• Hook key & key combinations from keyboard with Qt 4.6

  Let's say I have a window-less application which has only an icon on the Taskbar (Windows, Mac OS X & Linux). I want it to capture some key & key combinations, let's say Right Control + Right Shift. Upon keying in correct, combination, it will do something, say take screenshot. I can do window-less app, icon on the Taskbar and screen capture but I don't know how to monitor keyboard globally for key combinations. Please kindly advise. Any help or hint is greatly appreciated! • Forcing a mixed ISO-8859-1 and UTF-8 multi-line string into UTF-8 in Perl

  Consider the following problem: A multi-line string $junk contains some lines which are encoded in UTF-8 and some in ISO-8859-1. I don't know a priori which lines are in which encoding, so heuristics will be needed. I want to turn $junk into pure UTF-8 with proper re-encoding of the ISO-8859-1 lines. Also, in the event of errors in the processing I want to provide a "best effort result" rather than throwing an error. • Why does this simple bash code give a syntax error?

  I have the following bash code, which is copied and pasted from "bash cookbook" (1st edition): #!/bin/bash VERBOSE=0; if [[ $1 =-v ]] then VERBOSE=1; shift; fi When I run this (bash 4.0.33), I get the following syntax error: ./test.sh: line 4: conditional binary operator expected ./test.sh: line 4: syntax error near `=-v' ./test.sh: line 4: `if [[ $1 =-v ]]' Is this as simple as a misprint in the bash cookbook, or is there a version incompatibility or something else here? What would the most obvious fix be? I've tried various combinations of changing the operator, but I'm not really familiar with bash scripting.

  Im doing some jquery stuff with toggle(), I'm doing different actions depending on if the current div is closing or showing, i know i can easy check if a div hasClass() or is(':visible') for what i want to do, but I'm thinking maybe there is somehow that i can reduce the amount of code or just do it more efficient? like declare the toggle() with two functions that this is for when its showing and this is for when its closing, is this possible? hope you get what i mean? like this, or check a jsfiddle $('#click_me').on('click', function() { $('#contain').toogle('blind', 300, function (){ alert('open'); }, function (){ alert('close'); }); });

• We failed trying database per custom installation. Plan to recover?

  There is a web application which is in production mode for 3 years or so by now. Historically, because of different reasons there was made a decision to use database-per customer installation. Now we came across the fact that now deployments are very slow. Should we ever consider moving all the databases back to single one to reduce environment complexity? Or is it too risky idea? The problem I see now is that it's very hard to merge these databases with saving referential integrity(primary keys of different database' tables can not be obviously differentiated). Databases are not that much big, so we don't have much benefits of reduced load by having multiple databases.

  i am using hibernate criterion for fetching results. Here with i provided demo design of my persistence class. Class A{ private B b; } Class B{ private C c; } Class C{ private Long val; } assume these are the hibernate persistence classes i am not writing all annotations of mapping with database. now my problem is i want to retrieve results of Class A according to the value of Class C's val property. i tried to fetch it using, Criteria c = Restrictions.eq("b.c.val", value); List l = c.list; it shows could not resolve property. i searched and came to know criteria wont work up to this much depth. i don't want shift to HQL. any idea??

• Anyway to improve my gzip PHP method?

  I Gzip my pages currently like so: <?php ob_start("ob_gzhandler"); //my page content ob_flush(); ?> However, I read a comment somewhere, earlier on, that this method uses a lot of memory, and I know that my website has been using a lot of memory on my virtual private server, so I thought it would be nice if I knew a way to reduce memory usage. I tested my site with an online gzip tester which says my websites are sending gzipped pages, so my gzip method works, but the main obviously I'm looking for a less memory intensive option, if any. I appreciate all suggestions. :) Oh and merry christmas ;P

• Shared data in an ASP.NET application

  I have a basic ASP.NET application which is used to request data which is stored on disk. This is loaded from files and sent as the response. I want to be able to store the data loaded from these files in memory to reduce the number of reads from disk. All of the requests will be asking for the same data, so it makes sense to have a single cache of in-memory data which is accessible to all requests. What is the best way to create a single accessible object instance which I can use to store and access this cached data? I've looked into HttpApplication, but apparently a new instance of this is created for parallel requests and so it doesn't fit my needs.

  I have the folowing struct of integers (32 bit environment): struct rgb { int r; int g; int b; }; Am I correct in saying that, since rgb component values (0-255) only require 8-bits(1 byte) to be represented, I am only using 1 byte of memory and leaving 3 bytes unused for each component? Also, if I instead did the following: struct rgb{ unsigned int r:8; unsigned int g:8; unsigned int b:8; }; Assuming that what I said above is correct, would using this new struct reduce the number of unused bytes to 1?

