• Best Server Ghost-Like Tool For Windows

  I'm looking for advice on which tool we should use to clone servers. In the short term, we will be cloning identical hardware but in the long run we may want to create one image and replicate that on a different class of machine. For example, as new servers are released from Dell, we will want to continue to use the same image we already made. Right now our servers are Windows (Server 2008 & Server 2008 R2), but moving forward we may need Linux support as well. Ghost Solution Suite 2.5 seems to be the canonical tool. Are there alternatives? Recommendations/reviews?

• Using a CF card as an IDE HDD

  I have an old Sony laptop (Vaio TR1-MP) that I like. The HDD has died and since it's a hard-to-find 1.8" IDE hard drive I'm considering buying one of those little CF card adaptors and a 16gb CF card. The total cost of that is about £30 and replacement HDDs for this model are far pricier. Has anyone replaced their HDD with a CF card in this way, and, crucially, is the performance utterly horrible afterwards? ;-) I've seen a couple of threads which hint it's possible but the advice eventually given was just to buy a SSD, but I'm not even sure if its possible to get a 1.8" SSD with an IDE connector that'll fit my laptop. (I freely admit that the most sensible thing to do would be to bin it and just buy a cheap netbook which would be smaller, faster and lighter than the sony, but it does have a very nice widescreen display and dammit I just like it !)   To be sure nobody will answer me with advice on not trying to terminate critical (system) processes - I'm relatively experienced in programming and Windows in general - I'd know what I'm doing so far. So there are these processes that can't be terminated with taskkill - system processes in general. But there also is, for example my Anti Virus program that makes itself "unterminateable". How can I access and mainly terminate system processes under windows? (kill.exe by Microsoft doesn't work) How do processes like anti-virus programs protect themselves? How can you turn them off again, then?

• Mac Console.app not logging any messages

  I recently attempted to overcome the 500 message limitation on console logs using the advice provided here: Mac: Extend or disable 500 Messages Limit of Console I copied the PLIST file onto my desktop, made the modifications, and re-copied into the LaunchDaemon folder. No dice. Unfortunately, this also broke logging in general- the console hasn't logged a message since I attempted this switch. I even went back and undid my changes. Still no logs. What's going on? Is there a way to reinstall Console.app, or revert to original settings?

• Install additional PHP version in different folder on Ubuntu 8.04

  Hi, I'm on a Host Europe VPS running Ubuntu 8.04 server. PHP version is 5.2.4. Now there is an application (Moodle 2.0) that needs at least PHP 5.2.8. I don't want to upgrade serverwide to PHP 5.2.8 because that might impair other applications (e.g. Plesk). The FAQ at Host Europe suggest to install an additional PHP 5.2.8 in /opt/php and I think I can handle that with $ dpkg -i php_..._.deb --root /opt/php (Is that correct, by the way?) However, how do I point Apache to the new PHP installation? Thanks for any advice, Ralf

• Restoring Mac-bootcamp-windows-partition image to Windows machine

  Hi, I'm running Windows XP sp3 on my mac using bootcamp. Objective: I'd like to move this partition to a windows machine. This is what I tried: 1. create image using winclone 2. restore drive to disk partition on windows machine using paragon 3. reboot from new partition Results: it attempts to boot in XP (windows flag and progress bar load screen) but then gives me the old BSOD. safe mode just hangs while loading. (I then uninstalled KB977165 on a hunch, but that did nothing to help the issue.) Any ideas, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• Does exportfs disrupt users already utilizing those filesystems?

  I need to modify a servers /etc/exports file to export to an additional host. After modifying this file, for it to take effect (i.e. for the additional host to have access to the designated filesystem), I believe I have to run "exportfs" on the server exporting the filesystem. Does this disrupt users who are currently using filesystems that are exported from that serving host? I'm hoping to add this new host "silently", without disruption. Any additional advice related to this, common traps, things to be careful of, etc. would be appreciated if you have any. • Need solutions in sharing a 3Mb/768Kbps DSL line to 60+ users and faster bandwidth

  Two parts. Part 1: We currently have 2 DSL Lines with 3Mb/768Kbps speeds load balanced for 60+ users. Accessing the Internet is borderline unusable. The simple solution would be to get a faster DSL Line but the highest DSL package is 6Mb/768Kbps, has quite the price jump, and doesn't do anything to help with upload speeds. I'm looking for free or extremely low cost solutions (web cache, traffic shaping, bandwidth controls, etc) to help with making Internet access more bearable until the next funding year. Can anyone give any advice? Part 2: We're looking into a 4.5Mb bonded T1 in the next funding year which is of course significantly more expensive than 2 DSL lines. Are bonded T1s our only hope for faster speeds? Are there any better alternatives?

