• There was an error getting information about "/" while copying to desktop

  Currently running Ubuntu 13.10 after a fresh install/re install due to this problem. The error occurs whenever I try to drag a file from the Ubuntu search( in the launcher ), to the desktop. the whole error message is as follows... "Error while copying. There was an error getting information about “/”." Show more details reveals the following... "The specified location is not supported" I don't understand the problem and can't see any clear way of fixing it. Any and all advice would be appreciated. :)

• Structuring an input file

  I am in the process of structuring a small program to perform some hydraulic analysis of pipe flow. As I am envisioning this, the program will read an input file, store the input parameters in a suitable way, operate on them and finally output results. I am struggling with how to structure the input file in a sane way; that is, in a way that a human can write it easily and a machine can parse it easily. A sample input file made available to me for a similar program is just a stream of comma-separated numbers that don't make much sense on their own, so that's the scenario I am trying to avoid. Though I am giving the details of my particular problem, I am more interested in general input-file structuring strategies. Is a stream of comma-separated values my best bet? Would I be better off using some sort of key:value structure? I don't know much about this, so any help will probably put me in a better track than I am now.

Up until now, if you have to connect to TFS 2010 from other platforms - be it Linux, Mac, Solaris etc., you had to purchase a CAL (Client Access License) or a 90-day free trial of the Team Explorer Everywhere 2010. You don't have to do that anymore. Microsoft has made it free and released an update with Team Explorer Everywhere with SP1. • How to teach your users/customers to send better error descriptions

  I often have to deal with customers or users which are reporting errors in applications. Most of the time their content is something useless as ERROR!!! x does not work without much more information. For resolving the issue I have to request every single detail of them, which often is more time consuming than fixing the issue itself. Other send information in formats which are not ideal, like screenshots (of data records, not of errors) although they could send a link (we have access to the systems) and so on. How do you tell your users/customers to describe the problems with more details so that the whole process could be easier for both sides? edit This question is more about the social skills, than how to achieve programmatic collection of logs and error information. I'm aware of the fact that this should be part of good software design.

• Problem with the screen resolution on Ubuntu 12.04

  I just installed ubuntu on my laptop. The screen resolution is stuck in 1024x768. The screen is made for 1280x800. When I run xrandr I get: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 800 x 600, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 61.0* 800x600 61.0 1280x800 isn't offered and I get gamma size error. I was going to look into the Xorg.conf file but I couldn't locate it. 1280x800 was displayed in Windows 7 and I think it is being displayed in Grub before ubuntu starts also. Here are some details about my computer: CPU Intel atom D2500 1.86GHz Chipset Intel 945GSE+ICH7M LCD 14" TFT 16:9 Resolution ratio 1280*800 Video Card Intel integrated GMA950 Does anyone know how to fix this?

• Is passing the Model around in this way considered bad practice?

  If I have a view called, for example, ViewDetails that displays user information in labels and has a Model called ViewDetailsModel and if I want to allow the user to click a button to edit some of these details, is it considered bad practice is I pass the entire Model in the markup to a controller method which then assigns the values for another model, using the values stored in the Model that was passed in as a parameter to that action method? If so, should there instead be a service method that gets the data required for the edit view? For example: In the ViewDetails view, the user clicks the edit button which calls an action method in the controller (and passes in the Model object). The action method then uses the data in the Model object to populate another model which will be used for the EditDetails view that will be returned.

• Is programming for me? It seems too rigid and unforgiving.

  This question is a follow-up to: Should I continue to pursue programming based on my experience? I am currently majoring in CS in college and was thinking along similar lines as the above question. I'm fine at math and logic, but I haven't yet found programming to be enjoyable. Although I like the idea of being able to build software, too much of it seems to consist of figuring out tiny details or dealing with annoying bugs. So far I've only done small school projects and the like. Does programming become more enjoyable once you have more experience? How can someone know if a career in it is for them?

There were a couple of warnings at "sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic fglrx-legacy" with update-alternatives. But, at the last step I got "aticonfig: No supported adapters detected". Unity does not start anymore. I only can login to Gnome. How can I get back to a working system?

