  Hey all, I know very little about JD Edwards. I have a client asking how to call an API we supply (as COM, C#, REST) from JD Edwards. I'm not getting much in terms of high quality answers from their tech guy... so I thought I'd ask here. Can JD Edwards call C#? Can JD Edwards call Java? Can JD Edwards call a Unix scipt? Can anyone point me towards anything useful in terms of developer/customization documentation? Thanks!

• iPhone: Having trouble figuring out how to scroll a UITableView with custom UITextField cells automa

  Ok, I know this seems like a duplicate question, but don't think it is. I actually have this implemented already (thanks to this SO question), but it seems sluggish. I am willing to tweak it a bit, but I ran across a demo app by AboutObjects that seems to have exactly the right functionality with absolutely no code doing it. I have looked through their demo code dozens of times, and I can't figure out what they are doing that I am not. The code to look at is in their iPhone Development Tutorials section, and is called "Editable TableView" (2nd from the bottom). There are a couple of questions on the forums on that site asking how they got the functionality, but there is no answer (other than "It's a built in function"). Does anyone have any clue as to why their UITableView would implement the input scrolling by default (including being able to scroll the view manually when the keyboard pops up, which I cannot get to work)?

• Nielson's usablity scale

  Just wondering if anyone out there knows of a standard survey (preferably based off Jacob Nielson's work on usability) that web admin's can administer to test groups for usability? I could just make up my own but I feel there as got to be some solid research out there on the sort of judgments on tasks I should be asking. For example Q:: Ask user to find profile page Do I ... A.) Present them with standard likert scale after each question B.) Present them the likert after all the questions .. Then what should that likert be, I know Nielson's usability judgments scale is based on Learnability, Efficiency of Use, Memorability, Error Rate, Satisfaction but I can only imagine a likert I would design that would effectively measure satisfaction...how am I suppose to ask a user to rank the Memorability of a site after one use on a 1-5 scale? Surely someone has devised a good way to pose the question?

  I've been studying objective-c for a few days now. I keep coming across these two structures: NSString * somestring (NSString *) somestring I understand the first simply sets a pointer to an NSString object, but what does the second construct do, and when should I use it? What's the deal with the asterix marks? Sorry if this question doesn't make any sense, I am completely new to this language, and haven't even reached the level of asking proper questions. • Question about spring manning-in-action

  I saw people asking about best book for learning spring, and I came across manning.spring in action was recommended most of the time so I decided to give it a go. The thing is the author offers some pretty reasonable explanations, puzzle by puzzle it gets in your head, than you just need to code it and you're done, you get it(this is how I work don't know about the others). When it comes to the code its very disapointing, I went trought the Knight example like 2 or 3 times by now and I see its incorrect in the book, I mean its hard already for people eager to learn and why not a note somewhere in the book like pseudo-code or something. The knight example in the first chapter is missing two classes QuestFailedException and HolyGrail I mean other people must have noticed this, why is everyone recommending this book without saying at least it has some errors(like many others do), was anyone actually been able to compile and this first chapter example?

• What is the release date for Rakudo Star (perl6)?

  If a specific release date is not available (as I suspect it is not), can you provide resources for tracking how close it is to the desired feature set that allows release. I'm not necessarily asking for a percentage gauge, or X of Y features completed list. A list of bugs marked in whichever section of the perl RT instance that's tracking Rakudo bugs would meet my criteria, even more so if the list is dynamic (I.e. it's a list of bugs tagged in some manner, not a static list of ticket numbers). If there are only a few planned features left to be finished/tested before it's considered ready for final testing, listing those would also be sufficient.

• Are you a good or bad programmer?

  Hi All, I see a lot of questions on SO that are asked about 'good' programmers vs 'bad' programmers. For example, what is a good/bad programmer, how to tell a good/bad programmer, what to do about a bad programmer on a team, how to hire a good programmer. I know it's pretty easy to apply the words to other people, but I find myself wondering if anyone out there would actually define THEMSELVES in a Boolean fashion like this, rather than "good in some areas, weak in others..." I'm not asking as an either/or where you have to be one or the other, but as a 'both' - are you a good or bad programmer? If so (either one), why? Please note this isn't meant to be argumentative, or to define good/bad practices, etc. I just want to know how many people think they are good, bad, or neither out there.

