

• Likewise: joined Active Directory but cannot write shares.

  I have never used a Linux system in an AD environment before and am trying to join my laptop running Ubuntu to join our Active Directory (DC is a Windows Server 2008 machine) using Likewise-open. Using the GUI wizard, I have joined the domain. I can mount network shares using CIFS Problem: I only have read access to our fileserver. What more is needed to get the AD to recognize me as a user who has the appropriate rights? Any help is appreciated.
