• Business Objects Web Intelligence-style reporting in a Winform app. Is this possible?

  I have a WinForm app that displays results in a Gridview control. If a user right mouse clicks on a row, he can then, from a popup menu, select a command to perform on the row much like windows File Explorer. But now I want to be able to give the user the ability to construct a filter so that he can control which rows are displayed in the grid w/o effecting the functionality of the application. I would also like the user to be able to select the columns/fields that he sees in the grid. For the basis of this question, let's assume that the data displayed in grid comes from a single table. business Objects' Web Intelligence and Desktop Intelligence applications give me very flexible and powerful reporting capabilities, but I want to integrate this capability into my WinForm application. Does Business Objects, or maybe Crystal Reports provide this sort of functionality? I can construct my own query builder but I'd rather not reinvent sliced bread.

• How to use or get working: Reporting services report viewer component in VS.NET

  I am trying to write a simple web app (C# or VB.NET) to display a set of reports/subreports, but I can't seem to get access to the ReportViewer control. I am using VS.NET express (2005 and 2010) and I know I need the reportviewer pluglin. but I have installed it but I can't seem to get it to appear in the toolbox. I have tried to add a reference but VS does not like the DLL :P Please guide me through a walk through! Thanks. M

• IE7 not digesting JSON: "parse error"

  While trying to GET a JSON, my callback function is NOT firing. $.ajax({ type:"GET", dataType:'json', url: myLocalURL, data: myData, success: function(returned_data){alert('success');} }); The strangest part of this is that my JSON(s) validates on JSONlint this ONLY fails on IE7...it works in Safari, Chrome, and all versions of Firefox. If I use 'error', then it reports "parseError"...even though it validates! Is there anything that I'm missing? Does IE7 not process certain characters, data structures (my data doesn't have anything non-alphanumeric, but it DOES have nested JSONs)? I have used tons of other AJAX calls that all work (even in IE7), but with the exception of THIS call. An example data return here is: {"question":{ "question_id":"19", "question_text":"testing", "other_crap":"none" }, "timestamp":{ "response":"answer", "response_text":"the text here" } } I am completely at a loss. Hopefully someone has some insight into what's going on...thank you!

• jquery $(window).width() and $(window).height() return different values when viewport has not been r

  I am writing a site using jquery that repeatedly repeatedly calls $(window).width() and $(window).height() to position and size elements based on the viewport size... In troubleshooting I discovered that I am getting slightly different viewport size reports in repeated calls to the above jquery functions when the viewport is not resized... Wondering if there is any special case anyone knows of when this happens, or if this is just the way it is. The difference in sizes reported are 20px or less, it appears. It happens in Safari 4.0.4, Firefox 3.6.2 and Chrome 5.0.342.7 beta on Mac OS X 10.6.2... I didn't test other browsers yet because it doesn't appear to be specific to the browser. I was also unable to figure out what the difference depends upon - if it isn't the viewport size, could there be another factor that makes the results differ? Any insight would be appreciated... • Is Microsoft's Ribbon UI really that great, from a usability perspective?

  The first time I ever used it was at my current job. Among my coworkers, the feelings toward it for usability are mixed. The other developer doesn't really care one way or the other, as long as Office does everything he needs it to do when writing reports. The top manager likes it because it feels natural, and I feel the same way. But another coworker finds in klunky and hard to use (although she admits that she only uses it at home as her machine hasn't been upgraded yet, and that might change if she uses it more often at work). So - is the Ribbon UI really that innovative? What qualities about it make it a good or bad user interface mechanism? Possibly related: Adoption of the Ribbon UI

  Hi everyone, We're working with a new codeigniter based application that are cross referencing different PHP functions forwards and backwards from various libraries, models and such. We're running PHP5 on the server and we try to find a good way for managing errors and status reports that arises from the usage of our functions. While using return in functions, the execution is ended, so nothing more can be sent back. Right? What's the best practice to send a status information or error code upon ending execution of actual function?   Can anyone advise if it is a good idea to have HBase as primary data source for web-based application? My primary concern is HBase's response time to queries. Is it possible to have sub-second response? edit: more details about the app itself. Amount of data: ~500GB of text data, expect to reach 1TB soon Number of concurrent users using the app: up to 50 The app will be used to present reports about data stored in HBase, like how many times keyword "X" occured in last 24h.   My Application (Vb.net, Access 2003/2007) is to scan Access Database files for activex controls and to generate report accordingly. Problem: Getting an error like: "Insufficient memory to continue the execution of the program." The above error occurs while scanning for older version of Access files like prior to office 2000. And the line of code where I get this is as follows: Dim oForm As Access.Form Dim oAccess as Access.Application oForm = oAccess.Forms(objForms.Name) But it opens the file and form as well. Need Help: Whether it is possible to read the file (Access Forms and Reports) or not? Please provide me reference or any solution.

