• Building a rails form to filter an index page?

  G'day guys, I'm having an issue with filtering the presentation of several thousand trade items I have in my system. As per the specs of the system we're building we have to have a form that allows people to put in a start date and then an interval in minutes, to filter the presentation of the items. I've built my helper functions to return all of the trades within that interval period, but I can't for the life of me properly build the form that will return a dateTime value and an integer value within the top of the index page? Any ideas? Would I have to build a separate model object to assign values to, or is there a simpler way?

  I try to get this following url using the downloadURL function: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/27884304 But the data is not as what we can see through the browser. Now I know it's because that I need to give the correct information such as browser, how can I know what kind of information I need to set, and how can I set it? (By setHeader function??) In VC++, we can use CInternetSession and CHttpConnection Object to get the correct information without setting any other detail information, is there any similar way in Qt or other cross-platform C++ network lib?? • Multiple Service Address Configs in WCF Silverlight App

  My team is building our first significant Silverlight application, using a 3 layered architecture and WCF. We have developed about 10 separate WCF services in the middle layer so far, and this number is only going to grow. Generally, the presentation layer (ie. the Silverlight app) is pointing to the services as hosted on our dev server. However, there are times when I want it to access the services from localhost - ie. the developers machine. Is there an easy way to change where the presentation layer is looking for the services? Is there some way of easily switching between options here?

• Integrating JSF with Spring

  I haven't implemented any code, I'm still working the overall architecture for a new application and this going to be the first time I use JSF+Spring. I need to put web services in front of the Spring service beans (business logic tier) since these beans could be accessed by other applications besides the presentation tier. While defining the different layers or tiers for the application, I feel unsure about how to integrate JSF (the presentation tier) with Spring (the business tier in this application). I'm considering to define some sort of common tier or service tier in order to provide the glue code for JSF and Spring, but before that I want to hear from others what have they done or if they have used other frameworks to help with the glue code for this scenario (I already checked Spring MVC/Spring Faces, but I'm not sure if that's what I need since I'm thinking of this application more like JSF-centric than Spring-centric, but maybe you could help me about considering another approach). • What are some good ways to store performance statistics in a database for querying later?

  Goal: Store arbitrary performance statistics of stuff that you care about (how many customers are currently logged on, how many widgets are being processed, etc.) in a database so that you can understand what how your servers are doing over time. Assumptions: A database is already available, and you already know how to gather the information you want and are capable of putting it in the database however you like. Some Ideal Attributes of a Solution Causes no noticeable performance hit on the server being monitored Has a very high precision of measurement Does not store useless or redundant information Is easy to query (lends itself to gathering/displaying useful information) Lends itself to being graphed easily Is accurate Is elegant Primary Questions 1) What is a good design/method/scheme for triggering the storing of statistics? 2) What is a good database design for how to actually store the data? Example answers...that are sort of vague and lame... 1) I could, once per [fixed time interval], store a row of data with all the performance measurements I care about in each column of one big flat table indexed by timestamp and/or server. 2) I could have a daemon monitoring performance stuff I care about, and add a row whenever something changes (instead of at fixed time intervals) to a flat table as in #1. 3) I could trigger either as in #2, but I could store information about each aspect of performance that I'm measuring in separate tables, opening up the possibility of adding tons of rows for often-changing items, and few rows for seldom-changing items. Etc. In the end, I will implement something, even if it's some super-braindead approach I make up myself, but I'm betting there are some really smart people out there willing to share their experiences and bright ideas!

