• Foreign Key vs. Independent Relationships - is there improvement with Entity Framework 5?

  I have read several articles and questions on concept of foreign key vs independent relationship when using Entity Framework. And I am still not 100% sure which way to go.... I would prefer not to "pollute" my domain POCOs by having a property that will be used in FK relationship when I already have a property reference to "has a" object. My questions are (looking at you @EFTeam, @Ladislav Mrnka) are there any improvements on this subject in the upcoming Entity Framework v5? are there more advantages if I use FK instead of independent associations (particularly with code first)?

• C# Dynamic Query Without A Database Model

  I have been searching the web for a solution to dynamic queries. I have found many different solutions (e.g. Linq to Sql, Dynamic Linq Expressions, Dynamic Query), but all of these solutions involve some sort of previous knowledge of the database (like a model in code). Maybe what I am asking is way off the deep end, but is there any possible way to dynamically query a database without a model? For example, a database has a Customers table with the following columns: CustomerID Name FavoriteColor I want to create a query as SELECT Name FROM Customers WHERE @0 = @1, where the two placeholders are populated dynamically. The resulting data does not tie to a model class and I would prefer to use some sort of framework to build the queries, not simple string concatenation. The System.Linq.Dynamic namespace came really close to fulfilling this request, but it uses a database model. I realize this is crazy, but I was just curious.

• Compile C++ from VS08/10 without Run Time Library / MFC

  Are there settings I can adjust in Visual Studio so that it does not compile with any run time library or MFC. I started learning C++ to get away from C#'s .Net, and this is just as bad. When I execute the program in a Windows XP virtual machine I get an error. I can compile without the dependencies in Code::Blocks, but I'm more familiar with VS, and prefer many of it's features over those of Code::Blocks. If you know of to get past this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  I have a table DEAL and a table DEAL_TYPE. I would like to map this code: public class Deal { DealType type; } public enum DealType { BASE("Base"), EXTRA("Extra"); } The problem is that the data already exist in the database. And I'm having a hard time mapping the classes to the database. The database looks something like that: TABLE DEAL { Long id; Long typeId; } TABLE DEAL_TYPE { Long id; String text; } I know I could use a simple @OneToMany relationship from deal to deal type, but I would prefer to use an enum. Is this possible? I almost got it working by using a EnumType.ORDINAL type. But unfortunately, my IDs in my deal type table are not sequential, and do not start at 1. Any suggestions?

  Hi all! WPF is great because there are many things to achieve own goals. By example, for what I understand, adorners can add some controls to a UI element, but I think that the same behavior can be achieved through a custom control that contains the additional element. So, my question is: when should I prefer adorners to a more complex (but I think, more flexible) custom control? Please consider that I'm extensively using MVVM pattern and I would like to bind commands to the additional element. Particularly, I'm designing a diagram designer application and I would like to add connection points to my shapes. Thank you

• Flash Video Gallery using Jquery

  Hi, my question referenced to my friend. I am trying to use jquery to show flash videos(swf) like a showcase and this is what I am trying to do: Show a video by default and then have "" below that so when an user click on prev or next, it will show the next one and so on. When a video is clicked after making the selection it can either open the video on top of it in a bigger size Or play the video once right there once they click the play button. I have seen examples for images and I tried those but it did not work with flash files. Please let me know if anyone can guide me. I prefer using jquery as there are applications on the site that uses jquery. Also, I just remembered one thing, how to stop the video if they navigate to the next one. This makes me think if its a good idea to do the gallery or showcase for flash videos. Please clarify my questions. thanks

  I notice that some programs (e.g. sqlite, mysql client) provide a command-line prompt that is very similar in capabilities to the bash's, including: line editing with left and right arrows, delete, insert, ^K, etc. history browsing with up and down arrows ^R for reverse i-search in command history which make me think that they are using the same toolset for this. I'd like to create a prompt with similar capabilities in my program, which tools can I use? I prefer it to have the same functionality as in bash, so that the users would be familiar with it.

  There are examples online with web select boxes that have a huge list of countries and that probably will be good enough for me to use. However, by Murphy's law, there's bound to be some random country that someone is from and isn't on my list (and probably someone else also ran into this and has updated their local list). Also, when new countries are added, I won't know about it. Basically, I feel it's better practice and a better smell if there is some centralized list of country names that I can use / trust. (also it could set/follow standards for exact namings "United St..." vs "USA" etc.) I would prefer a solution that isn't IIS specific if possible

• Padding List Items?

  I have a list where i basically need a hierarchy of items. Any children of an item would be padded slightly, as to easily distinguish their parent item. How could this be achieved? Note that i could, if needed, make each parent show no children, and then when the parent is clicked, a new list containing all of it's children is loaded. This however requires more clicking to display information than i would prefer. Also, the items themselves will contain graphics and whatnot (to show a drag'n'drop button, etc), so it would be best if it visually appeared as if the item itself had a margin, rather than the contents of the item being padded.   I'm trying to retrieve the ip address of the local machine in my program. The OS running is Ubuntu 8.10. I tried using gethostname() and gethostbyname to do it. All I can get is 127.0.1.1. I learned that it seems to be a Debian thing: This thread explained it. The content of my /etc/hosts file is also: 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 mymachine In this case, is there any other way to programactically (prefer C or C++) to get the ip address without modifying the system file on the machine?   let's rope I can make this non-sujective Here's the thing: Sometimes, on fixed-typed languages, I restrict input on methods and functions to positive numbers by using the unsigned types, like unsigned int or unsigned double, etc. Most libraries, however, doesn't seem to think that way. Take C# string.Length. It's a integer, even though it can never be negative. Same goes for C/C++: sqrt input is an int or a double. I know there are reasons for this ... for example your argument might be read from a file and (no idea why) you may prefer to send the value directly to the function and check for errors latter (or use a try-catch block). So, I'm assuming that libraries are way better designed than my own code. So what are the reasons against using unsigned numbers to represent positive numbers? It's because of overflow when we cast then back to signed types?

