• Cant remove/delete symlink

  I have tried to create a symlink and it threw this error: ln: accessing `.test': Permission denied Now I can't unlink or delete the symlink file. Tried Googling for help but could not find a solution. • C# IOException: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

  Hi, I have a slight problem. What my application is supose to do, is to watch a folder for any newly copied file with the extention '.XSD' open the file and assign the lines to an array. After that the data from the array should be inserted into a MySQL database, then move the used file to another folder if it's done. The problem is that the application works fine with the first file, but as soon as the next file is copied to the folder I get this exception for example: 'The process cannot access the file 'C:\inetpub\admission\file2.XPD' because it is being used by another process'. If two files on the onther hand is copied at the same time there's no problem at all. I read alot of other threads and was lead to believe that by flushing the file stream would help...   So I have wcf rest service which succesfuly runs from a console app, if I navigate to: http://localhost:8000/Service/picture/300/400 my image is displayed note the 300/400 sets the width and height of the image within the body of the html page. • saved image in the picturebox shows no preview

  This is the inverse of the "What programming language do you wish would catch on?" question. I was a Delphi programmer for many years, and I still appreciate its power, but I dislike verbose programming languages. So I would love to see Pascal put out to pasture. The same goes for BASIC in any form, despite the fact that it's the language I cut my teeth on. When I look at cathedrals of beauty like Haskell and REBOL, BASIC just makes me cringe. (VB.NET is tolerable, but barely. It has a few nice language features I'd like to see moved to C#.) My dislike of Pascal and VB.NET is subjective. They are powerful languages, but I dislike their syntax esthetically. Try to explain your reasoning, if you can, even if it's just "I don't like its syntax." This question is not meant to be a flame war, argumentative, or hateful. It's meant to be a straightforward, honest discussion of programmers' dislikes.

• Uploading to YouTube makes all browser tabs and devices disconnect

  Whenever I upload a video to YouTube all other browser tabs behave like there is no connection at all. It even affects my phone and other computers on the network therefor I think it has to do with my router. When the upload is done everything works normally again. I never observed this behavior with any other upload. My router is a Fritz!Box 7390 and my uploading PC is connected through a 1000mb/s switch (wired) to the router. Uploading through another browser does not change anything. I understand that other sites become slow as the network resources are limited, but stopping altogether feels wrong. speed.io measures for my internet connection: 40.894 Kbit/s down, 2.685 Kbit/s up, 29 ms ping, 2.048 con/m connects

• Bay Speaker Panel Installation

  I purchased a bay speaker panel that has a molex connector and a sound connector. Do I need to run the sound connector through my tower and somehow out the back into the IO panel? Or is there supposed to be a place on my motherboard for it to connect to? This is a replacement for normal desktop speakers for me to save desk space. • Restart an in-use NFS server without interruption (within timeout)

  I have a bunch of compute clients working on jobs, saving output data to a NAS machine. All machines are centos 6.2. They mount it via automount NFS, with a timeout of 1200 (default config). The NAS machine needs to be restarted. If I can restart the machine within that 1200s (20 minute) window, will the clients just block on IO until it comes back up? A minor interruption (pause) in service is ok, as long as it doesn't cause the running processes to error out. If necessary I could loop through and SIGSTOP all job processes, restart and resume them -- I just don't want to break the open file handles. How can I run a restart like this without killing processes with open files?

• Cannot run gnome-session

  I'm having issues running an X Windows session on a RHEL5 64-bit server - whenever I execute the command "gnome-session &", the process goes into the background but nothing happens. I have Exceed installed on my Windows machine which is running when I try to start the gnome-session. I've tried just starting firefox by itself instead of the whole gnome session, but it doesn't work either. Any suggestions? BTW, here's the error message I get when I try to start firefox: firefox: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server localhost:10.0.

  Hello all, Since some time I've been investigating more time into profiling things better, really think about how to do a thing and why. Now I'm going to start a new project, where I will be writing a report about. The report will be about anything what I wrote in the project, why, and I'll be investigating some things and do particular research about them. I've seen some reports, such as game programming in Haskell using FRP. However, after reading several reports they all seem to be build different. I have a few questions about writing a report: 1] What are the things I really should include, and what are the things I really shouldn't include? 2] Is it useful to include graphs about different methods/approaches to a several problem, where you only included one into your project, to show WHY you didn't include the other methods. Or should I just explain the method/approach used into the project. 3] Should I only be writing the report after I've completed the project, or should I also write pages about what I expect, how I'm going to build the software? • What sort of things can cause a whole system to appear to hang for 100s-1000s of milliseconds?

