• Which features of user story management should an agile team look for?

  In my research study, I need to identify the key features of user story management tools that can be used to support agile development. So far, I identified the following general groups of features: User role modeling and personas support, User stories and epics management, Acceptance testing support, High-level release planning, Low-level iteration planning, and Progress tracking. Each group contains some specific features, e.g., support for story points, writing of acceptance tests, etc. Which features of user story management should an agile team look for especially when switching from tangible tools (index cards, pin boards and big visible charts) to a software tool? • Self-documenting code vs Javadocs?

  Recently I've been working on refactoring parts of the code base I'm currently dealing with - not only to understand it better myself, but also to make it easier for others who are working on the code. I tend to lean on the side of thinking that self-documenting code is nice. I just think it's cleaner and if the code speaks for itself, well... That's great. On the other hand we have documentation such as javadocs. I like this as well, but there's a certain risk that comments here gets outdated (as well as comments in general of course). However, if they are up-to-date they can be extremely useful of say, understanding a complex algorithm. What are the best practices for this? Where do you draw the line between self-documenting code and javadocs?

• Is it time to add IPv6 access to my websites?

  I have several dedicated servers and VPS servers, and some of those are at companies that have provided me with native IPv6 blocks (in addition to the IPv4 IP addresses). Does it currently make sense to point an AAAA record to an IPv6 address on my server, in addition to the A record pointing to the IPv4 address? This would be for (for example) the www subdomain. (the networking and web server software would be set up on the server to respond appropriately). A while ago I read that a small percentage of users (1 in a thousand?) would have slow or no access if a subdomain had both A and AAAA records because their networking software asked for one and got the other. Is that still the case, will adding an AAAA record inconvenience some users, or is the percentage already smaller and falling? In other words, is now the time to get around to adding native IPv6 support for a busy website aimed at the general public, or is it still too early?

• Placing of copyright notice in source code

  I'm about to release a project of mine that I'm really proud of under the GNU GPL and I have some questions: Should one attach a copyright notice on each and every source code file from their project? I think it's a bit ridiculous to claim copyright on a 3 line abstract class. Should I attach a copyright notice only to really important source code files? Can I not attach the whole standard thingy? Because it's big and bulky and gets in the way... If so, is the variant below ok/enough? Copyright year firstname lastname. This program is free software: you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation.

• How essential is it to make a service layer?

  I started building an app in 3 layers (DAL, BL, UI) [it mainly handles CRM, some sales reports and inventory]. A colleague told me that I must move to service layer pattern, that developers came to service pattern from their experience and it is the better approach to design most applications. He said it would be much easier to maintain the application in the future that way. Personally, I get the feeling that it's just making things more complex and I couldn't see much of a benefit from it that would justify that. This app does have an additional small partial ui that uses some (but only few) of the desktop application functions so I did find myself duplicating some code (but not much). Just because of some code duplication I wouldn't convert it to be service oriented, but he said I should use it anyway because in general it's a very good architecture, why programmers are so in love with services?? I tried to google on it but I'm still confused and can't decide what to do.

• how to transform child elements position into a world position

  So Im making a 2d space game and I have a bunch of spaceships that have turrets. Objects have a position and orientation, the ships being in world coordinates while the turrets are children and coordinates are relative to their parents. How do I efficiently calculate the position of a turret in world coordinates (i.e. when it fires and I need to know where to place a bullet in the world)? Calculating the turrets orientation is trivial - I just add the turrets relative angle to its parents. For position though, I guess I could do a bunch of trigonometry but this MUST be a common problem with a good/fast general solution? Should I be relearning how to do matrix math again? :) btw - Im creating the game in javascript+canvas but its the math/algorithm im interested in here Cheers, Greg

• Authenticating users for a website

  I'm working on a website and I want to validate that an individual is an employee at one of a large number of companies (probably using their company's email address, which I don't know before hand). The idea being some users are the general public and others are from these companies. And I need some way to authenticate that the users claiming to be employees are being honest while still having a friendly enough UI. I did an informal survey of people I know and the domains and emails will match in a majority of cases but they might not always match exactly so you might have a company with a website foo.com and an email [email protected] (although foobar.com did redirect back to foo.com). And while I can easily check that I'm not sure what other variations might be out there (maybe fooLA.com and email [email protected], etc.)

• Value of links on negative review pages

  A general assumption with SEO is more links = higher rankings. What I would like to know is does Google know what those links are referring to. I.e. if somebody gives a product a good review on their personal blog and links the review to another companies website (who are selling the product), would Google take consideration for the review/description link. Essentially would Google know that this link refers to a product. So if somebody is looking to buy a product, Google would know to include this page because the previous link said it sells products rather than just having information on products. Then to take this further, does Google know if a link is positive or negative. For example, If somebody creates a post saying, do not visit example.com, example.com is bad because of blah blah blah. Would Google know that the link is getting bad feedback and therefore would it have a negative affect on rankings, or would Google go oh its just another link and give it better rankings?

• Ubuntu 12.04 boot freezes

  I installed win7 on one of my machines. It works without any problem. Now I can not install Ubuntu 12.04 (11.10, 11.04) because the installation process stops in a very early stage: I can see that ISOLinux was loaded, then I can see some very simple icons, then I can see text messages of the kernel. The last message I can see: [6.177983] sr 5:0:0:0: attached scsi general ss1 type 5 At that point the system stops. I tried different versions (11.04) , I disabled, and then disconnected the hdd, but the same problem occured independently from my actions. I can boot a gparted live cd, but that system can not see my hdd. On the other hand, I can boot the installation cd of the latest stable Debian distribution without any problem, but I would prefer to use Ubuntu, because I use that distribution on all of our machines.s Configuration: Asus P8H61-MLE motheboard, Gigabyte GTS 450, Intel i5, 4gb ram, wd 1T sata hdd Any idea?   What are some good examples of whitespace being the cause of any type of error and/or total disruption of scripts and/or markups? I am more interested in any accounts related to languages that are used commonly today, but I would like to hear about any cases in general. • 'Situations gone wrong' for web apps...

