• X server with nvidia driver crashing: 12.04

  My X server consistently crashes. It seems like this is happening when the X server is idle. This behaviour is new with 12.04. This is only happening on the second display of a multiseat system. Is there a configuration change I can make to stop this? (tentative – I'll wait until things stabilize as this area is undergoing a pre-Cambrian explosion) Things I don’t want to work with: (but will if I'm asked to !) C# – same old, same old – not learning anything new here Old code – blech ! Environment with code & fix mentality , ad hoc requirements, excessive overtime Pc support, System administration – even after 20 years, people still ask you to do this sometimes ! debugging – my skills are just not there yet Oracle Old tech: VB 6, XSLT, WinForms, Net 3.51 or less Old style Web dev Information Systems: ASP.NET webforms, Reporting services / crystal reports, SQL Server CRUD with manual data layer, XAML MVVM – variations of the same concept, ad nauseaum. Low barriers of entry –> race to the bottom.  Metro – an elegant API coupled to a horrendous UX – I'll wait for market penetration viability before investing further in this.   Conclusion So if you are in a slump, take heart: Programming is a great career choice compared to every other job !

• Is Visual Source Safe (The latest Version) really that bad? Why? What's the Best Alternative? Why? [closed]

  Over the years I've constantly heard horror stories, had people say "Real Programmers Dont Use VSS", and so on. BUT, then in the workplace I've worked at two companies, one, a very well known public facing high traffic website, and another high end Financial Services "Web-Based" hosted solution catering to some very large, very well known companies, which is where I currently Reside and everything's working just fine (KNOCK KNOCK!!). I'm constantly interfacing with EXTREMELY Old technology with some of these financial institutions.. OLD LIKE YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE.. which leads me to the conclusion that if it works "LEAVE IT", and that maybe there's some value in old technology? at least enough value to overrule a rewrite!? right?? Is there something fundamentally flawed with the underlying technology that VSS uses? I have a feeling that if i said "someone said VSS Sucks" they would beg to differ, most likely give me this look like i dont know -ish, and I'd never gain back their respect and my credibility (well, that'll be hard to blow.. lol), BUT, give me an argument that I can take to someone whose been coding for 30 years, that builds Platforms that leverage current technology (.NET 3.5 / SQL 2008 R2 ), write's their own ORM with scaffolding and is able to provide a quality platform that supports thousands of concurrent users on a multi-tenant hosted solution, and does not agree with any benefits from having Source Control Integrated, and yet uses the Infamous Visual Source Safe. I have extensive experience with TFS up to 2010, and honestly I think it's great when a team (beyond developers) can embrace it. I've worked side by side with someone whose a die hard SVN'r and from a purist standpoint, I see the beauty in it (I need a bit more, out of my SS, but it surely suffices). So, why are such smarties not running away from Visual Source Safe? surely if it was so bad, it would've have been realized by now, and I would not be sitting here with this simple old, Check In, Check Out, Version Resistant, Label Intensive system. But here I am... I would love to drop an argument that would be the end all argument, but if it's a matter of opinion and personal experience, there seems to be too much leeway for keeping VSS. UPDATE: I guess the best case is to have the VSS supporters check other people's experiences and draw from that until we (please no) experience the breaking factor ourselves. Until then, i wont be engaging in a discussion to migrate off of VSS.. UPDATE 11-2012: So i was able to convince everyone at my work place that since MS is sun downing Visual Source Safe it might be time to migrate over to TFS. I was able to convince them and have recently upgraded our team to Visual Studio 2012 and TFS 2012. The migration was fairly painless, had to run analyze.exe which found a bunch of errors (not sure they'll ever affect the project) and then manually run the VSSConverter.exe. Again, painless, except it took 16 hours to migrate 5 years worth of everything.. and now we're on TFS.. much more integrated.. much more cooler.. so all in all, VSS served it's purpose for years without hick-up. There were no horror stories and Visual Source Save as source control worked just fine. so to all the nay sayers (me included). there's nothing wrong with using VSS. i wouldnt start a new project with it, and i would definitely consider migrating to TFS. (it's really not super difficult and a new "wizard" type converter is due out any day now so migrating should be painless). But from my experience, it worked just fine and got the job done.

• Unable to debug simple Java application in Eclipse. Cannot connect to VM. AGENT_ERROR_TRANSPORT_INIT(197)

  When i try to debug a simple application in Eclipse i receive a following error: Cannot connect to VM com.sun.jdi.connect.TransportTimeoutException And console provides me with a lonely string: FATAL ERROR in native method: JDWP No transports initialized, jvmtiError=AGENT_ERROR_TRANSPORT_INIT(197) I have JRE 1.6, JRE 1.7 and JDK 1.7 installed. Tried all of them. I've seen tons of same topics, but not a single answer helped me to solve my issue. Here they are: 1) Disable Firewall. Doesn't help. I have latest Avast ver. 9.0 at the moment. I'm a bit suspicious about that software, because before updating my Avast i was able to debug in Eclipse. I think it may cause this error, but i do not have direct clues :). I may ping my machine, firewall doesn't block Eclipse traffic, etc. 2) Add strings to hosts file. No reaction. ::1 localhost.localdomain localhost 127.0.0.1 localhost 3) Changing Network Settings in Java Control Panel to "Direct" connection. Doubtful advice. Also read that thing: http://wiki.eclipse.org/Debug/FAQ Can anyone help me to find out what is happening? Or guide me in the right direction?

