  We are sending routes to Mappoint 2013 from our application using an access database. It seems to happen with Mappoint 2010 and 2011 also. It doesn't happen on all of our clients either and it happens randomly on those who it does happen. • SQL Server 08 Express error when connecting to localhost - "Timeout expired". Works with ::1 or 127.0.0.1

  EDIT New info: Navigating to localhost:1434 in Chrome gives me an "ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE", while other ports give me an "Oops! This link appears to be broken". So it seems to binding ok there? So here's my setup so far: I've configured Windows Firewall to allow TCP on 1433 and UDP on 1434. I've set up SQL Server to use any IP on Port 1433 (using the SQL Server Configuration Manager). My hosts file contains the default entries ("127.0.0.1 localhost" and "::1 localhost"). I sometimes have a debug session of Visual Web Developer running a webserver, but it's on a specific port (localhost:5XXXX). What I've tried: I CAN ping localhost in a cmd prompt. I CAN connect to the database through SSMS if I specify 127.0.0.1 or ::1 as the server name. I CAN'T connect to the database through SSMS (or ADO.NET) if I specify localhost as the server name. I've tried both Windows and SQL Authentication The error I get is the standard Can't connect to localhost. Additional Information -- Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. (Microsoft Sql Server) Other considerations: Stopping the Visual Web Developer web server from the taskbar doesn't affect the sql problem. The SQL error log says that it's listening on some piped name url at start up (I don't see how this would affect localhost but not 127.0.0.1 though). I could probably just use 127.0.0.1 everywhere, but it scares me that localhost isn't working and I'd like to figure out why. I'm not much of a networking or sql server guy so I'm stuck. If you want me to try anything to help diagnose just put it in a comment and I'll give it a go. • Best solution for Multi-WAN failover (inside & out)?

  Looking for a way to setup 2 ISPs in failover mode, for both incoming & outgoing traffic, for our small (<100 devices) network. The leading contender for now seems to be the Peplink Balance 310. However, a reseller I spoke with said it's great for 100% outgoing connectivity, but didn't seem to be confident in its abilities to handle incoming traffic. This is important as we host our own web site, Exchange e-mail, and virtual desktops (RDP). Do any Peplink owners use this for failover of incoming traffic? Are there other devices I should be considering? We're currently using a Cisco 1800 series router & ASA 5500 series firewall, with Comcast & T-1 lines (the goal being to replace the T with DSL/FiOS {whenever that becomes availble}). Price range: ~$1000 - $2500 USD. Thanks.

• Win7-Server2008 RDP connection hangs on "Securing Remote Connection" for 20-30 seconds

  I have a problem that googling has turned up nothing, except this question on experts exchange which I borrowed most of the text from. :) When I connect via Remote Desktop to a new Windows 2008 R2 server it takes 20-30s to get past the "Securing Remote Connection" message during the login. If the password is wrong, it does this every time you attempt a login (ie its not a one time thing). However, after a successful login attempt the following logins to the same server goes faster. Most servers runs on VMware here, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

  People Pane in Outlook 2010 either does not show any emails, or only shows some emails for other folders. I've tried re-indexing and recreating the profile, to no avail. I really like the new People Pane in Outlook 2010. Not for the "Social" features, but for finding related emails and attachments. But it just does not work. It is totally broken. Do you know some trick to make it work? Using 32-bit Outlook local version, without Exchange.

  I've got to send a bulk email out to a bunch of people in reply to emails they sent me. I've got all the original emails stored in a single outlook folder. I want to extract all of the reply-to addresses from the emails in that folder so I can send an email to all of them. http://thetechieguy.wordpress.com/2008/04/22/extracting-email-address-from-outlook-2007-folder/ shows you how to export the FROM address of these emails, however a large amount of them came from a web service that sends emails 'on behalf of' the person I'm trying to mail to. So I need the reply-to address, and the export wizard doesn't do that. Does anyone have a tip on how to do this? This is Outlook 2007 on Exchange 2010.

