  I am a C# developer getting started on Objective-C / Cocoa Touch programming. I think I might have gotten some terms wrong because I keep thinking about them "the C# way". Specifically, I have come around the term "protocol" in various documentation and tutorials. In Objective-C, what exactly is a protocol ? Can it be compared to a C# interface ? Is the following declaration the same as saying "The class is implementing the protocol UITextFieldDelegate" ? • Why wasn't C# designed with 'const' for variables and methods?

  I suspect const was simplified for the C# spec for general language simplicity. • How to extract a single function from a source file

  Hi, I'm working on a small academic research about extremely long and complicated functions in the Linux kernel. I'm trying to figure out if there is a good reason to write 600 or 800 lines-long functions. For that purpose, I would like to find a tool that can extract a function from a .c file, so I can run some automated tests on the function. For example, If I have the function cifs_parse_mount_options() within the file connect.c, I'm seeking a solution that would roughly work like: extract /fs/cifs/connect.c cifs_parse_mount_options and return the 523 lines of code(!) of the function, from the opening braces to the closing braces. Of course, any way of manipulating existing software packages like gcc to do that, would be most helpful too. • has anyone tried designing a webpage for psp?

  erm im trying to make a personal bible for my psp (i tried googling but the only bible version i've seen on my skimming is on KJV and im trying to make mine have 3 versions namely TNIV, NLT and Amplified Bible) so my only solution was to make on for myself and my approach was to save an html file on my mem-stick and open it up through the console's browser my concerns are: 1. how does the psp browser handle css and javascript? 2. is there a doctype declaration specifically designed for the psp browser? 3. can i use any local database to store my texts for easier query or do i have no choice but rely on static text files? 4. is there anyone in SO who have experienced developing a page for this console and can he/she give me some tips and advice? thanks much in advance for your responses.. :)

  Recently I've bumped into realization/implementation of Singleton design pattern for C++. It has looked in the following way (I have adopted it from real life example): // a lot of methods is omitted here class Singleton { public: static Singleton* getInstance( ); ~Singleton( ); private: Singleton( ); static Singleton* instance; }; From this declaration I can deduce that instance field is initiated on the heap, that means there is a memory allocation. That is completely unclear for me is when does exactly memory is going to be deallocated? Or there is a bug and memory leak? It seems like there is a problem in implementation. PS. And main question how to implement it in the right way?

  can someone clarify this for me: When there’s more than one argument, the arguments are declared within the method name after the colons. Arguments break the name apart in the declaration, just as in a message. For example: - (void)setWidth:(float)width height:(float)height; So in the above: method is for instance variables returns void parameter#1 is a float, named width. parameter#2 is a float,named height. But why is it hieght:(float)height; and not just: - (void)setWidth: (float)width (float)height;

  Hi, Is there any body can confirm the description here is true? My experience is that I can not use Example::Vector.new at all. C/C++ structs are wrapped as Ruby classes, with accessor methods (i.e. "getters" and "setters") for all of the struct members. For example, this struct declaration: struct Vector { double x, y; }; gets wrapped as a Vector class, with Ruby instance methods x, x=, y and y=.   Hello everybody, I have to populate javascript code in html layout (hidden fields, method params) with string data from model. Html.Encode is not appropriate for my task because it encodes ' symbol, bypass : (that ruines object attributes declaration) and so on. I wrote static helper class that is used from View like this: alert('<%=ViewHelper.MakeJavaScriptSafe(Model.Message)%>'); I hope there is asp.net in-built function I don't know about for this task.   i have a situation where i need the Checker enum below used in multiple classes: package Sartre.Connect4; public enum Checker { EMPTY, RED, YELLOW } so i put the Checker in a Checker.java file and then from the classes that need it i simply do the following: example: public Cell(){ currentCell = Checker.EMPTY; } example: public Cell(Checker checker){ currentCell = checker; } and the code compiles fine and runs fine also. so what is my question? well being new to Java i am just wondering if the way i use Checker without encapsulating it in a class is a sound implementation? it may be because of The enum declaration defines a class (called an enum type). as noted in Java docs enum tutorial page. thank you for your insight into this matter.

  I want to be able to check if I can edit a cell in a database with a new object Example method declaration: something.isValid(Object newObject, row, column); Example cases: If the editing cell stores an Number and I give it a String, the method will return false... If the editing cell has to be different than every other entry and the new object is the same as something else, the method will also return false.... My main goal... I want to check a whole row, and if everything is valid, I will edit the whole row. Right now, the only way I can find out if I can actually edit something is by actually editing it and seeing if I get an error.

An unsupported character encoding was declared for the HTML document using a meta tag. The declaration was ignored. My firebug version is 1.7.3. What could be causing this error?.

