• Why is writing a compiler in a functional language easier?

  Hello all, I've been thinking of this question very long, but really couldn't find the answer on Google as well a similar question on Stackoverflow. If there is a duplicate, I'm sorry for that. A lot of people seem to say that writing compilers and other language tools in functional languages such as OCaml and Haskell is much more efficient and easier then writing them in imperative languages. Is this true? And if so -- why is it so efficient and easy to write them in functional languages instead of in an imperative language, like C? Also -- isn't a language tool in a functional language slower then in some low-level language like C? Thanks in advance, William v. Doorn

• python processs complete list files matched

  Hi All, I'm trying to get a simple code working, unfortunatly im a python beginner. • PHP - white screen of death!

  Hi everyone, After debugging a codeigniter app that were installed into a new development environment, I have started to freak out when seeing white screens with nothing more available. I have been able to solve each and every one of the errors that have caused this, but it have taken seriously way too long time. PHP error_reporting(E_ALL) & display_errors", 1 is set as well. I even installed Xdebug in hope of getting more output, but no. My logging settings are also working, but nothing is written to the log. Is there a way to get something informative printed out instead of a complete white screen? It would certainly shorten my time spent on solving the eventual errors that causes this? Thanks a lot! Since Process 1 read value of d['blah'] saves it on the stack increments it and again writes it. In Between a Process 2 can read the d['blah'] as well. Locking means that while d['blah'] is being written or read no other process can access it. Can someone clarify my doubts?

  I'm running Ruby 2.0.0 and I installed it correctly. Just loaded up a gem 'devise' and as I tried to migrate my database changes, it wouldn't work: $ rake db:migrate rake aborted! attr_accessible is extracted out of Rails into a gem. Please use new recommended protection model for params(strong_parameters) or add protected_attributes to your Gemfile to use old one. Then, following another Stackoverflow post, they recommended installing Bundler. • What is the response on a REST call where a field is not valid?

  There are many questions on StackOverflow about this, but no definitive answer. I have a REST resource where an entity's field, ProductId, is sent. If the ProductId passed is invalid, what kind of response would you do? I want to send the right response code plus information to the requester on what they can do to fix it. Initial thoughts were 422 with the body containing the list of errors in JSON/XML format. Maybe like this (JSON): [ { FieldName : "ProductId", ErrorCode : "M123", Description : "Product Not Found" }, { FieldName : "Quantity", ErrorCode : "Q001", Description : "Quantity cannot be more than 100" } ] Thoughts?

• Python unittest with expensive setup

  My test file is basically: class Test(unittest.TestCase): def testOk(): pass if __name__ == "__main__": expensiveSetup() try: unittest.main() finally: cleanUp() However, I do wish to run my test through Netbeans testing tools, and to do that I need unittests that don't rely on an environment setup done in main. Looking at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/402483/caching-result-of-setup-using-python-unittest - it recommends using Nose. However, I don't think Netbeans supports this. I didn't find any information indicating that it does. Additionally, I am the only one here actually writing tests, so I don't want to introduce additional dependencies for the other 2 developers unless they are needed. How can I do the setup and cleanup once for all the tests in my TestSuite? The expensive setup here is creating some files with dummy data, as well as setting up and tearing down a simple xml-rpc server. I also have 2 test classes, one testing locally and one testing all methods over xml-rpc.

• Why is PHP date() adding +1 hour in diff calculation?

  Hi there, I've got kind of a tricky question, I already searched every related question on Stackoverflow and neither solved my conundrum, although I think I'm running in circles, so here's the question: I've got this code: $val = (strtotime('2010-03-22 10:05:00')-strtotime('2010-03-22 09:00:00')) This returns correctly $val = 3900 (3600 seconds = 1 hour, 300 seconds = 5 mins) But doing this: echo date("H:i",$val)."<br>"; returns 02:05 even doing this: echo date("H:i",3900)."<br>"; returns 02:05 (just to be naively sure) Doing this: echo date("H:i eTO",3900)."<br>"; returns 02:05 System/LocaltimeCET+0100 Which is correct, my timezone is CET and is +1. What's going on? Is date() correcting the timezone for some reason? Or am I doing anything wrong?

