• USB HD Freezes Windows Explorer

  I recently purchased a "Seagate STBX1000200 1TB Expansion 2.5 inch External Hard Drive". It has been working without problems until recently. When i plug the device into a USB port the device is recognised as it appears in the device manager but when i go to Windows Explorer and try to open it (or right click on it) it hangs/freezes windows explorer. Please note i am using Windows 7 Professional. I have already tried various things without success after searching for people with similar problems. I did read that it could be a problem with how the computer assigns a drive letter. But whrn i go to disk management (when running as an administrator) it hangs and displays the following message: Connecting to virtual disk service I'd appreciate it if anyone could offer some advice. • How are Linux files and applications organized?

  Hi there, I'm a newbie Linux (Ubuntu) user and I'll like to know if someone can give some advices of where to install stuff, which folders don't touch, which is the meaning of each folder and so on. My first concern is, should everything go into my home folder? I've installed "manually" Komodo Edit (it's an IDE) and it has gone to my home folder, I really don't like the idea of having an application there. (in windows I used to have my workfiles/pictures/downloads... partition and then the OS partition with all the apps). So, is there any place where I could install this software? Any advice for having my home folder ordered? Maybe I should create an apps folder in my home dir? Thanks in advance. :) pd: most of the time I use apt to install stuff, but I don't always found the software I want there...

• How to run statically linked programs on a shell account?

  I have a shell account where I am not allowed to compile anything. There are however tools I need to run, some very simple ones like Midnight Commander, mcedit, most, jed I am trying to find a staically linked version that "just works" in my shell. Could anyone give me any advice on where I could find statically builds? I have not been able to find it with google. I could compile it myself, but I would have to find out which headers I need to compile for. I have never tried to do it before, so any help would be greatly apprechiated! • What is the main reason for ADSL modem/routers dying?

  The other day my home ADSL modem/router (dwg 684t in this case) died. A guy from the telecom company came to my place and brought another one, but he also left this one. Now, I'm interested - it didn't fall, it wasn't electrocuted - but it just doesn't work. What could be the problem? Can it be fixed? Is it worth it (in which case I would have two which is always nice)? I'm not looking for a definite opinion, just your personal advice ... (although in the end I think I'm going to archive it in the "cylinder register") What are the usual problems that occur with them? In this case, I can connect to the router, I can see its settings, I just can't connect to the Internet. With the new one everything works. Weird.

• Adding a W2008 Authenticating Server to existing W2003 Domain?

  I have an existing W2003 Domain, simple setup with one DC and a SQL Server (approx 100 users). There are issues with Windows 7 Clients and login scripts and we're now seeing much greater numbers of Windows 7 users turning up as they upgrade their PC/Laptops. What I want to do, is add another Server with W2008 on it, and authenticate the Windows 7 Clients - but leave the W2003 server running as is - to prevent disruption to the network and the existing WinXP users. Is it possible? Any advice as to how do this, without major disruption to the W2003 network?

• ubuntu server refusing connections via port forwarding

  Getting some really weird behavior from our Ubuntu server... it's behind a Verizon router firewall with port forwarding (port 8080 to port 80 on the server), and we've been having issues accessing it via this external IP. From within the network, it appears to respond normally (I can access it via web browser and SSH), but refuses connections through port forwarding (using our static external IP). The strangest thing is that it actually responds to external port-forwarded connections right after being restarted, but quickly lapses back into this pattern of refusing external connections. I'm a bit of a server newbie (I'm actually a programmer in a small startup that just lost their server ops guy, urgh) so this is all trial by fire for me. Does anyone have any advice on what could be going wrong here? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

• Additional Hard Drives for Servers

  Hello all, I am developing a web app where I will have to save lots of files and I am just trying to work out the directory structure and where things should be saved to. I have had a look at the dedicated server I want to buy and for storage it shows this: 2x 1TB SATA in RAID1 The space is enough but I am guessing this will not be on one hard drive? I will have to save files on one hard drive and when that fills up, I have to use the other? For the Fedora distro - what is the path for the second drive? Is there a primary drive where I will be able to setup my webroot? I am sorry, this is all new to me. It would be great to links and advice on how things actually work when it comes to additional hard drives etc. Thanks all

  Hi! I'm trying to create a 'left client' server < 'right client' setup but need some advice and tips. Let's say that I have a server-daemon on the left side, like a vnc-server that connects to the middle server. On the right side I've got a client that want to connect to the left server-daemon, but it has to be done through the middle server. I assume this should be done with some tunneling service. • WindowsXP+7 on C:/D: :moving the System Partition

  I had installed Windows 7 on a separate 20gig partition, and I'm absolutely loving it! Plus I can now dual-boot, with my original WinXP residing on the C: drive. But I'm running out of disk space on D:, and I was able to shrink C: and expand D:. But now I would like to make D: not just a Boot Partition, but an Active System Partition, without losing my ability to boot into Windows 7 (since it was created on a separate D: partition, not the current Active System C: Partition). Any advice?

I want to remote desktop connection to my friend over the internet, but I don't have premission for port forwarding on the router, and my friend also can't configure his router. • When using RAID10 + BBWC why is it better to separate PostgreSQL data files from OS and transaction logs than to keep them all on the same array?

  I've seen the advice everywhere (including here and here): keep your OS partition, DB data files and DB transaction logs on separate discs/arrays. The general recommendation is to use RAID1 for OS, RAID10 for data (or RAID5 if load is very read-biased) and RAID1 for transaction logs. However, considering that you will need at least 6 or 8 drives to build this setup, wouldn't a RAID10 over 6-8 drives with BBWC perform better? What if the drives are SSDs? I'm talking here about internal server drives, not SAN.