  I want to define the following class as such: public class CollectionAttribute<E extends Collection<T>> { private String name; private E value; public CollectionAttribute(String name, E value) { this.name = name; this.value = value; } public E getValue() { return value; } public void addValue(T value) { value.add(T); } } This won't compile (cannot resolve symbol T). If I replace the class declaration with the following: public class CollectionAttribute<E extends Collection<?>> Then I can't reference the parametrized type of the collection. Am I missing something or have I reached a limitation with generics in Java ?

• Calling C++/CLI Method with System::DateTime parameter requires 'ValueType' as a parameter?

  I'm attempting to call a method written in C++/CLI from C#. The C++/CLI code is used to update a TIMESTAMP column in an Oracle database, given a record ID and the System::DateTime object which is the .NET compatible data type for Oracle's TIMESTAMP type. The method I am calling has the following prototype: bool ChangeJobUpdateDate (int jobIdIn, System::DateTime^ updateDateIn) I've added a reference to this DLL project in a test project that I made; I'm writing the tests in C#. However, when I try to call this method from the C# unit test project, the function appears to have the following method declaration (via intellisense): bool ChangeJobUpdateDate (int jobIdIn, ValueType updateDateIn) I'm admittedly not that familiar with C++/CLI, so is there something I'm missing?

• Safari won't request video or audio from HTML 5 media elements?

  So far what I've been developing has worked in Chrome and, using fallbacks, IE8. What I don't get is this: Safari just won't start loading <video> or <audio> content. Safari 6 won't load, and neither will iOS 5's Safari: My code calls .load() on the elements at the appropriate time (at least for Chrome), so what gives? Here is the video declaration: <video width="800" height="600" class="faces" id="facesVideo"> <source src="video/grid.mp4" type="video/mp4" /> <source src="video/grid.ogv" type="video/ogg" /> </video> The audio is declared dynamically, but has the same problem. Do I need to wait for some DOM event that Chrome doesn't need before calling .load()? What does it take to get Safari to start buffering until the elements can fire canplaythrough?

• C++ - Print Out Objects From Set

  If I have a C++ set, declaration set personList; with iterator, set::const_iterator location; how can I print out the contents of the set? They are all person objects, and I have overridden the operator<< for Person. The line that errors is: cout << location and it's in a basic for loop. Netbeans gives the following error: proj.cpp:78: error: no match for ‘operator<<’ in ‘std::cout << location’ so it looks like it wants an override for the iterator's <<. Basically, I am taking objects that used to be stored in an array format, but are now in a set. What is the equivalent to cout << array[i] for sets?

• OO C++ - Virtual Methods

  Just a really quick question here. I'm using virtual functions to read in from a text file. Now, it's virtual because in one aspect I want the values to be normalised, and, in the other respect I don't want them to be normalised. I have tried to do this: bool readwav(string theFile, 'native'); So in theory, if the 'native' is used, this method should be called, however, if 'double' is called then a different version of the method is called. Same for if the value is empty, it should just perform the native option. First question, why doesn't the declaration above work? Also, is this the best route to go down? Or, would it be better to have just one class method that switches between the options. Thanks :)

• Using Dom Objects in PHP, the default namespace is redeclared in some nodes.

  I'm working on a template engine, having migrated from regex driven to DOM driven. It appears though, that whenever I create a DomDocumentFragment to encapsulate some portion of a document temporarily, the namespace attribute is added to each node in the fragment. Since my default namespace for a given document will 99% of the time be XHTML, it's adding the XHTML namespace declaration. Being the default namespace, this seems fruitless, and ultimately nodes in any other namespace will be stripped out at render time anyways. Aside from iteratively removing namespace attributes, is there some way I can prevent this from occurring to begin with? Its quite problematic, as this will likely increase render time filesize considerably, as large portions of a given document may be stored in a fragment. I've tried $doc->normalizeDocument(), but as I assumed, it did nothing.

  typedef enum BeNeLux { BELGIUM, NETHERLANDS, LUXEMBURG } _PACKAGE_ BeNeLux; When I try to compile this with C++ Compiler, I am getting errors, but it seems to work fine with a C compiler. So here's the question. Is it possible to pack an enum in C++, or can someone see why I would get the error? The error is: "semicolon missing after declaration of BeNeLux". I know, after checking and rechecking, that there definitely is a semicolon there, and in any places required in the rest of the code.

  I'm trying to find a standard macro which will test whether a header file is being compiled as C or as C++. The purpose of this is that the header may be included by either C or C++ code, and must behave slightly differently depending on which. Specifically: In C, I need this to be the code: extern size_t insert (const char*); In C++, I need this to be the code: extern "C" size_t insert (const char*); Additionally, is there a way to avoid putting #ifdef's around every declaration in the header?
