  • 2 servers on 2 networks in same office

    Hello Gents, My office doesn't have a "server guy" in employ, so I'm stuck with having to fix server issues for now. There are 2 servers in our office, both are file/web servers only accessible via LAN. They are currently on the same network, so no issue there. Problem is, we recently got a static IP to use, but it's with a different ISP, so now we have 2 routers in our office. I would like to open one of the servers to the public as a web/FTP server. But if I hook a server up to the new router, users will no longer be able to access the files shared on that server (because they're on different networks). How can I go about making one server accessible to the public using the static IP line, but still able to share the files on it to the users connected to the other network? The server I want to make public is running Windows Server 2008, the other server Windows Server 2003. And as far as I know, IP addresses are assigned by the router. I'm just a developer, don't know much about networking. Thank you in advance.

  • Word 2007 won't run, tries to reinstall, fails with error 1402.

    Okay, this problem has been plaguing this computer for a while now. We tried googling, and none of the answers found helped to solve the problem. So, I am now posting the answer here for posterity. Office 2007 Home/Student edition was installed on the computer, running Vista (32-bit). One day, Word just up and stopped working. All the other programs continued to operate as expected. But every time you would click the icon for Word, it would pop up an install dialog, with a message reading "Preparing to install...". After a few minutes of the little progress bar going and going, it errors out, and gives error 1402, something to the effect of unable to access registry key HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\.wll\.... Searching around, every answer i found had to do with reassigning the permissions on this key, giving full rights to SYSTEM or to Everyone, and propagating the changes down to all sub-keys. When ever this was attempted though, it would tell us that we were unable to access the key due to permissions, even though we had run regedit as Administrator and are logged on with an administrative account. We also tried uninstalling Office and reinstalling it, as well as doing a repair install. Both these attempts also threw the same 1402 error. Also of note was that the executable for Word (winword.exe) was MIA and no longer to be found in the Office install directory.

  • Slow Windows Explorer on Windows 7

    I have Laptop with i7 (4 cores), 8GB ram and SSD OCZ Vertex 3 MaxIOPS which in testing that I did just now does 400mb/s+ read/write. However the responsiveness of Windows Explorer is far from being perfect. Opening up Computer, Documents, going into folders is very slow (1-5seconds). I don't have any viruses or spyware and I have tried changing properties to optimize view for General Items. I tried disabling Search Indexer but it made search in Outlook 2010 crawl and didn't bring any other effect. Even double clicking on file takes some time to open things up (like clicking a Word document). I don't have any drives mapped, my computer is not joined to domain. I have multiple VPN connections that I connect to but they all have disabled default gateways. I tried using CC Cleaner or some Windows 7 Tweaks app to disable some things. I am power user using Visual Studio, Tortoise SVN and other developer/administration apps. Any non obvious ideas? Edit: So I've been trying to pinpoint where the issue comes from and it seems that straight after reboot Windows Explorer opens very fast, when I load 3-4 programs (Royal TS, Visual Studio, Outlook) it's noticeably slower and the more programs I have it gets worse. After I start closing programs it starts working better and if I leave 2 open it's fast again. I tried doing some research with DiskMon and other programs from sysinternals but couldn't find anything suspicious.     I communicate with the client using various tools such as MS Outlook,Mailing through Google/ Yahoo accounts, sending Word or Excel documents as attachments through this mail. What I am looking at is there any tool which will help me in binding all these documents so that I may be able to virtually bind all these documents of a particular client. For example all these documents were sent to Client A 2 Outlook mails without attachment 2 Web mails with MS-Word attachment 1 Web Mail with Excel attachment Now I wish I had a document which would bind the Outlook mail bodies as text files MS-Word documents Excel document Previous versions of MS-Office had Office Binder.     If you have large files in a content source that is being indexed by Sharepoint you might run into the following error message: “The file reached the maximum download limit. Check that the full text of the document can be meaningfully crawled.” This is usually caused because SharePoint’s MaxDownloadSize setting is set lower than the size of the file you are attempting to index. You can increase this value, restart the service then kick off a full crawl in order to fix this issue, but SharePoint 2007 and 2010 have different methods for accomplishing this task.   Sharepoint 2007 Open up the Registry editor and increase the MaxDownloadSize value to a number (in MB) higher than the largest file being indexed. You can find this at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Search\1.0\Gathering Manager After you increase the size, cycle the search service and kick off a full crawl of the content source in question.   Sharepoint 2010 With SharePoint 2010 you can use PowerShell via the Sharepoint 2010 Console in order to change the MaxDownloadSize.     I have a report that has ~1k columns and ~17k rows and I'm trying to render it to Excel 2007 with SSRS 2008 R2 Nov CTP.     I thought these two tests should behave identically, in fact I have written the test in my project using MS Test only to find out now that it does not respect the expected message in the same way that nunit does. nunit (fails): [Test, ExpectedException(typeof(System.FormatException), ExpectedMessage = "blah")] public void Validate() { int.Parse("dfd"); } ms test (passes): [TestMethod, ExpectedException(typeof(System.FormatException), "blah")] public void Validate() { int.Parse("dfd"); } No matter what message I give the ms test, it will pass. Is there any way to get the ms test to fail if the message is not right? Can I even create my own exception attribute? I would rather not have to write a try catch block for every test where this occurs.

