• Visual indication of network activity

  is there a simple application which can sit on top of a fullscreen game to give me an indicator of when there is a lot of network activity? I can only seem to find system tray apps or programs which work outside of fullscreen games. Preferably something transparent so i can see through it. A little background info: I used to have my PC sitting sideways on my desk so I can see lights from the network card. The lights stopped working a while ago and all I need is a little blinking application to tell me when there is activity. I do not need a detailed graph or bandwidth usage, just activity notification. I've looked everywhere for something, maybe you guys are better at searching than me.

• Social Media event Bandwidth requirements

  I have an one day event in July 2012, hosting 250 attendees for a social media event. We will be uploading live video to a website, allowing the press to access the web, and some vendors will be showing off their web sites for clients and visitors. The staff will need access for uploading files and information as needed. We had the event last year and tried a cable modem brought in with 2x2 megs just for the streaming video which worked well. I had 4 wireless hot spots, rented from a company 1.5 mbps x 780 kbps, which was were a complete failure. I was assured the 4 hot spots would be enough, but they did not work. What would be the proper way to get the bandwidth required to make the one day event successful? The setting is a Private Country Club where running cables everywhere is very tough.

  I am trying to type documents in Hindi language. My OS: Ubuntu 11.10 Gnome environment (http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=gnome-session-fallback) I do not use unity interface.The method is shown here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL7icGNhIfI I am able to type in Hindi in Libreoffice and gedit as well with method shown above.But this is a very difficult way of typing because I have to remember all the English Keys corresponding to the Hindi words as mapped here http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5/html-single/International_Language_Support_Guide/images/hindi.png What I want to be able to do is type phonetically and not use above kind of keyboard. I have US English keyboard in my laptop.   I am using the python requests module on Ubuntu 13.04. I keep getting the error: requests.exceptions.SSLError: [Errno 1] _ssl.c:504: error:14077410:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:sslv3 alert handshake failure When I use curl, it fails by default but succeeds with the -3 option. curl https://username:Password@helloworldurl -3 This leads me to believe that it is the SSL version, which I found may be badly supported on ubuntu while searching the error. Sooo. How do I change or check the SSL version using python preferably with requests. Note: the url is private and cannot be given out. Sorry.

• What popular "best practices" are not always best, and why?

  "Best practices" are everywhere in our industry. A Google search on "coding best practices" turns up nearly 1.5 million results. The idea seems to bring comfort to many; just follow the instructions, and everything will turn out fine. When I read about a best practice - for example, I just read through several in Clean Code recently - I get nervous. Does this mean that I should always use this practice? Are there conditions attached? Are there situations where it might not be a good practice? How can I know for sure until I've learned more about the problem? Several of the practices mentioned in Clean Code did not sit right with me, but I'm honestly not sure if that's because they're potentially bad, or if that's just my personal bias talking. I do know that many prominent people in the tech industry seem to think that there are no best practices, so at least my nagging doubts place me in good company. The number of best practices I've read about are simply too numerous to list here or ask individual questions about, so I would like to phrase this as a general question: Which coding practices that are popularly labeled as "best practices" can be sub-optimal or even harmful under certain circumstances? What are those circumstances and why do they make the practice a poor one? I would prefer to hear about specific examples and experiences.

  I've spent a while guessing and googling, and haven't found an answer. In the past I setup my forums to send via my Gmail account, but spambots with fake emails have flooded my inbox, so I setup [email protected] with Zoho mail. Zoho works great, but I need to have my installation of phpbb3 send mass emails through the smtp.zoho.com mail server, and I can't figure out what settings I should use. The instructions on https://www.zoho.com/mail/help/pop-access.html are a little vague for anything that doesn't auto-detect the exact settings.