• Problem with screen redrawing at DOS app in VmWare Player

  I have very old DOS Application (CadSoft Eagle - PCB Designer) and I want to work with it on my workstation with Windows 7. Then I install Windows 98 and that software into VmWare Player. But that software has serious problem with redrawing screen. It's very slow in comparison with my Intel Celeron 333MHz with Windows 98. I have same problem if I try to use DOSBox on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz). I also trying run this application directly on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz) with compatibility mod set to "Windows 98", but I get "(0Dh): General Protection Fault". Can someone give me good advice how I solve that?

• Bluetooth connectivity

  computer: Samsung All in One PC OS: Windows 7 (up-to-date) BT Radio: Broadcom I have Bluetooth speakers I have successfully used with the system in the past. In fact, I had them set as default speakers so audio would transfer when I turned them on. No longer. Now, they show as 'disconnected'. Asking for connection gives no response. Option to set as default is greyed out. Bluetooth view utility gives an error of 10049 when I try to connect (supposedly, the means an invalid device address). I uninstalled the device and re-installed. No help. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

  Using github for the first time. In terminal I receive this error git: command not found If I type in terminal which git it returns nothing. If I type which github it returns /usr/local/bin/github Github's command line utility seems to be installing a github but not a git. echo $PATH returns /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin. Currently do not have a .bash_profile or .profile. Not sure if that is significant. Am a command line and $PATH rookie but am determined to learn. Mac OS version 10.6.8 and Github version 1.2.8. All advice is appreciated.

  I'm running IIS 7.5 on Windows 7 Ultimate. I've installed PHP Version 5.2.14 using Microsoft Web Platform Installer. I've created a virtual directory and a file with which I can browse it and it returns all the PHP information just fine. I'm trying to install MantisBT, and when I copy all the file to my virtual directory and browse index.php I receive the following error detail: Error Summary HTTP Error 500.0 - Internal Server Error The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred.   When I signed up for my Debian Linux VPS hosting and first logged on and invoked ps, there was the only user process running: sshd. As I can see, this was minimal Linux with only two things installed and configured: sshd and apt (plus all dependencies, of course). I want to build (or use existing) similar Linux distro, any advice on how to build (or pick) one? Googling "minimum linux", or "linux with sshd only" usually brings up Debian's netinstall, which is not what I want. Thanks in advance.

• SSL 3.0 warning in Chrome on Ubuntu 10.04LTS

  I'm running Apache2 with SSL on Ubuntu 10.04LTS. Chrome gives me this annoying warning when I inspect the certificate: The connection had to be retried using SSL 3.0. This typically means that the server is using very old software and may have other security issues. The relevant part of the apache config looks like: SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile /etc/ssl/... SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/ssl/... SSLCACertificateFile /etc/ssl/... SSLProtocol -all +SSLv3 +TLSv1 The last line I added to try to address this problem, but it's not working. Any advice on properly enabling TLS?

• Windows XP - non-user input data filter message after installing wireless keyboard & mouse

  After I installed MS wireless keyboard and mouse and associated software, I started getting this annoying message titled "Hardware installation" telling me the software I am trying to install did not pass the XP logo tests. The software is for "HID non-user input data filter" and I have two options Continue anyway or stop installation. Now, if I try to continue the installation fails, if stop installing another message pops up with a little mouse logo and the whole process repeats itself. after I am done with that message a third dialog appears. This is happening every time I boot up my PC (a desktop), I tried following an advice I found in some forum and download windows update for ID non-user input data filter, but that installation failed as well. The thing is, that both keyboard and mouse are working fine Is there anyway to get past these dialogs ?

• What are 'damaged files' on external hard drive (HFS format for OS X)?

  I have an external HD formatted to default HFS (Mac OS Extended - Journaled) and very once and a while I get a folder called DamagedFiles in the root of the volume. The folder contains a collection of links to files on the drive. In general the files seem fine as I am for example able to open the images or text files without a problem. Is this serious? What can I do to fix this problem? Any advice would be great as I couldn't find anything on here or via Google that addressed this problem in particular. Many thanks.

