• What is the maximum number of virtualhosts Apache can handle?

  Hello. What is the maximum number of VirtualHosts Apache can handle on a single machine (I don't mean anything related to load, let's suppose it's irrelevant for the question). And we take only Apache without any proxifying things like nginx. I am asking because on one forum one guy reported that his Apache works unstable with the number of sites more than 400 on a single machine. If you have a config, that handles more than 400, please tell me here. Thanks.

  I've started digging around with using the Telerik Extensions for MVC. They don't integrate seemlessly into my current project, but I could reorganize things to fit it in. But, I'm wondering if it would be worth it in the end. I've been searching for reviews on the extensions, I haven't seen too many. So I'm asking here. On their website they claim: You can achieve unprecedented performance for your web application with the lightweight, semantically rendered Extensions that completely leverage the ASP.NET MVC model of no postbacks, no ViewState, and no page life cycle. So I'm curious, What is your opinion of the Telerik Extensions for MVC?

• Advice needed: What tech expertise do I need to accomplish my goal?

  I have a business plan & money to hire a developer - the essentials involve simple online games for children (played via traditional computer over the internet) such that their scores are uploaded to a database that can be viewed via a nice portal. What I don't know is: what technologies I would want my developer to know (the only somewhat unusual requirement I have is that the games have relatively accurate timing of keypresses/mouse presses) how much I should expect to pay (in general, what is the appropriate range) how many hours a program of the complexity of a simple tower defense -type game should take to develop (to be clear, the idea is not to implement TD, but rather other games of similar complexity) whether I should go with capable acquaintances, some online kind of online web-dev bidding site, or just try to find a capable undergraduate at the local university who I can wow with his/her first big paycheck, how I should communicate the software's specifications to my hired developer... Is there a standard I should be using? whether I should hire a webdev consultant for a few hours to help me answer these questions, instead of asking stackoverflow Thanks for any advice!

• Aging Data Structure in C#

  I want a data structure that will allow querying how many items in last X minutes. An item may just be a simple identifier or a more complex data structure, preferably the timestamp of the item will be in the item, rather than stored outside (as a hash or similar, wouldn't want to have problems with multiple items having same timestamp). So far it seems that with LINQ I could easily filter items with timestamp greater than a given time and aggregate a count. Though I'm hesitant to try to work .NET 3.5 specific stuff into my production environment yet. Are there any other suggestions for a similar data structure? The other part that I'm interested in is aging old data out, If I'm only going to be asking for counts of items less than 6 hours ago I would like anything older than that to be removed from my data structure because this may be a long-running program.

  I (and co-hackers) are building a sort of trivia game inspired by this blog post: http://messymatters.com/calibration. The idea is to give confidence intervals and learn how to be calibrated (when you're "90% sure" you should be right 90% of the time). We're thus looking for, ideally, thousands of questions with unambiguous numerical answers. Also, they shouldn't be too boring. There are a lot of random statistics out there -- eg, enclosed water area in different countries -- that would make the game mind-numbing. Things like release dates of classic movies are more interesting (to most people). Other interesting ones we've found include Olympic records, median incomes for different professions, dates of famous inventions, and celebrity ages.   Does anyone know if there is a way I can dynamically load and unload a TinyMCE plugin after TinyMCE has already been loaded? Specifically, I'm thinking about asking the user whether or not they wish to load the fullpage plugin using perhaps a radio button or something above TinyMCE: <input type="radio" name="fullpage" value="enabled" /> Enable Fullpage Plugin<br /> <input type="radio" name="fullpage" value="disabled" /> Disable Fullpage Plugin<br /> <textarea name="tinymce" id="tinymce">...</textarea> I suppose I could destroy the original instance and load a new config (one for enabled / one for disabled), but it seems as though there should be a more elegant way of loading and unloading plugins.

  Basically I'm using phpbb as a forum of the main site and for images there are captions and in the Control Panel of the forum I added a custom profile field asking if the user if he/she wants amusing or descriptive captions. • How can I set a counter column value in MySQL?