  I have a long running task as part of my application. The task can be started, paused, resumed, and cancelled. I'm trying to find the best interface for these operations. Two seem clear: Pause and Cancel. This leaves the start and resume operations. I could include both Start and Resume. This has the downside of either requiring the API consumer to check the state before starting/resuming the operation to call the right method, or making the methods aliases of each other. I'm thinking I should include either Start or Resume, but I don't know which one is the most appropriate. Does anyone have any examples in the .NET Framework of such behavior? I prefer to follow established patterns whenever they are available.

  A scroll follow effect is when a part of the web design is always visible, even when the window is scrolled. There are animated and static versions of this. The animated is ok http://robertomartinez.info/cobra/index.html But I prefer the fixed version, however I have some bugs: http://robertomartinez.info/cobra/index_fixed.html -In Firefox, when you scroll the page, you will see a kind of vertical cut in the lorem ipsum text (below the HERE indication). This is caused by the image tiles of the map, then if you drag and drop the map, the cut will appear in another side. -In Safari, when you scroll the page, the div follows, but the map images stay in the same position. • How do i view the local database version in safari on the iphone?

  I am trying to see the localDatabase version from my iPhone in safari but it is not displaying, according to the docs i am supposed to be able to do this: var db = openDatabase('dbShortName', '', 'dbLongName', 1000); alert(db.version); and it should alert the current version number. It does not. It works in Chrome and safari for the desktop but not the iPhone. Does anybody have some idea why? My next option is to store the version in a separate table, but I would prefer to use the built in system. Thanks in advance.

  I have a Python-driven web interface powered by Apache 2.2 with mod_python and Python 2.4. I need to make an asynchronous process appear synchronous to users of this web interface. When users access one module on this website: An external SOAP interface will be contacted with a unique identifier and will respond with a number N The external interface will respond asynchronously by contacting a SOAP server on my machine between 1 and 10 times (the number N tells us how many responses we will receive) I need to somehow aggregate these responses and pass them to the original module which will display the information back to the user. The goal is to make the process appear synchronous to the user. What is the best way to handle this synchronization issue? Is this something Twisted would be well-suited for? I am not restricting myself to Python for the solution, though it is preferred because everything else on the server is in Python. I prefer a solution that is both scalable and will take a minimal amount of programming time (though I understand that these attributes are somewhat at odds).

  "Refer to objects by their interfaces" is a good practise, as mentioned in Effective Java. So for example i prefer List<String> al = new ArrayList<String>(); over ArrayList<String> al = new ArrayList<String>(); in my code. One annoying thing is that if i type ArrayList<String> al = new and then hit Ctrl+Space in Eclipse i get ArrayList<String>() as propostal. But if i type List al = new and then hit Ctrl+Space i will get only propostal to define anonymous inner class, but not propostals such as new ArrayList<String>(), what is 99% the case, or for example new Vector<String>(). Is there any way to get the subclasses as propostals for generic types?

Given this code: #!/usr/bin/python def test_function(): try: a = str(5) raise b = str(6) except: print b test_function() what is the best way to avoid the inevitable "UnboundLocalError: local variable 'b' referenced before assignment" that I'm going to get in the exception handler? Does python have an elegant way to handle this? If not, what about an inelegant way? In a complicated function I'd prefer to avoid testing the existence of every local variable before I, for example, printed debug information about them.

  I'm writing an NSIS installer and the setup program elevates "as administrator" as needed on Windows 7 / vista. I need to run the installed program at the end of the install and don't want to launch it with the same privileges as the installer. The regular NSIS exec commands run the child process with the same permissions as the installer. There is a UAC plugin for NSIS, but the documentation on it isn't great and it seems v. new; I'd prefer not to use that plugin. Ideally, I'm looking for a small .exe I can include that'll launch the target program without UAC elevation. Does this exist? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

These methods interact with a fragile data connection, so we often use a helper class to perform retries/reconnects, etc. Like so: MyHelper.PerformCall( () => { doStuffWithData(parameters...) }); And this works fine, but it can make the code a little cluttery. What I would prefer to do is decorate the methods that interact with the data connection like so: [InteractsWithData] protected string doStuffWithData(parameters...) { // do stuff... } And then essentially, whenever doStuffWithData is called, the body of that method would be passed in as an Action to MyHelper.PerformCall(). How do I do this?

  I have a user table 'users' that has fields like: id first_name last_name ... and have another table that determines relationships: user_id friend_id user_accepted friend_accepted .... I would like to generate a query that selects all the users but also add another field/column say 'network_status' that depends on the values of user_accepted and fiend_accepted. For example, if user_accepted is true friend_accepted is false I want the 'network_status' field to say 'request sent'. Can I possibly do this in one query?   I am developing an Android application and require some basic datetime manipulation. I have a Date object (from Java.util.Date) holding a specific date. I need to add a specific time to it. The time I have is a string in this format: "9:00 PM EST" How would I "add" this time to the previous date? If the Date object currently has: "4/24/10 00:00:00" How would I change it to instead be: "4/24/10 09:00:00 EST" I would prefer to do this without the use of an external library, if possible.
