• print job doesn't go to print queue

  I have two printers hooked up to my intel imac. I am having a printing error. It seems that whenever i try to print (a simple text doc) I am unable to get the print job to go to print queue with one of my printers. I have a HP c7280 and a HP c3100. I am able to get one working properly, but the other doesn't seem to allow it to go to the print queue. I have switched usb cables (with the printer that I know works) and both printers are recognized by the computer in the printer preferences pane. I've tried reseting the printer system in the printer setup utility.. reloaded the drivers from HP.. etc. If anyone has a suggestion or could point me to a little help i'd be VERY grateful Best Regards.. • VMware + SQL Server - sqlserver.exe not using both CPU cores

  Hi, I am working on a virtual machine that runs SQL Server Express (as part of Sage Line 50 Manufacturing). The details are as follows: Physical Server (host machine) - Intel Xeon Quad Core 2.1GHz - 4GB RAM - VMDK image stored on RAID-5 500GB SATA drives (7200RPM) - Running Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64 bit - VMware Server 2 Virtual Machine - Windows Small Business Server 2003 - Allocated 2 vCPU's and 2GB RAM - Using 100GB pre-allocated flat VMDK file The problem I have is that there is process that runs in SQL Server that is CPU intensive. On the old physical server that we migrated to the virtual machine from, this would utilise both CPU cores so the sqlserver.exe process would be running 100% on each of the CPU cores. On the virtual machine, it only seems to use one of the two CPU cores, meaning that the process is much slower to run. Question Is there a way to force SQL Server (sqlserver.exe process) to use both of the CPU cores, and distribute it's load between them? Is this a VMware setting that needs changing to allow processes to use both cores?

• Can I run Linux on the HP Mini from Verizon Wireless, with a built-in 3G modem, and connect using the built in modem?

  I apologize if my question made little sense, I am very tired at the moment. Anyway, Recently I purchases the HP Mini from Verizon Wireless. It runs on the Intel Atom processor and came with Windows 7 Starter Edition, which is quite possibly the worst and most restrictive OS I have ever used. I plan on installing CRUX, after doing a little research on minimal, free, Linux operating systems, as I am working on web programming using Python, among other things. My only worry is that, because my HP Mini uses a built in wireless card (and I have no wifi connection, only a 3G connection) that has a "mobile access" connection to Verizon wireless, I am not sure if after installing CRUX that I would still be able to connect using this option. I have never used Linux before, and am hoping this will work. So if anybody has experience with this...please answer, can I connect to vzw 3G with linux, using an internal mobile access card...

• Macbook superdrive got calibration problems

  I have an intel macbook dual 2Ghz, bought about three years ago. I've had some problems with the superdrive and changed it a year and a half ago. the drive is Matshita DVD-R UJ 857 now I'm into burning cd's again and try to burn a DVD with Toast Titanium from an .iso on my hard drive But it won't work. When I launch the burn, the disc suddenly stops turning, and an error log pops: medium error, sense code = 0x73, 0x03 then I try with the built in cd burner of the macbook as soon as I click burn, the cd stops turning in the drive, and error log says peripheral couldn't calibrate power of the laser required for medium so since I'm not that logical of a geek, I try my first idea: let's see with other brands of DVD! the problem is that it works, now. but I'd like for all of my medium to be usable, and I've already seen my ridata DVD being burn, so here's the question. What the hell is happening with my superdrive? :)

  Recently I bought an Intel Core i7 Dell laptop fully integrated. I have an ATi Radeon 1 gb ram graphic card and so on. Everything works fine even the brightness, but when I try the multi touch multi finger(touchpad which enables two or more finger) the pointer jump and go there and go here and so It's very annoying because when I'm trying to write this question I cannot let the pointer be cool! when I accidentally the touchpad it is very annoying. How can I fix this ?

• High load on a nagios server -- How many service checks for a nagios server is too many?

