  • First site going live real soon. Last minute questions

    I am really close to finishing up on a project that I've been working on. I have done websites before, but never on my own and never a site that involved user generated data. I have been reading up on things that should be considered before you go live and I have some questions. 1) Staging... (Deploying updates without affecting users). I'm not really sure what this would entail, since I'm sure that any type of update would affect users in some way. Does this mean some type of temporary downtime for every update? can somebody please explain this and a solution to this as well. 2) Limits... I'm using the Kohana framework and I'm using the Auth module for logging users in. I was wondering if this already has some type of limit (on login attempts) built in, and if not, what would be the best way to implement this. (save attempts in database, cookie, etc.). If this is not whats meant by limits, can somebody elaborate. 3) Caching... Like I said, this is my first site built around user content. Considering that, should I cache it? 4) Back Ups... How often should I backup my (MySQL) database, and how should I back it up (MySQL export?). The site is currently up, yet not finished, if anybody wants to look at it and see if something pops out to you that should be looked at/fixed. Clashing Thoughts.   • Java variables -> replace? RAM optimization

    Hi guys, I just wanted to know what happens behind my program when I declare and initialize a variable and later initialize it again with other values, e.g. an ArrayList or something similar. What happens in my RAM, when I say e.g. this: ArrayList<String> al = new ArrayList<String>(); ...add values, work with it and so on.... al = new ArrayList<String>(); So is my first ArrayList held in RAM or will the second ArrayList be stored on the same position where the first one has been before? Or will it just change the reference of "al"? If it is not replaced...is there a way to manually free the RAM which was occupied by the first arraylist? (without waiting for the garbage collector) Would it help to set it first =null? Nice greetings, poeschlorn

    We are a software development company. We need to establish a monetary escrow for one of our clients. The idea is they pay for the whole fixed bid project up front. However, the money is not released to us until agreed upon milestones have been met. This is very similar to the system Elance uses.   • What programming language is this?

    I recently stumbled over a very odd source listing on a rather old programming-related site (lost it somewhere in my browser history as I didn't care about it at first). I think that this is part of a simple (console-based?) snake game. I searched and searched but didn't find a language that looked somwhat like this. This seems like a mix of Python, Ruby and C++. What the hell? What programming-language is the below source listing written in?   • What features of interpreted languages can a compiled one not have?

    Interpreted languages are usually more high-level and therefore have features as dynamic typing (including creating new variables dynamically without declaration), the infamous eval and many many other features that make a programmer's life easier - but why can't compiled languages have these as well? I don't mean languages like Java that run on a VM, but those that compile to binary like C(++). I'm not going to make a list now but if you are going to ask which features I mean, please look into what PHP, Python, Ruby etc. have to offer. Which common features of interpreted languages can't/don't/do exist in compiled languages? Why?

What is the community's opinion on whether or not a section of code can be adequate with respect to decision coverage (all possible decisions have evaluated to true and false) but not block coverage, and if a section of code can be adequate with respect to condition coverage (each simple condition in a compound conditions has evaluated to true and false) but not block coverage.   • What are the common compliance standards for software products?

    This is a very generic question about software products. I would like to know what compliance standards are applicable to any software product. I know that question gives away nothing. So, here is an example to what I am referring to. CiSecurity Security Certification/Compliance lists out products ceritified by them to be compliant to the standards published at their website, i.e, cisecurity.org. Compliance could be as simple as answering a questionnaire for your product and approved by a thirdparty like cisecurity or it could apply to your whole organization, for instance, PCI-DSS compliance. I would be very interested in knowing the standards that products you know/designed/created, comply to. To give you the context behind this question: I am the developer of a data-masking tool. The said tool helps mask onscreen html text in a banking web application using filters. So, for instance, if the bank application lists out user information with ssn, my product when integrated with the banking product, automatically identifies ssn pattern and masks it into a pre-defined format.So, I have my product marketing team wanting more buzz words like compliance to be able to sell it to more banking clients. Hence, understanding "compliances that apply to products" is a key research item for me at this point. By which I meant, security compliances. Appreciate all your help and suggestions.