And in a web page of SAP, I can only upload RSS, so I need put the information of the web services in the RSS For example, I put the information manually(name and total value) in the fields <title> and <descripcion>, these data are extracted from the web services. But sometimes I don´t know how much information brings the web service. • Utilising cssText to set styles with JavaScript

  I was going through Nicholas Zakas presentation on JavaScript here : http://www.slideshare.net/nzakas/writing-efficient-javascript (slide number: 89/139) He recommends using cssText property whenever you are setting a bunch of styles through JavaScript. The best solution is obviously adding those styles to a class and then using JS to add the classname to an element.However, in many situations, We resort to just setting the properties directly within JS when the number of properties are low. It seems from his presentation that using cssText property would be more efficient in such scenarios.I tried to look up more on the property but couldn't find much information. Has anyone used the 'cssText' property ? It would be great to have some more technical info on how the property helps.

• How to get notified about changes on SharePoint groups.

  Hi, I'm actual looking for a way to get notified about any changes on a SharePoint group. First I though I would be able to this by attaching a event handler to some kind of group list. But unfortunately there are no such list representing SharePoint groups. My second attempt was to bind a event handler to the content type SharePointGroup but this didn't work either. So are there any other options to get notified about events on a SharePoint group? Bye, Flo EDIT: Thanks for the reply so far. I forgot to mention that I've already googled and read about the user information list. Sorry. First I found a forum entry where they post the relative URL to the user information list (_catalogs/users/simple.aspx). When I'm using this link to see the list,it only contains users and no groups. I don't know but perhaps this link does some filtering on the list. The other information I found about in several blog and forum posts was that a event handler attached to the user information list are not fired up on an events. I have to admit after reading that it doesn't work so many times and even on MSDN (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa979520.aspx), I didn't try it on my own. The problem attaching the event handler to the content type wasn't the attaching thing, the handler simply didn't get fired when I for example changed a group name or deleted a user from the group. I don't have an idea why the handler doesn't get called I pretty sure I implemented the right methods and attached them to the right events. Any other suggestions how to get informed about changes on SharePoint groups?

• Domain model: should things like Logging, Audit, Persistence be in it

  I'm having a hard time convincing our architect that a Domain model should only have the essential elements of the business domain on it. Things like the fact that a class is persistable, that it needs logging and auditing and that it has a RESTful URI should not drive the domain model. They can be added later on, by using interfaces. Ours is a healthcare information management system. At the very coarse level, its a system where users login and access their healthcare information. They can share this information with others and be custodian for others' information (think Roles). But because of a few sound bytes that caught on early like "Everything should be a REST resource" the model now has a top level class called Resource that every other class extends from. I'm trying to make him see that the domain model should have well defined concepts like User Account, HealthDocument, UserRole etc which are distinct entities of the business , with specific associations between them. Clubbing everything under Resource class lets our model be inflexible besides being potentially incorrect. But he wants me to show him why its a bad idea to do it his way. I don't know how to articulate that properly but all my OO instincts tell me that its just not right. Any thoughts?

• Structuring System Architecture in a Flex Web Application on a Budget (w/o Java)

  I started a project a while back using the following architecture from Adobe Developer Article talking about Creating marketing platforms in Flex. I did my first set of coding locally forgetting that my server did not handle Tomcat. So I said okay, and cut some corners and then some other limitation came up and I cut some more corners. Eventually for a good week or two, it was trying to get the project working with making the ends meet. Layers started to merge. In the end I used a PureMVC (Presentation/Client) - ZendAMF (Communication) - MySql (Data) Layout. It worked but I never felt as though I had some layer just to take care of all the SQL calls to the data.It just felt hacked together So should I keep the above setup and just start from the presentation layer and move downwards like they said in the article or is there a better layering (based on a hosting plan that does not handle Java) I could accomplish ? NOTE: I would just ask the adobe guys but they barely reply on their site. Thanks !

