• GTK applications do not start

  Hello, I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 Server on nodes of a computational cluster, and I access the nodes via ssh. I configured a X server, which I start with the command startx -- -ac. The server is running fine on port :0. Then, I set the environment variable DISPLAY to :0. Now, when I run a GTK application on the node, it fails with the following error: Error: Unable to initialize gtk, is DISPLAY set properly? Now, my question is, is there any runtime library that I need for running GTK applications on top of a X server? I'm probably missing something obvious here, but I can't tell what :P

• Google Maps in .NET Problem

  Hello, I've been struggling with Google maps till I found that someone implemented a wrapper so that you can use Google Map as an ASP.Net user control which is a great effort indeed. You can download it from this link. However, after using it for a while, I've found out that it is storing the Google map object only once in the session and getting it from there whenever needed which was a problem for me that when you update the map in some page, you'll find it updated on another page. So, I've digged deep in the code and updated it so that it stores the map object with a unique identifier that you set it as a property in the user control object like that: this.googleMapCtrl.ControlID = Guid.NewGuid().ToString(); You can download the updated control files from here. • Unable to enumerate USB device

  Hello, My syslog is constantly filled with messages like this: Oct 16 11:48:35 my-laptop kernel: [61470.980078] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2 Oct 16 11:48:35 my-laptop kernel: [61471.192079] hub 3-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2 The only USB device I use is Microsoft Natural Wireless Laser Mouse 7000. The laptop model is HP dv9500, Ubuntu 10.10, but the same was in the versions before. How can I fix this?   Hello to the gaming community. I am a budding game designer, learning to code for the first time in my life. I did learned c++ in school, 8 years back, so I sort of understand the logic when people are doing coding and I can suggest them the right route also, but to an extent I can't code. I am beginning to learn coding for Unity 3D. Which one do you suggest is more versatile and easier to work on for future, because I am a game designer not a coder, I would do coding until I don't have anyone else to code for me. It should be easy and fast to learn, functional and universal to apply, and innovative at the same time. C# or JavaScript ? • Resources on expected behaviour when manipulating 3D objects with the mouse

  Hello, In my animation editor, I have a 3D gizmo that sits on the origin of a bone; the user drags the mesh around to rotate the bone. I've found that translating the 2D movements of the mouse into sensible 3D transforms is not near as simple as i'd hoped. For example what is intuitively 'up' or 'down'? How should the magnitude of rotations change with respect to dX/dY? How to implement this? What happens when the gizmo changes position or orientation with respect to the camera? ect. So far with trial and error i've written something (very) simple that works 70% of the time. I could probably continue to hack at it until I made something that works 99% of the time, but there must be someone who needed the same thing, and spent the time coming up with a much more elegant solution. Does anyone know of one?

• Installing MoinMoin -wiki to my user directory on a server with no root access

  Hello all, I've been trying to install MoinMoin -wiki on this webserver, where I have no root access. The server doesn't support wsgi, but it does support cgi/fcgi/etc. I've scoured google for a simple guide on how to accomplish this, but the only guides I found were from the year 2004 or so. Other guides always assumed that one has root access. So can anyone link a good tutorial for my question or just help me out here? Your help is appreciated :) P.S.   I'm just now moving from a beginner to intermediate level android programmer in the java language. i can successfully write a game framework of classes that work together to accomplish a task beyond basic things, like hello world. but i'm having issues with some pretty basic OOP concepts; When should i derive from an abstract class? When is it more efficient to use an Interface instead of simply sub classing a parent? Basically, between extends, implements, and the abstract keywords, which keywords should be used instead of the others? i'm not looking for a basic definition, as i know them. i need to no when and why i should apply them to my code? what advantages does one have over the other? which is best for game development?

• Multiple domain names with pages linking to one website

  Hello, I work for a company who have been redesigning their company website. I have been asked to register loads of domain names that contain the keywords that they want to use on the original site. Each of these domain names will contain a one page website with a destription of what the company offers and a link saying something along the lines of 'click here for more infmormation' which then takes you to the main site. The idea being the main site will then be recieving a lot of inbound links and hopefully rise in the google rankings, not to mention bring in more customers who have come to the site from all the other domain names who wouldn't have normally got to the website because it wasn't ranked on the first page. Is this a good idea or will Google see this as spam and penalise the main site for having loads of links to it from one page websites hosted on the same nameserver? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark.

  The latest promoted build of GlassFish 4.0 (glassfish-4.0-b43.zip) now contains upgraded Jersey version, 2.0-m05. Users are getting an early access to the implementation of some parts of the JAX-RS 2.0 API Early Draft Review 3. The appropriate JAX-RS bundle, version 2.0-m09 , gets bundled into GlassFish 4.0 as well. What should work The simple answer is: all the basic stuff. We have particularly tested the following two examples: simple hello world webapp multipart webapp Both above linked archives contain adjusted projects, so that resulting war files do not bundle any Jersey dependencies. Both also use Jersey 2 specific Servlet class, org.glassfish.jersey.servlet.ServletContainer, for deployment. • Remote connection problem.