• Outlook receives winmail.txt attachment instead of Excel, PowerPoint or Word attachments from Lotus notes senders

  Ok so the title pretty much says it all. We are offering a Hosted Exchange solution for our customer. Everything is working fine except for one customer complaining that he is receiving winmail.dat or winmail.txt attachments instead of the actual Word Excel or PowerPoint attachments he should be receiving, only when these messages come from a specific European senders, that is using Lotus Notes. I know that usually the problem is coming from Outlook senders to other mail clients, but this is not the first they inform me of this but I can't find anything on the matter so far. Has anyone ever gotten and solved this problem? If not, does anyone have any idea regarding this? I had solved this problem a few months ago, by upgrading Outlook to SP2 and then uninstalling it using the Service Pack removing tool of Microsoft. It seems that only the latest SP1 version could work but not the SP2. The problem is that now nothing is working at all. Thank you for your help, Philippe

• Backup strategy for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V

  I am in the process of planning a Hyper-V deployment with SCVMM 2008 R2. I have several VMs on VMWare Player (temporary solution) for stuff like Sharepoint 2007, 2010, and a couple of other server apps. I want to develop a resilient backup plan for this. On the software side, Data Protection Manager 2010 will support all of the server apps I run (sQL Server 2008 R2, Sharepoint, Exchange, etc). But on the hardware side (storage), what is the best way to go? Drobo seems to have issues with Hyper-V juding by a few threads on here and doesn't support DPM 2010 (which is in beta anyway) but not even the 2007 version (see http://www.drobo.com/support/best_practices.php). What storage device would work well? Do I need a home server or just an external usb drive? Capacity wise, 2tb will probably be best so I can have a small archive and implement a round-robin system. • Windows Live Messenger giving me 8100030d on sign-in

  I'll bullet point things of note: Other accounts work on the same machine. This is a problem across a few machines. I can sign in no problem on some machines. I can use Web Messenger on the problem machines. I'm using the latest version of Messenger. I've uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted. Deleting the "Windows Live Contacts" folder doesn't help. Deleting the Contacts registry entries doesn't work. I'm not using AVG (and besides, can sign in with other accounts) It successfully connects (and signs me out of eBuddy) before erroring. It creates files in the Windows Live Contacts folder. Windows XP running on the problem machines. I'm not sure what other things it could be... This has also been asked at http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Internet_Email/Chat_-_IM/Q_25449997.html, so let's see which system gets me the better response...

• Transferring FSMO roles over vpn

  I have a server located at one of our offices which is quite old and is due to be upgraded soon, this server holds the FSMO roles, I have another server in another office, both are DC's in the same domain and both are replicated, both run Server 2003 standard. I need to transfer the FSMO roles from the old server to the the one I have in the other office before I upgrade. Also I am looking at bringing in Exchange 2010 server however I cant install/configure that until I transfer the roles as it needs to be at the same site as the schema master. My question really is as both servers replicate over a vpn, how quickly will the roles transfer and will there be downtime as I need to make sure that while the transfer is running, both servers will service logon's and share files. or would it be better to do it out of hours? many thanks and apologies if I've missed out anything Regards Tom

Like this one: Error: Installation of [Windows Process Activation Service] Configuration APIs failed. the server needs to be restarted to undo the changes. My server is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition. UPDATE: I tried installing the prerequisites one by one using PowerShell. Now I have errors on RPC over Http proxy: Installation of [Web Server (IIS)] Tracing Failed, Attempt to install tracing failed with error code 0x80070643. Fatal error during installation. Searching about the error code doesn't tell me much more than something went wrong when trying to update windows. Installing Http Tracing alone also doesn't make any difference.

  I have an interesting DNS question (well interesting to me atleast). I just installed an hmail server in our remote office to act as an MX backup in the event our exchange server goes down. The 2 host names are mail.campbellsurvey.com mail2.campbellsurvey.com mail points to the address 98.XXX.91.XXX mail2 points to the address 70.XXX.190.XXX How would I setup a PTR record on the ISP end to reflect both hostnames? Does the PTR have to point to EXACTLY mail.campbellsurvey.com or can it point to just campbellsurvey.com? because right now anything passing through the primary static address in our pool (the one used for standard internet) is identified as mail.campbellsurvey.com. My only idea to fix this was to move the mail server to the next available address and give it only it the name mail.campbellsurvey.com but I wanted to see if there was another way. • Demote 2003 DC from within Directory Services Restore Mode

  We've had a child DC fail on us, and can't get into Windows on it as Directory Services is failing. A restore of the backed-up active directory hasn't worked due to a corruption, and so we've decided to demote the child DC and - for now - run AD from the PDC only. However, dcpromo /demote doesn't work from Safe Mode or Directory Services Restore Mode. We don't want to do a complete reinstall, as we have Exchange running on the child DC. Anyone know how (if?) we can demote the DC within safe mode or otherwise get into windows? Thanks

Searching about the error code doesn't tell me much more than something went wrong when trying to update windows. Installing Http Tracing alone also doesn't make any difference.

