• How do you get the File:// protocol to work in IE8?

  I am running a website on my local machine ("http://localhost/asdf") and trying to get some file:// protocol links to work. In reality I'm trying to open a folder, not a specific file, but I can't get either to work. I've put localhost in my "trusted zone", I've tried every combo of "file" ,":", some number of "/" and then a whole bunch of different paths, but encoded and not encoded. Nothing I do causes anything to open when I click on the link. If I copy the link destination, and paste that in the browser address window, then it works as expected. Anyone know the secret?

• How to create GUI as inner class with WindowBuilder

  I would like to use WindowBuilder in Eclipse to construct Swing GUIs. The JPanels I need to build will be inner classes in a non-GUI wrapper, like so: public class MyWrapper extends MyBaseClass { ... class MyPanel extends JPanel { ... } } So my question is this: can I construct MyPanel using WindowBuilder? If so, how should I set it up? If anyone is interested, the wrapper is an abstract base class which the plug-ins I am developing for my app must extend; deployment concerns mean that it's not really practical to put the GUIs in a separate JAR either so I pretty much have to do it this way. My current workflow, which is awful, is to build the GUI in NetBeans and paste the entire generated class into Eclipse where I connect it up to the methods in my wrapper. I am very hopeful that WindowBuilder will let me work more reliably and efficiently if I can trick it into generating code in MyPanel, not MyWrapper. Thanks

• Accessing a drive on remote server via app.config

  I am working on a website with a scheduled dataloader exe. The website lives on the web server and the dataloader lives on the DB server. One of the steps in the process is for the dataloader to access the WEB server (to copy/paste a maintenance page file..e.g.\192.168.1.101\c$\maintenance.htm). I am, not surprisingly, running into permissions issues because the dataloader needs to be able to login to the WEB server as an admin to copy the file. Is there a way I can set up logging in (something akin to impersonating a user through an App.config?) Thanks! -KC

• WebClient - The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden.

  Opening a public page from browser works fine. Downloading same page using WebClient throws - (403) Forbidden. What is going on here ? • Jquery Mobile splitview like Android Gmail app [closed]

  Since I don't know much about jquery mobile, CSS, i don't know what we call this. I want to create a splitview like Android gmail app (image attached). but i am not sure how to create arrow cut on the active (clicked) listview only (like shown in the image) and other listview are normal. Can someone guide me how to approach it. Sorry for confusing everyone. Updated the image with black circle. the nice inward arrow (shown under black circle) is what i am looking for. As you see this inward arrow will appear only for the active left side listview only and others will have a straight line, also left side has a distinct appearance. I want to know the approach for these using jquery mobile, jquery, css etc.

• Linux program - reverse highlighted text

  I want to develop a program that will run on the background of my Ubuntu 12.04 so when some text is selected in some textbox of any running program and some key-combination is pressed (like ctrl-F12), the text will be cut, reversed, and pasted in the same place. I know some programs that do it on windows. It is useful in some programs and web-pages that do not support right-to-left languages like arabic and hebrew - the letters are printed from left to right so the text becomes reversed. More specifically I need it in Prezi that has this kind of bug in their embedded flash editor (I thought about writing a chrome-plugin, but I don't think such plugin can manipulate the selected text inside a flash objects). Do you know if such a program exist? Where should I start reading in order to develop a program with such capabilities (manipulate selected text in other programs)? Thanks

• What is the best software to write and organize written copy / content for a website?

  I'm a newbie product manager, looking for tips on how to write and organize text copy for my company's website. I need to be able to prepare the content for our public site and turn it over to the web designer who publishes it to our live site. I want our UI team to be able to quickly glance at the copy I write and immediately know where on the page I intend for it to go. Currently, I'm using microsoft word to write and color code different text to signify where I want specific text to go. It is difficult for the UI guy to immediately know if something goes into the nav bar or into a header or a description below a header. In addition to that, it would be helpful for me to be able to write the copy in such a way that the web designer could copy and paste it into the XHTML without having to go back and manually replace special punctuation characters with the XHTML entities. What software is out there that will allow a comprehensive solution to these web copywriting issues?

• What's the current (as of April 2010) state of affairs regarding <object> vs <embed> in HTML?

