• How to use all the cores in Windows 7?

  I am not sure if this belongs to Stackoverflow or Superuser but I thought I would ask here. I have a console based application written in C which currently takes about an hour to terminate in Windows 7 64-bit OS. The task manager reports that the application is using only 25% of the available CPU. I would like to reduce the run time by increasing cpu usage. Is there any way to let the application use all four cores (the laptop has Core i5) instead of just one? I am assuming that task manager reports 25% because only one core is allocated to the program.

• Changing dalvik/libcore causes rebuilding the whole framework

  I'm adding some interception routines to Dalvik libcore methods (e.g. file open method in libcore/luni/src/main/java/org/apache/harmony/luni/platform/OSFileSystem.java), which I think only changes basic sharing libraries. But to my surprise, every time I run make after modifications, it rebuilds nearly everything of the framework, such as Calculator application, W3C DOM parser, etc. It really takes time to build the framework after a small modification. I'm wondering if it is possible to reduce number of rebuilt components after modifying dalvik libcore? Thanks.

  I am new to the distributed NoSQL databases like Hadoop, Cassandra, etc. I have few questions for which I seek an expert advice: Can you list problems/challenges one will generally face when making a shift from the present conventional database like MySQL to these large cluster-based databases? What are the difficulties, if any, when one needs to adapt to a newer version of these open source projects? Can you list out the things which are generally stored/kept in memcached for fast rendering of the page? How can I understand the source code of open-source projects so that I can build on it and maybe give back to the community? Above questions may sound to be idiotic and basic but please it's a request for the experts to answer the above questions in detailed and to best of their abilities.

• How can I print N array elements with delimiters per line?

  I have an array in Perl I want to print with space delimiters between each element, except every 10th element which should be newline delimited. There aren't any spaces in the elements if that matters. I've written a function to do it with for and a counter, but I wondered if there's a better/shorter/canonical Perl way, perhaps a special join syntax or similar.   Is it possible to provide the following type of fuctionality with informix client tools? As the user types the first two characters of a name, the drop-down list is empty. At the third character, the list fills with just the names beginning with those three characters. At the fourth character, MS-Access completes the first matching name (assuming the combo's AutoExpand is on). Once enough characters are typed to identify the customer, the user tabs to the next field. The time taken to load the combo between keystrokes is minimal. This occurs once only for each entry, unless the user backspaces through the first three characters again. If your list still contains too many records, you can reduce them by another order of magnitude by changing the value of constant conSuburbMin from 3 to 4.

• How do I stop intellij from adding specific jars to the classpath when debugging?

  When I debug an application in intellij, it insists on including all the jars in side my jre/lib folder and sub folders. Unfortunately, one of the libraries I use manually loads each class on the classpath at startup to reduce loading times during operation. As a result, debugging my app immediately results in the process spinning at 100% and then eventually dying. If I take the command line intellij uses and remove the jars in the lib folder from the classpath, the application executes as expected. How do I make intellij not include the jre libs?

• Session Timeout and page response time

  Hi, I'm load testing an asp.net app. The load test is simulating 500 user doing searchs on the site and browsing the results. I'm observing that the more I reduce the session timeout limit (in web.config) the better the page response time. For exemple, with a timeout at 10 minutes, I got an average response time of 8.35 seconds. With a timout at 3 minutes, the average response time for the same page is 3,98 seconds. The session in stored "InProc". I supposed the memory used by the "no more used but still actives" sessions may be in cause. But, even if there is more memory used when the timeout is at 10, there is still plenty of memory available (about 2.7Gb). Any ideas?

• How do I find the previous/default value of a radio button in JS?

  I'm not sure if this is even possible, but I figured I'd ask before clubbing togehter an ugly solution. What I have is a group of radio buttons and I want to trigger a function if the radio button value is changed. For example say there are three buttons X Y and Z with Y default selected. If a user clicks on an unselected button (i.e. X or Z) then the function gets triggered but if he/she clicks on Y (which is already selected) nothing happens. Naturally the best solution would be to fire the function on an onchange event but IE6 doesn't fire onchange until the focus is no longer on the element which is not satisfactory. So is there a way to know what the previous value of the radio button was or at least what its default value is? I could easily create an array of default values and check against that but I'm trying to reduce the overhead. Please no jQuery suggestions ;)

It accesses SQLite database a lot. ARC option is enabled. I have many questions to ask: In .h files, I am defining IBOutlets like @property(nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet UIButton *bt; Where do i need to do bt=nil? in didReceiveMemoryWarning or viewDidLoad Live Bytes in Instruments tool is 4-5MB. Is it enough or I need to reduce memory usage? If so, how can I do so? Please mention few important points. The "f64" in the predicate just means that the data should be 64bit data. How should this be done?

• Is it possible to talk to the iPhone simulator/device.

  I need to automate the build/deploy process for my iphone applications from a script. I can use xcodebuild to build the project, then use Applescript to deploy and debug/run the application. Assuming the application will stop by itself after a while, I need to collect the generated logs for verification. But the problem is I have no way to know when the application ended from outside of the application itself. If the running time is fixed, I can again use Applescript to stop the application (Cmd+Shift+Enter). So there has to be a way to connect to the device/simulator and wait on the application somehow.

