• Is there any way to remotely configure a Microsoft Lync account?

  There are no perl modules for Lync. No open source clients. Windows Powershell can do some things with it, but only on the server on which the server software is installed. It would be useful to be able to forward a certain desk phone number (we use Lync for voip) to a personal cell phone. We can do this from our own desktop machines, but only using the Lync client. It would be nice to be able to have a cron script run that just did rotations, I wouldn't have to carry around the lousy on-call phone with me. communicator.exe doesn't take any useful parameters. Nor are there any obvious function names in the DLLs that would let me just use rundll32.exe to accomplish this. There is a Lync SDK, but no examples of changing phone forwarding, and my Windows 7 machine refuses to install the Silverlight SDK dependency for some reason I can't fathom. Does anyone have any other ideas how I might accomplish this?

• Is there a good, free way to fix broken/corrupt .wmv files?

  I've recovered some files from an hdd that weren't supposed to be deleted in the first place, but they have seeking problems/crash the players. Since they have the right size, I'm thinking it might be a problem of corrupt index/header, so I'm trying to find a way to fix them. It's easy to find examples on how to fix corrupt .avi files with mencoder, but .wmv seems trickier. Also, I realize there might not be a way to fix these files, but I figure I might as well as try. As far as players go, I've tried opening it with vlc/mplayer/windows media player. I can use anything on Windows XP/7 and Ubuntu, as long as it's free. Since the files are 200mb+ and there are quite a few, I don't think trial software would work.

• Creating a webserver from scratch

  I know this is going to sound a humongous task and many of you would think why in the world would you want to do so or why re-invent the wheel. However I just want a project I can work on the side see how it goes and experiment ( I got a thirst for learning something new and this is a great challenge). Question Where would I start creating a server-side scripting like php, asp and (now) node.js I would like to have a few examples, and most importantly a CODEX/documentation where I can learn and find out more how it works. • Receiving a notification on a Cluster Group Failover

  Hi all, I have several Windows Cluster set up and I have the need of keeping track of failovers. I'd need to receive a notification of sort whenever a group fails over. I've seen some examples around, but I can't rely on the approach of just sending a message whenever the resources are stopped/restarted as it would generate too many false alarms. In few words, I need to be notified if and only if the group really fails over. I was thinking that probably the best way is monitoring the System Event Log, but, if possible, I'd prefer not having to write a script/program from scratch for this issue. Is there any script/product that already does it? Thanks.

I have searched for examples on setting up Apache 2.2. with mod_fcgid, but all of teh tutorials etc I have seen, relate to PHP, Python, Perl etc. Is anyone aware of a resource that shows how I may setup Apache to use mod_fcgid (NOT mod_fastcgi) to test my binary? If no online resource is available (I'd be surprised), then could someone please point out the steps required to do the testing?

• How to use ccache selectively?

  I have to compile multiple versions of an app written in C++ and I think to use ccache for speeding up the process. ccache howtos have examples which suggest to create symlinks named gcc, g++ etc and make sure they appear in PATH before the original gcc binaries, so ccache is used instead. So far so good, but I'd like to use ccache only when compiling this particular app, not always. Of course, I can write a shell script that will try to create these symlinks every time I want to compile the app and will delete them when the app is compiled. But this looks like filesystem abuse to me. Are there better ways to use ccache selectively, not always? For compilation of a single source code file, I could just manually call ccache instead of gcc and be done, but I have to deal with a complex app that uses an automated build system for multiple source code files.

  I have an Excel 2007 spreadsheet for a list of products and a bunch of factors to rate each one on, and I'm using Conditional Formatting to set the color of the cells in the individual attribute columns. It looks something like this: I want to fill in the rating column for each item with a color, based on the color ratings of its individual attributes. Examples of ways to determine this: the color of the category in which the item scored worst the statistical mode of the category colors the average of the category ratings, where each color is assigned a numerical value How can I implement any or all of the above rules?   The IT department just made my life a little bit harder again: they introduced a manual HTML login page for all websites they have not "classified". This means that all the applications which try to access unclassified websites for e.g. downloading plugins do not work. Examples: Eclipse plugin installation, Maven builds etc. What would be the easiest workaround for this? The best I've come up with is try to extend/customize Ruby's httpproxy.rb that comes with Webrick. I would automate the manual login process whenever that login response page is detected. This sounds quite painful, and I think there might/should be simpler options?

