• Is there any er diagram tool in Windows that I can use to connect to a MySQL 4.1 database in Unix?

  I have a few test databases in some Unix SUSE 8 servers and initially the plan was to find some tools which can directly create the ERD straight from the server until someone told me that I can find tools to connect from the Windows PC straight to the Unix MySQL database. So I saw MySQL query analyzer which can do this but unfortunately there are no options to create an ERD. So are there any tools, preferably open source or free which can do this? I've done some basic googling but didn't know what is the exact terms to use to search for this and have so far found nothing useful yet. Updates: I just found out that the latest version of workbench doesn't work MySQL 4.1 Enterprise Edition which is the version that I have! And I try to use fabFORCE DBDesigner but I can't even connect at all using that one :( What can work for this version of MySQL?

• Eliminating code duplication in a single file

  Sadly, a project that I have been working on lately has a large amount of copy-and-paste code, even within single files. Are there any tools or techniques that can detect duplication or near-duplication within a single file? I have Beyond Compare 3 and it works well for comparing separate files, but I am at a loss for comparing single files. Thanks in advance. Edit: Thanks for all the great tools! This project is an ASP.NET/C# project, but I work with a variety of languages including Java; I'm interested in what tools are best (for any language) to remove duplication.

• Visual VoiceXML/VXML development tool?

  Hi, all. Does anyone know of any tools out there that will let me run and debug a VXML application visually? There are a ton of VXML development tools, but they all require you to build your application within them. I have an existing application that uses JSPs to generate VXML, and I'm looking for a way to navigate through and debug the rendered VXML in much the same way that Firebug allows one to do this with HTML. I have some proxy-like tools that let me inspect the rendered code as it is sent to the VXML browser, but there's a ton of JS, which makes traversing the code by hand rather difficult. Has anyone worked with a product that allows for this? Thanks! IVR Avenger

• My app has some basic problems, and it stops working

  I am writing a basic application which contains two activities. Both contain a TextView showing the title and the first one contains an EditText in which the user types a message and clicks on a button on its side, the second activity is launched which shows the message the user types. It has the following problems: The title (the first TextView in both the activities) doesn't show in the middle of the line, despite of the android:gravity="center_horizontal" attribute. The EditText in the first activity does not show at all. When I click on the button, the app stops saying "Unfortunately Write n Display and stopped.", rather than launching the second activity at all. I don't have adequate knowledge about logcat, but I have followed the steps somebody had told me, that is WindowOpen Perspective Other DDMS Then run the app and select the package name from the Devices and click on log cat, select the exception(s) and export to text file. All contained in the text file is : : E/(): Device disconnected: 1 Since I am not sure of using log cat, so I am posting a screenshot to make clear what I have done.   When creating an WPF application with the MVVM pattern, it seems I have to gather the necessary tools myself to even begin the most rudimentary event handling, e.g. AttachedBehaviors I get from here DelegateCommands I get from here Now I'm looking for some way to handle the ItemSelected event in a ComboBox and am getting suggestions of tricks and workarounds to do this (using a XAML trigger or have other elements bound to the selected item, etc.). Ok, I can go down this road, but it seems to be reinventing the wheel. It would be nice to just have an ItemSelected command that I can handle in my ViewModel. Am I missing some set of standard tools or is everyone doing MVVM with WPF basically building and putting together their own collection of tools just so they can do the simplest plumbing tasks with events and commands, things that take only a couple lines in code-behind with a Click="eventHandler"?

• How well are SVG filter elements defined?

  We are considering using SVG filters as part of our toolchain, serving the SVG to browsers capable of supporting it, while serving pre-rendered PNGs to other. One problem we noticed is that the rendering of the filter chains seems to be very inconsistent across renderers. When looking at the "filters01" example from the SVG specification, the rendering looks very different across the tools we tried. Chrome (5.0.307.11) failed to render the image, while other tools (Firefox 3.6, Opera 10.10, Inkscape 0.47, GIMP 2.6.7) render something vaguely similar in style to the picture in the specification, but no two are truly the same. Is that an issue of under-specification or are the tools just not there? If we would use SVG with filter effects: is there a reference tool that can give us a rendering the way it is intended by the spec?

• C++ to bytecode compiler for Silverlight CLR?

