• AWS Load Balancer with a static IP address

  I have a set-up running on Amazon cloud with a couple of EC2 Instances running through a load balancer. It is important that the site has a unique(static) IP or set of IPs as I'm plugging in 3rd party APIs which only accept requests made from IPs which have been added to their whitelist. So basically unless we can give these 3rd parties a static IP or range of IPs that the requests from the site will always come from then we would be unable to make any calls to them. Anyone knows how to achieve this as I know that Elastic IPs are not compatible with load balancers? If I were to look up the IP of the load balancer DNS name (e.g. dualstack.awseb-BAMobile-ENV-xxxxxxxxx.eu-west-1.elb.amazonaws.com resolves to 200.200.200.200) would that IP be Static? Any help/advise is greatly appreciated guys.

• MinGW screw up with COLORREF and RGB

  I am trying to build a 3rd party open source project using MinGW. One of the dependencies is wxWidgets. When I try to make the project from MSYS I get a compiler error from /MinGW/msys/1.0/local/include/wx-2.8/wx/msw/private.h In function 'COLORREF wxColourToRGB(const wxColour&)': error: cannot convert 'RGB' to 'COLORREF {aka long unsigned in}' in return This is somewhat odd given that, according to Microsoft the RGB macro returns a COLORREF. In fact, looking in H:\MinGW\include I find wingdi.h with the following code #define RGB(r,g,b) ((COLORREF)((BYTE)(r)|((BYTE)(g) << 8)|((BYTE)(b) << 16))) What sort of thing would cause this error? Is there some way I can check to see if COLORREF and RGB are being included from wingdi.h and not somewhere else? Is that even worth checking? Specifications GCC version 4.7.2 wxWidgets version 2.8.12 (I'm new to C++ and MinGW specifically but generally computer and programming literate)

• Is my code really not unit-testable?

  A lot of code in a current project is directly related to displaying things using a 3rd-party 3D rendering engine. As such, it's easy to say "this is a special case, you can't unit test it". But I wonder if this is a valid excuse... it's easy to think "I am special" but rarely actually the case. Are there types of code which are genuinely not suited for unit-testing? By suitable, I mean "without it taking longer to figure out how to write the test than is worth the effort"... dealing with a ton of 3D math/rendering it could take a lot of work to prove the output of a function is correct compared with just looking at the rendered graphics.

• drupal hook just before inserting/updating user info

  Hi, I want to hook into drupal's user registration and be able to stop it or allow it to proceed just before database insert. All validations and 3rd party stuff must be done and just before inserting I need to hook in. What is the hook and the operation to do this? I tried 'validate' operation in the hook_user. But, after I check against my logic and let the registration proceed, it should not fail due to some other validation. If I let it proceed, no application logic after that should stop the registration (unless the DB engine fails or something of course). If I stop it, I will set a form error so that nothing happens. How can this be accomplished? P.S. I am using Drupal 6.16

• MVC Custom Model Binder Binding Multiple Values

  Hello everyone, I have a scenario in which I have multiple sources to bind to my model. For one, I have a view tied to a strongly-typed model, but this scenario also entails posting data to this view from a 3rd party site. Essentially, what I believe I am after in the custom model binding is to investigate the form values in the Request object within HTTPContext to see if I have a field such as "postedFirstName". If so, I want to bind that value instead of the textbox "FirstName" in my view. I've done a good bit of searching but have not find anything that exactly addresses such a scenario. • DNS Lookup in ASP.Net

  I have a Windows server that is intermittently losing the ability to lookup DNS information. I'm trying to get to the root cause of the problem but in the mean time I'd like to be able to monitor whether the server can perform lookups. Basically, it should attempt to lookup some common hostnames and the display 'Success' if the lookups are successful. I see lots of examples of doing this with third party components in ASP.NET but I would prefer to be able to do this with a single ASP.Net script that would be portable and not require anything additional be installed.