• Discovering maximum packet size

  I'm working on a network-related project and I am using DTLS (TLS/UDP) to secure communications. Reading the specifications for DTLS, I've noted that DTLS requires the DF flag (Don't Fragment) to be set. On my local network if I try to send a message bigger than 1500 bytes, nothing is sent. That makes perfect sense. On Windows the sendto() reports a success but nothing is sent. I obviously cannot unset the DF flag manually since it is mandatory for DTLS and i'm not sure whether the 1500 bytes limit (MTU ?) could change in some situations. I guess it can. So, my question is : "Is there a way to discover this limit ?" If not, what would be the lowest possible value ? My software runs under UNIX (Linux/MAC OSX) and Windows OSes so different solutions for each OS are welcome ;) Many thanks.

I have been trying to find IDEs that support JIRA/Bugzilla so that I could simply integrate the IDE with SourceForge. I do not like to refresh my browser to see issues, bug reports, security problems, etc. I would like to send issues, resolve issues, right from the IDE. I am currently developing with NetBeans, but I see no ways of integrating into any of the services provided by SourceForge. Am I missing something?

  on larger projects i use a simple bug tracking system that's designed to be used by clients i have a lot of trouble convincing clients to use it (they send bug reports via email) does anyone have any strategies they can suggested? also, i have been playing around with a theory as to why this is the case; it goes like this: asking a client to log a bug is like taking your car to a mechanic for a service, and the mechanic hands you the engine oil and says "here, pop that in". basically, the client has paid you to do the work, logging a bug sounds too much like work, so they want you to do it thoughts?

• Understanding Plesk Watchdog statistics

  We have Plesk 8.3 installed. I've started using their Watchdog module to track server useage. Our server routinely has trouble with the amount of traffic we have and I think our MySQL queries need to be smarter. Anyway, looking at the stats from Watchdog, it seems like MySQL usage is low compared to so something else making up the "overall" usage. See this: I was hoping someone with a lot of Plesk exeprience could help me understand what I'm seeing here. Can I not trust Watchdog's reports or am I missing something?

• Can I prevent a user from using windows taskmanager to end a process?

  I have a c# 4.0 application that I hear grumblings and rumors about problems with. Now, this application has a global unhandled exception handler that reports back to me with errors. I also know that it works because SOME people fill it in, and submit it. It seems though; that a large number of people do NOT fill it in, but instead, use the Windows Taskmanager to end the process. Is it possible to prevent a user from using the Windows Taskmanager to end a specific process? My goal would be that if the application crashes, the form that the user is presented with prevents the process from being ended. I'll also accept steps that would prevent the Windows Taskmanager from being launched.

  I'm transferring fragments of HTML via Ajax. Safari (4.0.5) reports: "Resource interpreted as other but transferred with MIME type text/html." The file name of the file I get has a .html extension. The server does set the header for this: Content-Type:text/html As I said, the content is a fragment of HTML, which is injected into the page (with jQuery). The contents of the file look like: <html> ... some valid html ... </html> What else might Safari need to see to make it interpret the received content as HTML? TIA.

• How do I set a SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services Template to a Default Font?

  I'm creating a new template to create reports from at a later date. I know how to create one, and I know where to save it. However, the problem is this. Everything that is created on the report uses the default font of Arial with a size of 10pt. I need to set mine to default to Tahoma 11pt. I can create a mock title, mock tables, etc and save those to Tahoma 11pt, but any new controls that are used on any version of this report will default back to Arial 10pt. How do I fix this?

• How to estimate memory need by XPathDocument for a specific xml file

  Is there any way to estimate the memory requirement for creating an XpathDocument instance based on the file size of the xml? XpathDocument xdoc = new XpathDocument(xmlfile); Is there any way to programmatically stop the process of creating the XpathDocument if memory drops to a very low level? Since it loads the entire xml into memory, it would be nice to know ahead of time if the xml is too big. What I have found is that when I create a new XpathDocument with a big xml file, an outofmemory exception is never fired, but that the process slows to a crawl, only 5 Mb of memory remains a available and the Task Manager reports it is not responding. This happened with a 266 Mb xml file when there was 584 Mb of ram. I was able to load a 150 Mb file with no problems in 18. After loading the xml, I want to do xpath queries using an XpathNavigator and an XpathNodeIterator. I am using .net 2.0, xp sp3.