• Overlapping elements stop overlapping in IE7 on class change

  On this page http://zenchan.com/program/ When I rollover the right box 2nd from the top suddenly the overlapping (negative margin disappears). What's happening is that a 'hover' class is being added to shift the background sprite. The two yellow boxes are debugging: if the hover class is put their in advance there is no problem. So fundamentally the CSS is not a problem for IE7 but adding the class is. Any ideas what's causing this. I've tried adding haslayout to various elements but to little effect.

• Aptana function definition popups

  I've noticed that in Aptana 2.0 over 1.5.1 that when typing a php function, you no longer get the popup window showing the function description and it's parameters. Does anyone know how to get this working again? As I relied on it quite heavily to remember which parameters went where. Open in PHP Manual shortcut Shift+F2 also doesn't work either, so all I can do is open my browser and keep php.net open all the time. Are either of these features functional? I know that Open delcaration has never worked annoyingly, but I had the function popup in 1.5.1 perfectly.

• Vim: replacing start and end of a visual char, line or block

  I am trying to find a shortcut to place a custom comment sequence on my code, e.g.: /* start of comment blah end of comment /**/ (it is easier to void the comment by just adding a / to the beginning) I would like to do this in Vim by selecting a visual line, block or char and adding '/' characters at the beginning of the block and '/*/' at the end, plus newlines. After selecting some lines (Shift-V) I tried this: '<,'>s/\(.*\)/\/*\r\1\r\/**\// But it adds the comment chars at EACH newline. How can I only apply the substitution at the beginning and end of the selected range? Thanks gm

  The language shortcut public string Code { get; set; } saves a bit of typing when defining trivial properties in C#. However, I find myself writing highly repetitive, not-quite-as-trivial property code that still follows a clear pattern e.g. public string Code { get { return code; } set { if (code != value) { code = value; NotifyPropertyChanged("Code"); } } } I can certainly define a Visual Studio snippet to reduce typing. However, if I need to add something to my pattern, I have to go back and change quite a bit of existing code. Is there a more elegant approach? Is a snippet the best way to go?

• Javascript large number array compression

  Hi All, I've got a javascript application that sends a large amount of numerical data down the wire. This data is then stored in a database. I am having size issues (too much bandwidth, database getting too big). I am now ready to sacrifice some performance for compression. I was thinking of implementing a base 62 number.toString(62) and parseInt(compressed, 62). This would certainly reduce the size of the data but before I go ahead and do this I thought I would put it to the folks here as I know there must be some outside the box solution I have not considered. The basic specs are: - Compress large number arrays into strings for JSONP transfer (So I think UTF is out) - Be relatively fast, look I'm not expecting same performance as I have now but I also don't want gzip compression either. • Visual C++ 9 Linker file size limitation.

  It appears that the visual C++ 9 linker has a file allocation algorithm that doubles the size of the file every allocation, so you get 512mb, 1024mb, 2048mb, 4096mb. The problem is that it is using a library that cannot handle files larger 2048MB, and as such crashes with an error such as "cannot read file at is the disk full or write protected". Is there a way to bypass this limitation or otherwise replace the linker with something else that works? A bit of background, I have a code generator that generates a large number of files, ~15k cpp files, I've managed to reduce the number of files to something about 6k to get something that at least completes the linking process, I would like to be able to include all 15k without having to create multiple libs.

However, since I live in Argentina I have a Latin American keyboard, that makes everything in Vim pretty slower (to write / to search, I must press Shift+7). Since I don't want to be changing Keyboard layouts all the time (and its pretty difficult to get used to pressing symbols as in an English keyboard), I was wondering if there was a vim plugin (of .vimrc file) that may be useful for international users.   Hello, I have 2 tables Table1 with columns [BId,Name,Amount] Table2 with columns [CId,BId, ExpenseType,Expense]. BId Is the foreign key in Table2. The Amount field in Table1 is always higher than Expense in Table2. I need to update the values of Amount (increase or decrease) based on value of Expense and I want to do it in single query in LINQ. Eg If the Expense has to be updated with 200, I would decrease(negate) Amount value with 200. If Expense is reduce to 100 then the Amount is increased by a value of 100.   I want to change how my UI elements display, so I am overriding onDraw. The following code allows me to change a View to be drawn using PorterDuff.Mode.DARKEN. Unfortunately, this method involves creating a bitmap the size of the entire screen, then drawing to it then drawing this large bitmap the main screen again, for each UI element. This isn't at all efficient.   When interviewing new candidates, we usually ask them to write a piece of C code to count the number of bits with value 1 in a given byte variable (e.g. the byte 3 has two 1-bits). I know all the common answers, such as right shifting eight times, or indexing constant table of 256 precomputed results. But, is there a smarter way without using the precomputed table? What is the shortest combination of byte operations (AND, OR, XOR, +, -, binary negation, left and right shift) which computes the number of bites?

I am using visual studio 2005. the solution contains lots of projects, 34 projects in all, and the start up projects depends on others. then in linking part, it'll wait a long time before the real linking starts.   I want to ?reduce? the CPU usage/ROM usage/RAM usage - generally?, all system resources that my app uses - who doesn't? :) For this reason I want to split the preferences window from the rest of the application, and let the preferences window to run as ?independent? program. The preferences program ?should? write to a Property file(not a problem at all) and to send a "update signal" to the main program - which means it should call the update method (that i wrote) that found in the Main class. How can I call the update method in the Main program from the preferences program? To put it another way, is a way to build preferences window that take system resources just when the window appears? Is this approach - of separating programs and let them talk to each other (somehow) - the right approach for speeding up my programs?
