• In web project can we write core services layer without knowledge of UI ?

  I am working on web project. We are using flex as UI layer. My question is often we are writing core service layer separately from web/UI layer so we can reuse same services for different UI layer/technology. So practically is it possible to reuse same core layer services without any changes/addition in API with different kind of UI technologies/layers. For e.g. same core service layer with UI technology which supports synchronized request response (e.g. jsp etc.) and non synchronize or event driven UI technology (e.g Ajax, Flex, GWT etc.) or with multiple devices like (computers, mobiles, pdas etc.). Personally I feel its very tough to write core service layer without any knowledge of UI. Looking for thoughts from other people.

• Selenium testing with checksums (md5)

  I am new at selenium testing and am writing a bunch of tests for a webpage that relies heavily on javascript user interaction. At first I wrote a lot of assertions of the style If I press button A" then assert number of visible rows = x, assert checkboxes checked are such assert title = bar .... [20 more] and so on. Then I switched to checksumming the HTML using MD5: If I press button A" then assert md5(html) = 8548bccac94e35d9836f1fec0da8115c. And it made my life a whole lot easier... But is this a bad practice in any way?

• Tests that are 2-3 times bigger than the testable code

  Is it normal to have tests that are way bigger than the actual code being tested? For every line of code I am testing I usually have 2-3 lines in the unit test. Which ultimately leads to tons of time being spent just typing the tests in (mock, mock and mock more). Where are the time savings? Do you ever avoid tests for code that is along the lines of being trivial? Most of my methods are less than 10 lines long and testing each one of them takes a lot of time, to the point where, as you see, I start questioning writing most of the tests in the first place. I am not advocating not unit testing, I like it. Just want to see what factors people consider before writing tests. They come at a cost (in terms of time, hence money), so this cost must be evaluated somehow. How do you estimate the savings created by your unit tests, if ever?

• Web UI prototyping tools

  Can anyone recomend me a simple web UI prototyping tool, so I could quicky prototype the look of a my web site. I have tried to use MS Visio for this, but found it very "user un-friendly". What I really need is to be able quicky sketch the layout of the page, put some links, images and buttons on in, play a little bit with a colors (CSS), and it would be great it this tool could support navigation between the pages - but it is not essential. I would rather consider a low-cost or an open-source solution, since I am not a web designer and not going to use that tool on a daily basis.

• InvalidCastException: System.Web.UI.PartialCachingControl -> MyCustomControl when OutputCaching

  The problem: I am unable to use OutputCaching with my controls which derives from MyCustomControl. Controls are loaded dynamically using definitions from database with Page.LoadControl method. When I add to ascx <%@ OutputCache VaryByParam="*" Duration="3600"% the "InvalidCastException: System.Web.UI.PartialCachingControl - MyCustomControl" exception is thrown. I am unable to modify assembly witch contains dynamic loading controls logic. Is there any way to fix it in derived controls? The second question is about iis7 and native output caching - is it resolves this problem? (I tried to set up several performance counters and I saw that cache wasn't hit...)

• iPhone real memory climbs when interacting with UI

  I've been using the Activity Monitor to check the memory usage of my iPhone apps. I've noticed that the Real Memory climbs whenever I interact with the UI in any way, even if there's no code being called. For example, I can create a brand new View-Based application and run it, and as I click or drag in the empty window the Real Memory increases even though the app isn't responding in any way. I get that the view controller is doing some stuff in the background to interpret my interactions, but it seems like the memory should go back down after a second or so. Instead, it keeps going up and up and up as long as I keep clicking or dragging. I can wait forever and it never decreases. This is a little disturbing. Am I missing something?

• Can't type anything in inputs or textareas

  Hello, I have a problem: I've add a Jquery UI drag-n-drop widget to my page, but after that I can't type anything into inputs or textareas. I use jQuery 1.4.2 and jQuery UI 1.8rc3, and tiny_mce for convert textareas into WYSIWUG editor (I've tried to disable tiny_mce). When I put $("input").click( function(){ alert('clicked!'); }); - it's working(I have an alert). When I get focused to any input I even can't refresh page by F5 and go to the next element by Tab key. • Android Timer update UI between multiple tasks

  I have tried multiple ways to have a single persistent timer update the ui in multiple activities, and nothing seems to work. I have tried an AsyncTask, a Handler, and a CountDownTimer. The code below does not execute the first Log.i statement.... • How could I go about creating bespoke automated e-mails?

• Perfmon: which counter identifies that threads are waiting?

  While load testing an ASP.NET app, we find that the pages are taking 20-30 sec under heavy load. We suspect this is because the pages are waiting for database calls or web services. Is there a particular perfmon counter that can identify this sort of bottleneck on the web servers? CPU, Memory, and Disk are normal. Or must we use a tool other than perfmon to track down this bottleneck?