  • Converting MS Word Documents to PDF in ASP.NET

    Similar questions have been asked, but nothing exactly like mine, so here goes. We have a collection of Microsoft Word documents on an ASP.NET web server with merge fields whose values are filled in as a result of user form submissions. After the field merge, the server must convert the document to PDF and stream it down to the browser. Our first inclination was to use the Visual Studio Tools for Office API; however, we ran into this warning from Microsoft: Microsoft does not currently recommend, and does not support, Automation of Microsoft Office applications from any unattended, non-interactive client application or component (including ASP, ASP.NET, DCOM, and NT Services), because Office may exhibit unstable behavior and/or deadlock when Office is run in this environment. It looks like the field manipulation can be done using the Open XML SDK, but what's the best way to convert Word 2007 documents to PDF without opening Word? The optimal solution would be low-cost, scalable, have a low memory footprint, be easy to deploy, and have a .NET API.

  • Visual C++ function suddenly 170 ms slower (4x longer)

    For the past few months I've been working on a Visual C++ project to take images from cameras and process them. Up until today this has taken about 65 ms to update the data but now it has suddenly increased significantly. What happens is: I launch my program and for the first 30 or so iterations it performs as expected, then suddenly the loop time increases from 65 ms to 250 ms. The odd thing is, after timing each function I found out that the part of the code which is causing the slowdown is fairly basic and has not been modified in over a month. The data which goes into it is unchanged and identical every iteration but the execution time which is initially less than 1 ms suddenly increases to 170 ms while the rest of the code is still performing as expected (time-wise). Basically, I am calling the same function over and over, for the first 30 calls it performs as it should, after that it slows down for no apparent reason. It might also be worth noting that it is a sudden change in execution time, not a gradual increase. What could be causing this? The code is leaking some memory (~50 kb/s) but not nearly enough to warrant a sudden 4x slowdown. If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them!

  • Windows periodically disconnects, reconnects to the network

    My setup: I have a PC with a Gigabyte GA-MA78S2H motherboard (Realtek Gigabit wired Ethernet on-board). I have the latest drivers (at least the latest driver for the NIC. I'm connecting via an Edimax BR-6216Mg (again, wired connection). For some reason I experience short periodic disconnects and reconnects. Specifically, Skype disconnects, tries to connect, succeeds after a short while; incoming SFTP sessions get dropped; using a browser, I sometime get stuck in the DNS lookup or connection to the website and a page won't load. A couple of seconds later, a reload works. All this happens with Windows XP SP3. With Windows 7, it also happens. Things I've done/tried: [2012-03-26] I replaced the cable; I thought that made a difference, but the disconnects were back a while later, so that wasn't it. Updated the NIC driver. Tried reducing the MTU (used a utility called Dr. TCP); there was no effect. I updated my board BIOS revision (which caused all the HW to be "reinstalled" or re-identified - successfully). I installed another NIC, and tried switching to it - same effect with the on-board NIC. A while back I tried another router (although it was an Edimax model) - same problem. Connected the computer directly, with no router. Same problem. ping -t to the router (192.168.0.254) gives pongs, nothing is lost, and time is < 1 ms almost always (sometimes it says 1 or 2 ms). This is the case also during the disconnects.

Here I am, the next morning, and Visual Studio 2008 is freezing, like there "was some invisible dialog window", because it doesn't allow me to click on any IDE element. In brief, after I open a ASP.MVC form, suddenly I'm not allowed to click on anything, icon, dock panel, toolbox, nothing... Anyone has this kind of problem?