• How to recertify Notes .id file if you can't get into Notes Admin

  I've got a bit of a catch-22 situation here. My company used to use Notes, but migrated to Exchange several years ago. As such the Notes server was mothballed. I now need to get back into Notes to get some data from an old app we had. The trouble is, all my .id files have expired. I can't recertify them, as I can't log into Notes Admin - because the .id has expired. Is there any way round this? Thanks, Ben

• Server 2008 Hard Faults

  Hey all, plase bear with me as I haven't looked at a server in a very long time. The problem I am having is with a Windows 2008 Standard FE Service Pack 2 Intel Xeon X3430 @ 2.40 2.39 GHZ 4 GB Memory 64 Bit There seems to be no problems other than the physical memory peaking at 91%, always with over 100 Hard Faults Per Second. To my understanding hard faults should be fairly rare on a machine with. Are there any logs I can show you? Or investigate myself. The general performance of the machine is ok, i can access SBS2008 and change settings fairly smoothly without hangs etc. However, we connect to the server and do quite a bit of SQL via an application. For a record to retrieve say 20 rows, it can take 20+ seconds. • Is it possible to aggregate multiple email accounts into a single Outlook 2007 Inbox/.OST file?

  I'm using Outlook 2007 and would like to combine multiple email accounts (some are Exchange, some IMAP) into a single Inbox/.OST mail file. An example of the functionality I'm looking for is the Blackberry, where you can configure multiple email accounts and then access that mail either by the inbox for that specific account or via a single aggregated mailbox. In the single mailbox case, when you reply to a given piece of mail the Blackberry is smart enough to switch your "From" address to be that of the account where the email came in to. I'm essentially looking for this functionality in Outlook. Are there native options and/or third party plug-ins which do this?

• Storing multipe credentials for the same server.

  I have a need to connect to the same exchange server with multiple accounts. I'm using Extra Outlook to simultaneously load different profiles connecting to each account. Here's a simplified example of the accounts I need to use: log in to test.local.domain user1: [email protected] user2: [email protected] user3: [email protected] I am always being prompted for passwords when opening an Outlook instance. Essentialy only the last username/password combination for each server is stored by Vista. So if I launch Outlook with the same profile I used last, before starting launching using a profile for a different account, I'm not prompted for authentication. Aternatively, adding a new entry in Vista's Stored User Names and Passwords dialog with credentials for user2, when there is alraedy an entry for user1 on the same target server will replace the existing user1 entry with the new user 2 entry. I'm guessing the same thing is going on silently behind the scenes when I provide Outlook credentials. How can I configure Vista's credential management to store credentials for multiple users on the same server?

• SBS 2008 Duplicate Files - what can I delete

  I'm trying to look after my company's SBS 2008 server. It keeps running out of space on the C: (OS)drive, so Exchange stops when it gets down to 4Gb free space. From what I can tell after the last time I had a consultant in to fix it, there should comfortably be about 20Gb. Running a duplicate files report gives me a huge list of duplicated files, and identifies just how much space they are hogging. But my question is, which ones can I delete to recover the space? Can I tell, from what's shown on the report, the files that are redundant and can safely be deleted?

• "The Operation Failed." accepting METHOD: PUBLISH iCalendar files in .pst account

  if I create a new Mail Profile using the Internet E-mail wizard, ie, creating a new local .pst account, and then try to add a .ics iCalendar file with a METHOD of PUBLISH to the calendar of that account, I get the error "The Operation Failed." If I change any of the above it works ok, eg, if I use an Exchange account or METHOD: REQUEST in the iCalendar file. I'm using Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 but I think the user that originally reported this was using Outlook 2007. Does anyone have any idea of why this might be? Thanks, Jamie Kitson

• Entourage Reminders for events not on calendar

  After a series of nasty mishaps, I needed to create a new Entourage profile and re-populate my calendar by resynching it with my Exchange Server. Now I'm receiving multiple notifications for a single appointment -- two or even four at once. (Perhaps four is due to the intermediate 'reset' attempts I made before discarding and creating a new profile.) Reviewing my calendar I see only a single appointment, not multiple appointments. Checking my Outlook calendar confirms only a single appointment. My local calendar is completely empty. Is there a separate Entourage database for reminders that I can clear or resync? Is there somewhere else for calendar appointments to live where I'm not looking?

• Can't uninstall SBS 2003 in sbs 2003 -> sbs 2008 migration

  I'm trying to remove sbs from my sbs 2003 server. Also I'm logged in as Administrator. However When I start to go through the wizard it gives me the following error. You must be a member of the Domain Admins, Schema Admins, and Enterprise Admins group. I then did some research and found this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842694) and I came to the point where it says to delete the server from Sites and Services. However when I clicked delete it wanted me to dcpromo the box first. However I have read you have to uninstall exchange first and then dcpromo it to remove AD. Any ideas?
