• Dynamic Components

  I am attempting to design a component-based architecture that allows Components to be dynamically enabled and disabled, much like the system employed by Unity3D. For example, all Components are implicitly enabled by default; however, if one desires to halt execution of code for a particular Component, one can disable it. Naively, I want to have a boolean flag in Component (which is an abstract class), and somehow serialize all method calls into strings, so that some sort of ComponentManager can check if a given Component is enabled/disabled before processing a method call on it. However, this is a pretty bad solution. I feel like I should employ some variation of the state paradigm, but I have yet to make progress. Any help would be greatly appreciated,

• Are there any actual examples of profitable programmer's "worker's cooperatives"?

  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worker_cooperative I'm curious whether there are, anywhere in the world, worker's cooperatives that center on a technology business that involves either programming, IT, or some sort of IT or programming related consulting or services. The wikipedia link above is an overview of the concept. The short form explanation is that a co-op is a worker-owned business. Also there is the notion that every worker owns shares in the business. I am interested in knowing whether an example of a "programmer's/IT co-op" even exists. Note: I am not talking about nor asking about a government-funded incubator nor any other socialized, state supported group. I also don't mean "co-working", which is renting an office with other self employed people doing their own thing. I mean a going, profitable IT business operating in a competitive environment that is worker-owned and run.

• One subdomain is not working

  Hello there, My main domain works just fine - www.example.com and a subdomain set up by another developer works as well - sub1.example.com. But when I try to set another subdomain up I go through the process everything seems to work. The software creates the default files where the subdomain files should go. But when I try to browse there it doesn't work. My host uses Plesk to do all of the hosting stuff. What do you think the problem is? I doubt it is some sort of cache issue because I had problems on my phone which I tried after problems on the pc. Maybe for some reason Plesk needs time to set this up? I have used Cpanel before and that works instantly.

• How to estimate what kind of server resources you will require at launch?

  How can I go about/what is the best way of estimating what kind of server resources I will require at the launch of a new project. Let's say for instance I'd gathered 10k users email addresses that opted-in to be informed when we launch. I didn't really want to go for a cloud solution at the moment. Should I just get a reasonably-specced dedicated server and go from there, or should I be looking at services like Amazon EC2? Or should I start out with EC2 for the fully-flexible resources, then once things stabilize I'll be able to sort a fixed hosting deal that is adequate elsewhere? Sub-question: What's a good way of estimating what load a particular application will place on the server per user?

• What to do about unreadable grub screen

  I have been upgrading my Ubuntu, from 10.04 to 12.04 to 12.10 to 13.04 in the past few days with varying degrees of success. One problem that has been constant through every step of the upgrade, since 12.04 is that a portion of the text on the grub screen is off the screen to the left so I can't completely make out what the options are. As I am having other troubles with the upgrade I would like to at least be able to see what options there are to me at boot time. Is there some sort of grub configuration that can handle this?

  I have Visual Studio 2010 setup to remove and sort settings on save with the Power Commands extensions. This is great, but sometimes it removes the using System.Linq at the top. I also find myself scrolling to the top to add the using when I first add System.Linq. • Trying to retrace our SEO domain redirect strategy

  An SEO built a copy of my company's e-commerce site on another domain that contained our product's keywords in the name (i.e. as if Levi's built a duplicate site on bluejeans.com)...and then they referenced a lot of the images on the actual website from the other domain (as if Levis.com had images on it referenced like: img src="http://www.bluejeans.com/jeans-front.jpg"), but when you tried to reach the site by typing the name into the browser you would be redirected to the regular website, so the site wasn't really used for any purpose except I guess SEO. Since I didn't think this was doing anything GOOD for us at the time, I deleted the duplicate site and let the hosting on it expire, only to watch our search engine position rankings fall dramatically. Any ideas as to what was going on there? I want to get it back to understand its impact, but I don't know how it was set up. I contacted our host and they have no idea how it was set up. I suspect there was some sort of redirect in play, or something?

• Can't boot to Ubuntu 11.10 after installation with Windows 7

  I just installed Ubuntu 11.10 on a machine with Windows 7 already installed. I want to setup the dualboot environment. I have a block of unallocated disk space at the end of the disk (some blog post suggested to do so). Then I started installing Ubuntu 11.10 on that part of disk. I installed the boot loader to /boot partition and the installation finished successfully. However, after installation, Ubuntu 11.10 doesn't show up on boot menu. Then I searched on Internet and I used EasyBCD to add a grub2 boot to boot menu. After this, the boot entry does show up in the boot menu, however it only boot into some sort of grub console. I tried many times, and it doesn't work. It looks like the boot loader is not properly installed? I only have one 1.5TB disk and the first 800GB is NTFS partition with Windows 7. Does this work?

• PHP - Data Access Layer

  I am currently reviewing a code base and noticed that a majority of the calls (along with DB connections) are just buried inside the PHP scripts. I would have assumed that like other languages they would have developed some sort of data access layer (Like I would do in .Net or Java) for all of the communication to the DB (or implemented MVC, etc). Is this still a common pattern in PHP or is there alternative methodologies/patterns for this technology? I am just trying to understand why the subs would have developed it this way. Any insight/info on how experienced developers design an approach data access in PHP would be very much appreciated.

