• How to check for duplicate files?

  I have an external hard drive on which I have backed up files several times. Some files were modified between backups, others were not. Some may have been renamed. Now I'm running out of space, and I'd like to clean up duplicate files. My idea was to md5sum every file on the drive, then look for duplicates, and diff the relevant files (just in case, haha). Is this the best way to do this? What are some other methods of checking for duplicate files?

  I'd like to be able to identify whether a given DOM node has been appended/inserted into another node yet, or whether it is fresh out of document.createElement() or similar and has not been placed anywhere. In most browsers just checking the parentNode works. if (!node.parentNode) { // this node is not part of a larger document } However, in Internet Explorer it appears that new elements, even right after they've been created with document.createElement() already have a parentNode object (of type DispHTMLDocument??). Any other nice cross-browser and reliable way? Edit: looks like Internet Explorer is implicitly creating a DocumentFragment (with nodeType of 11) and setting that as the node's parentNode property.

• Downloading Eclipse's Source Code

  I'm doing a study on large Java projects and would like to view the source code for Eclipse. I have gone to this url (http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/CVS_Howto) and figured that the most useful cvs repository for me to look at would be this one: :pserver:[email protected]:/cvsroot/eclipse (The Eclipse platform project) However, when looking at this repository, it has so many modules! Which modules should I be trying to check out? I don't necessarily want to build the IDE from source, however, I just want to get the core Eclipse code base to perform some analysis. Would I just check out any modules starting with "org.eclipse..."? Should I be checking out any of the others? Or is there an easier way to get the source? I read somewhere that you can get the source from the binary version of Eclipse but I am unsure where to find the source.

• Filesystem synchronization library?

  Hi, I've got 10 GB of files to back up daily to another site. The client is way out in the country so bandwidth is an issue. Does anyone know of any existing software or libraries out there that help with keeping a folder with its files synchronized across a slow link, that is it only sends files across if they have changed? Some kind of hash checking would be nice, too, to at least confirm the two sides are the same. I don't mind paying some money for it, seeing as how it might take me several weeks to a month to implement something decent on my own. I just don't want to re-invent the wheel, here. BTW it is a windows shop (they have an in house windows IT guy) so windows is preferred. I also have 10 GB of SQL Server 2000 databases to go across. Is the SQL server replication mode reliable? So there are times when I want the command window to not show up and times when I want it to stay open so that the user can see what happened, possibly respond with the appropriate input. • Is calling Process.Refresh() required for Process.HasFinished

  Hello I am interested if calling Process.Refresh() is mandatory when waiting for the process to terminate by checking Process.HasFinished property? I have a piece of code that works fine without the Process.Refresh() call, however I am curious weather this is a coincidence? I can see that a msdn example has the Process.Refresh() call... If its not necessary, and Process.HasExited is the only property I need, are there any advantages to making the call to Process.Refresh() ? If not, is there a reason it is in the msdn example? • Efficient JSON encoding for data that may be binary, but is often text

  I need to send a JSON packet across the wire with the contents of an arbitrary file. This may be a binary file (like a ZIP file), but most often it will be plain ASCII text. I'm currently using base64 encoding, which handles all files, but it increases the size of the data significantly - even if the file is ASCII to begin with. Is there a more efficient way I can encode the data, other than manually checking for any non-ASCII characters and then deciding whether or not to base64-encode it? I'm currently writing this in Python, but will probably need to do the same in Java, C# and C++, so an easily portable solution would be preferable.

  i am trying to build a virtual comunity, and i have a profile page, and a personal page. In the profile page, one can see only the posts of one user(the user whos profile is checked), in the personal page one can see his posts, plus all the posts he has subscribed to (just like in Facebook) it's a little confusing for me how i can link to the profile of one user, i mean when anybody clicks on a username, it should link to his personal profile page. for example, if someone searches name "abc", the rsult would be "abc",and link to his profile. How can i pass to one function the username or id of a linked user? i mean, showing the profile of the logged in user who is checking his profile is quite easy.But how about another user profile, if one wants to access it? thanks a lot!