  I have a nagios server running Ubuntu with a 2.0 GHz Intel Processor, a RAID10 array, and 400 MB of RAM. It monitors a total of 42 services across 8 hosts, most of which are checked using the check_http plugin even 5 minutes, some every minute. Recently the load on the nagios server has been above 4, often as high as 6. The server also runs cacti, gathering statistics every minute for 6 hosts. I wonder, how many services should hardware like this be able to handle? Is the load so high because I am pushing the limits of the hardware, or should this hardware be able to handle 42 service checks plus cacti? If the hardware is inadequate, should I look to add more RAM, more cores, or faster cores? What hardware / service checks are others running?

• How much power supply do I need for my server, and could a shortage be causing my odd crashing?

  I have 5 servers, all with similar hardware (i7, four 2tb 7200rpm drives, two 4tb 5400rpm drives, 430 watt power supply), and lately the machines have been freezing up. This has gotten worse in the last day or so, and I can't pinpoint any explanation. One recent change was adding the two 4tb hard drives. The crashes happen most often while running a large Hadoop job, so I was originally thinking the load was causing some issues, but last night one server just froze without any heavy load on the box (or so I think), other than HDFS (Hadoop's distributed file system) was probably rebalancing itself since two of the five nodes were offline. If I plugin a monitor and keyboard to one of these frozen machines, I can't get any response or feedback on the screen. Any ideas on possible points of failure and/or different logs I can look at to investigate? • No display but video card fans spins

  Since I moved my computer there's no display when I plug my screen in the video card but works fine in the mother board. I tried reseting the cmos, but I still have the same problem. The fans are spining and there's a light from the card. I tried the DVI ports and the HDMI Here's my build. I have it for 2 months and everything was working fine. Do you think it's the video card? • Centos 6 - How to upgrade module located inside initramfs?

  We have recently upgraded our e1000e (intel ethernet) module on one of our centos 6.0 boxes. Even tho the module compile and installed fine, the old version is still being used. We have tracked this down to the fact that the e1000e.ko module is located inside the initamfs file for the booting kernel and thus, even tho the module located in /lib/modules/.... was being updated, the old one is still being loaded from inside the initramfs file. After some research, we have found that creating a new initamfs file in centos should be as simple as: /sbin/dracut <initramfs> <kernel-version> Can someone confirm that this is a safe way to basically recreate the initamfs file? This is a non-locally hosted (1000's of km away...) box, and getting support to resolve this if a reboot is unsuccessful will lead to quite a bit of down time. Thanks.

  I'm trying to set up an Web Server running Ubuntu server to host some Java web applications, with MySQL running on it, an so on .. here is the tutorial I follow: perfect server ubuntu 11.10 The server configuration is: CPU S1155 INTEL Pentium G850 2.9GHz VGA 5GTs 3MB 65W MB Gigabyte GA-H77-D3H Ram 4x4Gb HDD 5x1TB Seagate (4 in RAID5 and 1 for Backup) The problem is that when I am trying to install the Server version of Ubuntu, when the installer asks me whether to activate ATA RAID Devices, and I click yes, he sees only that one, if I click no, he sees all 5 HDD's separate without any RAID, is this normal? I also tried to install the Desktop version on RAID5, but after restart, Ubuntu does't want to boot up, an underscore stands on the top of the screen. I am a newbie in servers and their configuration, in fact I am developer. I need a help from you guys.

• VPS hang when one Virtual CPU usage is 100%

  We are using Xen Center to manage all of our cPanel VPS servers. The hardware has two CPUs(Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU [email protected]) and 32GB memory. Each hardware has 4 cPanel VPS and each VPS has 8GB memory and 4 Virtual CPUS. Every one or two months, one of the VPS server will hang because one Virtual CPU usage is 100% and it couldn't release the CPU unless we use force reboot. We have 10 similar hardware, and this cause our server down almost every day. We have tried to avoid the Statistics Processing and Fantastico update during the night, but the problem still happens randomly. I can not find anything in the server log when it hangs. Any clue?   I read many times Windows 7 is unable to boot from an external FireWire drive but I wonder if Windows 8 is able to do so. I need to run Windows on my Mac but only very few times so my idea was to move it all to an external drive. I have one of the first Intel Macs so running Windows in a virtual machine is not really fun. The performance is just too poor. Adding a Boot Camp partition to my internal drive is also not possible at the moment.