• Can I configure Eclipse / JBoss integration so it does not rely on deploying Jars to the "server/def

  I am using MyEclipse 7.5 with JBoss 4.2.3 GA. When I define my local development JBoss server in MyEclipse it always wants to deploy jars, wars etc. to the "server/default/deploy" directory. Unfortunately our JBoss directory structure for production is "server/XYZ/deploy/abc" (driven by a third party). As a result our Dev JBoss instances are different from our QA/Staging/Production JBoss instances. Is there a way to configure Eclipse to use JBoss but deploy to that specific folder path "server/XYZ/deploy/abc" rather than the default one "server/default/deploy"?

• How can i handle mouse double click event on textbox?

  Hello, I want to open one child window on mouse double click of textbox. I know the only event available in Silverlight is MouseLeftButtonDown and you have to simulate double click. However it still doesn't work when i click in the middle of the textbox. It only works when i double click on the border of the textbox. Anybody has any ideas of how can i do this? If any 3rd party library is available then also it's fine. Thanks in advance:)

  Greetings, Using the Facebook API, I have obtained an OAuth access token for a user. I can use it to retrieve information about the user and post to their wall, etc. I'm trying to figure out how to (or if there is a way to) programmatically get a list of pages a user owns (so that they can be presented in a drop-down list on a third-party site). I have been unable to find such a method in the Facebook API, but I'm hoping I've missed something. Thanks!

• What is the best method of assessment for computer science students?

  This question is a bit more philosophical so feel free to remove if you like but it's been bugging me for the last 4 years! As a final year student I find that exams can be often be passed with a couple of days of cramming, without necessarily retaining or understanding the content i.e. a regurgitation of lecture notes is often enough to gain high marks. A friend of mine is about to graduate with an honours degree whose final year evaluation was based solely on practical work (a project, assignment marks and the creation of a poster) yet all of this work could have been completed by a third party. Personally I don't think either of these methods of assessment is sufficient as I am currently on track for a 1st class honours in artificial intelligence and computer science and believe this is mostly due to my skill in passing exams not my skill as a programmer or my vast in depth knowledge of any of the subjects I have "studied". Surely there is a better way to assess our skills - isn't there?

It contains Scala classes, Java classes and a number of 3rd party jars. I assumed there would be some kind of deployment option in the Scala Eclipse plugin but I've drawn a blank. • Treating a fat webservice in .net 3.5 c#

  I'm dealing with an obese 3rd party webservice that returns about 3mb of data for a simple search results, about 50% of the data in that response is junk. Would it make sense then to remap this data to my own result object and ditch the response so I'm storing 1-2 mb in memory for filtering and sorting rather than using the web-responses own object and using 2-4 or am I missing a point? So far I've been accessing the webservice from a separate project and using a new class to provide the interaction and to handle the persistence so my project looks like this |- Web (mvc2 proj) |- DAL (database/storage fluent-nhibernate) |- SVCGateway (interaction layer + webservice related models) |- Services -------------- |- Tests |- Specs I'm trying to make the application behave fast and I also need to store the result set temporarily in case a customer goes to view the product and wants to go back to the results. (Service returns only 500 of possible 14K results). So basically I'm looking for confirmation that I'm doing the right thing in pushing the results into my own objects or if I'm breaking some rule or even if there's a better way of handling it. • Design pattern to encapsulate common funtionality among UI controls

  I'm brainstorming some ideas around a pattern to use for the following scenario. I have some 3rd party controls that I want to add common functionality to. Functionality is added by handling several of the the events and doing certain things when the events fire along with adding some private variables to hold some state info between events. I want to reuse the code and functionality so this is what I'd typically do. Create a class for this functionality and pass in the instance of the control that I want to add the functionality to in the constructor. Then I can add event handlers to the control in the instance of the class. Can anyone think of alternative patterns to use in order to create this kind of reusable functionality.