  Is there an efficient way of detecting if a jpeg file is corrupted? Background info:   solutions needs to work from within a php script   the jpeg files are on disk   manual checking is no option (user uploaded data) I know that imagecreatefromjpeg(string $filename); can do it. But it is quite slow at doing so. Does anybody know a faster/more efficient solutions?

• C# - Removing items from lists and all references to them.

  Hi there, I'm facing a situation where I have dependent objects and I would like to be able to remove an object and all references to it. Say I have an object structure like the code below, with a Branch type which references two Nodes. public class Node { // Has Some Data! } public class Branch { // Contains references to Nodes public Node NodeA public Node NodeB } public class Graph { public List<Node> Nodes; public List<Branch> Branches; } If I remove a Node from the Nodes list in the Graph class, it is still possible that one or more Branch objects still contains a reference to the removed Node, thus retaining it in memory, whereas really what I would quite like would be to set any references to the removed Node to null and let the garbage collection kick in. Other than enumerating through each Branch and checking each Node reference sequentially, are there any smart ideas on how I remove references to the Node in each Branch instance AND indeed any other class which reference the removed Node? • WPF Skin Skinning Security Concerns

  I'm really new to the WPF in the .Net Framework (get that out of the way). I'm writing an application where the interface is very customizable by simply loading .xaml (at the moment a Page element) files into a frame and then mapping the controls via names as needed. The idea is to have a community of people who are interested in making skins, skin my application however they want (much like Winamp). Now the question arises, due to my lack of Xaml knowledge, is it possible to create malicious Xaml pages that when downloaded and used could have other embedded Iframes or other elements that could have embed html or call remote webpages with malicious content? I believe this could be the case. If this is the case then I two options; either I have an automated process that can remove these types of Xaml files by checking it’s elements prior to allowing download (which I would assume would be most difficult) or have a human review them prior to download. Are there alternatives I’m unaware of that could make this whole process a lot easier?

  I am trying to get the updated Windows Phone 7 tools installed, but can't get rid of the old ones. The uninstaller wouldn't run, so I had to try more extreme means. I got everything removed except for "Microsoft Windows Phone Emulator x64". Does anyone know what vm_web.exe (the tool installer) is checking for (registry, file, etc.) that prevents the installer from running. I tried Aaron Stebner's clean up tool, and it helped a lot, but couldn't get rid of the emulator.

• spamassassin setup how to make sure X-Spam-Status is allways written.

  Hi, I just found out that spamassassin skips checking for email bigger than 250KB by default. Due to a coding bug, I check for the X-Spam-Status header in incoming emails and did not take into account the fact that it might be null. I know that I can increase the size of the limit by configuration but it may cause a load issue on my server. Since I do not want to redeploy my application at this time I was wondering if there is a way to make sure this header exists automatically in every email, either by spamassassin configuration or by postfix or something else. • Launching my deployed my app gets "has stopped working" error. How do I debug this?

  I deployed a VB.Net app and ran it and I get 'AppName has stopped working" "Windows is checking for a solution to the problem" along with a Cancel button under Windows 7. Under XP I am only getting the option to Send the error report to Microsoft or not. There is no apparent way to hook into a debugger. I am not getting any exception data. I have put msgboxes at the very start of my code and they are not hit so it is failing before any of my code is even executing. I have checked all dependencies that I can think of. I developed the app on VS2008 Windows 7 and deploying to Windows 7 and WinXP. I need some advice - how do I debug this? Thanks, Brad

• Mobile Safari Geolocation API Issues

  Hi, since Mobile Safari's Geolocation API should be an implementation of the W3C Geolocation API I found some bugs. I was wondering if anybody noticed the same. As specified in the W3C Geolocation API the PositionCallback returns a Position object, which contains a Coordinates object. In this object all attributes are of type double. Using navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition and checking the Position object in the successCallback the accuracy attribute is always an object, but should be a double. The heading attribute is always -1 when testing in the iPhone simulator, but should be null or between 0 and 360. 2. Setting the options parameter for navigator.geolocation.watchPosition or navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition as specified in the W3C Geolocation API has no effect. No matter what is set as the timeout value, the win callback is called every 10 seconds. For example setting the timeout=1000 should immediately call either the successCallback or errorCallback.   I have a site in development here: http://bit.ly/diWSgT Scenario: My custom script looks at the viewport size and if the menu and logo are not in view, animates them up into view (just re-size your browser window to test if you like). That works fine. I also have the every wonderful jQuery cycle plugin in use via WP-Cycle for Wordpress. The problem: As you can see by checking out the site, using my slide up/down button buggers with the cycle function, particularly when you click the button while on the second image. Any thoughts as to why this is happening would be great. Thanks.