  In Notepad++ (v5.9), I want to search for files which contain two words. For example, I would like to find all text files in a directory that have both Alpha and Bravo in the file. They may not be next to each other and they may have multiple occurrences of either. I just want to find the files that have at least one instance of each. Is there a way to structure this search without resorting to Regular Expressions? Thanks for the advice.

• Virtualization Solution for Family Use

  I'm trying to put together a solution for my family (wife + three kids). At the moment I have one newish desktop and a couple of aging laptops. There are always arguments over who should have the fast desktop. I'm thinking I would like to invest in a new powerful server and then run virtual desktops for each user off the server so that each user would have the same experience regardless of which actual PC they were using. I would like to use just a Linux based desktop, but unfortunately I need to support some Windows games for the kids. I've not tried wine for the games but would be willing to give it a try. Any advice on what the setup should be would be most appreciated.

(A multiported logical device shows up on two or more HBAs with the same storage system subsystem/device identity. The identity comes from the serial number for the logical device.) For each storage system logical device found in the scan of the HBAs, powercf creates a corresponding emcpower device entry in the emcp.conf file, and it saves a primary path and an alternate primary path to that device.

• Pinnacle Studio 14 Importer crashes on Windows 7 x64

  Pinnacle Studio 14 Importer crashes on Windows 7 x64, thus I'm unable to import videos from my camcorder. I've Googled around and it seems to be a problem with x64 support in the program, but there is no info if it can somehow be remedied with Compatibility settings, XP mode. Further Googling got me this link, and none of the tips in site it links help. I've got no idea what ObjectDoct Plus 2 is (no a program or service installed by that name) which he claims causes the problem. Is that ObjectDoct critical to Pinnacle Studio and how to get rid of it (or any other advice how to make Studio 14 work on x64). UPDATE: 1) XP mode doesn't help as it doesn't handle Firewire, which is how my Canon HV20 must be connected to transfer HDV from tape. 2) I don't have that ObjectDock installed. 3) I don't wanna re-buy PS15 just to get this solved as PS14 should be able to do it.

• Share ADSL Internet connection between two computers 40 meters away (straight) from each other

  I have a box with a working ADSL Internet connection. About 40 meters away (straight), in another house, there is another, older box. There are two houses in between. Would there be some practical way to supply an Internet connection to the older box? The neighbors are ok with us installing cables and stuff. I'd say wifi would not be practical, since the houses in between would weaken the signal too much. And using Ethernet cables might require a switch or router in between, due to Ethernet distance limitations. Advice?

• Sending mail from PHP with exim4

  Hello, A web server I manage is having problems sending mail from PHP. This server uses exim4 for MTA, and it is configured correctly. I can send emails from PHP's CLI, but not from the web. i.e. if I do "php mailtest.php" on the command line, the email gets sent correctly, but if I browse to server.com/mailtest.php, mail() returns false and the email never gets sent. Nothing appears in the exim mainlog. Any advice, or things I should look for ? Thanks!

  we're using lotus notes 8.5 and I have a user who was over his quota as he had sent 6 email with attachement over 800 MB (no comment...) I deleted these oversized email and empty the trash but domino keep sending email warning about quota. I checked in the all documents view and they are no longer there, I re-did an empty the trash. I saw a post on the internet saying to compact his database, when I go under file, application, properties and click on the info tab, I see that he use 35.7% of the 3 GB database. when I click on "compact" I see a message saying the compact of the database is beeing process... the message disapear after about 1 minutes the message disapear but nothing else seem to happen and when I look back later on the space problem has not changed. any advice would be appreciated.

• HDD not detected whenever first power on (detected at BIOS level)

  I am using Asus P8H61-M LX Motherboard with latest version of BIOS: 4401 One SATA-3 Western Digital Black Series 1.5TB is attached to SATA port 0 A Samsung 22x DVDRW SATA drive attached to SATA Port 1. ps/2 Logitech mouse and keyboard. CPU is i3 with DDR3 8Gb RAM. no other devices are installed. My problem is that when I turn on the computer, the WD HDD is not detected. ie cannot be booted. I have to press ctrl+alt+del in order to get it detected. I'd used the WD data lifeguard software to scan the HDD, the smart status is OK, the surface scan does not show any error at all. Where did I do wrong? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
