• How to make a pxe bootable 10MegaByte or larger dos image?

  Would like to make a "massive" DOS floppy disk image, say 10MegaBytes or more containing all the firmware updates i need for any system, harddrive, BIOS. i do not need the DOS image to be networkable as everything will be on the PXE booted image, but networking would be nice. Since ZipDisks were attached to the floppy disk controller and were over 100MegaBytes, this should be possible. i tried a long time ago to do this and spent too much time on it only to have it fail to boot. So if someone has reliable instructions on how to create such a nightmarish beast and edit it, please let me know. One image that can used for PXE and copied to a USB stick would be a plus. Too bad manufacturers don't supply a single bootable Linux ISO containing all their firmware updates, that would be easy to boot over-the-lan and have networking. HP servers do this and it is awesome.

• Win7 MCE seems unable to play ripped DVDs

  I'm running Windows 7 and am using mymovies.dk to rip the dvds to my harddrive. However, playback isn't watchable as the picture is very stuttery and blocky, only shots that show the same image for a few seconds get shown properly. The dvd's are ripped as the straight folder structure and if played in XBMC are fine. I've tried installing both the cccp-project.net and latest div-x codecs, but that doesn't seem to have helped. I'd like to stick with MCE as it has a high WAF (wife acceptance factor). Any suggestions?

• grub error: symbol 'grub_puts_' not found

  I updated from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04, and after installation, the computer restarted. When grub loaded, all I get is a screen that says error: symbol 'grub_puts' not found and a useless grub prompt that looks like grub_rescue I've tried reinstalling grub from the livecd (usb drive) following this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows to no avail. Sometimes, when I start up from the live usb, linux doesn't recognize the harddrive at all. It's not in the places menu, nor does fdisk list anything. If anyone can help fix up grub so it recognizes and boots up the two os's I have installed, I'd appreciate it. Also, I know little about grub, so try and make it easy to understand.

• How safe is locking the screen?

  So, both windows and linux have a pretty useful feature that allows you to leave everything running on the PC while also keeping invaders away by locking the screen. My question is: Say I leave my laptop with the screen locked while I go get a donnut, and then it gets stolen. Assuming the thief has access to whatever software he needs, how easy/hard would it be for him to access my (currently logged-in) account? Now let me be clear. I'm not asking if he can access the data on the harddrive. I know he can, and that issue would go under data encryption, which is not my question here. I'm focusing on how hard would it be to get around the "Insert Password" screen, and have full access to my account. I'm looking for answers regarding both OS's; but, if needed, assume Ubuntu. • Archive Recorded Show from DVR

  IF I have an AT&T U-Verse DVR, is there a way to copy the information off the DVR to an PC for Archiving/burning to a DVD? I know that I could connect the A/V outs on the DVR to the A/V inputs on a DVD Recorder, or to a capture card on a PC, and Play the show, and record in real-time on the DVD or PC, but if the show is say a World Cup Game, this would take 2-3 hours per. My thought is that the DVR is just a HardDrive, and the files have to be stored in an digital format, it should be possible to do a copy of some sort. I'm currently recording all of the WC games, but if I don't watch them right away, I'm concerned that I will push other programming that the rest of the family has recorded out, making me unpopular at home. Note, I'm talking about archiving for personal use, not redistribution or anything.

• Is it reasonable to use my Time Machine backup to migrate to a new primary hard drive?

  I'm planning to upgrade my MacBook's harddrive. I already use Time Machine to back up the system to an external drive. Is it reasonable to use Time Machine to restore my system to the new laptop drive, once I install it? I mean, a restore like this really ought to be fine, right? That's the point of it, after all! I know imaging the drive would be more appropriate but this plan seems a whole lot easier (albeit probably slower), with practically no risk since my original drive won't be involved. A second question would then be, are there any considerations to be made when doing a Time Machine restore?

  I have a few friends which keep on coming to me every month to format their laptops and then reinstall Windows. This is time consuming. Is there any way that I can make an image of their full system on my Harddrive and then restore to their Laptop from my computer? Edit: What I want is I have the image of the whole laptop on my desktop. The laptop is formatted with no OS. I have no CD/DVD to put in laptop (as the image is 15GB). How will I trasfer the image from my desktop to the laptop without using CD/DVD? Any option for booting via network, etc?

• Photo Management Software for OS X That Supports Multiple Library Locations

  I'm looking at the possibility of changing our photo management software. Thinking about Aperture or Lightroom. And want to know if either supports: Having folders/libraries on separate harddrives/Volumes. Tolerates having network folders occasionally connected Snappy interface A solid enough piece of software as not to crash or behave weirdly. [ so the wife doesn't get stuck and have to call me ;) ] Background The wife is photographer and I'm the computer programmer. Our current setup is Picasa, with a "Recent/Working" folder on the local iMac harddrive, and "Archive" folders on NFS mounted Linux Server, Raid 5, for redundant and extra storage capacity. (the Linux server also syncs with Amazon's EC2) Picasa is doing OK, but I get annoyed when it doesn't do behave properly. Usually around issues when the Linux disk isn't mounted. And overall, I wish Picasa seemed a little more polished and snappier. Thanks, Lance

• How to view bad blocks on mounted ext3 filesystem?