  I'd like to be able to compile a C/C++ library so that it runs within a safe managed runtime in the Silverlight CLR. There are several tools for doing this with the JVM that allows C++ code to run within a CRT emulation layer (see NestedVM, LLJVM, etc), which effectively allows C++ code to be run within a Java Applet. There's even a tool for this for the Adobe Flash VM (see Alchemy). However, I can't seem to find any tools like this for the CLR. fyi, the MSVC tools don't seem to allow for this: The /clr:pure flag will create C++ code that runs in the CLR, but it isn't safe (because the CRT isn't safe) and /clr:safe requires massive code changes (no native types, etc).

• How do I check out Eclipse projects from CVS using the command line

  Hi. I'm trying to check out the Mylyn project from Eclipse. However, I can't use Eclipse to check out the projects and am having to do it via the command line. I'm behind a firewall so am basing my attempt on http://wiki.eclipse.org/CVS_Howto#CVS_and_firewalls. I'm not very familiar with CVS. • Can't Install ADT. org.eclipse.wst.xml.ui is missing

  I am having trouble getting the Android Development Tools to install. I overcame one error involving the GEF. I now have a new error. Missing requirement: Android Development Tools 0.9.6.v201002051504-24846 (com.android.ide.eclipse.adt.feature.group 0.9.6.v201002051504-24846) requires 'org.eclipse.wst.xml.ui 0.0.0' but it could not be found I am running Kubuntu 9.10 and Eclipse 3.5. I have managed to get the Android DDMS to install. But I keep running into blocks with the Development Tools. I have the Android SDK installed. What do I need to do in order get the missing component?

• Developing Silverlight 1.0 Applications on VS2008 SP1

  Hi, Can anyone point me to any guides, howto's or general documentation on how to develop Silverlight 1.0 (it has to be 1.0) on VS2008 SP1. I have searched high and low for information, and it all seems to be out of date (referencing Silverlight 1.0 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 beta, release candidate and alpha packages) or just plain doesn't work under VS2008 SP1. What do I need to install, and which project do I need to create? I have installed the Silverlight 1.0 SDK, which gave me no starting point, the Silverlight 2.0 Tools for Visual Studio after a website suggested you could use that to develop 1.0 apps, but the suggested template doesn't exist, and Silverlight 3.0 Tools for Visual Studio, which was a last ditch resort. • Removing zombie locks in Subversion

  I'm trying to find a way to remove zombie locks using the Subversion command line tools. The eventual goal is to do this from a hook script, but I haven't been able to work out the command line to use when you only have a physical repository path. (Using svnadmin rmlocks only seems to work for locks which exist in the HEAD revision.) Ideally, I'd like to do this via the post-commit hook script using the command line tools. (I'm aware of the python script for this purpose, but we'd prefer not to install python on that server for this single use.) We're a .NET shop, so creating a tool with the SharpSVN library is also a possibility, but the only unlock capability there appears to be in the SVNClient class. So it's really two questions: Is there a way to do this with the command line tools? If not, is there a way to do it from SharpSVN? (Or perhaps another library?)

• vs2008 mystery: Quick macro record and playback shortcuts not allowed?

  in vs2008, Tools, Macros, Record TemporaryMacro keyboard shortcut toggle is Ctrl+Shift+R; Run TemporaryMacro keyboard shorcut is Ctrl+Shift+P for playback. I've used them before, but they've stopped working. If I open Tools, Options, Keyboard, then navigate to a command like Tools.Run that has no assigned keyboard shortcut, I can experiment by pretending to assign a keyboard shorcut: I simply click inside the "Press shortcut keys:" textbox and try different keystroke combinations. Examples: Ctrl+p: currently assigned to File.Print Ctrl+r: currently assigned to various uses Ctrl+Shift+Q: available Ctrl+Shift+B: currently assigned to Build.BuildSolution BUT vs2008 will not even allow me to type either of Ctrl+Shift+P or Ctrl+Shift+R in the "Press shortcut keys:" textbox. When I type those combinations, nothing appears in the "Press shortcut keys:" textbox. Please note: I can record and playback a temporary macro by using the menu commands, however, the mouse is like a turtle when compared to the keyboard.   One if the first things I learned when I started with C# was the most important one. You can decompile any .NET assembly with Reflector or other tools. Many developers are not aware of this fact and most of them are shocked when I show them their source code. Protection against decompilation is still a difficult task. I am still looking for a fast, easy and secure way to do it. I don't want to obfuscate my code so my method names will be a,b,c or so. Reflector or other tools should be unable to recognize my application as .NET assembly at all. I know about some tools already but they are very expensive. Is there any other way to protect my applications?