• It takes a long time until windows xp recognize I connected USB diks

  Hello IT guys, I have a problem with my new USB disk. When I connect it to my laptop with Windows XP SP2 it takes about 4-5min until Windows recognized it and show it as a new disk. I can also see (disk's LED is blinking) that something is scaning the disk when I connect it, when this is done Windows imediately recognize it. Also when I'm copying data to this disk the speed is about 3.5MB/sec. It's connected using USB2.0. I tried to check for spyware (using spybot), also run windows in safe mode. But still have the same problems. Do you have any idea what could help to solve this problem? On Windows Vista (another laptop) everything is ok, disk loads in about 15sec and speed is about 20-30MB/sec. Thanks a lot for every advice!

• WD Elements Desktop External - Not recognised on a single computer

  My WD Elements Desktop External is no longer recognised on my main computer. It has worked fine in the past, but now all of a sudden is not detected. It does not prompt when plugged in, nor does it show up in the disc management interface or the device manager. It appears to be aware that it is plugged in however as the light on the external blinks rapidly for a short while after being plugged in. The strangest thing however is that it works fine on other computers, including my family computers and my laptop. I have attempted to troubleshoot the issue by trying various USB devices in multiple ports on each system to see if there is any correlation with the issue, but have come up with nothing that gives me an idea of what is going on. I have also attempted to format the external using my laptop, but that has not helped either. If anyone has had a similar issue, or knows of any potential solutions, please post your advice. • Disk fragmentation when dealing with many small files

  On a daily basis we generate about 3.4 Million small jpeg files. We also delete about 3.4 Million 90 day old images. To date, we've dealt with this content by storing the images in a hierarchical manner. The heriarchy is something like this: /Year/Month/Day/Source/ This heirarchy allows us to effectively delete days worth of content across all sources. The files are stored on a Windows 2003 server connected to a 14 disk SATA RAID6. We've started having significant performance issues when writing-to and reading-from the disks. This may be due to the performance of the hardware, but I suspect that disk fragmentation bay be a culprit at well. Some people have recommended storing the data in a database, but I've been hesitant to do this. An other thought was to use some sort of container file, like a VHD or something. Does anyone have any advice for mitigating this kind of fragmentation?

  I'm going to refurbish the IT-infrastructure for a small organization with one single office, and I'm not sure what VPN server to use. In your opinion, would the built-in Windows Server 2008 VPN server suffice or are there any specific problems with it as opposed to, for example, OpenVPN? I'd rather run a Windows native VPN server, but if there are few (preferably free) good alternatives, I could install VMware ESXi and virtualize both Windows and an OpenVPN-server. By the way, because of a low budget this office runs a solution with only one physical server. Any advice would be great to help me grasp this field of which I'm quite a novice. Thank you!

• converting 0+1 raid array to 0

  I'm currently running raid 0+1; four 500 GB drives in the array.. I'm looking at migrating the array from 0+1 (Stripe+Mirror) to 0 only (stripe).. The goal is to remove the hard drives from the array in order to put them in the newly purchased Drobo, then copy the data from the remaining striped raid to the said Drobo.. Is it sufficient to just remove the drives themselves and change the raid configuration within the nvidia raid config?? Or is there something more that needs to be done?? Does the order matter (i.e. removing drives first or changing the raid configuration??) Is it possible to migrate the array this way without having any loss of data? I'm wary about burning all that data to DVDs (few hundred GB worth) to back it up.. Any other advice from people that may have done this (or have other insight) would be helpful as well..

  Hi, I setup a private network from virtual machines and one of the machines is the DHCP server for the group. I want to specify a next-server for the DHCP server but I'm having trouble connecting to any of the machines that I lease IPs to. I'm just trying to do a simple ping/ssh to 10.0.0.252 (a machine with a lease) but it doesn't seem to respond. Any advice? • Import EML emails into Outlook 2010 64-bit

  Evening everyone. I'm helping setup a small office network, where a number of old PC's are being replaced with new ones with a 64-bit copy of Outlook 2010. The old emails were stored in Windows Live Email, and were exported as .eml files (since we were replacing the machines). All the support I can find indicates that .eml files could simply be dragged-and-dropped into a folder in Outlook 2010, and it will import them correctly. However, it seems this is not the case in the 64-bit versioin, where dropping in .eml files results in a new message being created with these files as attachments. We can re-download the most of the emails off the server if need be, but there were user folders which were not on the server which we were hoping to import. Any advice would be fantastic at this point!

• Nginx load distribution and multi-domain SSL

  I'm researching into the best methods of two new parts of our infrastructure, hopefully finding a single solution for both. 1) We're currently running a single application server, and we're going to be adding an additional application server and load balance between the two. 2) We handle a few thousand domains across the application server(s), and we're looking to support SSL. The best method i've come across so far is using nginx for it's Load Distribution to serve the requests to the application servers, and for it's SSL support. If a request is using SSL, nginx accepts the request on, terminates SSL and pipes to apache (app servers). Now, that's all good, but i'm yet to figure out how we can let nginx handle multiple domains using SSL. We're potentially looking at using UCC SSL Certs, so we can support 150 domains on a single certificate, with each cert on a single IP. I'm all new to this (My experience is just with physical load balancers and a single domains on SSL), so any advice would be very much appreciated.