  I have a table with a "SortID" column that is numbered using consecutive numbers. Whenever a row is deleted, it leaves a gap. Is there a way using pure SQL to update the rows with their row number? Something like this: UPDATE tbl SET SortID={rowindex} ORDER BY SortID (I realize this isn't valid SQL, that's why I'm asking for help) This should set the first row to #1, the second row to #2... etc. Is this possible using SQL? Please forgive the poorly worded question, I'm not really sure the best way to ask this. :)

• Speech Recognition Server Does Not Stay Open

  I am trying to create a simple program that loops for user speech input using com.apple.speech.recognitionserver. My code thus far is as follows: set user_response to "start" repeat while user_response is not equal to "Exit" tell application id "com.apple.speech.recognitionserver" set user_response to listen for {"Time", "Weather", "Exit"} with prompt "Good Morning" end tell if user_response = "Time" then set curr_time to time string of (the current date) set curr_day to weekday of (the current date) say "It is" say curr_time say "on" say curr_day say "day" else if user_response = "Weather" then say "It is hot outside. What do you expect?" end if end repeat say "Have a good day" If the above is run on my system it says good morning and it then pops up with the speech input system and waits for either Time, Weather, or Exit. They all do what they say they are going to do, but instead of looping if I say Time and Weather and asking again until I say exit the speechserver times out and never pops up again. Is there a way of either keeping that application open until the program ends or is applescript not capable of looping for user speech input?

  Hi, I am trying to create an array with different href's to then attach to 5 separate elements. This is my code: var link = new Array('link1', 'link2', 'link3', 'link4', 'link5'); $(document.createElement("li")) .attr('class',options.numericId + (i+1)) .html('<a rel='+ i +' href=\"page.php# + 'link'\">'+ '</a>') .appendTo($("."+ options.numericId)) As you can see I am trying to append these items from the array to the end of my page so each link will take the user to a different section of the page. But i have not been able to do this. Is there a way to to create elements with different links? I am new to javascript so I am sorry if this doesn't make a whole lot of sense. • JQuery plugin to animate overlay

  I'm looking for a JQuery plugin to animate the appearance and disappearance of an overlay div. Something like what Rackspace has here: http://www.rackspacecloud.com/ After staring at the page for 30 seconds or so, a div comes sliding down from the top asking you whether you want to chat with a rep. If you ignore the div for a period of time it slides back up. I know I could hand code all this using timers and animate() and such, but hoping someone has done it for us already. Any ideas?

• GnuPG Shell Script - Refuses to read password

  The script below used to work on Mac OS X, but, since moving it to Ubuntu, it doesn't seem to read from the password file at all. Even when I run it from the command line, no matter what I do, I get a popup prompt asking me for the password. As this will run via cron, I don't want this to happen... I want it to read the password from the file with no prompt. • Paypal IPN setup...Ship to Zipcode and auto calculation

  Hi I have successfully setup paypal IPN on my site and its working fine. From my paypal account I have set options to ass shipping and tax calculations(only if it's Iowa). But the only issue is, on the paypal checkout page it's asking me to enter the "Ship to Zipcode" manually...if I enter and update only then the net payable is getting updated with the shipping and tax charges. Is there any variable via which I could send the ship to zip code which will work directly on the cart and make it auto calculate the charges and show it? I have tried both "zip" and "address_zip" variables. None of them worked. By the way I have multiple items on my cart so I am using the "cart" transaction type. Thanks in advance for your help.

  It isn't so interesting to find out what this text editor here or that IRC client there was programmed with, also it isn't really hard and neither are there really suprising things to come out. Wow so it was programmed in Python, I didn't expect that. What I'm asking is: What are the things that we daily see, use or generally need programmed with? To name a few (really only a few of those out there): My alarm clock It has many features so it would probably be hard programming it with assembler or whatever, so did they probably use a programming language? If yes, which? My electrical tooth brush The (stupid) board computer of my car. (6 years old, has few features but a red LED display showing me how cold/warm it is outside and how much gas I'm using up per hour at the moment) Those (old) plastic mini-mini computers with the LCD(?) displays that only had one game available on them: PacMan, tetris or so. Should the characters be replaced for their corresponding named entities (e.g. &aacute;, etc)? Should the doc type and the xml:lang attribute be set to English? I know I can check the W3C recommendation but I am asking more from a practical point of view.

