  • Digital audio input on Macbook?

    I have: a Macbook (not Pro), don't know the exact model but it's a Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz and probably what Wikipedia calls the "Late 2006" or "Mid 2007" model a DVD player, region-free, that has "Coax and TosLink optical digital audio outputs" I want to make an MP3 of the audio track of some DVDs (for learning a new language), and I can't use the Macbook's built-in DVD drive because it's a different region (ugh!). I'm sure I can connect the DVD player to the Macbook with an analog audio cable. However, if it's possible I'd prefer to keep the signal digital. I'm not even positive if my old Macbook has digital audio in, and if so what I need to connect to it. (I've done plenty of home audio geeking, but always in analog!) Will a "Toslink cable" plus a "Toslink Female to Mini-Plug Male Adapter" (found on Amazon) let me connect my things together? It looks like the pieces will fit but I'd like to hear someone confidently knowledgeable on the matter before I buy something. Thanks!

  • No input file specified on nginx and php-cgi

    I'm trying to run nginx and php-cgi on my Windows PC, I've got up to the point where I want to move the html directory back two directory's so I can sort of create a structure. The only problem I have now is that PHP doesn't pick up any .php file. I have tried loading a static html file (localhost/test.html) and it works fine but localhost/info.php doesn't work at all. Can anyone give me some guidance on this?   • WinXP keyboard input repeat rate problem

    I have problem similar to http://superuser.com/questions/33981/problems-with-kvm-switch-and-keyboard-repeat-rate-on-windows-xp: When I press and hold some key it's repeated random number of times, after that repeat stops and I need to release key and press it again to make repeat continue. If there's simultaneous sound playback and repeat is stopped, sound's stuck while I hold key with unpleasant drumming as if there's some audio problem. This issue is reproducible in WinXP Safe Mode. On the same config under Linux there's no issue. My config: List item PS/2 Logitech Keyboard USB Mouse MB M3A/H-HDMI WinXP Pro English SP2 with added Russian layout (WinXP loads via GRUB2) Realtek audio drivers for AC97 Thanks for your suggestions J

  • Input devices stopped working during system upgrade

    Hi, I was upgrading Ubuntu on my server (but Ubuntu is in desktop version) when mouse and keyboard stopped working :( So the screen went black (screensaver), and now I can't do anything. I don't know what stage of upgrade it stopped working, probably now it waits for me to answer some question. Keyboard and mouse were connected by KVM, connecting them directly doesn't help. Both are on USB. What I can do, is connecting to the machine by ssh. Can I somehow see and answer questions of update system and somehow finalize process of upgrade?

  • Using Toshiba 22EL833 as PC display through HDMI input

    I had another Toshiba TV - 19SL738 - connected to this same PC and video card (GTX 8800) through DVI<-HDMI (DVI on PC side, HDMI on TV) before, that was working perfectly at it's native resolution 1360x768. Some time ago I had to change to 22EL833 and immediately faced problem with Windows 7 control panel and NVIDIA control panel both reporting native resolution for new TV as 1080i, 1920x1280, despite TV documentation saying that it have same 1360x768 as previous one. Practical tests confirmed that true native resolution is indeed 1360x768, because plugging in through DVI<-VGA and setting custom resolution through NVIDIA panel shown clear colors and crisp image, while setting anything different with either DVI<-VGA or DVI<-HDMI produced horribly distorted or squished images, with almost unreadable slim lines (as in letters, for example). Now, my problem is that there's no drivers for this TV and I'm unable to get good image while connecting it through DVI<-HDMI directly. The best I've achieved is editing EDID/driver manually, to persuade system that native resolution should be 1360x768, and while image became mostly clear, colors turned to some strange washed out effect, with pools of pure yellow, cyan and magenta there and there filling place of other colors. Gradients also became noticeably stripped as well. Somehow it looks like dithering gone bad and makes me suspect that image is still down/upscaled several times internally somewhere along the line. How can I connect this TV to DVI output of my video card to get best possible clear image, correct colors and correct native resolution?

  • Windows apps keep switching to accented text

    Somehow I keep hitting a shortcut key (or something similar) that enables the input of accented text. Whenever this accented text mode is enabled, pressing ' doesn't respond immediately; instead, the ' key is remembered, so if I press a vowel after that, I get the vowel with an acute accent mark, and if I press any other key, I immediately get an apostrophe followed by the other key. I don't want this to happen. It's very annoying. How do I disable this mode? I only remember seeing this in Firefox 3.6.3 and Pidgin 2.6.6, so maybe it's a GTK feature. It apparently happens on a per-application basis, and restarting the application fixes it. I checked Windows 7's "Region and Language" control panel and didn't see anything relevant (although I'm not intimately familiar with all of those settings, so I may have overlooked something).

  • Graphics Tablet as input device for Windows 8

    Having used Windows 8 (and 8.1) on a touch screen I know how much better it is than with a mouse. I've seen people with graphics tables on 7 use them to scroll their browser etc... so I was wondering if I could use one as a touch screen for windows? and if did would the 8 features of swipe in from the sides etc... work properly? Just incase brand is an issue in this I was looking at getting a Wacom.

So I just purchased a monitor and plugged it in, and put the HD inside and connected the two connections (Bus, and a four pronged connector) and no signal is being sent to monitor. is this a monitor issue or the HD is just dead? HD is spinning. CPU is turned on :) Yet no signal.. any thoughts?