  I'm trying to be a Good Developer and separate my concerns out. I've got an ASP.NET MVC project with all my web code, and a DAL project with all the model code. Sometimes code in the DAL needs to check if the current user is authorized to perform some actions, by checking something like CurrentUser.IsAdmin. For the web site, the current is derived from the Windows username (from HttpContext.Current.User.Identity), but this is clearly a web concern and shouldn't be coupled to the DAL. What's the best pattern to loosely couple the authentication? Should the DAL be asking the MVC code for a username, or the MVC be telling the DAL? Are there advantages or disadvantages to one or the other? Thank you!

• Android - Notification bar height from a service

  Hi, The application I'm working on is a service which runs in the background in android. The problem is that I need to determine the height of the notification bar for some functionality of the service. I found a number of solutions for this, for regular activities - a view inside an activity can determine its own height without the notification bar, based on checking its actual view size from its onSizeChanged event, after it is already drawn. However, this is not applicable to a service which has no physical view drawn. I would really appreciate any ideas on getting the size of the notification bar at a system level, perhaps? I'm trying to design my data access to allow various facets - from ASP.net, WCF and Windows Forms / Windows services. I'm a bit confused re: session management etc.. How would I handle this? I've been checking out code such as: http://membranecms.googlecode.com/svn/ and questions such as: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1207833/nhibernate-linq-session-management But what do i do if i don't just do things in a web based environment..? Do i need to create different repositories for each client? Or do i pass in the ISession into the (for example) UserRepository constructor..? ... as a side note I'm using nHibernate.Linq Also using fluent nHibernate to config my mapping

• How to prevent application thievery (specific to Android applications)?

  Hey, I was wondering what the most effective way of preventing people from stealing my application (downloading a copy of the .apk online rather than buying it). I've spent a lot of time on one in particular (Droidbox) and won't be releasing Sync until I can guarantee that the people who are providing illegal copies of the pro version aren't able to. Anyone implemented this? I've tried checking my package signature verses an the signature of an unsigned copy but it appears to be the same - perhaps I'm doing something incorrectly here. I'm unsure whether people actually distribute the signed .apk in which case I don't think signature validation would work to begin with... Please note, this question is specific to Android Marketplace Applications - the difference being, application delivery is out of my hands and I have no way of linking between a legitimate purchase and an illegal download.

• VARCHAR does not work as expected in Apache Derby

  I'm having this same problem: How can I truncate a VARCHAR to the table field length AUTOMATICALLY in Derby using SQL? To be specific: CREATE TABLE A ( B VARCHAR(2) ); INSERT INTO A B VALUES ('1234'); would throw a SQLException: A truncation error was encountered trying to shrink VARCHAR '123' to length 2. that is already answered: No. You should chop it off after checking the meta-data. Or if you don't wanna check the meta-data everytime, then you must keep both your code and database in sync. But thats not a big deal, its a usual practice in validators. but my doubt is: isn't VARCHAR suppose to variate its size to fit the data? What's wrong with apache derby's VARCHAR?

• Django DecimalField returns "None" instead of empty value

  Is there a way to force django to display nothing instead of "None" for a Decimal Field that's been left blank? In my template, I show a list of all the values for a particular field. Each value is hyperlinked to a page that displays the results of a query filtered on that value. But because there are some entries with null value, my list includes actual DecimalField entries and "None" for all those that are empty. When a user clicks on None, django throws a validation error because you cannot query a DecimalField using a string. I could write if statements checking all instances of decimal fields for Nones and skipping them, but that is far from an elegant solution. Any advice? This is one part of the code, though there are other templates that derive the None value in slightly different manners: {% for item in choices %} <a href={% url app_views.field_choice item %}>{{ item }}</a><br> {% endfor %}