• Running GUI application in the Windows service mode

  I'm writing a server running as a Windows service that by request invokes Firefox to generate a pdf snapshot of a webpage. I know it is a bad idea to run a GUI program in service mode, but the server nature of my program restricts from running it in the user mode. Running a user-level 'proxy' also is not an option, since there might be no interactive user logged-in on the machine with the server running. In my experiments Firefox successfully produced pdf when the service was running under a user account that was already logged-in. Obviously it didn't work in other cases: for Local System and user accounts that weren't logged-in. Under LocalSystem with 'Allow service to interact with desktop' option enabled I could see the Firefox started that reports that it's unable to find a printer. Since it wouldn't be practical to require an opened user session for the pdf server to run, is there any workaround for this except running the whole thing from a virtual machine?

Some of the features i'm looking to implement are: Single or multiple selection of objects Alignment of objects (when several are selected) Same-sizing of objects (when several are selected) Moving/dragging of selected object(s) Selected object resizing in eight directions (using object grips) For features and look-and-feel I've analyzed and used a mixture of ideas from: MS Visual Studio 200x (most useful so far) Visio Crystal Reports My question is: Have I overlooked some other IDEs that provide these kinds of features that are better and user-friendlier examples of what to do than others i've looked at? (They don't have to be Microsoft products. That's just what i have ready access to.)

• Ruby TCPSocket doesn't notice it when server is killed

  I've this ruby code that connects to a TCP server (namely, netcat). It loops 20 times, and sends "ABCD ". If I kill netcat, it takes TWO iterations of the loop for an exception to be triggered. On the first loop after netcat is killed, no exception is triggered, and "send" reports that 5 bytes have been correctly written... Which in the end is not true, since of course the server never received them. Is there a way to work around this issue ? • Server side alerts for client side app

  Here's the scenario: User interacts with Adobe flex webpage to configure reports based on some data stored server side. They configure their view and have THAT view emailed to them daily. I've got the report builder, the part I'm trying to figure out is how to render the report server side and send it out as email (native flex functionality? convert to html? take screenshot? assume something is running client side?...) • TFS no release folder in build folder

  I have a tfs build that works fine on the client, but when executed on the server, no actual binaries get created. When I go to the folder: \[MyServer]\builds[BuildName], I see BuildLog.txt ErrorsWarningsLog.txt Release.txt I expect to see a big \Release folder full of my dlls, but I get nothing. The error log reports no problems up until we ask the build to copy the binaries to our staging server. If I comment those out, I get no errors. CustomizableOutDir is true, DropLocation is set to something sensible BuildDirectoryPath is set to something sensible But no matter what, I just don't get any dlls built. Our local TFS guy is baffled too. Any suggestions?

• Antialiased fonts in emacs 23.2 on Windows

  I'm having trouble getting antialiased fonts to work correct in emacs 23.2, to the extent that it appears that it doesn't actually support antialised fonts. If I do the following in emacs 23.1: (set-face-font 'default "DejaVu Sans Mono-9.0:antialias=subpixel") (describe-font nil) Then this reports the full name as "DejaVu Sans Mono-9.0:antialias=subpixel", and the font looks nice and smooth. However, doing the same thing in emacs 23.2 gives the full name as "DejaVu Sans Mono-9.0" and the font looks nasty and chunky. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

  Where I work, my role has been evolving from a pure development role to team leadership. I find that this suits me, and I'm generally enjoying it. One aspect of the job that continually vexes me, though, is time management. My day used to be pure coding. Now, I still have a largely full plate of coding duties, but I'm expected to mentor other developers, work on requirements, make design decisions for other developers, evaluate bug reports from users, assign them to developers, and so on. I find that my day has become on interruption after another and the prolonged periods of sustained concentration needed to get any actual quality coding done are becoming rarer and rarer. Today, I finally grabbed my laptop and escaped to a coffee shop so I could get some actual work done. How do the team leads here manage their day -- or manage their workplace -- so they don't let their administrative tasks overwhelm them?