    Hi , i am doing one small application , wheich have login functionality, in the user table am maintaining the AVAILABLE status for the logged USER, example : i have three user called foo1,foo2,foo3 , When foo1 logged then his AVAILABLE STATUS WILL UPDATE AS 1 IN THE USERTABLE, if he logged out then his AVAILABLE STATUS goes to 0, like the foo2, and foo3 , for this available status flasg , amsimply using the update operation ..no other big functionality , Now What i want is, If somthing happened when user logged in , then i want to make the available status as 0, Somthing means , I WANT TO CHANGE THE AVAILABLE STATUS TO 0 , WHEN system CRASH OR browser crash Thanks Bharanikumar

    Hi, I have an EXE and DLL running in different process. From DLL I have to send large of amount of data to EXE, which would vary from 50 chars to 2000 chars and more(The data is recordid of records saved in DB). I thought about two options to do that: 1. Using SendMessage- In which data's will be sent in batch. 2. Use an Intermediate file to transfer data. Can anyone list out the pros and cons of methods.     Hi..:) For documentation and presentation purposes, we often find professionals/students creating SRS, coding guidelines etc. for these things there is some kind of a checklist which one could use to appropriately match what could relate to a specific case and accordingly one does a documentation for each. On those grounds could you please give me some sort of a checklist( any points/guidelines) one could use for going about Implementation( in the form of Implementation Details) in Python and C++ . Although this might sound specific as the query is "Implementation Details" and is different for different cases as one goes about the REAL implementation, I just want a SET of guidelines one should follow ( Preferably In Python, C++ specific, even for any other language is Welcome) if this( Implementation Details ) has to also be documented or presented.     We have an existing java desktop application which starts, when user click on our application icon (placed on desktop) OR double click on executable(.exe). It opens the frame which allows user to select the file from native file system and uploads it to the server. Now we would like to facilitate user, that he can pick a file from windows explorer and drag it to the "shortcut / Application icon" & drop it on the "shortcut / Application icon" on the desktop. This would start the uploading of that file on the server. we need to capture the action of "drop" and launch on shortcut.. which may be completely not related to java, it can be very generic to any application. We are using JSmooth to build an executable from jar and NSIS for installer purpose. I would like to know.. How we can launch the application if user drops local file onto the system icon ? How we get the absolute path of file name which has been dropped onto the executable ?

  • How can I cluster short messages [Tweets] based on topic ? [Topic Based Clustering]

    Hello, I am planning an application which will make clusters of short messages/tweets based on topics. The number of topics will be limited like Sports [ NBA, NFL, Cricket, Soccer ], Entertainment [ movies, music ] and so on... I can think of two approaches to this Ask for users to tag questions like Stackoverflow does. Users can select tags from a predefined list of tags. Then on server side I will cluster them on based of tags. Pros:- Simple design. Less complexity in code. Cons:- Choices for users will be restricted. Clusters will not be dynamic. If a new event occurs, the predefined tags will miss it. Take the message, delete the stopwords [ predefined in a dictionary ] and apply some clustering algorithm to make a cluster and depending on its popularity, display the cluster. The cluster will be maintained according to its sustained popularity. New messages will be skimmed and assigned to corresponding clusters. Pros:- Dynamic clustering based on the popularity of the event/accident. Cons:- Increased complexity. More server resources required. I would like to know whether there are any other approaches to this problem. Or are there any ways of improving the above mentioned methods? Also suggest some good clustering algorithms.I think "K-Nearest Clustering" algorithm is apt for this situation.

    during debug mode or while i am doing testing, i need to print lost of various information, so i use this method ifdef TESTING // code with lots of debugging info else // clean code only endif // TESTING` Is this the good method, or is there any other simple and elegant method. But this way, I am repating the same code in two places and if anything is to be changed later on in the code, I have to do it in both places, which is time consuming and error prone. Thanks. I am using MS Visual Studio.