• Python: Plot some data (matplotlib) without GIL

  Hello all, my problem is the GIL of course. While I'm analysing data it would be nice to present some plots in between (so it's not too boring waiting for results) But the GIL prevents this (and this is bringing me to the point of asking myself if Python was such a good idea in the first place). I can only display the plot, wait till the user closes it and commence calculations after that. A waste of time obviously. I already tried the subprocess and multiprocessing modules but can't seem to get them to work. Any thoughts on this one? Thanks

• HLSL: Enforce Constant Register Limit at Compile Time

  In HLSL, is there any way to limit the number of constant registers that the compiler uses? Specifically, if I have something like: float4 foobar[300]; In a vs_2_0 vertex shader, the compiler will merrily generate the effect with more than 256 constant registers. But a 2.0 vertex shader is only guaranteed to have access to 256 constant registers, so when I try to use the effect, it fails in an obscure and GPU-dependent way at runtime. I would much rather have it fail at compile time. This problem is especially annoying as the compiler itself allocates constant registers behind the scenes, on top of the ones I am asking for. I have to check the assembly to see if I'm over the limit. Ideally I'd like to do this in HLSL (I'm using the XNA content pipeline), but if there's a flag that can be passed to the compiler that would also be interesting.

• Oracle: '= ANY()' vs. 'IN ()'

  Hi all, I just stumbled upon something in ORACLE SQL (not sure if it's in others), that I am curious about. I am asking here as a wiki, since it's hard to try to search symbols in google... I just found that when checking a value against a set of values you can do WHERE x = ANY (a, b, c) As opposed to the usual WHERE x IN (a, b, c) So I'm curious, what is the reasoning for these two syntaxes? Is one standard and one some oddball Oracle syntax? Or are they both standard? And is there a preference of one over the other for performance reasons, or ? Just curious what anyone can tell me about that '= ANY' syntax. CheerZ!

• IE 8 Errors for Group Permissions for access

  Hello, The company I work for is about to begin testing for a transition from IE6 to IE8. One of our main concerns is about using permissions to control intranet access to internal sites,etc. This was a problem we encountered during testing for IE7 and scrapped it all together. However, IE6 has more than its foot in the grave, its head is peeking out. Microsoft is only supporting IE6 until 2014 when they also abandon support for Windows XP. IE7 just came up with a box asking for you to enter your credentials. It didn't matter if you had permissions, it always said access denied. We have yet to begin testing but I was hoping someone has encountered this issue as well and may be able to shed some light on the subject.

• JavaScript: Change to Absolute Positioning

  I'm trying to center a page on any resolution while still being able to use absolute positioning to move pictures. I figure that the best way would be to have a table positioned relatively in the beginning in the center of the page, then change it to absolute positioning in the onload of the page. I think the correct line is: document.getElementById("Object").style.position = "absolute"; However, I put an alert box after it asking where the left side of the object is, I get undefined. But, if I directly assign it to a position (Object.style.left = 500) I will get that number. So I can assign it a value, meaning it is in absolute position, but I cannot pull a value out of that. Kind of confusing but hopefully it makes sense and someone knows what to do. Thanks.

• How to deal with presence or not of xml namespaces using xslt.

  I have some XML/TEI documents, and i'm writing an XSLT 2.0 to extract their content. Almost all TEI documents has no namespace, but one has the default namespace (xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"). So all documents has the same aspect, with unqulified tags like <TEI> or <teiHeader>, but if I try to extract the content, all works with "non-namespaced-documents", but nothing (of course) is extracted from the namespaced-document. So i used the attribute xpath-default-namespace="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" and now (of course) the only document working is the namespaced one. I can't edit documents at all, so what I'm asking is if there's a way to change dynamically the xpath-default-namespace in order to make work xpaths like //teiHeader both with namespaced and non-namespaced documents

• What's the difference between the 'DES' class and The 'DESCryptoServiceProvider' class?

  All I can make out is that one of them is the BC for all 'DES' algorithms to be derived from and the later is a wrapper for the Cryptographic service provider implementation of the DES algorithm. The reason why I ask is that I am going over .Net Security and the MS official training book simply refers to the DES class but the another official MS book refers to the DESCrypto' class. What's the difference between these two? When would you use either of them? What do I need to know as far as the 70-536 exam is concerned.
