• Upgrade AirPort on Macs to support Snow Leopard's Wake on Wireless/WLAN?

  Snow Leopard now supports Wake on WLAN, but not all hardware supports this. For example, my Octo Mac Pro from early 2008 has an AirPort card, but it does not support this. Nor does my 2007 2.33GHz MacBook Pro. For reference to what is needed, look at http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/28/a-closer-look-at-snow-leopards-wake-on-demand-feature/ which includes a screenshot of what the System Profiler should show. It's pretty hard to find Apple parts, but is it possible to put newer cards into these machines to have them support Wake on Wireless?

• Can't connect to Apple Time Capsule in home network using Home Plugs from Win 7 Machine

  I have the following home network setup with subnet 255.255.255.0 but recently moved my time capsule to a different location when I added a third Home Plug and can no longer ping or map a network drive to it from the Windows 7 Machine. However using Airport Utility on the Windows 7 machine I can manually configure the Time Capsule. Using a Macbook on WIFI Network 1 or 2 - I can backup to the time capsule, so its accessible via both the router wifi network and the time capsule wifi network. The Time Capsule is set to BRIDGE function - ie no NAT or DHCP server enabled. Any bright sparks out there that can help diagnose the problem? Do they affect the performance of CPU or system? Do they result in increased deviation of performance numbers? (i.e. Do they prevent me from getting reliable performance numbers?) If so, how do I avoid these messages and increasing counters? Would running the performance tests on a well-cooled desktop system help?

• MySQL Memory usage

  Our MySQL server seems to be using a lot of memory. I've tried looking for slow queries and queries with no index and have halved the peak CPU usage and Apache memory usage but the MySQL memory stays constantly at 2.2GB (~51% of available memory on the server). Here's the graph from Plesk. Running top in the SSH window shows the same figures. Does anyone have any ideas on why the memory usage is constant like this and not peaks and troughs with usage of the app?   I have been investigating the possibility of using my PC to control my soon to arrive Mac Mini when on the move. I can't afford and hope you don't give me answers suggesting buying a MacBook. My Mac Mini is the high end type. Now I have seen that the only viable option seems to be VNC. But how does this work if I am not on a network? Does VNC work with an ad-hoc network? Can a PC be connected to a Mac on such a network? Can this network be configured once at home and then be available on startup on the move? If I have an iPhone, can I use it as my wifi? But then, how would I start the Mac Mini to make the connection, since it wouldn't have a screen on the move? Finally, are there any small portable screens one can carry in a bag?

• bash process uses 90% CPU, comes back on computer restart

  I’ve replaced the old HDD of my late 2008 unibody MacBook (8 GB of RAM, running OS X 10.7.4) with an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD. After doing this, I've installed Lion and restored my data from a Time Machine backup. Everything is fine, except for a process named “bash” that permanently uses about 90 % CPU. If I kill it via Activity Monitor, everything goes back to normal, but unfortunately the process comes back every time I restart the computer. I've tried do zap the PRAM, reinstall 10.7.4 from the combo package, and even simply wait for more than 2 hours, but the problem is still here.

• Using the Drop Box folder while sharing on Mac OS X, files are locked.

  While using the Drop Box in the Shared folder on two MacBook Pros running Mac OS X 10.6, I noticed that when files were dropped into the drop box they were read only (locked?) when going from one of the laptops to the other (but not necessarily the other direction). Is there a way to change this? My girlfriend nearly had an aneurism because she couldn't rename a file. I duplicated it and deleted the original, but this seems unnecessary. • Cannot find the "Create Network" menuitem in the WiFi icon menu in Mountain Lion

  I am using Mountain Lion Developer Preview 2. I cannot find the "Create Network" menuitem in the WiFi icon menu in the menubar. It was there before when I was using Lion. It started missing since I upgraded to Mountain Lion Developer Preview 1. By the way, is there any other method to create an ad-hoc WiFi network on OS X? I tried to use Internet Sharing via WiFi, but other devices using the shared connection could not find the Mac in their local networks. I am using an early 2011 MacBook Pro 15'. Thanks.