  In C#, How do you pass the Session[] and Request[] objects to a method? I would like to use a method to parse out Session and Request paramaters for a .aspx page to reduce the size of my Page_Load method. I am passing quite a few variables, and need to support both POSTand GET methods. For most calls, not all variables are present, so I have to test every variable multiple ways, and the code gets long... • CSS navigation submenu and seperator

  I have created a navigation bar that is centered with CSS which works. Each li item is separated with a border which is a background image. When hovering on the nav items, the separator disappears because the hover changes the background (I guess) but I wonder how I can fix this, padding or margin can't work because it will just shift the li element. Second problem is that the sub menu items aren't displaying correctly and I have no idea why... • scikit learn extratreeclassifier hanging

  I'm running the scikit learn on some rather large training datasets ~1,600,000,000 rows with ~500 features. The platform is Ubuntu server 14.04, the hardware has 100gb of ram and 20 CPU cores. The test datasets are about half as many rows. I set n_jobs = 10, and am forest_size = 3*number_of_features so about 1700 trees. If I reduce the number of features to about 350 it works fine but never completes the training phase with the full feature set of 500+. The process is still executing and using up about 20gb of ram but is using 0% of CPU. I have also successfully completed on datasets with ~400,000 rows but twice as many features which completes after only about 1 hour. I am being careful to delete any arrays/objects that are not in use. Does anyone have any ideas I might try?

  Let's say I have 4 people. Sometimes anyone can do a task, but sometimes they are specific. I would like to group people by skill. Is there any way I can do that? Right now, I have something like this: Resources: SkillA=3, GuyA=1, GuyB=1, GuyC=1 Task A <= SkillA Anyone can do it Task B <= SkillA, GuyB Only B can do it, but I also allocate the skill just to be sure I don't allocate more than 3 people at the same time. My problem with this approach is that sometimes GuyA is on holidays, but I can't reduce SkillA from 3 to 2 in that period.. Any tips?

• WPF - collapsing grid cells

  Hi, I'm having some problems with the layout of buttons on a screen. There are a number of buttons with the visibility set to collapsed depending on certain criteria. Anyway, with the buttons sitting in a stackpanel, the contents determine the width of the buttons. Because these should share the same size, I put them in a grid where the columns are using the SharedSizeGroup. Having done this, buttons now all share the same width, the smallest width needed to display the button with the largest content. What it does mean though is that buttons don't display at the required position. That is - assume five buttons in columns 0-4 where the first button is collapsed, buttons should ideally all shift to the left so that they always occupy space left to right. Is there any way I can accomplish this or, if not, how can I get buttons in a stackpanel to share the same width? Any help is much appreciated.

  First of all thanks for your attention. My question is how to reduce the execution time of my code. Here is the relevant code. The "file close" system command took the maximum time (14.546 seconds). The call_prism routine is called 10 times. But the number_of_strings is usually in thousands, so, my program takes lot of time to complete. Let me know if you need more information. By the way I tried with subprocess, too. Thanks.

• Weird behaviour of jquery's hide/show with the 'slide' effect. How to change?

  When doing $('.mydiv').show('slide', {direction:up}, 1500); //syntax may be a little off jQuery seems to - just before starting the animation - make room for the soon to be showed div. This creates a non-smooth effect making all elements below the showed div shift away in one big go. I would like to see the elements below the div move away as the div is animated/showed. The jQuery native hide()/show() function works like this, how come the slide effect of hide/show doesn't? Anyone knows how to fix it?

  Im making a small private message application in the form of a phone. Ten messages are shown at the time. And the list of messages are scrolled up/down by hiding them. Just how bad is it to use the DOM to store information in this way. My main goal for doing this is to reduce calls to the database. • Generating a perfectly distributed grid from array

  I'm looking for a formula or rule that will allow me to distribute n characters into a n*n grid with as perfect of a distribution as possible. Let's say we have an array of 5 characters, A through E. Here's an example of how it definitely shouldn't turn out: A B C D E B C D E A C D E A B D E A B C E A B C D The pattern is very clear here, it doesn't look "random". It would look better this way: A B C D E D E A B C B C D E A E A B C D C D E A B What I basically did here was place the A B C D E on the first row, then shift it by 2 on the second row, by 4 on the third row, 1 on the fourth row and 3 on the fifth row. Compared to the very bad example, this one shows no clear pattern. Though I'm certainly hoping there is a pattern, so I can use it to calculate not only small arrays such as this one, but arrays of any size. Any ideas as to how this can be accomplished?