• Learning Puppet Exercise - Installing httpd package and starting service

  I'm working my way through the Learning Puppet guide on manifests, and I am stuck on the exercise at the bottom of the page which asks you to install the httpd package and start the httpd service. So far my manifest looks like: package { 'httpd': ensure => present, } service { 'httpd': ensure => running, enable => true, } However, upon trying puppet apply on it, I get: From looking at other examples of similar manifests, I cant quite figure out what the issue is - I presume the attempt at installing the package httpd failed? Unfortunately the error message isn't particularly helpful here. Any assistance anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. I'm running their VMWare Learning Puppet VM (PE 2.7.0) that was provided for this tutorial.

• ESX Firewall Command Troubles

  Hi, I am working on creating some firewall rules to stop some of the SSH brute-force attacks that we have seen recently on our ESX server hosts. I have tried the following rules from the CLI to first block all SSH traffic and then allow the two ranges that I am interested in: esxcfg-firewall --ipruleAdd 0.0.0.0/0,22,tcp,REJECT,"Block_SSH" esxcfg-firewall --ipruleAdd 11.130.0.0/16,22,tcp,ACCEPT,"Allow_PUBLIC_SSH" esxcfg-firewall --ipruleAdd 10.130.0.0/16,22,tcp,ACCEPT,"Allow_PRIVATE_SSH" However, these rules are not working as intended. I know that if you do not enter the block rule first, then the allow rule will not be processed. We are now having the issue where the first entered allow rule is being ignored such that the block rule works and the last entered allow rule works. I was curious if anyone had any ideas on how I could allow a few different ranges of IP's with the esxcfg-firewall --ipruleAdd command? I am at a loss and am having a hard time locating examples or further documentation about this. Thanks in advance for your help with this.

  Suppose I've got multiple cursors along several lines, like this: foo| barr| foobar| baz| How can I automatically push the whitespace at the end of each line out to a flat edge, like this?: foo | barr | foobar | baz | (In these examples, | is supposed to be my cursor.) • How to set/keep directory permissions?

  I'm using CwRsync to connect from my Windows development machine to a linux webserver : rsync -avuz -e ./ssh --exclude=".svn" /cygdrive/c/xampp/htdocs/project123/ [email protected]:/home/user123/public_html This syncs my development project directory nicely and fast to the server. But after doing this, all directory properties are reset to the local user user123 only, so the website is not available anymore. I need to manually reset those properties. Why is this happening, and how to prevent it? PS. coming from a Windows environment I'm having a really hard time understanding rsync. I copied the above command from some examples... just need to get this one small thing working too...

• What is your approach to draw a representation of your network ?

  Hello, I'm looking to the community to see how people are drawing their networks, i.e. using symbols to represent complex topology. You can have hardware approach, where every hardware unit are represented. You can also have "entity" approach, where each "service" is shown. Both are interesting but it is difficult to have both on the same schema (but this is needed, especially using virtualization environment). Furthermore, it is difficult to have complex informations on such representation. For instance security parameters (encrypted link, need for authentication) or specific details (protocol type, ports, encapsulation). So my question is: where your are drawing a representation of your network, what is your approach ? Are you using methodology and/or specific softwares ? What is your recommendations for information to put (or not) ? How to deal with the complexity when the network becomes large and/or you want to put a lot of information on it ? Examples and links to good references will be appreciated.