  I have a situation here, is kind of weird. Situation as below: If i enable the 'Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 27CC' , then my pc will not be able to read any USB stick/pendrive, but usb port work fine with keyboard and mouse. If I disable the device driver, then all kind of pendrive can be read. Below is What i have done : 1) try the same pendrive on other pc, it work like charm. 2) try others pendrive on issue pc, same problem, but it work fine in others pc. 3) try all the port, including the port that connected to mouse n keyboard. 4) update the driver version. 5) restore default setting of usb in bios Please help to solve these issue if anyone experience it before. • PC won't boot with 4 prong CPU connector connected. Motherboard or CPU dead - which one? Both?

  In the middle of use, my computer shut down. I tried to turn it on but it maybe comes on for half a second, shuts down, then flickers again very quickly about 2 seconds later before giving up completely. So I took everything apart and nailed it down to the power supply, the mobo, or the CPU. I had an extra old power supply around, hooked that up and it had the same problems, so that can't be it. When the 4 prong CPU connector is not connected, the motherboard 'functions' in that it stays on and runs the heat sink etc. Throw in the 4 prong connector and that's when it doesn't stay on. So it must be the CPU, right? Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D CPU: Intel i7-920 Bot are under warranty (supposedly) - should I get both replaced or what?

• My Network adapter "D-Link DWA-547" is causing windows 7 to freeze up.

  Any audio playing, and sometimes the program i am using is constantly stuttering and freezing up. I have narrowed the offending hardware down to my: D-Link DWA-547 RangeBooster N650 Desktop Adapter If i disable it in the device manager everything runs fine and smooth. The card works, and gives me super fast internet. But the rest of the system hangs. I have tried installing the card with the drivers from the cd that came with it, i also tried the lates beta drivers from the d-link webpage, but the problem persists. What do i do? I am running windows 7 x64 on a asus p5b motherboard with 2 intel processors.

  Hello Everyone, I have a problem on a brand new Windows 7 Lenovo T510 intel I5/4gb ram. When I got the Laptop, right off the bat i noticed that it would freeze up often on th most simple tasks. After a while I got fed up and reinstalled. All that is installed currently is AVG/Firefox/Office.   For some reason, when I go to links the pages seem slow and heavy. It also has a lot of lag spikes between page loads. Basically it seems to freeze then load it all at once fast. • Enterprise laptop doesn't recognize WiFi

  My cousin is using an enterprise laptop for home work, but for some reason she can't connect to her home WiFi. The laptop isn't able to detect any WiFi networks, although she used to be able to detect and connect to the network. Whenever I troubleshoot for possible issues, Windows Vista is telling me the switch for wireless reception is turned off, but I'm sure it's turned on (If I turn it on, the HP Wireless Assistant tells me it's turned on, so...). But if I take a look at the settings, I get this message (sorry it's in Dutch): So for some reason, the WLAN reception is deactivated and I cannot activate this... Does this have something to do with the laptop being an enterprise laptop? Or is there a simple setting I missed? The most recent driver of the Wireless Network Card (Intel Wireless 5100) is installed.

• Problem with screen redrawing at DOS app in VmWare Player

  I have very old DOS Application (CadSoft Eagle - PCB Designer) and I want to work with it on my workstation with Windows 7. Then I install Windows 98 and that software into VmWare Player. But that software has serious problem with redrawing screen. It's very slow in comparison with my Intel Celeron 333MHz with Windows 98. I have same problem if I try to use DOSBox on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz). I also trying run this application directly on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz) with compatibility mod set to "Windows 98", but I get "(0Dh): General Protection Fault". Can someone give me good advice how I solve that?

• Computer temporarily freezes and then resumes

  This happens on ALL operating systems (7, Ubuntu, etc.). What happens is everything for 1-3 seconds becomes unresponsive, I then hear what sounds like my other internal hard drive 'spinning up', and then viola everything is responsive again. Note: Already ran SMART tests, no issues at all. I think issue is that the HDD spins down and when need it gets 'turned-on' (OS settings turn off HDD's after 20 mins of inactivity) and because my pagefile is on the other HDD it causes OS to temporarily freeze. Need more tips, and insight. Thanks More info: Running Quad CPU, 4GB RAM, Intel SSD, GT 240.
