    Since yesterday my 12.04 web server refuses to connect to the Internet. Also when I boot I'm seeing the "waiting for network config" message. After logging in I'm getting an error about the packages. Error text: E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-updates_universe_i18n_Translation-en, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. This is a production web server so I really could use some help with enabling the network connection again.

  • Connecting 2 PCs using USB-to-USB (male-male) cable

Is there any Ubuntu equivalent to this? I would really love to SSH into my Ubuntu server via my Ubuntu laptop, just by connecting one end of the male USB to my laptop, and another end of the male USB to my server. I know I can always SSH into my server via the network, but then in this case of mine, there are cases the server is inside a secluded-secured network server room, and the only way for me to check things out is to go into the server room and open the keyboard console and monitor there. But, if I can just bring my laptop inside and connect to the USB there, then that would be cool. Any idea guys?

    Possible Duplicate: There's an issue with an Alpha/Beta Release of Ubuntu, what should I do? Because of a few problems i had with ubuntu, I hoped that they would solve themselve by upgrading my system to v12.10. Now they are solved, jeeehaaa, but now I have a new problem. My Network-manager tells me, that I'm connected, but I don't have an Internetconnection. And now I don't know what to do. Help please. By the way, I'm online with my netbook.

  • Internet connectivity issues

    I'm on 12.04, I upgraded a month ago from Windows 7 on my Sony VAIO. Everything is great except after the upgrade, I encountered Internet connectivity issues. When browsing the web or loading videos, my Internet will stop working in the middle and come back after a period of 30 seconds to 2 minutes or sometimes it just won't and I'll have to disconnect and re-connect to the network. I've noticed the issue when sending e-mails as well, they just won't send at all. It says sending request and the circle keeps spinning slowly until I get to a page where it says the page wouldn't load and gives me the reason DNS error. I tried setting OpenDNS as my DNS provider but that didn't help.

    I want to route my internet traffic over all my available connections (like LAN and Data card(3G)), based on conditions like, if a website is blocked over LAN, that traffic goes through Data Card (or other available internet connection). My ultimate motive is to integrate this feature in my web browser which I have already built using C# and .Net framework. I have found that one can add a route by using the following cmd command - route add DestinationIP mask subnet InterfaceGatewayIP but I am stuck as to how should it be implemented using C#?

    I want my projectors to Power On before the mall opens, and Power Off when the mall closes. So I created crontab entries (that I placed in /etc/cron.d/mall), but today (Thu Nov 22 18:58:29 EST 2012 is the current date on that server), the power-off.sh script got executed at 17:20 (see syslog excerpt below). Being Thu, Nov. 22, I would have expected the power-off.sh script to be executed at 21:20, per the 4th crontab line below. Why did power-off.sh execute at 17:20? What is wrong with my crontab entries?   • How to disable Power off/Power on sound on Android phone? [closed]

    My Android phone (Android v.2.1) produces loud sound both before Power off and after Power on (boot) is being completed. I don't want to turn the sound off before reboot/powering it off and to turn sound on after reboot every time I'm restarting my phone. I just want to get rid of these sounds forever :-) How can I do this (maybe executing some script, changing some properties... preferably without rooting my phone)? Update: Thank you Christopher Orr! I've also found some information that partially allows to achieve what I'm looking for (on androidforums.com): "if you are going into SettingsSound & displayNotification ringtone that sets your notification tone for app updates, power on (rebooting) etc. If you want to change notification for messages you would have to go into messaging and then hit the menu key for notification option. You can do the same for email accounts as well." So I disabled Power on/off sounds (plus something else... but I didn't notice undesired side effect yet...) with built-in settings.

  • Laptop Charger Not Recognised Properly on Samsung NP900X3F

    Firstly thanks for your time. Secondly, having an issue with my power charger on my Samsung Series 9 NP900X3F. When I boot into Ubuntu with the charger plugged in it recognises it as charging. When I unplug the charger after this it is still says it is charging. If I suspend in Ubuntu then plug/unplug during this suspended state it recognises it, but not during normal running. If I knew a little more I'm sure I could grab logs and find out what the difference between wake on suspend and normal running is, but alas I need help! I also am having issues with my keyboard backlight via the fn keys, but that I care about far less. Thank you very much.     I have written a shutdown script for transmission. Transmission calls the script after a torrent download finishes. I would like to do that but after all downloads are completed. I want to put a 2nd check ( right after monitor check) if it is still downloading another torrent. Is there any way to do this?