  I having difficulty setting up pidgin to work with my company's microsoft 365's communicator lync 2013 (not 2010) account. I either receive a message stating authentication failed, or Incompatible authentication scheme chosen: NTLM depending upon the user agent values used from this wiki It appears that both the user agent values that start with UCCAPI provide authentication failed error, which I'm guessing is "closer" to the solution. I have triple checked that the password is correct. Below are some images of my settings (I have changed the company name to "company" for annonymity. • Using Oracle Data in the Business Rules Engine

  Yesterday I started working on some new functionality that I had planned to implement using the Business Rules Engine.  As I got further into it, I realized that some of my rules were going to need to reference some data that resides in an Oracle database.  I knew the Business Rules Composer supports using DataConnections and TypedDataTables, but I’d never used this functionality myself, so I wasn’t so sure how it would work with Oracle.  As it turns out, it’s very do-able, there’s just little hoop you need to jump through. I fired up BRC and my suspicions were quickly confirmed.  BRC only recognizes SQL Server databases when it comes to editing rules.  Not letting that deter me, I decided to see if I could “trick” BRE into using Oracle data. On my local SQL server, I created a new database and in that database, created a table that matched the schema of the table I wanted to use in the Oracle database.  I then set about creating my rules, referencing the new SQL Server database everywhere I wanted to use Oracle data.  Finally, I created a new class library and added a class that implements Microsoft.RuleEngine.IFactRetriever.  In that class, I added the necessary code to get a DataSet from the Oracle server, wrap it in a TypedDataTable and assert it into the rule engine.  It’s worth pointing out that in my IFactRetriever class, I made sure to set my DataSet name to the name of the database I’d referenced in the BRC and the DataTable’s name to the name of the table that I’d referenced in the BRC. After gac’ing the new class library and deploying my policy, I tested and everything worked as expected.

• "Mac" vs "OS X" vs "Mac OS X"

  I am writing server software that gives administrators options that apply only to Mac OS X clients. When naming those options, I need to decide how I am going to refer to such clients. I can see three choices: Mac OS X Mac OS X In context, I feel that "Mac OS X" might be a little clumsy: "Default protocol for Mac OS X clients"; "Change Mac OS X protocol". In discussing with my boss, he suggests "OS X", as that's the name for the OS itself, while I think that "Mac" is more recognizable. While "OS X" is technically correct and is what Apple recommends, I feel that it has a lot less name recognition than "Mac"; in particular, administrators who work in a Windows-only environment may not even recognize "OS X" and wonder what the options is about, while I think everyone knows what "Mac" refers to. In looking at what several popular pieces of software choose, I see that Microsoft has "Office for Mac". Adobe calls it "Macintosh" (which sounds very outdated, I believe that Apple stopped using that "Macintosh" years ago). Firefox uses "Mac OS X". Google has "Google Software Downloads for Mac". I don't see many popular pieces of software that refer to it solely as OS X; it seems that either "Mac OS X" or "Mac" is used most often. Apple does refer to it as OS X, but I think the fact that it's coming from Apple provides the disambiguation that you need, so it's not confusing coming from them, while it may be in another context. Is there any good solution for this? Should I just use the somewhat clumsy "Mac OS X" everywhere (or at least, the first time I refer to it in any given screen)? Obviously, my boss has final say, but I'd like to be able to provide a coherent argument.

• How is the Linux repository administrated?

  I am amazed by the Linux project and I would like to learn how they administrate the code, given the huge number of developers. I found the Linux repository on GitHub, but I do not understand how it is administrated. For example the following commit: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/31fd84b95eb211d5db460a1dda85e004800a7b52 Notice the following part: So one authored and Torvalds committed. How is this possible. I thought that it was only possible to have either pull or pushing rights, but here it seems like there is an approval stage. I should mention that the specific problem I am trying to solve is that we use pull requests to our repo. The problem we are facing is that while a pull request is waiting to get merged, it is often broken by a commit. This leads to a seemingly never ending work to adapt the fork in order to make the pull request merge smoothly. Do Linux solve this by giving lots of people pushing rights (at least there are currently just three pull requests but hundreds of commits per day).

• How to install opencv?