• No Sound via HDMI

  I have ubuntu installed on a Acer aspire revo 3700 intel atom processor with nvidia ion graphics this is plugged into a celcus 32 inch TV via HDMI (1080p). The video driver shows as an nvidia which I can select. I have set the sound to play via HDMI and the output to HDMI but get no sound. I have tried a sony 1080i TV with the box but get eratic results with the graphics, but the sound picks up straight away that is there is no need to select it. The graphics on the celcus TV work but I get a dialog box showing loads of different resolutions and frequencies which I have to close manually, these appear to be attempts to set different resolutions for the TV. Am I missing some sort of screen/sound driver, if so does anyone know what might support the celcus 32 inch (1080p) tv?

  Many years ago I may have bought a few sitewide links for some of my sites, these have now come back to haunt me and I need to sort them out. I've tried to contact the owners but they're too lazy to bother changing the sites so I figure it's time to disavow the links. But is there a way to disavow all of the sitewide links on the domain apart from on the index page and would this be a benefit to leave the index or would it still be seen as spammy? • Looking to create a website ... need assistance on what technologies to use!

  First off, My group and I don't have any experience with databases or anything of that sort, only programming (not web-programming), so this post is just me wondering what things I should start researching and possibly some referral to a hosting company. The abstract idea is to have a list of things, each categorized, and each item with user-submitted reviews (made by users who are signed up with the website). Would absolutely everything be stored on a SQL database? (the long text reviews for example) Does anyone have any suggestions on some 'web frameworks' we could use to jumpstart us? What should our absolute first step be? (I was thinking about first designing the basic database? so we have something to work around...?)   I've found plenty of questions between here and StackExchange of people asking for the 'best' data grid / data table, or one that has a particular feature, and plenty of lists out there (of various ages) listing the various data grid implementations ... but is anyone aware of any matrix of what features the various solutions implement? (eg, allow shift-click to select multiple; support checkboxes for selection; can update a regular table in-place; allow editing of cells; support websql or indexeddb for local caching; which browsers they support; infinite scroll; etc.) There's a generic 'javascript framework' comparison on wikipedia, which would be the sort of thing I'm looking for, but it doesn't go into detail on data grids. (which makes sense, as so many are extensions, not core features of those frameworks, and in the case of jQuery, there's lots of 'em.)

  So I'm trying to create a bash script that looks for two words in my syslog file. Then I want the script to print out how many times those two words have appeared. Also I want it to print it out for every hour of the day. So like if the word dog appeared 4 times during the first hour of today, it says Hour one, dog 4. Finally at the end of the script I want it to print out how many times those words appeared all day. • What program to use to create subtitles for a video?

  I have a video that I want to create subtitles for. Is there a program that can perform rudimentary speech-to-text in order to set the correct start/stop of each individual subtitle create rudimentary text subtitles (using some sort of speech-to-text) I know about gnome-subtitles. However, it requires extensive effort to create those subtitles manually. You need to select yourself the start and stop for each sentence. Youtube has the above features (creates rudimentary text subtitles at the correct timings, using speech-to-text). However I would rather not upload the videos to Youtube just to get my subtitles. Is it possible to do the subtitles efficiently in Ubuntu? Update: I plan to use the .srt subtitles only, and do not need to hard code them on the videos. My biggest requirement is to have the program automatically find the start/stop for each sentence, so that I write the text in it.

• Protecting the integrity of a game state while minimizing amount of data sent

  I'm developing a game in PHP/jQuery, and naturally have to be wary of any sort of data coming from the client. At present, I have tables of data representing the map (2D roguelike), monsters, items, and player(s). Initially, my thought was to simply package it all in a JSON object and send it every game tick, however when actually looking at the data I realized that's quite a large packet to be sending. So, my question is what is a good approach for minimizing data sent to the client? Obviously I would need to figure out some way of validating whatever it sends back. Initially we'd hoped to do some minimal verification on the client-side, but each time we thought of one thing we could do it is immediately invalidated with tools like Firebug. Kind of an open question I realize, but we want to get this right before we move on with our implementation so we don't have to shoehorn in bugfixes later on.

• Can I use Unity with XMonad?

  I've been using Fedora for a while, but I recently decided to upgrade my ubuntu installation from 12.04 to 12.10. While I was using Fedora, I found xmonad tiling window manager which I sort of got working with xfce. I really like xmonad and I now automatically use the keyboard shortcuts without even thinking. So I would like to use xmonad with unity. Now, I have seen several blog posts etc. that explain how to setup the whole thing in 12.04, with Unity2D. But now, Unity2D has been removed, and the old methods no longer apply. I have read that Unity is actually just a Compiz plugin, and that the wm can't be replaced. Does no version of Unity have a replaceable WM? I've also tried MATE (GNOME2 fork) with xmonad on 12.10 and that is totally broken for me, but that's for another question.