• Hibernate 3.5-Final in JBoss 5.1.0.GA

  Hibernate 3.5-Final is finally here and it offers the much anticipated JPA2 support, amongst other features. I am working on a project(EJB3 based) using JBoss 5.1.0.GA and Hibernate 3.3, but I wanted to take advantage of the JPA2 and tried to upgrade to Hibernate 3.5. What I did was fairly simple and standard - I just put all the hibernate 3.5 jars in the server/configuration(default,all,etc)/lib folder - that way they take precedence over the hibernate artifacts shipped with JBoss. It seems though that JBoss ships with libraries that are dependent on the JPA1 implementation part of the hibernate 3.3, because I started getting some errors about unimplemented abstract methods and stuff like that on deploy: 23:21:26,792 WARN [Ejb3Configuration] Persistence provider caller does not implement the EJB3 spec correctly. • JavaFX Datagrid

  Hi All. Im in the verge of starting a new RIA development. We've been using Flex/Flash for the last 2 years but we were considering using a more OS approach so we though giving JavaFX a try since it seams the only solid option available. However after a couple of days of research we found out that there is not such thing as a datagrid for it, at least not in the core API. For those unfamiliar with Flex, a Datagrid is a component that allows you to display a collection of data in column-row layout (much like a HTML Table on steroids). The beauty of it is that you only need to worry about the data itself as the component does pretty much the rest (sorting, column dragging, etc). Im afraid to ask... but is there something slightly similar for JavaFX? We require nothing as fancy as Flex Datagrids/AdvancedDatagrids, we only require a easy, straight forward way to display grids of data that are able to have a little of interaction like clicking, sorting and that are able to display images, buttons, etc. without having to download a ton of different jars. If there isn´t something out there... This would be a shot in the back of the head to the idea of giving javaFx the chance to compete with flash on our project (which is sad). I really cant believe the SUN people didnt include something like this on the core API...

• Location of Java dump heap file?

  Well this is embarrassing ... I'm starting to play with the Eclipse Memory Analyzer to look for Java memory leaks on a Windows box. Step 1 is to obtain a heap dump file. To do this< I start my Java (javaw.exe) process from within Eclipse and connect to it with jconsole. Then on the jconsole MBeans tab I click the dumpHeap button. The first time I did this, I saw a pop-up saying it had created the heap dump file, but not giving its name or location. Now whenever I do a dumpHeap again while connected to a different javaw.exe process, jconsole says: Problem invoking dumpHeap : java.io.IOException: File exists and of course doesn't give its name or path. Where could it be? I've searched my C: drive (using cygwin command line tools) for files containing "hprof" or "java_pid" or "heapdump" and didn't find anything plausible. I've even used the Windows search to look for all files in my Eclipse workspace that have changed in the last day. I'm using the Sun Java 1.6 JVM, and don't have -XX:HeapDumpPath set.

• Can't install plugins in Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo) on Ubuntu

  Eclipse Version 3.5.2 Build id: M20100211-1343 Platform: Ubuntu 10.4 I go to install any new software Eclipse plugins (e.g., pydev, subclipse), and it gets to the 60% mark and stops. I wait for a long while and nothing happens. When I hit "cancel" a security warning comes up "Warning: You are installing software that contains unsigned content.." I click "OK" but it's too late because I've cancelled the installation already. It won't pop up until I hit "cancel". I've tried moving all the windows around, that security warning is not there. In previous incarnations of Eclipse, I've been able to click "OK" on that warning (no canceling) and all is well. I've also tried two JREs (Ubuntu's default openjdk and Sun's JDK 1.6.0_20). Is there some way to get that warning to come up, or even just have it always accept unsigned content? I've downloaded the zip of pydev and unzipped it into ~/.eclipse/org.eclipse.platform_3.5.0_155965261/ and Eclipse doesn't have Pydev when restarted, so manually installing plugins is also a pain. This is not my day. Yes, I see the other questions of this type and they don't seem to answer my problem.