• Super user powers in development environment?

  Is it too much to ask for when I ask the IT department to give my development team an environment where we can use whatever software that we can download without having to have security check those tools? Of course, the software can be checked by security before deploying to Test, and the development environment can be on a VLAN that is not accessible from outside. This would greatly aid us by allowing us to use whatever open-source testing tools that we want. I'm asking because we have such tight restrictions on the software approval process, and I hear of other teams that have an environment where they can configure their local server however they want and they can use whatever tools they want. What's the norm out there? Thank you for any comments!

• ADT will not allow creation of Android Activity

  I installed the ADT bundle from http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html yesterday, and I was following a basic Hello World tutorial. I created a new Android Application Project with a Blank Activity named MainActivity. The resulting project has an empty src folder and empty res\layout folder. There is a R.java file in the gen folder but it has no reference to MainActivity. This is what the SDK manager says I have installed Android SDK Tools v 22.6 Android SDK Platform-tools v 19.0.1 Android SDK Build-tools v 19 SDK Platform v 3 ARM EABI v7a System Image v 2 Android Support Library v 19.0.1 Google USB Driver v 9 I also tried manually creating an activity by right clicking the src folder and going to Android Activity, but when I hit Finish on the creation wizard, nothing happens. Does anyone have any clues as to what's going on? Did I miss a key component to install or something?

  On the web there are plenty of color scheme/palette generator tools and color palettes galleries. All of these tools/gelleries show many 3 to 5 colors palette as final result. Some of these tools: http://kuler.adobe.com, http://www.colorexplorer.com I know my question might sound ridicolous to someone who is involved in web dedign, but I don't understand what to do with these color palette. I mean, if I have to create a website, how am I supposed to apply this color palette to the website. Which color goes as foreground text, which one as background, which one for the links, which one for the page titles and so on? What are these color palette generators useful for then?! Thanks!

• How do I change the JAVA_HOME for ant?

  I'm doing java work on a class server where I don't have root. Whenever I try to compile using ant, it points to the wrong directory (/usr/tomcat instead of /usr/tomcat/jre ). One of the things we were told to do when setting up our user accounts was to add export JAVA_HOME=/usr/tomcat/jre to the .bashrc file. I don't know if that was supposed to take care of the problem but it doesn't seem to. So, how can I change the JAVA_HOME property for ant but only for when I run ant? EDIT: echo $JAVA_HOME points to /usr/tomcat/jre echo $JAVA_HOME\bin points to /usr/tomcat/jrebin The problem is when I normally run ant I get this error: Unable to locate tools.jar. Expected to find it in /usr/tomcat/lib/tools.jar Buildfile: build.xml compile: [javac] Compiling 1 source file to /home/ejm244/build/classes BUILD FAILED /home/ejm244/build.xml:9: Unable to find a javac compiler; com.sun.tools.javac.Main is not on the classpath. • Visual Studio 2008, MSBuild: "replacement" projects

  Hello, My solution has a library project which needs a special environment to be built (lots of external libraries and tools)... but it is not vital to our application. We'd like to avoid installing these tools when not necessary (most of our developers work on other parts of code). We have created another project which has the same API, but has an empty implementation and is compilable without those external tools. I'd like to be able to easily switch between those projects and still get all the references in other projects correct. I don't know VS/MSBuild very well, but willing to learn whatever is necessary. Is it possible? I am looking for ideas... We're using Subversion, and solutions involving some hacks inside VCS are also welcome.

• Where is BuildConfig.DEBUG?

  My project doesn't seem to be aware of this new constant that's apparently auto-generated in Android Tools r17 builds: "Added a feature that allows you to run some code only in debug mode. Builds now generate a class called BuildConfig containing a DEBUG constant that is automatically set according to your build type. You can check the (BuildConfig.DEBUG) constant in your code to run debug-only functions such as outputting debug logs." I've confirmed that this class is not being auto-generated anywhere in my project by the new tools. I deleted all project outputs (including all gen folders) and rebuilt, and only R.java classes are being generated. Why are the tools not generating the BuildConfig class? It may be relevant that I'm using IntelliJ.