  The age old question. <object> vs <embed>. From what I gather, <object> is the XHTML-compliant way of doing things, while <embed> is for legacy support. I'm currently building a Flash application that will contain a pre-made embedding code for users to copy and paste, and I'm wondering if it's feasible to simply dump the <embed> tag altogether. Which browsers would be unable to load my application if I gave my users an <object>-only embed code? Thanks :)

• Create categorial variable in R based on range

  I have a dataframe with a column of integers that I would like to use as a reference to make a new categorical variable. I want to divide the variable into three groups and set the ranges myself (ie 0-5, 6-10, etc). I tried cut but that divides the variable into groups based on a normal distribution and my data is right skewed. I have also tried to use if/then statements but this outputs a true/false value and I would like to keep my original variable. I am sure that there is a simple way to do this but I cannot seem to figure it out. Any advice on a simple way to do this quickly?

• C++ wrapper for C library

  Hi, Recently I found a C library that I want to use in my C++ project. This code is configured with global variables and writes it's output to memory pointed by static pointers. When I execute my project I would like 2 instances of the C program to run: one with configuration A and one with configuration B. I can't afford to run my program twice, so I think there are 2 options: Make a C++ wrapper: The problem here is that the wrapper-class should contain all global/static variables the C library has. Since the functions in the C library use those variables I will have to create very big argument-lists for those functions. Copy-paste the C library: Here I'll have to adapt the name of every function and every variable inside the C library. Which one is the fastest solution? Are there other possibilities to run 2 instances of the same C source? Thanks, Max

  A page on a site I use is holding some of my data hostage. Once I have logged into the site and navigated to the right page, the data I need is in the array eeData[] - it is 720 elements long (once every 2 minutes of a given day). Rather than simulate the requests to the underlying stuff json supplier and since its only once a day, I am happy to simply develop a bookmarklet to grab the data - preferably as a XML or CSV file. Any pointers to sample code or hints would help. I found a bookmarklet here that is based on this script that does part of this - but I am not up to speed on any potential JS file IO to see if it is possible to induce a file "download" of the data, or pop it opn in a new window I can copy / paste.

• Two Column Theme, Help, to make both columns seperately Scrollable.

  Hey, I am not sure what to do on this one, I'm not a programmer, but trying to learn CSS as this is how the theme I am using was coded in. I've gotten quite far on my own, but this one stumps me Its two column Theme... As far as I have been able to get, I can use the following: #left { width: 235px; padding: 10px; margin-left: 20px; position: fixed; line-height: 15px; If I change the position to Absolute, The whole page scrolls, If I leave it at Fixed, and add lets say, a Twitter feed, or other type of text that takes me past its reading where you would normally scroll, Its just cut off, cannot get to it, hightlight or scroll.. I've also toyed with the idea, of changing the theme to a 3 column theme, but Again, not a programmer, and i'd be really confused. anyhelp would be great... • Creating immutable objects from javabean

  Hi All, I am involved in this project where we are building on good bit of legacy code. I have a particular situation about one big java bean object which has to be transferred over wire. So my first thought was to make it immutable and serializable to do the trick .At this point I am faced with a few difficult choices :- 1 Ideally I want some way to automatically generate an immutable, serializable version of this class. I dont have the scope to refactor or alter this class in any way and i would really really hate to have to copy paste the class with a different name ?? 2 Assuming that i gave up on 1 i.e i actually chose to duplicate code of the HUGE javabean class , i still will be in the unsavoury situation of having to write a constructor with some 20-25 parameters to make this class immutable. what is a better way to make a class immutable other than constructor injection ?? • ASP/HTML problem with spaces and monofonts

  I have a ASP has a Function that converts ä to &auml so far so good. I have lets say space for 10 char's if there are more cut them of if there are less fill the space up with &nbsp's. . Like this: test &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp but if i say "täst" it does this: te &auml t &nbsp It interprets the &auml not as one char it looks at it as 6 chars. Is there a clever way around that? This problem messes up my design because I need the right count of spaces. The whole thing goes into a big select box. Of you have to add a ; at the end of ever &... I could add them because the Editor would really interprt them.

• Get part of a string of part of regular expression?