• PHP: why uniqid returned value is only 13 digits long

  uniqid() function returns a 13 digits long hexadecimal number. According to the spec in php.net site, the function uses microtime to generate the unique value. But microtime returns numbers in string format as the following one: "0.70352700 12689396875" which are basically the microseconds and the seconds elapsed since 1970. This is a 9+11 digits decimal number. Converting a 20 decimal number into hex would result in a 16 digits hexadecimal NOT a 13 digits one. I also thought to take out the "0." part that seem to never change, and the last two digits of the microsec part that seem to remain always "00". Doing this the decimal number would be only 9+11-3 digits long, but still a decimal number of 17 digits when converted into hex would result in 14 digits hexadecimal number NOT 13. You probably think I'm crazy in asking such a thing, but I'm concerned about using uniqid, unique values are important to be unique, a duplicated value could screw up an entire application.

  I'm releasing an application I wrote as an open-source project by creating a public source-code repository. I use a third-party library which is also open-source and freely redistributable. I'm not versioning the third-party library, but should I include it in my repository for the convenience of those cloning the repository or should I expect them to download the third-party library on their own? To be clear, I'm not asking if I should version the third-party code or if I can redistribute it, but whether it is standard practice to include third-party source code as a convenience.

• Socksifying a Java ServerSocket - how to approach

  I would like to have a Java program running on network A have a ServerSocket living on another network B through a proxy. I have played with a SOCKS5 proxy (which works) but it appears that all the proxy facilities in Java only work with client connections, not with ServerSockets (no constructor taking a Proxy argument). Asking Google gives much hay and few needles. What is the approach I should take to get this running? If a specific client is better than a generic SOCKS or web proxy then fine, but it needs to be Java (that leaves sshd out). Target JVM is preferrably Java 5, and then Java 6.

• Need advice on organizing two WPF applications within one Visual Studio solution

  I have a WPF application (KaleidoscopeApplication) organized as follows: Solution (6 projects) Cryptography (DLL) Rfid (DLL) KaleidoscopeApplication (buildable "startup project") Basically, KaleidoscopeApplication contains a bunch of resources (sounds, images, etc) and your standard WPF junk (App.xaml, App.xaml.cs, other xaml and code). I need to create a new application that is very similar to Kaleidoscope, but I'm not sure of the best way to organize. This new app will need access to much of the same code and resources as Kaleidoscope. Preferably, I would like to create a new project in the solution, then simply use the "set as startup project" to pick which app I want to build. However, will I be able to access (share) the Resources folder of Kaleidoscope? I know I will be able to access much of the code if I simply add a reference to the project and include a "using Kaleidoscope". But the resources I'm not so sure about. Is this the right way to organize or am I asking for trouble in the future? Thanks in advance!

• Coding in Other (Spoken) Languages

  Something i've always wondered, and I can't find any mention of it anywhere online. When a shop from, say Japan, writes code, would I be able to read it in english? Or do languages, like C, php, anything, have Japanese translations that they write? I guess what i'm asking is does every single coder in the world know enough english to use the exact same reserved words I do? Would this code: If (i < size){ switch case 1: print "hi there" default: print "no, thank you" } else { print "yes, thank you" } display the exact same as I'm seeing it right now in english, or would some other non-english-speaking person see the words "if", "switch", "case", "default", "print", and "else" in their native language? EDIT - yes, this is serious. I didn't know if different localiztions of a language have different keywords. or if there are even different localizations at all.

  Hi everybody, I have a little (maybe the answer could require a book) question about web services and server side programming. But first, a little preamble. Recently we have seen new kind of applications & games using some kind of real-time interaction with a database, or more generally, with other users. I'm talking about shared drawing canvas, games like this , or simple chats, or the Android app "a World of Photo", where in real time you see who is online, to share your photos, etc. Now my question: Are all these apps based on classic TCP client/server architectures or is there a way to make them in a simpler way, like a web platform like LAMP? What I'm asking, in other words is: Can PHP+MySQL (or JSP, or RoR, or any other server language) provide a way to make online users communicate in real time and share data? Is there a way to do that without the ugly and heavy mechanism of temporary tables? Thank you! I hope I've been clear.