• MVC: Submit one form from a page with multiple forms

  I'm working in an ASP.NET 3.5 MVC application where i've got a view with multiple forms in it. Form 1 contains information about products and will form a shoppingcart with a remove button. When i use the submit button on the second form everything seems to be submitted and the action in the controller for the first form is trying to handle the request. That is where the error occurce because the information in the viewmodel isn't corresponding to what is being expected. • complex web forms and javascript

  I need to create a few data heavy complicated forms. Currently, the information is being entered into a spread sheet, but the users will need to enter the information into the online form where it will be saved to a database. The problem is that the business users currently using the spread sheet aren't going to want to use the online application if it isn't as easy as entering the information into the spread sheet. This is further complicated in that the information they are entering into the spread sheet is represented by three different DB tables where one "object" is composed of two of the others. I would prefer to not have them have to go through multiple forms. Some of what I have been thinking is: Use of auto complete where possible Hiding/removing form fields dynamically possible wizard style page flow?? I've been googling for other data heavy web forms but can't seem to really find any good examples. I am familiar with jQuery and prototypejs and have also tried googling for frameworks designed for data heavy applications but didn't come up with anything. Any thoughts? Thanks.

• Updating a local sqlite db that is used for local metadata & caching from an service?

  I've searched through the site and haven't found a question/answer that quite answer my question, the closest one I found was: Syncing objects between two disparate systems best approach. Anyway to begun, because there is no RSS feeds available, I'm screen scrapping a webpage, hence it does a fetch then it goes through the webpage to scrap out all of the information that I'm interested in and dumps that information into a sqlite database so that I can query the information at my leisure without doing repeat fetching from the website. However I'm also storing various metadata on the data itself that is stored in the sqlite db, such as: have I looked at the data, is the data new/old, bookmark to a chunk of data (Think of it as a collection of unrelated data, and the bookmark is just a pointer to where I am in processing/reading of the said data). So right now my current problem is trying to figure out how to update the local sqlite database with new data and/or changed data from the website in a manner that is effective and straightforward. Here's my current idea: Download the page itself Create a temporary table for the parsed data to go into Do a comparison between the official and the temporary table and copy updates and/or new information to the official table This process seems kind of complicated because I would have to figure out how to determine if the data in the temporary table is new, updated, or unchanged. So I am wondering if there isn't a better approach or if anyone has any suggestion on how to architecture/structure such system?

• WPF/.NET data access models - resource recommendations

  We're in the early design/prep phases of transferring/updating a rather large "legacy" 3 tier client-server app to a new version. We’re looking at doing WPF over Winforms as it appears to be the direction Microsoft is pushing development of the future and we’d like the maximize the life cycle/span of the apps. That said during the rewrite we’d like to make as many changes to our data access/presentation model to improve performance as much as possible up front as many. I’ve been doing some research along that vein but the vast majority of the resources I've found that discuss WPF focus only simple data tracking apps or focus on the very basics UI design/controls. The few items that even discuss data presentation are fairly elementary in depth. Are there any books/articles/recommended reading/other resources recommended for development related to large enterprise level business apps? Any “gotchas” that should/could be avoided? General advice to minimize the time underwater

  I have a WPF application that stores a large amount of information in XML files and as the user uses the application they add more information to the XML files. It's basically using the XML files as a database. Since over the life of the program the XML files have gotten quite large, and I've been think about putting the data on a website, I've been looking into how to move all the information into an SQL database. I've used SQL databases with web applications (PHP, Ruby, and ASP.NET) but never with a Desktop application. Ideally I'd like to be able to keep all the information in one database file and distribute it along with the application without requiring the user to connect to a remote database (so they don't need an internet connection - though eventually it would be nice if could compare the local file's version with one online somewhere and update if necessary) and without making them install a local database server on their computer. Is this possible? I'd also like to use LINQ with any new database solution so switching to a database doesn't force to many changes (I read the XML with LINQ). I'm sure this question has been asked and that there are already some good tutorials on the subject but I just can't find them.

• Calculating moving average/stdev in SAS?