  I have a set of files from example001.txt to example100.txt. Each file contains a list of keywords from a superset (the superset is available if we want it). So example001.txt might contain apple banana ... otherfruit I'd like to be able to process these files and produce something akin to a matrix so there is the list of examples* on the top row, the fruit down the side, and a '1' in a column if the fruit is in the file.   I need to forward e-mails to different mail accounts by different conditions. The aim is to create mail notification scheme for my company. I'd like to setup server on dedicated mail domain for it. Is there any software that helps to get my aim (Linux)? Examples: 1) forward all e-mail sent to [email protected] to x@x, y@y, z@z (no conditions) 2) forward e-mail sent to [email protected] where subject contains '[finance]' to a@b and b@b 3) forward e-mail sent to [email protected] where subject contains '[fault]' to s@s and s2@s. Receivers' domains are different. P.S. Now we use Gmail filters to get this functionality, but it's unstable and hard to maintain.

• Does a modern PC require a graphics card to run?

  As I can remember, on old systems (Pentium II or III) it was not possible to boot and run the PC if the graphics card was missing (AGP cards were used in those days). Many years from then, I'm using motherboards with integrated graphics and I have no experience related to this subject, the "graphics card" always was present. Currently I intend to build a home/private "server" for my purposes and most of the motherboards I want to buy have no integrated graphics (AMD 870 or 970). I can take a normal graphics card from my firends for a few hours/days and use it when installing the necessary software. The question is: can I boot and run the PC without problems after I install everything I need and the graphics card is removed? if a general answer cannot be given, at least some examples of manufacturers/MB series/MB models will be helpfull I think it's obvious, but for completeness: I mean cheap desktop components, not real servers.

  This maybe more of a Linux specific question but... I've been reading many tutorials and it seems that you can use JavaScript, Python, and C++ to write code for the Beaglebone Black(BBB). It looks like the way C++ interfaces with the BBB hardware is via reading/writing text files on the OS while Python has it's own library. All the C++ examples out there control the GPIO and PWM via reading/writing to text files. Is this the only way to access the hardware or just how Linux does drivers?

  I need to parse into two substrings a string that always starts with numeric text followed by alphnumeric text. The strings can vary a bit, but not too much. Below are examples of incoming format and the strings I need: "00 10 50 Information to Bidders" ==> "00 10 50", "Information to Bidders" "001050 Information to Bidders" ==> "001050", "Information to Bidders" "00 10 50 - Information to Bidders" ==> "00 10 50", "Information to Bidders" "001050 -- Information to Bidders" ==> "001050", "Information to Bidders" I was hoping it would only be a half dozen lines of VBA, but my code is turning into a loop where I'm testing every character in the string to see where the changeover from numeric-only to non-numeric, then parsing the string based on the changeover location. Not a big deal, but messier than I was hoping for. Are there VBA functions that would eliminate the need to iterate through each string character?

• Transfer disk image to larger/smaller disk

  I need to switch the hard drive on a 2006 iMac to a new SSD. I don't have the original installation CDs. I know I can order CDs from Apple, but this costs money. Someone told me it's possible to rip the image of the old drive and transfer to the new drive. If so, does the size of the new drive have to be exactly the same as the old? If not, my questions are: Is it possible to "stretch" the image from 120 MB disk to a 256 MB disk (numbers are examples)? If so, what is the command line for this? Likewise, is it possible to "shrink" an image from a larger disk (eg. 256 MB) to a smaller disk (eg. 120 MB), provided that the actual space used on the disk does not exceed 120 MB? How do you do this on the command line?

• From where can I get "Python Launcher" for Mac OS X Lion?

  I use a macbook (air) with OS X Lion on it. I have Python 2.7 installed already but I can't seem to find a "Python Launcher.app" anywhere on the system. I tried installing with with pip but it couldn't find anything to fetch. I tried searching on Google to find a downloader but my search yielded no results (for downloading). Where can I get this app? I have a folder with 20+ subfolders of GUI examples which in turn contain anywhere from 3 to 5 subfolders. I don't want to go through each within the terminal, would much rather launch these .py scrips from the finder. Thank you for your help.

LAN 192.168.2.1/21 WAN1 200.41.X.2/24 WAN2 200.41.X.3/24 ISP Gateway 200.41.X.1 This is a connection with 5 different IP addresses. WAN1 and WAN2 are directly connected to my ISP router. I need a way to configure some clients navigating through WAN1 and some through WAN2. I am new to pfsense so, please, if you can send me some examples to do this.