• What should the SQL keyword "ISABOUT" [deprecated?] be replaced with?

  In MS SQL Full-text search, I'm using ISABOUT in my queries. For example, this should return the top 10 ProductIDs (PK) with a RANK Field in the ProductDetails Table SELECT * FROM CONTAINSTABLE( ProductDetails, *, ISABOUT("Nikon" WEIGHT (1.0), "Cameras" Weight(0.9)), 10 ) However, according to the SQL Documentation ISABOUT is deprecated. So, I have two questions: What is ISABOUT being replaced with? DO I even NEED any extra SQL Command there? ( IOW, would just putting the search phrase 'Nikon Cameras' be better? ) What I was originally trying to accomplish here was to weight the first word the highest, then the second word lower, and keep descending to 0.5 where I would just rank the remaining words at 0.5. My logic ( and perhaps it's flawed ) was that people's most relevant search words usually happen near the beginning of a phrase ( in English ). Am I going about this the wrong way? Is there a better way? Am I asking too many questions? (^_^) Thanks all for your time...

• Selecting the App Pool for a web custom folder in a Web Setup Project (Visual Studio)

  I've got a Web Setup Project in VS2008 that is taking the files for two web applications and turning them into a single setup package. This works and I have got it asking for the user to select the application pool but the application pool is only being applied to the project sat in the Web Application Folder and not the one in the Web Custom Folder that I added for the second project. How do I force it to set both applications to the same app pool? Thanks in advance for any help on this it seems like it should be simple but I've been mucking round with it for ages to no avail.

The question was opened for the whole day, but when I got 3 reopens and edited my question for asking for 2 more reopens to reopen my question, somebody deleted my question. It was about efficiency during the programming. Why somebody deleted my question and didn't let to be it closed?   A friend has begged our consulting firm several times to build an iPhone app. We are reluctant to jeopardize the friendship and charge market rates. At the same time, we're so busy it would be imprudent not to charge fairly. We tried referring her to other shops, but she doesn't feel comfortable with anyone but us. How do people charge friends?   How can I find which processes have a specific file opened, and their open, access and share modes? Additionally, is it possible to change these values for a process? Or is it even possible to open a file for reading if it is already opened for exclusive access by another process? Please note that I don't want to invalidate the handle of the process having the file opened. I just want to be able to access the file (if possible).   Hello, does the Java Compiler optimize a statement like this if (a == true) { if (b == true) { if (c == true) { if(d == true) { //code to process stands here } } } } to if (a == true && b==true && c==true && d == true) So thats my first question: Do both take exactly the same "CPU Cycles" or is the first variant "slowlier". My Second questin is, is the first variant with the cascaded if considered bad programming style as it is so verbose? (I like the first variant as I can better logically group my expressions and better comment them (my if statements are more complex than in the example), but maybe thats bad proramming style?) and even slowlier, thats why I am asking...   I need to make a Java component that turns the background a certain colour when a process passed, and another colour when the process failed. My first thought was: green for success, red for failure. But then I read that 10% of males can't differentiate between these two colours. What would be a better combination of colours? (For the nitpickers: yes, I know that colour alone doesn't suffice, that text, shape, and noise can also be used. Nevertheless I am asking about the appropriate use of colour.)

• Accessing the feed/entry/id field of an ATOM 1.0 feed with the ROME library

  Hi, I feel a bit stupid asking this question, but I don't know how I can access the ID field of an entry when using ROME to parse an Atom feed. ROME provides it's own meta level of feeds/items, i.e. SyndFeed and SyndEntry. Being an abstraction over RSS and ATOM they only contain elements both formats support. Thus, there is no method to get an ID of an entry. There also exist low level packages for the distinct formats, and the Atom package contains com.sun.syndication.feed.atom.Entry, which provides getId(). However, I don't know how can I convert my SyndEntry into an Entry. I have not found a way to convert it. The (outdated) tutorials show a conversion, but that's only for output though. So how can I easily access the ID field? Thanks in advance.