  Hye guys, I included a screenshot to help clarify my problem: http://i40.tinypic.com/mcrnmv.jpg. I'm trying to calculate some kind of moving average and moving standard deviation. The thing is I want to calculate the coefficients of variation (stdev/avg) for the actual value. Normally this is done by calculating the stdev and avg for the past 5 years. However sometimes there will be observations in my database for which I do not have the information of the past 5 years (maybe only 3, 2 etc). That's why i want a code that will calculate the avg and stdev even if there is no information for the whole 5 years. Also, as you see in the observations, sometimes I have information over more than 5 years, when this is the case I need some kind of moving average which allows me to calculate the avg and stdev for the past 5 year. So if a company has information for 7 years I need some kind of code that will calculate the avg and stdev for, lets say, 1997 (by 1991-1996), 1998 (by 1992-1997) and 1999 (1993-1998). As i'm not very familiar with sas commands it should look (very very roughly) like: set var if year = i then stdev=stdev(year(i-6) untill year(i-1)) and average = avg(year(i-6) untill year(i-1)) Or something like this, I really have no clue, I'm gonna try and figure it out but it's worth posting it if I won't find it myself. • Is there a way to retrieve the Computer Name of a Xenapp client?

  What options exist for identifying the client name of a particular client from within the process running on Citrix Presentation 4.0, or Xenapp 5, and are there any important differences in retrieving this information in either scenario? Currently my software is a client that connects to a service on a server, and the primary means of identification are computer name and IP Address. When installed on a Citrix Presentation server, all running instances currently show the same Computer Name and IP Address, which are those of the server. My application is written in VB 6.0, however I am looking to implement the new feature in C# .NET. Any help or clarification on the question itself would be appreciated, as I am not experienced with developing for Citrix thin clients.

• Changing the HTML of CKEditor form elements (in the dialog window)

  I'm trying to modify the HTML of the dialog boxes in CKEditor. The HTML inside each of those boxes is an absolute nightmare, and even worse, the source code is compressed and it's unclear what the path of execution is. • Why state cannot be part of Presenter in MVP?

  I read http://www.codeproject.com/KB/architecture/MVC_MVP_MVVM_design.aspx and it said: As powerful as they are, both MVC and MVP have their problems. One of them is persistence of the View’s state. For instance, if the Model, being a domain object, does not know anything about the UI, and the View does not implement any business logic, then where would we store the state of the View’s elements such as selected items? Fowler comes up with a solution in the form of a Presentation Model pattern. I wonder why Presenter can't hold View state? It already holds all View logic. As far as I understand, in MVC and MVP the state is kept in View. In PM and MVVM the state is kept in the Presentation Model. Why can't Presenter follow PM in this particular case and contain the state of the view? • From Sinatra Base object. Get port of application including the base object

  I have a Sinatra::Base object that I would like to include in all of my web apps. In that base class I have the configure method which is called on start-up. I would like that configure code to 'register' that service with a centralized database. The information that needs to be sent when registering is the information on how to contact this web-service... things like host and port. I then plan on having a monitoring service that will spin over all registered services and occasionally ping them to make sure they are still up and running. In the configure method I am having trouble getting the port information. The 'self.settings.port' variable doesn't seem to work in this method. a) any ideas on how to get the port? I have the host. b) is there a sinatra plug-in that already does something like this so I don't have to write it myself? :-) //in my Sinatra::Base code. lets call it register_me.rb RegisterMe < Sinatra::Base configure do //save host and port information to database end get '/check_status' //return status end //in my web service code require register_me //at this point, sinatra will initialize the RegisterMe object and call configure post ('/blah') //example of a method for this particular web service end

• Data Access Layer in ASP.Net: Where do I create the Connection?

  If I want to create a 3-Layer ASP.Net application (Presentation Layer, Business Layer, Data Access Layer), where is the best place to create the Connection objects? So far I used a helper class in my Presentation Layer to create an IDbCommand from the ConnectionString in the web.config on each page and passed it on to the DAL classes/methods. Now I am not so sure, if this part shouldn't also be included in the DAL somehow, because it obviously is part of the Data Access. The DAL is in a separately compilated project, so I dont have access to the web.config and cannot access the connection string (right?). What is the best practice here?