• How do I open a 60M png image on OSX

  Alright, so I've been looking around on this site on how to open a big PNG image. The question I found was about a 10M png. Xee apparently did the job. So, I downloaded Xee for my 60M file, but it crashes. So does iPhoto, Pixelmator and previewer. In the Pixelmator and Xee case, I actually had to kill the computer, and restart it. It crashed so 'hard' I couldn't get it to respond again. How do I open this file? (and zoom it) Specs: newly acquired macbook pro: 4gb memory, 2.3ghz i7 58M png image approx: 15000x30000 pixels

• Can a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable support resolutions above 1920x1200?

  Is it theoretically possible for a cheapo Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable or adapter to support resolutions above 1920 × 1200, e.g. 2560 × 1440 (QHD)? Or is it always electrically-equivalent to a single-link DVI, and such resolutions above 1920×1200 are out of the question? From empirical evidence, I've tried out some rather expensive brand-name adapter from a local Apple dealer that was marked as HDMI 1.3 compliant with my mid-2013 MacBook Air (5000) and also with X230 (4000), and a QHD monitor, but was only getting a maximum of FHD resulution through such an arrangement.

• Time Capsule Refuses to Connect After Interrupted File Transfer

  I have a first generation Apple Time Capsule set up as a NAS on my network. I use the built-in hard drive for Time Machine backups, with a 1.5 TB external HDD attached to the Time Capsule over USB. Whenever I cancel a file transfer from the external drive to my Macbook (or quit a video I had been streaming from it, as was the most recent incident), I can no longer connect to the Time Capsule or the attached drive, and I have to unplug it to get it working again. How can I fix this? Is it a network error? Could the Time Capsule be at fault or could it be my computer?

  I am on my way to Europe for 20 days with the wife and teenage kids. Among us, we have 3 iPhones, 1 Blackberry, 2 iPad 3G and 2 Macbook Pro laptops. Each has Skype. I am very concerned about AT&T data charges, and I am looking for a sensible alternative. For example, the AT&T data plans for the phones and iPads are $200 EACH for 200 MB per device. That is $1,200 and does not even cover the laptops. Ouch!!! I am thinking about a prepaid data plan from a European cell system of some sort combined with a GSM data modem and a Cradlepoint router, such as the CTR500. So, questions: 1) Anyone know of a GSM data source in Europe where I can buy a GSM Modem compatible with the CTR500 at a reasonable prepaid rate? 2) Experience with the CTR500?

Invalid volume file count (It should be ... instead of ...) ** Repairing Volume Missing directory record (id = ...) I'd like to know what is the cause of the above errors? • How to convert laptop drive for use as VMware image?

  I have a windows laptop that recently died (dead motherboard). It being a 7 year old laptop, I decided to give Apple a try this time around and try to use VMware to access my old data if necessary. In order to do this, I need to convert the physical drive to a VMware image. Googling around, it looks like I might be able to use VMware Convertor to do this. My original intent was to plug the laptop drive into a windows desktop via an external USB enclosure and create the image that way. However, upon further investigation, it looks like VMware Converter only supports converting a local machine (the desktop) or a remote machine (via IP) but not a laptop drive plugged into the local machine. So with that in mind, I'm looking for suggestions and help on how to convert this laptop drive into something I can use on my new Macbook Pro.

• After installing Windows Phone 8 SDK, Connectify doesn't work

  Today I installed Windows Phone 8 SDK from the official site. After installing and a couple of restarts (it restarted the PC to enable Hyper-V), I opened Connectify. I use Connectify Hotspot to connect my iPod to the internet as I have an ethernet connection and no wireless router. The problem is that now, Connectify doesn't show WiFi in Share Over. The attached screenshot shows this. Previously, before I installed the SDK, it would show Ethernet and Wi-Fi. I would select WiFi and share my internet. Now, this is completely screwed. EDIT: I found out that the Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport Driver has got disabled and I am not able to enable it again. Please advise. • Trouble upgrading OS X, because HD doesn't use GUID Partition Table Scheme

  So I have a MacBook with Mac OS X 10.5 and I'm trying to upgrade to 10.6, but when I run the upgrade 'install' I quickly get to a page where I am supposed to 'Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X' and there is only the one hard drive, so it is auto selected, and below that I see a warning message and the only button available is the 'Go Back' button. The warning message says: "Macintosh HD" can't be used because it doesn't use the GUID Partition Table scheme. Use Disk Utility to change the partition scheme. Select the disk, choose the Partition tab, select the Volume Scheme and then click Options. So I followed the above instructions, and I got to the last step, where I'm supposed to click the 'Options' button, the problem is that I cannot click that button, it is disabled.. So what am I supposed to do?