  Hello I have ubuntu 10.04 installed with mysql on it and I have a problem with remote connection. When I connect through putty it works but sometimes it looks like it hangs for example when I execute the command ln --help. Also with MySQL connection When I execute a simple query like show processlist; it works, but for example select * from table not always, if the table doesn't have many rows it works but if it has let's say more than 20 the query looks like it keeps working and never ends. It's connected but I can't do many things remotely. Added: I connect using putty from other windows pc, server is not overloaded. when i work at the same time directly on ubuntu i can do everything. Remotely not.

• Getting vga_switcheroo with ATI Mobility Radeon 5650 HD to work

  Hello! I have a new HP dv7 laptop with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics card, and also Intel graphics (switchable). I have done the following and want to understand what is going on with my graphics driver Resized windows 7 and did fresh install of 10.10 Booted into 10.10 and things seemed to be working okay Enabled ATI graphics, and was clearly working on the ATI rather than Intel GPU (desktop cube worked) Rebooted, got an error that modprobe could not load modules.dep, and also something about i915 symbols Rebooted into recovery mode, modified xorg.conf to remove the mention of fglrx Rebooted, and the errors show, but then x starts but clearly in intel graphics I would ideally like to be able to switch between the ATI and Intel graphics, a la vga_switcheroo. My first problem seems to be that the folder /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo does not exist, hinting at some kind of kernel issue. What can I do to get this available? Thanks!

(console applications in C++) I want to find a summer job/internship that would help me build my skill set. Being that I am still such a beginner pay is not a concern, minimum wage would be nice, but as long as I am learning, I really don't care. • The practical cost of swapping effects

  Hello, I use XNA for my projects and on those forums I sometimes see references to the fact that swapping an effect for a mesh has a relatively high cost, which surprises me as I thought to swap an effect was simply a case of copying the replacement shader program to the GPU along with appropriate parameters. I wondered if someone could explain exactly what is costly about this process? And put, if possible, 'relatively' into context? For example say I wanted to use a short shader to help with picking, I would: Change the effect on every object, calculting a unique color to identify it and providing it to the shader. Draw all the objects to a render target in memory. Get the color from the target and use it to look up the selected object. What portion of the total time taken to complete that process would be spent swapping the shaders? My instincts would say that rendering the scene again, no matter how simple the shader, would be an order of magnitude slower than any other part of the process so why all the concern over effects?

  Hello, I've started doing some research on the technologies that I will need for my website. I'm trying to implement a really simple website with OpenID user registration. The website will store a block of text for each user. I imagine this means that I will need a database with: User ID Open ID url Data Having said that, I'm still having trouble deciding what I really need to do this. I know that I will need the following for the actual site: Javascript JQuery CSS But on the back end, I'm kind of lost at the moment. I've been looking at the OpenID-Selector, which is coded in Javascript. It seems like it's exactly what is used on this site. Will I actually need PHP? MySQL for the data and user registration? • Moonlight stopped working on tvp.pl

  Hello, I'm watching The Bold and the beautiful on the site: http://www.tvp.pl/seriale/obyczajowe/moda-na-sukces/wideo Yesterday I wanted to view next episode, however it didn't work. I checked various episodes from other points in time and none works. The "dots" that appear when a Silverlight video is loading are present, but after them there is only black screen (of death). I'm using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 32 bit with GNOME2 and firefox 3.6. I have all updates done. Could somebody check if any video is working for them and tell me their setup, please? I'm using Moonlight 3. Two days ago everything was fine but later this problem appeared.

• Regain Sudo rights after removing from admin group

  Hello, I accidentally removed myself from the admin group when editing the user. Now I can no longer use sudo. The error says: ber is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported. I booted up in rescue mode, but, when going into root prompt, it asks me for the root password. I don't have one, and providing with my own (first and only ubuntu-user) password, it won't allow entrance. My harddisk is encrypted, but only the /home/user part, not the entire disk, afaik. What can I do?

• Will using two different tracking codes affect my SERP

  Hello everyone and thanks for your time! I am now facing a problem after a site migration. New site is basically an improved version of old site, with the same content and some extras. After pointing the domain name to the new site, the old site was still online for a while but didn't get any traffic. The new site has its own tracking code. So, old tracking code has age (something like 7 years) but no visitors for a month, but new tracking code is a month old with an acceptable traffic. How to you think google will react if I add old tracking code to new site? Thanks by advance!

• Why should I adopt MVC?

  I decided to get my hands wet and got the YII framework for PHP. I created my first application, then created new controller, model and view. Connected to database, got my record passed from controller to the view and printed the hello world. I am confused now. If I have to do the same thing for each page, this seems like a nightmare to me. In each controller I have to do a lot of same operations - declare variables, and pass them to views. I also need to create models for each page and this is all confusing to me. In my idea the main goal of development is to avoid duplication, but what I see here is lots and lots of duplicated code. Please advise and clarify. Maybe you could suggest a good reading about MVC and coding patterns and best practices in MVC. Because so far, it takes much more time to create a small site using MVC than using my own programming schema.

• What to do with random pages after a 301 redirect?

  Hello, I did a standard 301 redirect for a domain, but the original domain has about 300 pages that have some strength. It doesn't make sense to make them all point back to the new home page because the individual pages are about some topics. Also, there aren't the same pages in the new domain, so where should the original random pages redirect to? I would like to have them rank for the same topics they used to, but without having the original domain giving them strength, they will just stop ranking and die off. What should I do? Thanks, Alex
