  • I just discovered why all ASP.Net websites are slow, and I am trying to work out what to do about it

    I just discovered that every request in an ASP.Net web application gets a Session lock at the begging of a request, and then releases it at the end of the request!!! I mean, WTF Microsoft! In case the implication is lost on you, as it was from me at first, this basically means the following: Anytime an ASP.Net webpage is taking a long time to load (maybe due to a slow database call or whatever), and the user decides they want to navigate to a different page because they are tired of waiting, THEY CANT! The ASP.Net session lock forces the new page request to wait until the original request has finished its painfully slow load. Arrrgh. Anytime an UpdatePanel is loading slowly, and the user decides to navigate to a different page before the UpdadePanel has finished updating... THEY CANT! The ASP.Net session lock forces the new page request to wait until the original request has finished its painfully slow load. Double Arrrgh! So what are the options? So far I have come up with: Implement a Custom SessionStateDataStore, which ASP.Net supports. I haven't found too many out there to copy, and it seems kind of high risk and easy to mess up. Keep track of all requests in progress, and if a request comes in from the same user, cancel the original request. Seems kind of extreme, but it would work (I think) Don't user Session! When I need some kind of state for the user, I could just user Cache instead, and key items on the authenticated user's name, or some such thing. Again seems kind of extreme I really can't believe that the ASP.Net Microsoft team would have left such a huge performance bottleneck in the framework at version 4.0! Am I missing something obvious? How hard would it be to use a ThreadSafe collection for the Session? Arrrrghhhhhh. Any advice much appreciated.

    I have a core data entity that represents the attributes of a product, as number, price, etc. The product number is a NSString property and follows the form X.y where X is a number variable of digits and Y is one digit.     Normally we have login page with username, password filed and signin button. Using the normal form based approach we send the data on and page gets post back. Now i would like to change this using the Ajax. As Ajax too using the normal HTTP so i guess nothing in different from the existing workflow barring postback right ? Now my question is is what all securities issues can be there? and what care should be taken for doing so ? Should we encode data using say base64 or so before sending using Ajax?

    Hello All, I read on MySQL Performance Blog that when tables are large, it is better to scan full tables, instead of using indexes. I have a table with tens of millions of rows. When conducting queries, if I use no indexes, then queries are 24 times slower than with indexes. I know lot of things may cause this (e.g., are rows stored sequentially), but can you please give me some hints what might be happening? Or how I should start examining this issue? I want to understand when use of indexes is preferred and when it's not Thanks

    Hello all, I have a site that has a simple API which can be used via http. I wish to make use of the API and submit data about 1000-1500 times at one time. Here is their API: http://api.jum.name/ I have constructed the URL to make a submission but now I am wondering what is the best way to make these 1000-1500 API GET requests?     Hello, I just found something that I never heard of before and I do not agree with (by now). In an (upvoted and not further commented) answer I read "why to mix class and interfaces in the same package" So I wonder, if there are reasons to separate Interfaces and implementations in Java.     I'm in the process of making a little experiment, it grabs a YouTube page, and returns the highest quality MP4 link, then plays this in a HTML 5 Video element. Now I was using PHP with cURL to get the URL content (YouTube), but that only works on my local server (MP4 link is locked to IP address). I can't think of any other way to get the page content due to cross domain rules except a Java applet. So I've built a Java applet that should return the content of a URL.     There is little documentation on how to use the low level api for datastore and quite a lot on JPA and JDO and how it translates to it. My question is: is there any advantage in coding against the JPA or JDO specs instead of accessing directly the low level api for datastore ? How does an object within an object get released without an explicit command to do so? I'm more or less flummoxed. I'm not releasing the fetched results controller or any of it's parts, and the only part getting dealloc'd is the predicate. Any ideas?

    Hi, I was trying to access a page using curl. I could access it perfectly using the browser and using "static" strings as the URL, like: $url = "http://www.example.com/?q=1234" But when I tried to access the page using a variable in the URL string like: $url = "http://www.example.com/?q=$param" I got a 400 error code. I checked out on the web and found some comments here in this stackoverflow thread: Then, just for curiosity I did the following: $url = "http://www.example.com/?q=" . trim($param); and it worked! And no, $param did NOT contain any spaces. To me, it seems that it can be some encoding error, but I really can't find an explanation for it. Does anyone here in stackoverflow know what it can possibly be? Thanks in advance :)

  • Using routing (?) to make GET request in Rails so ID doesn't show

    I have a link in one view myapp/locations that goes to myapp/statistics?id=1 (statistics for location with ID 1) which works fine but it doesn't look pretty. I think I've seen people do this sort of thing without needing the ?id=1? I could use a POST but this is not RESTful. Is there a way I can use routing to allow the user to go to myapp/statistics?id=1 but have the user see myapp/statistics? Many thanks.

E.g. blahblah.com/articles/10-05-21/Buzzcity_releases_mobile_game_library.aspx I read somewhere that google doesn’t like the same content ‘duplicated’ in 2 (or 3) places - I am not a tecchie. THanks

  • Is the 'var' keyword bad? Or am I just old school?

    Recently I overheard junior developer ask "why do you use 'var' so much?". The mid-level developer responded "I use VAR all the time. I love it! I don't have to figure out the type." I didn't have the time or energy to get into a religious war and hey, I'm still the new guy here :-) I understand var has its place. LINQ comes to mind. But I have also always been told the use of var represents lazy programming and I should just use the correct type to begin with. If it's an int, define it as an int, not a var. When reviewing code, seeing the type makes it easier to follow. My opinion is, it's just lazy but there are exceptions. Var also reminds me of the VB/VBA variant type. It also had its place. I recall (from many years ago) its usage being less-than-desirable type and it was rather resource hungry. Am I just being stuck in my ways? Should we start using var all the time as my co-worker does?

Would I gain anything by splitting this into multiple tests? I'm all about doing things right, but I'm not going to split things up if it doesn't have practical value. I'm pretty new to unit testing, so be gentle.

  • Is "campaign_$" a bad name for a SQL column?

    PostgreSQL has allowed me to name a column "campaign_$". I like the name because it's short and to the point, and other potential names like "campaign_receipts" seem longer and less clear. BUT, I wonder if I'll eventually regret putting a $ symbol in a column name, either in PHP or in some other distant part of the architecture. Should I just stick to letters and underscores? Thanks!