    So. I currently have a steering wheel connected to my htpc. Since it wont work / get recognized by all games i play. I use xpadder to play for example Grid 3. As far as i have understood, it simply presses the associated arrow key when i turn the wheel. What i would like, is a software to simulate more and more frequent key presses of the arrow keys the more i turn the wheel. Example: Tilting a little - 100 presses / second Tilting more - 200 presses / second Tilting max - Hold down key Because what i currently do with the wheel is constantly shaking it a bit right, when i just want to turn a little bit right and so on.     I am trying to create a karaoke from a CD+G file (converted to AVI using FFmpeg) and add a video as a background of the lyrics. I haven't used FFmpeg much and I'm not really sure if what I want to achieve is possible with FFmpeg. Is it possible to overlay two videos, and add a transparency to one of the videos? In this case the colour black? How can I set the offset time of the lyrics.avi?   • Software for capturing still image snapshots from video input

    What software is available that will let me watch video from a USB video capture device at full PAL/NTSC resolution and capture a still image at a button press? More info: I'm using a KaiserBaas USB capture device (http://www.kaiserbaas.com/kaiser-baas-product-page/converters/video-to-dvd-maker), and want to capture screen shots from a PS2 connected to it. I'd like to play the game at the full PS2 resolution and capture certain scenes. The device has a one-touch snapshot button on it, but I can't seem to make it work and there's no mention of it anywhere in the documentation. The device works and the video appears in Power Producer (the included software), but I think it previews it smaller than the full resolution. I could print screen it, but having to crop will be a pain.

    I'm trying to record analogue stereo sound with my MacBookAir. The external mic is plugged to the headphones jack, but it is not being shown in the System Preferences. I did a little bit of research, and there is some rumor, that the headphone jack only supports digital-in for mics. Is there a built-in way to use the analogue stereo sound without purchasing an external converter or a new mic? With my old MacBook 2,1 it was usual for me to do this, but with my new MacBook Air 4,1 it seems to be a tough task.

  • Input field separator in awk

    I have many large data files. The delimiter between the fields is a semicolon. However, I have found that there are semicolons in some of the fields, so I cannot simply use the semicolon as a field separator. The following example has 4 fields, but awk sees only 3, because the '1' in field 3 is stripped by the regex (which includes a '-' because some of the numerical data are negative): echo '"This";"is";1;"line of; data"' | awk -F'[0-9"-];[0-9"-]' '{print "No. of fields:\t"NF; print "Field 3:\t" $3}' No. of fields: 3 Field 3: ;"line of; data" Of course, echo '"This";"is";1;"line of; data"' | awk -F';' '{print "No. of fields:\t"NF}' No. of fields: 5 solves that problem, but counts the last field as two separate fields.   • Text template or tool for documentation of computer configurations

    I regularly write and update technical documentation which will be used to set up a new virtual machine, or to have a lookup for system dependencies in networks with around 20-50 (server-side) computers. At the moment I use OpenOffice Writer with text tables, and create one document per intranet domain. To improve this documentation, I would like to collect some examples to identify areas where my documents can be improved, regarding general structure and content, to make it easy to read and use not only for me but also for technical staff, helpdesk etc. Are there simple text templates (for example for OpenOffice Writer) or tools (maybe database-driven) for structured documentation of a computer configuration? Such a template / tool should provide required and optional configuration sections, like 'operating system', 'installed services', 'mapped network drives', 'scheduled tasks', 'remote servers', 'logon user account', 'firewall settings', 'hard disk size' ... It is not so much low-level hardware docs but more infrastructure / integration information in these documents (no BIOS settings, MAC addresses).

  • Using awk to split text file every 10,000 lines

    I have a large gzip'd text file. I'd like to something like: zcat BIGFILE.GZ | awk (snag 10,000 lines and redirect to...)|gzip -9 smallerPartFile.gz the awk part up there, I basically want it to take 10,000 lines and send it to gzip and then repeat until all lines in the original input file are consumed. I found a script that claims to do this, but when I run it on my files and then diff the original to the ones that were split and then merged, lines are missing. So, something is wrong with the awk part and I'm not sure what part is broken. Here's the code.     I am editing a 96 chapter book. The text is in normal black letters on a white background. What I want to be able to do is: I want to have any changes or additions automatically shown in another (per-selected) color. Without having to a)high lite a word or phrase to be changed or added and then b)going to the toolbar and clicking on the font color In other words I want the original color of the text to remain as it is and any additions or changes to be visible in another color without having to use the toolbar. Can this be done? I use OpenOffice or Word 2007 in Windows 7.

  • Text on Cisco ASA console is garbled/missing letters

    I've actually looked up a number of solutions for this problem and none of them work. There's this Cisco ASA 5505 that I'd like to use, that outputs mildly garbled text with missing characters. I did some googling and found that the most likely problem is a bad baud rate, so I tried all the baud rates, 7N1, 8N2... basically every possibility minicom had. Then I figured (since I can type ok, just not read) that if I factory reset it that it would fix whatever is set wrong with the terminal. That didn't work either. This usb-db9 adapter and console cable work fine on the catalyst switch in our office. My serial settings are 9600 8N1 with no flow control. Anyone know how to fix this?   • Converting PDF portfolios to plain text (pdftotext?)

    I am trying to convert a large number of PDFs (~15000) to plain text using pdftotext. This is working pretty well except for a few of the PDFs (~600) which, I guess, are "PDF portfolios." When I run these PDFs through pdftotext, it just outputs: For the best experience, open this PDF portfolio in Acrobat 9 or Adobe Reader 9, or later. Get Adobe Reader Now! If I do open these PDFs in Adobe Reader, they look like two or more PDFs inside a single file. Has anyone encountered this issue before? Is there any tool I can use to convert these PDFs automatically? (Either directly to text or at least to regular PDFs that pdftotext can then understand.)