  Hi all I know there's some decent material floating around relating to more specific areas, but wanted to get some opinions from people who have had bad experiences in the past. I have a project where I can have a say on the design of a B2C web app, which has some external API interfaces. UX is crucial as is speed. Not sure what technology will be used at this stage. In designing this application, I want to make sure obvious features are not left out (i.e. ones that make maintenance/development easier). So can you guys tell me about 'situations gone wrong' that could have been avoided had more consideration taken place? Am looking to gather feedback in general, so don't worry if your example is industry/technology specific - so long as it pertains to web. Thanks for reading, I look forward to your responses!

• Red Gate join the SSIS custom component club

  I recently noticed that Red Gate have launched themselves into the SSIS component market by releasing a new Data Cleanser component, albeit in beta for now. It seems to be quite a simple component, bringing together several features that you can find elsewhere, but with a suitable level  polish that you’d expect from them. String operations include find and replace with regular expressions, case formatting and trim, all of which are available today in one form or another, but will the RedGate factor appeal to people? Benefits include ease of use, all operations in one place, versus installing a custom component which many organisations do not like. I’m also interested to see where they take this and SSIS products in general, as it almost seems too simple for RedGate, a company I normally associate with more advanced problem solving. Perhaps they are just dipping a toe in the water with a simple component for now?

• How do I disable window move with alt + left mouse button in GNOME Shell?

  There are lots of posts on this about Unity, this is about gnome-shell As with other posters, I use apps (Inkscape in particular) that uses Alt-Click and Alt-drag. Gnome-shell is grabbing this off me and thus disabling features in the application. I have tried using ccsm's Move plugin - you can turn this off and you still get Alt-drag window moving. using gconf editor to change /apps/metacity/general/mouse_button_modifier - this has no effect AFAICS. It's really hindering me. Otherwise I find gnome-shell a really productive environment.

• Are "Compile to JavaScript" Frameworks Hostile to Continuous Integration?

  Lately we've been looking at ways to improve automated testing and related tooling of our enterprise-level GWT web app. I've realized that in some ways, GWT is a bit hostile to automated testing, mainly because of the nature of the long GWT compile times from Java to JS. This makes unit testing somewhat challenging, but it also puts some roadblocks up for testing in a CI environment. I've also found out that some of our build and deployment processes are somewhat complicated due to the nature of GWT's compile process. Is this a general problem for "compile to JS" frameworks for webapps? I don't have much experience with them, but I can see some potential problems for automated testing and continuous integration and deployment. Some issues I see: Long build and compile times preventing quick deployments Language the app is developed in != JS, preventing good unit testing Obfuscated JS in the actual app makes it more like a executable than a web app Are these issues present in other similar frameworks, or is this more a GWT issue?

• Starting small custom development company, type of niches to target?

  This is kind of a new years thing for me as I want to be more entrepreneurial going forward with programming and this is kind of a general question for anyone who may share the same ambitions as me. I have experience with web programming and, although I work full time for a company doing programming, I have some freelance programmers that I work with / employ for small projects. I want to see about taking things to the next level as far as building a small company doing custom development. I'm just not sure how to figure out what niches to target as far as what type of apps to build as demos, etc. I was thinking mobile (maybe Android or Iphone) but am just curious if anyone has any advice / resources. A lot of "web development" seems to end up being just using a CMS like Joomla or Wordpress, for smaller sites, so I want to figure a way to steer clear of this crowd and find some opportunity with companies / entrepreneurs who actually need real programming development done to build apps. So why would I be getting js error logged as if it was a script being run on my own site? This is using elmah logging.

  I was told once that the best place to work as a developer is a company where the software you write is what makes the company money, whether it be software production or software services like consulting. This is opposed to a company where the software you write is just to support some other part of the business that makes the money, like manufacturing or finance. I know there are always exceptions, but in general, are employees treated better if they are on the front lines of profit generation, as opposed to being just another cost center? cost center (n.) - A cost center is part of an organization that does not produce direct profit and adds to the cost of running a company. Examples of cost centers include research and development departments, marketing departments, help desks and customer service/contact centers.

  Is there a general class or ID for a html element that a high majority of popular adblockers will block on a website it has no information for. My intention is to have my advertisement blocked, avoiding automatic blocking is easy enough...   ok first I'm not sure if this is right stackexchange site to ask but I'm not sure if there is better one as question is quite general When I visit one site, and if this site runs google adsense campaign, I can see its ads on other sites. I suppose this is cookie from this site and than it's showing ads using the cookie However, I removed this specific cookie and cleared cache, and I can still see this same ad showing on other sites running adsense My question is, is there is something wrong with google chrome, is there a possibility that Google stores data within google chrome itself? If not, how else they could trace which ads to show?

• Is it a good practice to use branches to maintain different editions of the same software?

  We have a product that has a few different editions. The differences are minor: different strings here and there, very little additional logic in one, very little difference in logic in the other. When the software is being developed, most changes need to be added to each edition; however, there are a few that don't and a few that needs to differ. Is it a valid use of branches if I have release-editionA and release-editionB (..etc) branches? Are there any gotchas? Good practices? Update: Thanks for the insight everyone, lots of good answers here. The general consensus seems to be that it is a bad idea to use branches for this purpose. For anyone wondering, my final solution to the problem is to externalize strings as configuration, and externalize the differing logic as plugins or scripts.