  • screen does not wake up after suspend/ brightness will not adjust

    My computer is one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230467 Asus Zenbook UX32A-DB51 Just bought it yesterday. Set to "suspend" when I close the lid, but when I open it up again I just get a black screen. Pressing the power button doesn't work, not does clicking the mouse or any key combination. The same is true if I leave the computer until it suspends. Black screen, no response, have to reboot. I also can't seem to adjust the brightness. I put "brightness up" and "brightness down" function keys in, and when I push them it shows the brightness level as going up and down on the meter, but the screen does not actually become more or less bright. I am totally new to all of this. Please tell me what additional information you need to help me and where I can find it. Thanks! Edit: Tried the following: sudo gedit /etc/default/grub Change the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" into GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux" sudo update-grub Restart your linux And "acpi_backlight=vendor" both to no avail.

  • Why does 12.04 try but fail to hibernate, even after I enabled hibernation?

    Regarding the below (-----) info from another post, my system will try (as is said below) to hibernate, but it won't get all the way there. Hard drive activity stops, but it does not shut down. If I turn the power off, then back on, it will start, but I have to "restore previous session" in the browser and other open apps don't restart, with the accompanying hassle. So because it tries, will the suggested fix then cause it to work correctly, or is the literal "try" not really what he means?!? PLEASE NOTE - this is a desktop system, not a laptop. Before enabling hibernation, please try to test whether it works correctly by running pm-hibernate in a terminal. The system will try to hibernate. If you are able to start the system again then you are more or less safe to add an override. To do so, start editing sudo nano /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla Fill it with this [Re-enable hibernate by default] Identity=unix-user:* Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate ResultActive=yes Save by pressing Ctrl-O and exit nano by pressing Ctrl-X Restart and hibernation is back!

  • Xfce power manager warns HAL daemon is not running, no keyboard on startup on Ubuntu

    I changed my grub boot options to add "vga=0x323" to them to resolve some issues with corrupted display during startup/shutdown on my laptop. The next time I booted the system up, I got a warning over the login screen saying Xfce Power Manager HAL Daemon not running The keyboard and mouse are unresponsive. After a minute or so, they start to work and the system functions as normal. How can I solve this?

  • Partition is gone after power failure

    Just had a power failure and am just going through my 4 usbdisks to remount them and found that 1 (the most important one) is coming back as 'doesn't contain a valid partition table'. What can I do to try to repair the disk and hopefully retrieve the partition? Lukily I do nightly backups. but would like to get what was there today if possible.

  • In Java, is there a way to obtain the command line parameters even if main() didn't save them?

    We have a program with a main() that parses certain CLPs but does not save them anywhere. I then have my own plug-in code that needs access to the original CLPs (so I can transmit more parameters) for it. However, I cannot change main() I saw that there is apparently a way to do this in C#, I'm looking for an equivalent Java solution on Linux. UPDATE: Obviously, I'm aware of how main() works. Unfortunately, I cannot change the existing application or the way it is invoked (except for CLPs). I can only access via a sandboxed plugin code. My question is whether there is a way to get the command line (rather then the environment variables with -D) that the JVM was invoked with.

    Hi, After writing deployment scripts from within the ISE, we need our CI server to be able to run them automatically, i.e. from the command line or via a batch file. I have notice some significant differences between the following calls: powershell.exe -File Script.ps1 powershell.exe -Command "& '.\Script.ps1'" powershell.exe .\Script.ps1 Some simple examples: When using -File, errors are handled in the exact same way as the ISE. The other two calls seem to ignore the $ErrorActionPreference variable, and do not catch Write-Error in try/catch blocks. When using pSake: The last 2 calls work perfectly Using the ISE or the -File parameter will fail with the following error: The variable '$script:context' cannot be retrieved because it has not been set Could someone help me understand the implications of each syntax, and why they are behaving differently? I would ideally like to find a syntax that works all the time and behaves like the ISE. Thanks, Romain

    A question on basics : While tuning environment variables for a program launched from a script, I ended up with somewhat strange behaviour with sh (which seems to be actually linked to bash) : variable setting seems to mess up with command-line parameters. Could somebody explain why does this happen? A simple script: #! /bin/sh # Messes with $1 ?? set ANT_OPTS=-Xmx512M export ANT_OPTS # Works # export ANT_OPTS=-Xmx512M echo "0 = $0" echo "1 = $1" When I run this with the upper alternative (set + export), the result is as following: $ ./test.sh foo 0 = ./test.sh 1 = ANT_OPTS=-Xmx512M But with lower alternative (export straight), the result is as I supposed: $ ./test.sh foo 0 = ./test.sh 1 = foo There is surely logical explanation, I just haven't figured it out yet.     I've edited a pps file which was made with the 2003 version and saved also as compatible with Power Point 97-2003 but a friend a mine can't see the last version of the file. The original file can be seen by my computer friend. What can I do to make the new version of the pps file to be viewable on the computer of my friend? Any tips? Where/what else do I have to check/do ?
