  • Why Can't SSMS Access The Documents Folder in Windows 7?

    I have a database backup located in my Windows 7 Documents folder (c:\Users\Aaron\Documents...), and I'm trying to restore it using SQL Server Management Studio. However, the program is unable to access anything within the Users\Aaron directory using its non-standard file selection dialog, even when run as an Administrator. I'm brand new to Windows 7... Is there some sort of security setting that I need to trigger to give programs access to these files?

  • Microsoft Windows 64-bit application development best practises installation folder.

    My problem is that a vendor is providing me with a 64bit application (packed in a 64bit installer) but it goes and installs to the x86 (Program Files) Folder and he keeps telling me its OK but I want it to install in the Program Files directory; as the 32 bit version does that and scripts for the app are developed based on this assumption. Can someone direct me to the Microsoft recommended best practices for 64bit applications(links). Thanks in advance.

I noticed they all have similar folder names in the root directory bin boot dev etc home lib lost+found media mnt opt proc root sbin selinux srv sys tmp usr var I googled around, but couldn't find anywhere that explained the purpose of each of these. I understand a couple, but could anyone point me somewhere or give a quick breakdown of the common ones.

    I had a working Postfix server, but added a few lines to my main.cf in a hope to block some common spam.     Starting around the time I installed the Office 2010 Beta, Whenever I login, Windows tries to open a file named "Bob", coincidentally the first part of my username. Selecting Notepad to open it, and it contains TCP/IP network settings. I've looked for and deleted unrecognized entries in my StartUp folder, in HKLM/.../CurrentVersion/Run and in HKCU/.../CurrentVersion/Run with no luck. Is there any other place I should be looking for errant entries?

  • Live Mesh deleted my folder! Is there anyway to recover it?

    I'm using Live Mesh to sync files. I have two machines, one has my work and the second was offline. When I booted the second Live Mesh deleted all the content of a folder from my live desktop. I can see the entry in the news section of my live desktop (delete 74 folders...). Anyone know if there's a way to undeleted or recover these files? Thanks!

So how can I sort folders by the last characters in the folder string? Characters will always be three consecutive numbers, and will run from 001 to 999 (until I've done a thousand jobs, which will take years).

  • How do I exclude an Outlook folder form Windows Search Index in Windows 7?

    I have a pretty big (~30GB) email archive (Outlook + Exchange: .ost file) and I would like to use the Outlook Search Feature (Windows Search technology). I would like to exclude some folders from the indexing (at least the "spam" folder!) but it seems there is no option for that in the standard configurations. Is there any other way (registries, etc) that can I accomplish this? I am using Windows 7 and Outlook 2007. Thanks!

  • Which options do I have for Java process communication?

    We have a place in a code of such form: void processParam(Object param) { wrapperForComplexNativeObject result = jniCallWhichMayCrash(param); processResult(result); } processParam - method which is called with many different arguments. jniCallWhichMayCrash - a native method which is intended to do some complex processing of it's parameter and to create some complex object. It can crash in some cases. wrapperForComplexNativeObject - wrapper type generated by SWIG processResult - a method written in pure Java which processes it's parameter by creation of several kinds (by the kinds I'm not meaning classes, maybe some like hierarchies) of objects: 1 - Some non-unique objects which are referencing each other (from the same hierarchy), these objects can have duplicates created from the invocations of processParam() method with different parameter values. Since it's costly to keep all the duplicates it's necessary to cache them. 2 - Some unique objects which are referencing each other (from the same hierarchy) and some of the objects of 1st kind. After processParam is executed for each of the arguments from some set the data created in processResult will be processed together. The problem is in fact that jniCallWhichMayCrash method may crash the entire JVM and this will be very bad. The reason of crash may be such that it can happen for one argument value and not for the other. We've decided that it's better to ignore crashes inside of JVM and just skip some chunks of data when such crashes occur. In order to do this we should run processParam function inside of separate process and pass the result somehow (HOW? HOW?! This is a question) to the main process and in case of any crashes we will only lose some part of data (It's ok) without lose of everything else. So for now the main problem is implementation of transport between different processes. Which options do I have? I can think about serialization and transmitting of binary data by the streams, but serialization may be not very fast due to object complexity. Maybe I have some other options of implementing this?

  • Why do I need to give my options a value attribute in my dropdown? JQuery related.

    So far in my web developing experiences, I've noticed that almost all web developers/designers choose to give their options in a select a value like so: <select name="foo"> <option value="bar">BarCheese</option> // etc. // etc. </select> Is this because it is best practice to do so? I ask this because I have done a lot of work with jQuery and dropdown's lately, and sometimes I get really annoyed when I have to check something like: $('select[name=foo]').val() == "bar"); To me, many times that seems less clear than just being able to check the val() against BarCheese. So why is it that most web developers/designers specify a value paramater instead of just letting the options actual value be its value? And yes, if the option has a value attribute I know I can do something like this: $('select[name=foo] option:contains("BarCheese")').attr('selected', 'selected'); But I would still really like to know why this is done.     I'm hoping to implement something like all of the great plugins out there for ruby, so that you can do this: acts_as_commentable has_attached_file :avatar But I have one constraint: That helper method can only include a module; it can't define any variables or methods.   • On my Mac, under the 'Shared' folder it shows another computer in my house, am I hacked?

    I didnt' setup any connection to another computer in my house (its a PC), and I just noticed under my 'Shared' folder in the file explorer on my Mac laptop I see the name of the PC. How could this have shown up when I didn't even try to connect to it before? Could I possibly be hacked or is this normal it just scanned our internal wireless network? I havent' setup any kind of network really, just have a wireless modem that other computers share.

    The folder pane in Thunderbird used to have a left and right arrow that allowed switching between the folders displayed. However, since a week or so, the arrows are gone (update? miss-clicked something?) As I use them several times a day: how can I get the arrows back? I have Thunderbird 8.0. Note: I know, switching is also accessible via the menu bar View Folders, but this is too much clicks for me.
