• how to "think in templates", i.e. how to know that a problem can be solved using templates and how to adapt to it?

  I decided to improve my knowledge of template meta-programming, i know the syntax and rules and been playing with counteless examples from online resources. i understand how powerfull templates can be and how much compile time optimization they can provide but i still cant "think in templates", that is, i cant seem to know by myself if a certain problem could best be solved with templates (instead of something else) and if it can, how to adapt that problem to templates. so what im asking is, is there some kind of online resource or maybe book that teaches how to identify problems that could best be solved with templates and how to adapt that problem. basically i want to learn to "think in templates". already asked on stackoverflow but once again people just redirected me to resources on how to use templates, when im really asking is how to know when to use template meta-programming and how to adapt that problem to templates. thanks in advance.

• Screen brightness dull after upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04

  After upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 I found that I could not increase screen brightness. I'm using a Samsung NC110 netbook. Initially the function key to modify brightness did not respond at all. After implementation of the first part of the fix, the key came alive and the brightness bar could be modified. Yet at maximum brightness indicated the screen still remained very dull. The 2nd part of the fix cures that problem, at least for this type of machine. First part of the fix was copied and modified in line with my experience from following post: How to control Brightness Open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T). Then type sudo nano /etc/default/grub. It will ask for your password. Type it in. Around the 11th line, there will be something like: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash". Change it to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor" Save the file by Ctrl+O followed by Ctrl+X. Then run sudo update-grub in the terminal. Reboot and see if backlight adjustment works. Then I needed to modify the rc.local file. Therefore read below fix to understand the procedure: problem with adjusting brightness Ubuntu 14.04 In my case I had 2 folders listed under /sys/class/backlight which were: intel_backlight samsung I realized that the samsung folder is governing. I had to modify the check for max brightness to: cat /sys/class/backlight/samsung/max_brightness In my case the max value obtained is 8. Besides putting this into rc.local, I also had to uncomment the first line to get this working. My rc.local under /etc/ now looks as follows: !/bin/sh -e # # rc.local # # This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel. # Make sure that the script will "exit 0" on success or any other # value on error. # # In order to enable or disable this script just change the execution # bits. # # By default this script does nothing. echo 8 > /sys/class/backlight/samsung/brightness exit 0 Now I can modify brightness on my netbook and also can get the screen up to its maximum brightness.   I've been looking to embed Lisp in some C++ code. Two options I'm interested in is Bigloo Scheme and ECL (Common Lisp). Reading through the docs they seem to support a very similar feature set. Obviously Bigloo is Scheme and ECL is CLisp, but what other differences do they have? In particular I'm interested in the following criteria: Ease of embedding (for C++, not just C). I don't want to write a bunch of boilerplate. Performance. Bigloo is performance based and has many compiler optimization options, although I can't find anything comparable for ECL. Style of coding. This one is more for Bigloo - is it more functional than ECL? I'm targeting this question towards someone who has used both.

• Compiling realtime kernel from RHEL 6 MRG sources on CentOS 6

  I'm trying to compile kernel-rt-2.6.33.9-rt31.75.el6rt.src.rpm from RHEL6 MRG source RPMs on Centos 6 x86_64 system. It's first time I'm doing this, so I did research on how to do this properly. From what I found, I did: rpm -ihv kernel-rt-2.6.33.9-rt31.75.el6rt.src.rpm cd ~/rpmbuild/SPECS nano kernel-rt.spec rpmbuild -bb kernel-rt.spec 2> build-err.log | tee build-out.log in kernel-rt.spec I've disbleed compilation of variants I don' need - ie compile only rt and firmware. Also defined not to build debuginfo. After compilation finished, I've got in ~/rpmbuild/RPMS/x86_64/ two files: kernel-rt-2.6.33.9-rt31.75.el6rt.x86_64.rpm kernel-rt-devel-2.6.33.9-rt31.75.el6rt.x86_64.rpm but when I tried to install kernel, I got error message: $ sudo rpm -ihv kernel-rt-2.6.33.9-rt31.75.el6rt.x86_64.rpm error: Failed dependencies: kernel-rt-firmware = 2.6.33.9-rt31.75.el6rt is needed by kernel-rt-2.6.33.9-rt31.75.el6rt.x86_64 There was no folder ~/rpmbuild/RPMS/noarch - where I would expect it to show up. Also, I've tried rpmbuild --rebuild kernel-rt-2.6.33.9-rt31.75.el6rt.src.rpm, but got same results... What am I doing wrong? I've seen this question, but it suggests what I tried already and I want to build kernel myself, not use pre-built from SLC.

• Unconvert Text File from Binary Format

  I've got a rather large CSV file (~700MB) which I know to consist of lines of 27-character alpha-numeric hashes; no commas or anything fancy. Somehow, during its migration from Windows to Linux (via winSCP and then a few regular SCPs), it has converted into some kind of binary format I am unfamiliar with. If I open the file in vi, everything appears fine, and it says [converted] at the bottom, although I know it's not a line endings issue (and dos2unix doesn't help). If I 'head' the file, it looks proper except for a "ÿþ" at the beginning of the first line. If I open up the file in nano, however, I see the "ÿþ" at the start and then "^@" before every character (even newlines and EoF). If I try to re-save or copy the file (say via: head file.csv short.txt), this special encoding is preserved. I copied the first ten lines out of vi (which displays it properly) into my Windows clipboard via my SSH client, then pasted it into a new text file, test.txt. This file is visually identical when opened in vi (and similar through 'head', minus the "ÿþ"), although it's roughly half of the filesize. Additionally, file test.txt test.txt: ASCII text file short.txt short.txt: I have no idea what format this once-text file got converted to (it's notoriously hard to search the internet for symbols), but surely there must be some way to convert it back. Any ideas?

• Why can't “knife data bag from file” find existing json file on chef server?

  Summary: I'm running into a problem with "knife data bag from file", where knife doesn't recognize the .json data bag file pulled down from a remote git repo. Background: I'm currently trying to transition from chef-solo use to chef server while using the cookbooks, data bags and other chef info from our remote git repo. I've currently pulled down a copy of our git repo and set the cookbook path and data bag path in knife.rb. I also loaded the cookbooks, made adjustments, etc. Details: When trying to load our .json data bags by doing "knife data bag add from file FOLDER FILE" it looks like it worked until I do "knife data bag list" and it comes up blank. So I decided to try adding the edit option at the end to see what's being loaded, if it is. This is the error I get: knife data bag from file local_settings test.json -e nano ERROR: Could not find or open file 'test.json' in current directory or in 'data_bags/local_settings/test.json' The data bag file does exist, in the proper location, in a tested, working json file. I've also sometimes gotten an error saying "could not open data bag "local_settings". I would obviously like to keep the data bag path within the appropriate git repo folder to be able to keep track of changes in a more centralized location (our git repo, as opposed to the chef server). Any solutions, advice or pointers in the right direction are appreciated.