• System doesn't boot due to a "[drm: drm_crtc_helper_set_config] * error * "

  I have a problem with the new Ubuntu 12.10. It finished installing correctly, but when I restart my computer an error message appears: [15.854296] [drm: drm_crtc_helper_set_config] * error * failed to set mode on [CRTC: 10] * checking battery state [17.814209] [drm: drm_crtc_helper_set_config] * error * failed to set mode on [CRTC: 10] and that screen does not advance.   The best intentions were having me at perhaps posting more than twice a month, and here we are and … well it has been busy. There has been a lot of SharePoint 2010 already in this first number of weeks of the year, a good amount of TFS 2010, but even better working quite actively on two topics that I enjoy quite a bit … Windows Azure and Application Lifecycle Management.  And there is more to come around those two. Through the influencers program with Geekswithblogs and Discountasp.net I got access to a hosted TFS solution that I am currently testing and will be posting my findings and documenting a good amount of information on that process. Another great resource has been fpweb.net, and there will be more details on this too.  Pretty exciting stuff! That is what is going on and what will be coming on here shortly.

• How to make a jar file run on startup & and when you log out?

  I have no idea where to start looking. I've been reading about daemons and didn't understand the concept. More details : I've been writing a crawler which never stops and crawlers over RSS in the internet. The crawler has been written in java - therefore its a jar right now. I'm an administrator on a machine that has Ubuntu 11.04 . There is some chances for the machine to crash , so I'd like the crawler to run every time you startup the machine. Furthermore, I'd like it to keep running even when i logged out. I'm not sure this is possible, but most of the time I'm logged out, and I still want to it crawl. Any ideas? Can someone point me in the right direction? Just looking for the simplest solution.

• Is ROA a specific form of SOA?

  I have read somewhere that ROA (Resource Oriented Architecture) is SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) with specific constraints added. SOA is the abstract term and that ROA is an implementation of SOA with all of the constraints of RESTful services (SOA = concept, ROA = concept + implementation details). I also had my share of posts saying that ROA is REST and that SOA is SOAP and going into the same more or less pertinent comparisons between the two (SOAP and REST that is) etc etc. So just to clear up my confusion: Is ROA a specific form of doing SOA?

• Get exact time of each click - AdWords

  I have an AdWords campaign running and want to get a list with all clicks and the exact time the click occured. And I want to do this without having a tracking code on my homepage. So it needs to be via the API (AdWords/Analytics). You might think know that this is not possible. But big Bid Management tools (e.g. Kenshoo) know all details of every click and they don't have tracking code of my website (only on the success page of my contact form). How is that possible? The dimensions in AdWords only let me group the clicks at the hour level.

  I keep lots of notes as I work - code snippets, TODO lists, account details, links, comments. I currently use plain text files for this - very simple and robust but a bit last-century. I would like features similar to HTML - e.g. to embed pictures, formatting, and crucially hyperlinks within my notes. One particular use-case is an implementation of Getting Things Done - more or less, a collection of hierarchical TODO lists, which I'd implement with hyperlinks between tasks. Most WYSIWYG HTML editors seem to be aimed at web designers, creating beautiful pages for professional websites. Is there a simple tool / editor more appropriate for how I want to use it? (or advice from anyone doing the same)

• mayavi2 installing has problem (ubuntu 12.04)

  I'm using ubuntu 12.04 and python 2.7.3-0ubuntu2 is already installed. I have a problem during installing mayavi2 from ubuntu software center. Error message is : Package dependencies cannot be resolved This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time. Details: The following packages have unmet dependencies mayavi2: Depends: python-numpy (= 1:1.6.1) but 1:1.6.1-6ubuntu1 is to be installed Depends: python-numpy-abi9 but it is a virtual package Depends: python (< 2.8) but 2.7.3-0ubuntu2 is to be installed Depends: python-vtk (= 5.4.2-5) but 5.8.0-5 is to be installed I've searched to solve this problem for a long time but I didn't solve yet.   Two days ago, 23 October 2012, the Kansas Legislative Information System and Services (KLISS) was awarded the 2012 NASCIO Award for Open Government at the NASCIO annual State IT Recognition awards. KLISS is developed by Propylon in partnership with the executive and legislative branches of the Kansas Government involving a complete overhaul of the Legislature's IT systems.