  I am working on a Windows game and while rendering, some computers will experience intermittent pauses ("hitches" for lack of a better term). When profiled they appear in seemingly random places in the code. Eventually I noticed that it wasn't just my process that was affected, but (seemingly) every process on the system. All of the threads in my application hitch at once. The CPU utilization drops during these hitches and it appears as if most processes make no progress. This leads me to believe this may be an Operating System or Driver issue, but it only occurs while playing the game (and only on some systems). What sort of operations might the operating system be doing that would require the kernel to pause all user threads and block. Some kind of I/O? At first I thought of paging but my impression is that would only affect a single process, no? Some systems in use: Windows, DirectX (3d), nVidia cards (unknown if replicates on ATI), using overlapped io for streaming

• Keeping folder of files in sync over 3 machines

  Morning, Got 3 machines that have user content on them, which I need to keep in sync. This is a 3 way sync. Currently I run rsync but we just don't handle deletes. Have looked at something like gluster, but that seems a little over the top Any other software out there to do a 3 way sync, or a good network file system...? There is for web servers so we don't want a slow / IO hungry process. 3 servers... user content could be added to 1 and needs to be moved to other two.

  hi all I've Ubuntu 10.04LTS 64-bit running on a openvz container and Cherokee 1.0.8 compiled from source. The virtual memory usage of cherokee-worker is around 430 MB even after disabling I/O cache from Advanced - I/O Cache - NOT enabled. Is this issue particular to openvz? • Poor disk performance with high disk capacity usage

  I've heard numerous times in the web hosting industry that using "too much" disk space on a drive is bad for performance. Is this just a myth? Can someone explain why this is an issue, even in a situation where the amount of IO done to the drive would be the same at 10% as it would be at 90%? I'm especially curious in the case of virtual servers. If I set up 10 Logical volumes as the virtual disks for some VMs, is it going to run better if I "waste" 20% of the disk space?

• Backing Up User Data when data is not in use. Should I be concerned?

  This may be a dumb question. I would like to use duplicity to make backups to Amazon S3 of directories, each of which contains a different user's data. Each directory could be written to at any time. So I have two questions: Should I be concerned that a scheduled backup of a directory might occur in the middle of data being written to files in the directory, resulting in a corrupted backup? And if that is a valid concern, how would I go about temporarily delaying an operation while IO was happening, to try to minimize that effect. Thanks for the advice

• Writing directory: permission denied even though dir seems to be chmodded correctly

  I am having some trouble creating files in directory on my Ubuntu machine: I added myself to the www-data group in order for me to easily edit stuff in my /var/www dir on my development machine. stat /var/www shows the following: File: ‘/var/www’ Size: 4096 Blocks: 8 IO Block: 4096 map Device: 808h/2056d Inode: 142853 Links: 3 Access: (0775/drwxrwxr-x) Uid: ( 33/www-data) Gid: ( 33/www-data) Access: 2010-12-30 16:03:18.563998000 +0100 Modify: 2010-12-30 16:02:52.663998000 +0100 Change: 2010-12-30 16:03:13.111998001 +0100 Still, it is impossible for me to create anything below /var/www (the only way for it to work is to chmod it to 777. What am I missing?

I've tried: Protecting the foreach with if (!$backups) Protecting the Remove-Item with if (Test-Path $file -PathType Leaf) Protecting the Remove-Item with if ([IO.File]::Exists($file.FullName) -ne $true) None of these seem to work, what if the recommended way of preventing a foreach loop from being entered if the list is empty?

• Check SSD stability before returning it as broken?

  I have the Transcend SSD 720 256GB 2,5" 7mm disk. And randomly I get disk IO in utorrent and large files copying to external will fail. I have removed it from my laptop since I need max stability. I use my laptop on exams. How can I really bench/make-it-sweat whilst connected to my desktop? I want to re-create some of the fails as I need proof if I am to return it. Firmware is updated. BIOS on laptop is updated. I could just completely nul the disk and then check for bad sectors, but is there anything else I could use for testing? Edit: It has 7 bad sector replacement operations. What does it mean?

  I'm looking for a simple and effective way of measuring total bytes received/sent from a single process upon its termination. Basically, I am looking for a tool which has the interface similar to "time" and "/usr/bin/time", e.g. measure-net-data <prog_to_run> <prog_args> Received (b): XYZ Sent (b): ABC I know that there are many tools for bandwidth/network monitoring, but as far I can tell all of them are performing the measurements it real-time, which is inappropriate not only because of overhead but also because of the inconvenience - I would need to stop the program, capture the output of the tool and then kill it. I have seen that newer versions of Linux 2.6.20+ provide /proc/<pid>/io/ which contain the information I'm looking for; however, everything under /proc/<pid> when the process terminates, so I'm again back to the same problem as with any network monitoring tool.

• RAID 10 over RAID 5 when using SSDs

  I am considering implementing an iSCSI shared storage array using SATA SSDs instead of the 15k RPM SAS drives we normally purchase. We normally use RAID 10 because of spindle contention with the random IO produced by virtualized workloads. I was wondering if we could switch to RAID 5 or RAID 6 to have more usuable space now that spindle contention is less of an issue. A question in my mind is how much overhead there is from the controller calculating parity. I am aware that this configuration will not allow TRIM to function. Our current workloads are running on a Dell H800 with a 24 bay external enclosure.