  Hello All, I am trying to learn image processing and obviously opencv is one of the best options. Usually synaptic does all my installing work for me so I just checked the repos. But in the repos there is only on libcv1 and it is listed as 1.0.0-6.2ubuntu1. Does that mean it is version 1.0 of opencv? Also I found this page in community wiki https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenCV It says I need to install libcv4 which is not in my repos. I also downloaded the source but it uses something called cmake, never used it before. Is it similar to make?

According to this launchpad link, it is present in the ubuntu repositories : https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gflags and http://packages.ubuntu.com/raring/libdevel/libgflags-dev But when i try to sudo apt-get install it, I get E: Unable to locate package libgflags-dev Why is this happening ? I have all multiverse and universe enabled from software center. How to install it from apt-get ? P.S. I know i can simply download the binary and make install it, but I want to know how to do this from apt-get.

• Bootstrap responsive CSS [migrated]

  I have a four column design and I am using Bootstrap. The design renders fine in a single column in mobile devices, but in "(min-width: 768px) and (max-width: 979px)", I get four columns though there is room for only two. So clearly, the rows/spans setup would need to be rethought for those sizes. The only way I can imagine of doing this is to have semantic CSS classes used in the HTML and only including grid classes in the CSS using LESS, and then depending on screen size, including different grid classes to achieve four or two column layout. • Confusion for mime files: magic, magic.mgc, magic.mime

  I'm using Ubuntu. I'm trying to use ruby gem 'shared-mime-info' for an application I'm writing. I understand that magic.mgc is a compiled version of magic file which has magic number definitions for the different file types. BUT I don't understand why is it /usr/share/mime/magic is in binary format instead of just normal text file with each parameters separated by white space like everywhere else I'm finding on the internet when it's referencing this file? The /usr/share/mime/magic has the word 'MIME-Magic' at the beginning of the file and prioritize the rest of the stuff like. So it doesn't look like magic.mgc at all. [100:application/vnd.scribus] >1=^@^KSCRIBUSUTF8 [90:application/vnd.stardivision.writer] >2089=^@ shared-mime-info seems to want a magic file in the binary non compiled format as above and I wanted to add definition for DOCX but how does one update or generate this file without using a hex editor? There is a reference to the magic file I found at: http://standards.freedesktop.org/shared-mime-info-spec/shared-mime-info-spec-latest.html And it mention this file is updated with update-mime-database but what if I just want to add some new entry to it. hex editor? Anyway I ended up using hexer to make a new magic file in ~/.local/share/mime/ with only the entry I wanted to add and the MIME-Magic header. • Can't add repository due to 'missing' fingerprint

  I am trying to install nginx with php but when I am following a guide, like this one: http://www.justincarmony.com/blog/2011/10/24/setting-up-nginx-php-fpm-on-ubuntu-10-04/ I am always told to add that repository (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:brianmercer/php) but I can't. I'll just get "Error: can't find signing_key_fingerprint at https://launchpad.net/api/1.0/~nginx/+archive/php5" and when I go to that website I find that there is a fingerprint specified but still I get that error message. • Macbook pro 8,1 ubuntu 12.04 sd card reader doesnt work

  THe built in sd card reader on the macbook pro 8,1 (2011, early or mid i think) doesnt work AT ALL. However i read here.... https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/801034 that someone plugged in ethernet and it works. How the hell does that make a difference? There has to be some kind of better workaround? I take my laptop on the go, thats why i bought a LAPTOP. I dont want to be tethered down. Please help?

• Smooth terrain rendering

  I'm trying to render a smooth terrain with Direct3D. I've got a 50*50 grid with all y values = 0, and a set of 3D points that indicate the location on the grid and depth or height of the "valley" or "hill". I need to make the y values of the grid vertices higher or lower depending on how close they are to each 3D point. Thus, in the end I should have a smooth terrain renderer. I'm not sure at all what way I can do this. I've tried changing the height of the vertices based on the distance to each point just using this basic formula: dist = a² + b² + c² where a, b and c are the x, y, and z distance from a vertex to a 3D point. The result I get with this is not smooth at all. I'm thinking there is probably a better way. Here is a screenshot of what I've got for the moment: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2562049/terrain.jpg