  I've ran fsck -c on the (unmounted) partition in question a while ago. The process was unattended and results were not stored anywhere (except badblock inode). Now I'd like to get badblock information to know if there are any problems with the harddrive. Unfortunately, partition is used in the production system and can't be unmounted. I see two ways to get what I want: Run badblocks in read-only mode. This will probably take a lot of time and cause unnecessary bruden on the system. Somehow extract information about badblocks from the filesystem iteself. How can I view known badblocks registered in mounted filesystem?

• How do you add more space to a Fedora (LVM) partition?

  In a nutshell, i have a VM that ran out of space. I increased the size of the VM's harddrive to be 4 times bigger but the OS partition is still only using 1x the space. I need to change the LVM partition to take up the extra 4x space but I don't know how to extend the LVM partition. (NOTE: To make the screenshots given below I had to boot from a live-cd for gnome-partition-manager (aka gparted). Very unfortunately gparted is only able to "detect LVM" and can't do any LVM operations.) Here is what "gparted" shows. Please notice that the "resize" option is not available: The Problem: I can't find good directions<1 on how to grow the LVM partition via GUI or command-line! How do you grow a LVM partition that was created by the default Fedora install? If you are giving command line directions. Please explain what each line of commands does.

• Running Mathimatica-5 remotely

  Ok, I have Mathmatica 5 - a powerful CAS. I have a cheap netbook, wich not olny is too slow to run mathmatica on, I doubt it has the harddrive space. I do however have remote access to a number of very powerful computers, (most of wich run variose linuxes, but one of which is windows server 2008) Mostly over SSH but other protocols can be arraged for some, i'm sure. (I might even be able to remote desktop the windows server 2008) So I'ld like to install Mathmatica onto one of these machine and then run it remotely. Either from the command line via putty or via some other method. I glanced through the mathmatical documentaion and read soemthing about using some MathLink program, wich linkes the front end istalled on my computer to a remote kernal. Anyone have any expirience with this? I'm not sure if this belongs here or in SuperUser.

• Looking for a free or open-source burner emulator [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Virtual CDR driver I am looking for a free or open-source virtual CD/DVD emulator to run in a Windows environment. What I want is similar to what SlySoft's Virtual Clone Drive or Daemon Tools provides, but the emulated drive needs to be a burner of some type. The burner should be able to save disc images (.iso, .ccd, etc) to my harddrive - basically, the same as if I burned the files to a CD-R, and then ripped them back to a disc image. I have already looked around some and come across 2 - DVD neXt COPY iTurns and NoteBurner M4P. Both of these programs create a virtual CD-RW drive, but they are integrated into their product (for burning from iTunes to create mp3 files) and cannot create disc images. I am currently writing a piece of software that will have the capability to burn disc images onto CDs/DVDs, and I don't want to end up with a 100 coasters while I'm testing my software. • Backup Dropbox to Amazon Glacier

  i'm using Dropbox for Backup which means i keep all my files in my Dropbox folder (encrypted using encfs but that should not be relevant). I like this solution because it is automatic and keeps copies of my files on several machines at different locations. The only thing i could see go wrong is that Dropbox has some sort of bug that tells all my machines to delete the files. So currently i do a Backup of the Dropbox folder to an external Harddrive. With Amazon Glacier it seems affordable to automate Backup snapshots of my Dropbox. What i am looking for is a tool that will do this for me - the base case scenario would be that files would go from Dropbox (using their API) directly to Amazon as uploading the ~80GB from my home connection would take forever... • Trying to get a PC to boot off a bootable SD card that is inside an USB attached Android device.

  First, I'd like to make myself look less a madman than I may have appeared to be. I wanted to have a bootable USB stick with me at all times, but it's less convenient because it's an extra object and it's easier to lose, forget etc. Then I thought, I have an Android phone, and it has a micro SD in it; perfect. Not all PC's can boot off a card reader, but the phone itself is a card reader when attached as a disk drive. Or at least so I thought. Turns out that my netbook BIOS (tested on Asus eeePC) refuses to see it as an external harddrive; it only recognizes it as a generic USB device and doesn't offer an option to boot from it. The device has a name "Android phone" or smth, so it seems to me that it doesn't work as a "pure" card reader, and instead still manifests itself as a phone. Can it be somehow overridden?

• Restore "lost" user after Active Directory removal?