I may have something like this: List<BaseClass> list = new List<BaseClass>() { new Class1(1), new Class2(1), new Class1(2), new Class3(1), new Class2(2), new Class4(1), new Class3(2) }; I am trying to use LINQ to semi-sort the list so that the natural order is maintained EXCEPT for certain classes which have base.GroupThisType == true. All classes with GroupThisType should be grouped together at the place that the first class of the same type occurs. I added ctags to it and I am able to navigate now comfortably. Only problem left for me is "Debugging"? I tried searching for some links, and couldn't a useful one? • How Likely Is It That I'll Get Sued Developing Software?

  It has been a practically unanimous truth on StackOverflow that if you work as an independent consultant, you should probably form a corporation (as seen here), to limit personal liability, supposedly to protect you in case of lawsuit. It seems to me that developing software does not result in many lawsuits, but this is an empirical (objective [and not community wiki]) question: How likely is it that a lone software developer will be sued? Also, by whom (a disgruntled company, coworker)? Since incorporating is basically taking out insurance, the likelihood of catastrophe needs to be taken into account. Also, aren't there standard laws covering, for example, total screw-ups with corporate data that mean that protect the lone cowboy/girl/person/coder?

  How do YOU debug a Scala program? I mean YOU as in the person posting the Answer :) Please answer only from personal experience, not from stuff you've heard or read on the Internet. You should not believe everything you read on the Internet, especially tales of complex open-source software configurations that actually work :-) The are many Java tools which claim to support Scala in some way or another, but I have so far struck out in trying to get any one of them to actually let me set a breakpoint in Scala code and step through it. These are big, major open-source IDEs I'm talking about here. The main problem in getting a debugger to work seems to be the "version hell" with fast-changing IDEs, Plug-Ins, JDKs, and the Scala language itself. Hence, the more detailed re-statement of the question is appropriate: What is the exact version number of the IDE, Plug-In, JDK, Scala, and even Operating System, that you are successfully using?   Hello stackoverflow, I'm currently in Python land. This is what I need to do. I have already looked into the itertools library but it seems to only do permutations. I want to take an input list, like ['yahoo', 'wikipedia', 'freebase'] and generate every unique combination of one item with zero or more other items... Example: If I do a call to ItemLookup with an ASIN of 0590353403 (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone), I'm looking for a result set of perhaps the top ten new or used Marketplace listings, preferably with seller information attached.   I've begun watching a series of first year lectures from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia, and I'm a bit perplexed by the instructors explanation of how an SRAM gate works. I realize this isn't exactly "programming-related" but since it comes from a series of lectures relating to computing and programming, I thought StackOverflow may be able to help (reddit failed me entirely). In this lecture beginning at around 32:12, Richard (the lecturer) tries to explain how a "latch gate" works within SRAM. Although his students seem to keep up, I feel I'm missing something crucial which is preventing the concept from really "clicking" in my brain. However, no callback is registered through the ApplicationListener events I setup in java. I used the code listed in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1460193/set-default-file-association-mac-os-x-java-package-maker-installer to do the file association, and the file association itself appears fine, but it seems as if it is the application stub trying to launch the file, and thus fails. I added the Apple ApplicatinListener code to my java application at (similar to http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Java/Reference/1.5.0/appledoc/api/index.html?com/apple/eawt/Application.html) but it doesn't seem like my application ever gets a call back. the code is similar to Application.getApplicatin().addApplicationListener( new ApplicationAdapter() { public void handleOpenFile(ApplicationEvent evt) { //some logging message here that I never get} }); Any help would be appreciated

• How can we store password other than plain text?

  I've found numerous posts on stackoverflow on how to store user passwords. However, I need to know what is the best way to store a password that my application needs to communicate with another application via the web? Currently, our web app needs to transmit data to a remote website. To upload the data, our web app reads the password from a text file and creates the header with payloads and submits via https. This password in plain text on the file system is the issue. Is there any way to store the password more securely? Thanks!

  Hi StackOverflow, I have a Java application that makes heavy use of a large file, to read, process and give through to SolrEmbeddedServer (http://lucene.apache.org/solr/). One of the functions does basic HTML escaping: private String htmlEscape(String input) { return input.replace("&", "&amp;").replace(">", "&gt;").replace("<", "&lt;") .replace("'", "&apos;").replaceAll("\"", "&quot;"); } While profiling the application, the program spends roughly 58% of the time in this function, a total of 47% in replace, and 11% in replaceAll. Now, is the Java replace that slow, or am I on the right path and should I consider the program efficient enough to have its bottleneck in Java and not in my code? (Or am I replacing wrong?)