  specifically WM6x, winCE5x Now my current understanding from trawling the msdn etal is that the IMAPIAdviseSink::OnNotify callback can be made from any old thread; from (ce)mapi or perhaps even from a third-party service provider. Under WM6x, i cannot seem to coax an in-thread response by invoking HrThisThreadAdviseSink, since while this function is declared in mapiutil.h, a definition appears not to exist (in cemapi.lib or wherever??) ~But i notice that all the OnNotify callbacks i receive derive from windows messages that i am receiving on my thread (=looks to me like an in-thread implementation in any case under cemapi)... So, can anyone confirm that this is infact always the case -or am i just getting lucky right now? ah, i should add that my advise source is IMAPISession::Advise erm i should also say that i might have cross-posted this on the msdn forum -but they're mostly numptys over there,,

  I'm writing some attendance software. Each member will have an ID card with a barcode which they will use to sign in to events. How long should the barcode field be in my database? I'd like to accept Code 39 and Code 128 barcodes. I know these are variable length codes, so what should I set the max length to? Thanks!   I'm looking for a way to obtain information similar to the following console applications, remotely: net use net share netstat -ano However, I need to be able to do this without running a 3rd party application on the system. This effectively rules out using psexec to execute the command remotely, because psexec would then be installed as a service. I should add that I have administrative credentials on the remote system. I've considered using WMI's remote execution ability, but that requires me to write output to a file and then retrieve it. It's possible, but I'd like to know if anyone has a better way. I am using Delphi 2010.

• Protobuf compiler for several languages

  Hi, In my project I have components written on Python, ObjectiveC and J2ME. I want to use protobuf as data interchange format. However, there are one issue I need to resolve. Google implementation doesn't support ObjC and J2ME. There are 3rd party implementations that supports those languages. But I really don't want to be depended of several protoc implementations. I am working with a WCF web service that is going to fetch and .xsd xml schema, and must return the HTML of a form based on the .xsd xml schema. Ideally I want to check the 'to' address to see if it is in a mysql database and if it is, have the email parsed and posted via CURL to a target destination as well as have attachments saved somewhere locally.   I have a Hudson job that just does a check-out/update to a third-party library. Call this Job A. Several other jobs depend on this library. Call them Jobs B and C. They use the stuff checked out by Job A, and need it to be up-to-date. My question is, how can I require Jobs B and C to always run Job A (to update the library) before they run through their build routine? If this is not possible, can someone recommend another way to achieve the same effect?

  My DLLs are loaded by a third-party application, which we can not customize. My assemblies have to be located in their own folder. I can not put them into GAC (my application has a requirement to be deployed using XCOPY). When the root DLL tries to load resource or type from another DLL (in the same folder), the loading fails (FileNotFound). Is it possible to add the folder where my DLLs are located to the assembly search path programmatically (from the root DLL)? I am not allowed to change the configuration files of the application.

  I have a C application with many worker threads. It is essential that these do not block so where the worker threads need to write to a file on disk, I have them write to a circular buffer in memory, and then have a dedicated thread for writing that buffer to disk. The worker threads do not block any more. The dedicated thread can safely block while writing to disk without affecting the worker threads (it does not hold a lock while writing to disk). My memory buffer is tuned to be sufficiently large that the writer thread can keep up. This all works great. My question is, how do I implement something similar for stdout? I could macro printf() to write into a memory buffer, but I don't have control over all the code that might write to stdout (some of it is in third-party libraries). Thoughts? NickB

• Maven install-file won't generate pom.xml

  I've installed some third party jars to my repository using the following command: mvn install:install-file -Dfile=/home/anotherCoder/Downloads/nifty-1.0.jar -DgroupId=nifty-gui -DartifactId=nifty-gui -Dversion=1.0 -Dpackaging=jar However, once I do mvn compile, maven complains that there is no pom file in the repository and attempts to download it, but can't cause it is not published at any remote repository. Here is the exact message from maven: Downloading: http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/nifty-gui/nifty-gui/1.0/nifty-gui-1.0.pom [INFO] Unable to find resource 'nifty-gui:nifty-gui:pom:1.0' in repository central (http://repo1.maven.org/maven2) So how do I get maven to generate a pom file for that jar and put it in my local repository?