  Is it possible to restore lost users after Active Directory unistallation ? (I forgot to switch users to local users) The computer run Windows Server 2008 R2 Entreprise, and all the registry linked to the user i want to restore seems to still be there, user's folder is still on the harddrive, and useraccount2 still show the user (But flagged as unknown user) Some folders still have rigts set to this lost user, and even the local default Admin account cannot open/delete the folder. (But the real problem here is to find how to recover users account, the folder can be deleted an other way) All users i want te restore was originaly local users, converted to domain users after Active Directory installation. I think that if i can change user's sid (choosing the sid manually) i'll be able to easily recover rights on folders Regards

• SQL Server 2008, not enough disk space

  Hello, I'm executing sql query on my database. I have SQL Server 2008 installed on my D harddrive which has 55 GB free space. I have also C drive which has sth like 150 MB free (right now). While executing that query on quite a big table (16 GB) I have an error: An error occurred while executing batch. Error message is: Not enough disk space. I would like to know if there is any possibility that I can make SQL Server to use D drive instead of C Or maybe there is any other problem with what I'm doing ? Thanks for help

• VMWare Server :: VM set to 2gb RAM but vmware process shows 100mb physical, 1900mb virtual

  I've set up a VMWare instance to run CastIron Integration Appliance. I allocated 2gb of memory to the instance, assuming it would take this as physical memory (my server has 8gb total). When I view top however on the server, the vmware-vmx process has about 100m Resident memory and 1900m Virtual. Running CastIron it reports that the appliance often hits 50% memory usage. Does this mean I'm using 900mb of harddrive space as memory? I wanted VMWare to use 2gb of physical memory, no swap. Can anyone tell me how to achieve this? • How do I tell if my firewire connection is running as 400 or 800?

  I have a MacBook Pro with FireWire 800 and a freecom external harddrive that has USB3, FireWire 400 and 800. I am using a Nikkai FireWire 800 cable that has 800 connector on one end and a 400 connector on the other end. The 800 connector is attached to the MacBook pro and the 400 connector is attached to the freecom drive. Is there any way to tell what connection has been established? I looked at disk utility and it simply said 'FireWire'. Is there a command-line tool that would give more information? If it's 400, I plan to swap the cable for 800 connector at both ends.

• Storage setup for large files

  I need to store over 200TB of data (all types, biggest being video files) and be able to access it over a local network. The files will be accessed for editing or searches. I don't need versioning, but a setup that would keep me safe from harddrive failures would be nice. Right now the content is on different harddrives, some external drives, some regular. I don't exclude the possibility of buying new/extra drives if necessary. If they will ever be exposed to the web, it wont be to the public, but just a couple of people. I have no idea what to buy to make this happen. • What is the computer "doing" when it is running slow and task manager is not showing any CPU activity?

  Typical example is when shutting down a memoryintensive application. It can take quite a while before the computer gets back up to speed. Is there some inherent cost in releasing memory? Or is it throttled by some kind of harddrive activity, and if so is there any good way to track that? I usually bring up task manager when a computer is running slow, and usually sorting by cpu activity can show what process is causing the problem, but sometimes there is no activity showing. And yes I "show processes from all users", I have been wondering this since the days win2k :)

• access netatalk share on osx permission issue

  I have two users in ubuntu. My first was me and I am the owner of the folder in question. The second is my wife. Netatalk is running and we can both see the folder on the network. However I can access it but she cannot. She gets an error in osx "... you don't have permission to see its contents". I have use chmod 777 on the folder but it made no difference. Any ideas? UPDATE The directory in question is a mounted harddrive at /media/ourPhotos

• Can I format a USB key in GUID mode in windows 7 to make it Mac OSX boot friendly?

  I have a macbookpro that wont boot properly. I've tried resetting the PRAM (holding down option - alt - P - R), but it doesn't work, it gets halfway through the boot process and says "You need to restart your computer" in several languages. Recently I downloaded a USB Key compatible Linux OS. This USB Key works as a boot loader on Windows machines, but on OSX it can only find the Harddrive partitions when I go into the boot loader menu (holding down Option on startup). I am assuming it is because it is formatted as FAT32, and not GUID Table. I believe my CD drive is also bust, it hasn't worked in a long time. I don't have another Mac computer, so is there a way I can format the USB key as GUID Partition from a windows 7 machine?

  Related to my older question: Get xp product key from boot Thanks for the help on that one. So, in the end, i couldn't get into my harddrive because i didn't have the available hardware to hook it up to another computer to get the old activation key. So, instead, i entered another activation key (i know, naughty) in hopes that there would be a way to retrieve the old one, restore point or something afterwords. What legal ways can I get xp re-activated after a repair when I don't have any record of my activation key? for those who think im just trying to crack it, your wrong: Got a virus, which stopped me from getting into windows Got AVG Anti Virus, which stopped me from getting into safe mode Got a 2 year old, who decided to rip-off and chew my activation sticker on my computer (nice one). Repaired windows installation thinking i wouldn't be asked to re-enter the activation key, to find that i was.

They said that this is not useful to make more than one partition, as when you recover your windows after some time it will erase/delete all files including new partitions, so this would not be very usefull for you. • My new Xbox 360 drive doesn't show up

  I bought an Xbox 360 Arcade version a while ago and today I got a 120GB drive from a shop that had a closedown sale. I put the drive on the side as per the picture on the back side of the drive. When I go to settings and look at memory, it only finds the built in memory chip, not the harddrive. Am I doing it correct? I have almost never used my Xbox so I'm not sure if there's anything more to it. I don't think I fitted the drive wrong either, it seems pretty much impossible to do it wrong. The box came with only the drive, it doesn't have any transfer kit or the likes.