Our main candidates are MDaemon 11 and Exchange 2007 or 2010. We would like to learn other users experiences on those solutions. The server-side experiences, the user-side experiences, feature set, TCO, support options etc. And if there were other solutions (like MDaemon 11 + Exchange or anything else) what would you suggest ?

  • Transfer DNS zones from master to slave (MS DNS to BIND9)

    Hello, I have a problem with DNS servers. My master dns server runs on Microsoft DNS server and now I want to start slave DNS server on Linux Bind9. The problems is that master MS DNS server can't validate slave DNS server (bind9) and can't resolve FQDN. Maybe, I missed something... firewall, dns configuration and network looks like ok.     I have 31 documents I need to merge into one, using Word 2007 on Windows 7. I read that you can go to Insert - Object - Text from file and select the documents you need. I did that and it worked fine. The thing is, each document is right against the last one. Is there any way to make it so each document starts on a new page, other than manually inserting page breaks?     We have a website on a secondary server that we want this website to be accessible from Internet, with www.mywebsite.com. In the domain name provider of www.mywebsite.com, we set our 2 dns names, dns1.company.ch, dns2.company.ch and our static ip address. System is set as following: MS Server 2008 R2 N°1: Main server, in AD With IP 192.168.1.100 With DNS zone dns1.company.ch With DNS secondary zone from server N°2: dns2.company.ch With DNS secondary zone from server N°2: mywebsite.com (zone transfer is on) MS Server 2008 R2 N°2: Secondary server, not in AD With IP 192.168.1.101 With DNS zone dns2.company.ch With DNS zone mywebsite.com with host: 192.168.1.101 With the website under ISS with bindings www.mywebsite.com:80, mywebsite.com:80 All traffics for ports 80 (http) and 53 (dns) from Internet goes to server N°1. How can we redirect all traffics for www.mywebsite.com from Internet to our secondary server so the corresponding website can be displayed in Internet ?   • Best way to keep a MS DOS application alive? (Virtual MS DOS)

    Hi, I have a good old DOS application which is still required to run. Unfortunately the PC is dying and needs to be replaced. The PC was running Windows 98 and the software was executed in a MS Dos Command line. When we would order a new PC you would at least get a Windows XP which has the Win 2000 (NT) Kernel and is not DOS based. Now I need a strategy to be able to run a that DOS application on a new age PC. What I was thinking is to buy a standard office box and have a virtual PC or VMware setup which is running MS DOS and my DOS application? Would this be a way to go? Any concerns? What about 16Bit/32Bit… So any opinion, experiances or tip would be great …. Thanks

  • Running Excel 2007 as admin on Win7 causes “There was a problem sending the command to the program”

    I am running Excel 2007 on Windows 7 64bit. I need to run Excel as administrator so I have the "Run as Administrator" box in the Excel shortcut checked. Now, when I try to open an Excel file by double clicking, I get the following error: There was a problem sending the command to the program Excel opens fine after that, and I can open the file fine through Excel's File/Open menu. Why can't I open the file by double clicking? Some sites suggest changing a specific Excel option. I tried while checking/unchecking Excel's "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)" but that didn't help. The issue goes away if I uncheck "Run as Administrator" but I want to be able to leave that checked. Any ideas?

  • Cannot connect Office 365 email with Outlook 2010

    I have an email address of the form [email protected] that I am accessing through this site. I had connected my email to Outlook 2010 and it was working fine. Recently, it started requesting credentials every time I logged in, without connecting to the email server even after entering the correct password. I had already decided to reinstall Windows 7, so I thought that would also fix this problem. Unfortunately it did not. I tried the troubleshoot function embedded in the Office 365 capabilities, but it did not find anything wrong. I suspect that one possible source of this problem could be the fact that in the control panel it states Mail (32-bit) while Windows is 64-bit (office is 32 as well). In addition when trying to remove an email account from the list it remains there unaffected. Does anybody know what should I do in order to fix this problem?

    In June Mikhail asked the same question but the answer was how to do the opposite (make multiple instances the default). I am trying to get to an answer to Mikhail's question which I rephrase as :- I have same problem with 64 byte Windows 7 and Excel 2007. Excel always used to open in a single instance n o matter how/where I opened the sheets. Because of this I could always copy and paste, etc with full formatting, formulas, etc. Suddenly, Excel switched to opening everything in fresh, separate, multiple instances and destroyed the basic cut and paste options. Wasn't the original question how to go back to everything in a single instance ? I have been searching for the answer to that question (rather than the opposite) Richard