• Weird graphical artefacts on OS X Snow Leopard.

  Since a couple of days I experience some strange graphical artefacts on Snow Leopard. Usually after a certain uptime, the background image would show some strange colours at some place. This could be reverted by reloading the background image. But the problem would appear again after rebooting (and waiting for an indefinite time). Sometimes, the shadow of windows would also have some artefacts; and this time the application switcher is completely distorted. Any ideas where I need to search for a solution of the problem? Edit: Model: MacBook Gen. 3.1 / all updates installed Update: After not having used Safari for a while, the problem has not occurred anymore (at least not after 20 days of uptime). Could well be that the problem had its origin in Safari or a Safari-related plugin. (Possibly Flash or Click-to-Flash as it did not happen with both deactivated, though the running time with this configuration might have been to short to be of any validity.)

• What is the keyboard shortcut to clear formatting on Office 2008 Mac?

  I recently switched from a PC to a brand new Macbook Pro. I was happy to see that most of the keyboard shortcuts in Word 2008 where the same or almost the same than in Word 2007. However, there is one keyboard shortcut that I dearly miss : the clear formatting shortcut (ctrl + space on Windows). I know the feature exists since it's in the formatting bar, but I can't find the keyboard shorcut. I tried cmd + space but that is the system keyboard shortcut to switch the keyboard type. alt + space delete the text without deleting the formatting. ctrl + space doesn't seem to do anything. Does anyone know what the keyboard shortcut for the clear formatting command may be? I hope there's one because it's really painful to reach for the mouse everytime I put a title and I want to switch to a normal paragraph style...

• My Mac is slow but don't know what's slowing it down

  My Mac (Macbook Pro) is sometimes slow doing basic tasks, like browsing the web or something like that. If I open Activity Monitor, I have (maybe) one program that is about 10 % CPU, others are below 1 %. My CPU usage is not full. I still have more than 2 GB of free memory (out of 5 GB). There is no heavy I/O activity like copying files. My open programs are Google Chrome (6 tabs, none of which are in some way (flash, many DOM objects, Javascript) have IMO, except maybe Gmail), Activity Monitor, Finder, Sublime Text 2 (text editor) and iTerm (terminal). What is causing the slowdown? "Slow" being: taking time to write these characters (I press the keyboard keys but there is a delay before I see them on the screen), changing tabs or programs, etc.

  I am interested in buying a sony vaio z series laptop. But I found out that it was already released in january 2010 and doesnt have quad core cpus available. I guess there is a product update due in 2011? Has anyone knowledge of how the product cycles are with sony laptops? E. g. I know that apple updates its macbook pro series somewhat every 9 - 12 months. Is this around the same with sony? I am also wondering if the ssd drives sony uses are any good, but that could be another question...

• On a Mac, how can I find all files on a NTFS partition that have the same name, given case *in*sensi

  Here's the deal, I have a huge mess of files on an external drive that is formatted as NTFS. I wish to copy all of these files onto my MacBook Pro. NTFS, like sane filesystems, is case sensitive. HFS is not. There is, somewhere in the mess of tens of thousands of files and directories, one or more 'duplicates' in the eyes of HFS. Theses are preventing me from copying the entire directory of data onto my mac. (MacOSX rather unhelpfully throws a general error explaining the problem, but not the exact file. It also doesn't give you an option to skip) What is the best approach to solve this? Does anyone know a tool that can find files and directories that have the same case-insensitive name?

• Using ADSL Modem/WiFi Router to share existing network wirelessly

  At my uni we have a wired Ethernet connection in our dorms. However, I want to share this connection with my macbook using wifi (so I don't have to be constantly tethered). I am looking at using my DSL G064T ADSL modem/WiFi router as a wifi repeater for the uni network. Is this possible? How would I go about doing this? I understand that it would be possible using a normal Wifi router (seeing as it has an ethernet 'in' port where it would get the external connection from.), so is it just not possible using the router I have? If i need to buy another one, which one would you recommend?