  Im trying to make a script that will go into a directory and run my own application with each file matching a regular expression, specifically "Test[0-9]*.txt". My input filenames look like this "TestXX.txt". Now, I could just use cut and chop off the Test and .txt, but how would I do this if XX wasn't predefined to be 2 numbers? What would I do if i had "Test1.txt" ... "Test10.txt"? In other words, How would I get the [0-9]* part? Just so you know, I want to be able to make a OutputXX.txt :)

  Hi, I'm building a Rails app that does conversion tracking on outside sites. • Why use of session name and session id in the get variables does not work?

  I have the following code: $location .= 'red=no&'.session_name() . "=". session_id(); $content = file_get_contents($location); echo $content; If I run it, noting is displayed in my browser. However, if I modify it in the following way: $location .= 'red=no'; $content = file_get_contents($location); echo $content; everything works fine (I see the content in my browser). What is also strange, if I display the value of the $location variable from the first example (url) and manually paste it in the address line of my browser, I do see the content. So, my browser is able to use this URL and file_get_contents not. Does anybody know how it can be explained?

  So, I am adapting some code I found online to suit my needs. However, my set_pixel function has two more parameters. Since there are lots of calls to this function even doing a quick paste over would be very tedious. So, I thought this would be a good time for me to learn some simple regular expressions. So, I have calls of this type: set_pixel(arg1, arg2); which I want to change to something like: set_pixel(arg1, arg2, arg3, arg4); Note: arg1 and and 2 should be preserved, whereas arg3 and arg4 are most of the time the same. • "Send it to a friend" button on a webpage

  Hey, How often do we see stuff like "Send this page to a friend" on a webpages? Well, I see them quite often. My question is, how do you guys see it's effectiveness? If I hit a webpage that's interesting, and I think my friend would enjoy it, I can just copy the URL from my browser bar, paste it into the email and press "Send" button. In my opinion, it's usually faster and less mistake-aware then the button/link like this on the webpage. In addition, I'm not really sure what this website does with the emails I enter there - don't they store it and then sell for $1/100 addresses to spammers? My question is - when you design a website, do you put such links on the pages (it's often seen on sites with some news/articles)? Does it even make sense?

  As far as I can see there doesn't seem to any mature environment for crossplatform development for iPhone & Android slate (but feel free to correct me). I don't know Ipad, I must admit. Any reason why plain Java wouldn't cut it? (maybe underlying things like database (I am not too concerned with hardware)) I am thinking to try to make everything browser based, although that won't get around the d/b & h/w issues, unless there is JS framework that does so. • problem in playing mp4 video in safari

  I have a particular link to a video file in server. when i load the safari through [[UIApplication sharedApplication] openURL:[NSURL URLWithString:@"http://mydomain/category/2.mp4"]]; simulator pops out an alert message saying that "Cannot Play MOVIE.. Server is not correctly configured"....... Even I tried using the mediaPlayer framework - MPMoviePlayerController and loading it with th e url-"http://mydomain/category/2.mp4" but it didnt play out. when i paste the same url in the 10.5 leopards safari it plays out smoothly.. What may be the reason behind it.?

• Is there a way to find TOP X records with grouped data?

  I'm working with a Sybase 12.5 server and I have a table defined as such: CREATE TABLE SomeTable( [GroupID] [int] NOT NULL, [DateStamp] [datetime] NOT NULL, [SomeName] varchar(100), PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED (GroupID,DateStamp) ) I want to be able to list, per [GroupID], only the latest X records by [DateStamp]. The kicker is X 1, so plain old MAX() won't cut it. I'm assuming there's a wonderfully nasty way to do this with cursors and what-not, but I'm wondering if there is a simpler way without that stuff. I know I'm missing something blatantly obvious and I'm gonna kick myself for not getting it, but .... I'm not getting it. Please help. Is there a way to find TOP X records, but with grouped data?

• Breaking up large DataGridView for printing

  Hey, I've got a single-row, 40 column-long DataGridView that i need to print. Since i can neither print it directly (because A4 sheets won't cut it ;)) nor adjust its width to the width of the page itself (because the headers look terrible), i wanted to break the DataGridView to 4 separate pieces and display 10 columns per row (imagine: column 1 to 10 in the first line, column 11 to 21 four or five lines below, etc...). Is there an easy way to do this? I was leaning towards a more manual approach (using fors), but i'd love to know if there's a more elegant way. Cheers