The web service is running on Glassfish and is soap 1.1, I've tried using all the packaged wcf bindings but have not been able to get them to work. I started down the path of using a MessageInspector, and wrote one but then realized there must be a better way, surely WCF provides some way to insert saml 2.0 assertions. I've made the most progress writing a custom binding - i've been able to get the timestamp and signature nodes in the soap header, but cannot for the life of me figure out the saml assertion.   I'm just getting acquainted with implementing REST web services in Java using JAX-RS and I ran into the following problem. One of my resource classes requires access to a storage backend, which is abstracted away behind a StorageEngine interface. I would like to inject the current StorageEngine instance into the resource class serving the REST requests and I thought a nice way of doing this would be by using the @Context annotation and an appropriate ContextResolver class. This is what I have so far: In MyResource.java: class MyResource { @Context StorageEngine storage; [...] } In StorageEngineProvider.java: @Provider class StorageEngineProvider implements ContextResolver<StorageEngine> { private StorageEngine storage = new InMemoryStorageEngine(); public StorageEngine getContext(Class<?> type) { if (type.equals(StorageEngine.class)) return storage; return null; } } I'm using com.sun.jersey.api.core.PackagesResourceConfig to discover the providers and the resource classes automatically, and according to the logs, it picks up the StorageEngineProvider class nicely (timestamps and unnecessary stuff left out intentionally): INFO: Root resource classes found: class MyResource INFO: Provider classes found: class StorageEngineProvider However, the value of storage in my resource class is always null - neither the constructor of StorageEngineProvider nor its getContext method is called by Jersey, ever.   Hi all, I've created simple jax-ws (anotated Java 6 class to web service) service and deploied it on glassfish v3. The service works fine but I have 2 issues: I'm using apache common configuration package to read my configuration, so i have init function that calls configuration stuff. 1. How can I configure init method for jaxws service (like i can do for the servlets for example) 2. the load on startup parameter is not affecting the service, I see that for every request init function called again (and c-tor).   I am following this tutorial, I'm using netbeans 6.5.1 http://www.netbeans.org/kb/docs/java/gui-db-custom.html When I get to the part where I create the "new entity class from database", which is in the "Customizing the Master/Detail View" section of the tutoiral. I can't ever compile because I get this error in the task list (and I get a runtime error when I run)... Atleast I think these two are related.   Hi, Im migrating an ALBPM 6.5 running on a WLS 10.0 to an Oracle BPM 10.3.1 running on WLS 10.3.1 I got some problems with the Oracle driver because the old driver (weblogic.jdbcx.oracle.OracleDataSource) was definitely removed from the server and is not longer supported. Instead I used the thin driver (oracle.jdbc.xa.OracleXADataSource), the database migration was executed succesfully but after that, when I try to deploy the engine ear in WebLogic I got exceptions asociated to the driver: [ (cont) ] Main: Caused by: weblogic.application.ModuleException: [HTTP:101216]Servlet: "engineStartup" failed to preload on startup in Web application: "/albpmServices/albpm_engine". • Jar not found when executing class

  Hi there, I'm working through the ANTLR book and there are many examples that should be easy to compile using the command line. Some information to get te problem: antlr-3.2.jar contains the ANTLR classes. I added the antlr-3.2.jar to the CLASSPATH environment variable (Windows 7) and when compiling the classes with javac everything works fine. This is what i execute to compile my program: javac Test.java ExprLexer.java ExprParser.java Test.java contains my main()-method whereas ExprLexer and ExprParser are generated by ANTLR. All three classes use classes contained in the antlr-3.2.jar. But so far so good. As I just said, compiling works fine. It's when I try to execute the Test.class that I get trouble. This is what I type: java -cp ./ Test When executing this, the interpreter tells me that he can't find the ANTLR-classes contained in the antlr-3.2.jar, altough I added an entry in the CLASSPATH variable. But I don't want to type the jar-Archive everytime I execute my test programs. Is there a possibility to tell the interpreter that he should automatically look into the archive?

• Why is it so difficult to get a working IDE for Scala?

  I recently gave up trying to use Scala in Eclipse (basic stuff like completion doesn't work). So now I'm trying IntelliJ. I'm not getting very far. This was the original error. See below for update: Scala signature Predef has wrong version Expected 5.0 found: 4.1 in .... scala-library.jar I tried both versions 2.7.6 and 2.8 RC1 of scala-*.jar, the result was the same. JDK is 1.6.u20. UPDATE Today I uninstalled IntelliJ 9.0.1, and installed 9.0.2 Early Availability, with the 4/14 stable version of the Scala plug-in. • Cannot add Authorization field to HttpsUrlConnection in order to complete Basic authentication

  Hi, I'm using the Sun API HttpsURLConnection class, and have been trying for a day now to get it to send a simple request: URL url = new URL("https://thirdpartyserver.com/somelocation"); connection = (HttpsURLConnection)url.openConnection(); connection.setDoOutput(true); connection.setRequestMethod("POST"); if (doAuthorization) { Base64Converter converter = new Base64Converter(); connection.setRequestProperty("Authorization", "Basic " + converter.encode("username:password")); } OutputStreamWriter writer = new OutputStreamWriter(connection.getOutputStream()); writer.write("param1=100&param2=hello"); writer.flush(); writer.close(); I keep getting 401 from the third part server. When I look at the connection through the debugger, the method shows up as GET even though I set it to POST; the collection of request properties shows up as null. If I print the values out, the method shows up as POST, but the request parameters collection is still empty. I would love to be able to print the request and understand what's going on, but I could not figure out how to print the content of an output buffer. Any ideas? Thanks! ES