• How to: mirror a staging server from a production server

  We want to mirror our current production app server (Oracle Application Server) onto our staging server. As it stands right now, various things are out of sync, and what may work in testing/QA can easily fail in production because of settings/patch/etc inconsistencies. I was thinking what would be best is to clone the entire disk daily and push it onto the staging server... Would this be the best method...? (note: these are all windows servers)

• Generate a limited amount of random network traffic between 2 hosts

  I'm trying to find a utility that will allow me to generate a constant flow of random network traffic at a specified rate between 2 hosts. The utility needs to run on Windows and OSX. I've tried iperf but it seems to be more oriented toward short-term testing/statistics and it really taxes the CPU even at slower rates. I want something that will generate traffic for a few weeks at say 10Mbps while I use other tools to monitor the impact of that level of traffic on the network.

• Is this an acceptable UI design decision?

  OK, while I'm on record as stating that StackExchange UI is pretty much one of the best websites and overall GUIs that I have ever seen as far as usability goes, there's one particular aspect of the trilogy that bugs me. For an example, head on to http://meta.stackoverflow.com . Look at the banner on top (the one that says "reminder -- it's April Fool's Day depending on your time zone!"). Personally, I feel that this is a "make the user do the figuring out work" anti-pattern (whatever it's officially called) - namely, instead of making your app smart enough to only present a certain mode of operations in the conditions when that mode is appropriate, you simply turn on the mode full on and put an explanation to the user of why the mode is on when it should not be (in this particular example, the mode is of course displaying the unicorn gravatars starting with 00:00 in the first timezone, despite the fact that some users still live in March 31st). The Great Recalc was also handled the same way - instead of proactively telling the user "your rep was changed from X to Y" the same nearly invisible banner was displayed on meta. So, the questions are: Is there such an official anti-pattern, and if so,m what the heck do i call it? Do you have any other well-known examples of such design anti-pattern? How would you fix either the SO example I made or you your own example? Is there a pattern of fixing or must it be a case-by-case solution?

But when I copy the page source and paste it in the html page, and put it in the views folder, everything looks great, so , I assume all the js paths are good. • Eclipse Plugin does not work in FlashBuilder/FlexBuilder Standalone

  Hi, created an Eclipse plugin that contributes to the UI by a new project wizard a new menu in the context menu of projects in the Package Explorer a new project nature + builder a new preference page for the plugin The plugin works fine when installed in a normal Eclipse instance with Flex/Flashbuilder as plugin. The problem now is, that the plugin never gets activated when i install it in a Flex/Flashbuilder Standalone instance. Neither of the features described above is available. • Problem with testing In App with sandbox test account

  Hi, I created a test user account through the Manage User Accounts in iTunes Connect. When you create such an account you have to select a valid storefront for your account. I chose US Store. Now I signed out from the store in App Store settings on my device. Ran the application and tried to perform a purchase. I successfully login with my test account. After I press Confirm when entering my credentials I get an alert, that comes from SKPaymentTransactionStateFailed from the observer. It says "Your account is only valid for purchases in the US iTunes Store". The error state = 0 unknown. Second time when i try to perform the purchase, StoreKit only asks me for a password like the previous login was successful. After entering a password I can perform a purchase. My question is whether it's only because it's a testing account and the application is not actually on AppStore? What should I do to avoid this message or at least to continue the purchasing process? • PHP PCRE differences on testing and hosting servers

  Hi all, I've got the following regular expression that works fine on my testing server, but just returns an empty string on my hosted server. $text = preg_replace('~[^\\pL\d]+~u', $use, $text); Now I'm pretty sure this comes down to the hosting server version of PCRE not being compiled with Unicode property support enabled. The differences in the two versions are as follows: My server: PCRE version 7.8 2008-09-05 Compiled with UTF-8 support Unicode properties support Newline sequence is LF \R matches all Unicode newlines Internal link size = 2 POSIX malloc threshold = 10 Default match limit = 10000000 Default recursion depth limit = 10000000 Match recursion uses stack Hosting server: PCRE version 4.5 01-December-2003 Compiled with UTF-8 support Newline character is LF Internal link size = 2 POSIX malloc threshold = 10 Default match limit = 10000000 Match recursion uses stack Also note that the version on the hosting server (the same version PHP is compiled against) is pretty old. What confuses me though, is that pcretest fails on both servers from the command line with re> ~[^\\pL\d]+~u ** Unknown option 'u' although this regexp works fine when run from PHP on my server. So, I guess my questions are does the regular expression fail on the hosting server because of the lack of Unicode properties? Or is there something else that I'm missing? Thanks all, Gaz.
